This might sound strange but, while I agree with you, I also partly agree with the idea that “the Judge should have been the one to kill Joseph”.
I say “partly” because it indeed seems very unlikely that they would have actually done it considering how close they now are and how “codependent” (to quote Greg Bryk) they’ve both become after their time together in the bunker, but what I think is true about that statement, and maybe it’s what people mean when they say that, is that it made no sense for the Security Captain to be the one to decide Joseph’s fate. People in Prosperity resent him and say he’s a bad person, but to New Dawn’s protagonist, an outsider and newcomer, the Father is just a strange old man who’s seemingly harmless and has only been helpful to them, so why would they want him dead? Some players might, but not the Captain.
I still want to write more about Joseph’s final scene and why most of what he says is nonsense and in contradiction with the events of Far Cry 5 and even New Dawn itself, but while I’m at it, on a side (and angry) note, I think the fact we were even given the option to kill him is extremely annoying. It’s just (bad) fan service for the players who complained about Far Cry 5’s ending, but most of them did so because they didn’t understand the story or at least respect the creators’ vision. I’m surprised whether or not Joseph was right all along is still debated among players when it’s the whole, officially confirmed concept of the first game. It’s a fact and an idea the original writers fought to defend, so him suddenly going, “Ah, I guess I was wrong, actually, so you should probably kill me now” at the end of New Dawn is frustrating, to say the least. To me, it’s a betrayal to Far Cry 5 and its fans.
Anyway, I don’t fully disagree with “the Judge should have been the one to kill Joseph” in the sense that, yes, unlike the Captain, they knew what Eden’s Gate had done and, as the Deputy, had personal reasons to want the Project’s leader dead. More importantly, being the literal Judge of the man the Voice chose to spread Its message and do Its will, only they were truly able to “give [him] God’s justice” as he asked. That’s pretty much their role now, so I’m all the more upset they made the Captain do it instead...
So it might make sense for (some) players to want to kill Joseph, but in the context of the game, as disappointed as I am that this choice exists, I do think it should have been given to the Judge. Again, though, would they have done it? Like you, I highly doubt it, and you’re also right in your tags that it’s quite strange for them to be so indifferent and not even try to stop the Captain from pulling the trigger... But yeah, as the Prophet’s right arm, it would have been way more logical if the Judge had been asked to deliver “the justice of God’s hand” instead.
new dawn is not well written but a take i often see is "the judge should have been the one to kill joseph" and i know rook/the judge doesn't exactly have a character in the traditional sense but at the very least you have misinterpreted the relationship of joseph and rook to an emberrassing extent imo if you think that ending would have fit them anywhere after the time spent in the bunker

OFF/Mortis Ghost tribute sketchbook drawings. Did these to commemorate replaying the game after a very long time. Last time was probably when it got popular during the Homestuck gigapause. Think of these as a drawthrough (drawing + playthrough) of the game. They are all in A5 with Nº2 graphite pencils and 0.5 and 0.05 archival ink pens, plus digital coloring through limited color palettes in Aseprite. Just as with the Yume Nikki post, I'd love to know: What's your favorite?
