I think there's an important extension of this in acknowledging that colonization and the genocide of indigenous peoples in so called canada is an ongoing and systemic issue— it didn't end with residential schools and is still impacting indigenous communities today (for example: missing and murdered indigenous women, grassy narrows, decades long boil water advisories in first nations communities). So yeah— it's good they dropped that Joplin concept. And, I think it's important to acknowledge that in writing the elves the way they did in the past with so much allusion to real world oppression— that Veilguard too, exists in the context of ongoing colonization. So, the choices Bioware made in portraying the elves in Veilguard were happening in this context.

It bears repeating but, 100% this. It's why I side-eye people who compliment BioWare's world building. So much of it is based on White Canadianism which makes a lot of tensions (like mage vs templars) feel shallow.
Sure there are some good parts and ideas but most of it is ehhhhhhh.
Veilguard was very self aware about it for a BioWare game.
#idk how to tag this#tw colonialism#tw residential schools#This lens does make Bellara violently rejecting the Evanuris in Minrathous go fucking hard though#and tbh i think there is some interesting world building happening in this series that reflects canadian imperialism pretty well#i just don't know how on purpose it is hah#this is half no caps half yes caps and im not fixing it 🫡
