"List of biomedical "dogma" that came under question in 2018"- Detail: One of the great things about science, in my opinion, is that there is no room for sacred cows. Every idea, every hypothesis has to withstand new data. If they can't it means we need to re-think how we understand the world! In fact, I think science is at its best when it is a frank discussion among peers about their data and their experiments and the best way to integrate these into how we think about how the world works. To this end, I came across a list Eric Topol recently put together of biomedical "dogma" that came under scrutiny in 2018. I've listed them below.Eric makes the good point that just because we are questioning something, doesn't mean the old theory is wrong. It just means maybe we should revisit the data and decide if any new experiments should be done.I think the concept of keeping a list like this is fabulous (I'll be doing this next year!). If you have any ideas for things that should be added to the list - let me know! Also, if you think something on the list shouldn't be here, tell me why.Topic ChallengedNew FindingCitationThe wombIsn't SterileCould baby’s first bacteria take root before birth?ProbioticsBackfire - when taken with antibotics, they delay gut healingPost-Antibiotic Gut Mucosal Microbiome Reconstitution Is Impaired by Probiotics and Improved by Autologous FMTCancer increasing with ageNot only due to rising number of somatic mutations, but also decline numbers of T-cellsThymic involution and rising disease incidence with ageThe speech gene (FOXP2)No evidence of selectionNo Evidence for Recent Selection at FOXP2 among Diverse Human PopulationsType 1 diabetesCan be diagnosed through age 60; >40% of diagnoses after age 30Frequency and phenotype of type 1 diabetes in the first six decades of life: a cross-sectional, genetically stratified survival analysis from UK BiobankCancer combination therapybenefits are beyond additive or synergyCombination Cancer Therapy Can Confer Benefit via Patient-to-Patient Variability without Drug Additivity or Synergy.End of life healthcare spendingNot the main explanation for wasteful spendingPredictive modeling of U.S. health care spending in late lifeDairy productsNot bad for health; associated with lower cardiovascular eventsAssociation of dairy intake with cardiovascular disease and mortality in 21 countries from five continents (PURE): a prospective cohort studyLow-dose aspirinNot protective; associated with higher rates of CV mortality and cancerEffect of Aspirin on Cardiovascular Events and Bleeding in the Healthy ElderlyCredit: Link to Eric's listPS: I originally posted this to r/sciences, but I thought people here might enjoy it as well.. A lot of people believe that a deep tissue massage is all about relaxation, relieving tight muscles or just plain old pampering? Yes, massage is perfect for stimulating an innate state of relaxation and offering the ‘me’ time.
