Note

On Sophie vs Kate and being interclass. Actually, Book Sophie is a higher class than Show Kate. While Show Kate is of common birth, not to mention foreign birth, Book Sophie’s legal documentation lists her as the legitimate daughter of a dead gentleman, and the legal ward of an Earl (her biological father, who is straight up lying to the county registry). Furthermore, the Earl provided for Sophie upon his death by bestowing her a large dowry. Sophie only became working class because Araminta threw her out and stole her money. If Araminta hadn’t thrown her out originally, and later been so loud about Sophie being a bastard, Benedict could’ve married “daughter of unknown country gentleman” without scandal, and they wouldn’t have had to live in the country unless they wanted to. Book Sophie’s social status was basically Harriet Smith of Emma, who could’ve had a respectable marriage to Elton if Elton hadn’t been an asshole.

I have no idea how they’re going to fix the unforced error of messing with Show Kate’s birth though. The Sharmas could’ve just been gentry poor, like the Sheffields in the books?!? There was truly no reason for Lord Rupert Giles Sheffield to exist on the show.

Sigh okay Anon, you really make me want to go trough my previous replies one by one looking for that one where I already talked about this. And at this point I'm unhappy to be digging trough Interviews and articles on the subject again, because people seem not to believe me. That Kate WASNT considered a commoner and that she's not considered lower class!!!

Also regarding to Sophie, the above would have been true about Sophie if Hyacinth HADN'T made a comment referencing the fact that her sister in law is the bastard daughter of an Earl and some unknown singer in her book 'It's in his kiss' implying that pretty much all sundry knows that Sophie IS the bastard daughter of an Earl.

On paper, she was legally gentry. But in the eyes of society, she was a bastard. a by blow, the illegitimate daughter of an earl and some courtesan somewhere. completely undesirable. etc. I made a very long post about why this meant Benedict retired hapily to the country with her and wasn't really invited to balls, I did it last year, I remember.

Now Kate's upbringing is different, Mary married an unnamed clerk, Mr Sharma, who already had a daughter Kate. And we are not given any more information on how Kate's father managed to meet the diamond of the season and have her agree to run away with him to India.

Which, to me, dear reader meant that Mr Sharma in question had to be a gentleman. But one looked down upon by higher parts of society, such as some sort of graduated professional or a barrister. sort of how Mr Colins and Mr Darcy where both Gentlemen but Mr Colins was regarded as beneath Darcy.

AD 70 AS A POINTER TO THE SECOND ADVENT

AD 70 prefigures the Second Advent; it is theologically linked to it. But this does not imply any concept of double-fulfillment. There is a fundamental difference between prolepsis and double-fulfillment. Let me explain.

In the OT we have several “Day of the Lord” events: against Babylon (Isa 13:9), Jerusalem (Joel 2:1), and others. Each of these is a pointer to the final Day of the Lord (2 Pet 3:10), though each OT version is spoken of as THE (singular) Day of the Lord. This is much like our spiritual resurrection in salvation (John 5:24-25; 1 John 3:14) pointing to our final resurrection at the end of history. Or like the Christian’s being a “new creation” (2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15), which is a picture of the consummate new creation (2 Pet 3:10).

These observations represent standard proleptic theology, which is often called: Now-But-Not-Yet theology. This is held by most evangelical theologians.

In fact, many scholars see AD 70 as a microcosm of the final judgment. Consequently, we may expect the same imagery to apply to both AD 70 and the end.

For instance, of those first-century events, Bloesch states: “The catastrophe that befell the Jewish people in A.D. 70 is a sign of the final judgment.” (Donald G. Bloesch, The Last Things: Resurrection, Judgment, Glory [Downers Grove, Ill: InterVarsity, 2004], 84.)

Morris agrees: “a theological unity between the two judgments, and that some of what Jesus says [in the Olivet Discourse] could apply equally well to both.” (Leon Morris, The Gospel according to Matthew [Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1992], 593.)

Mounce concurs: “the coming destruction of Jerusalem was anticipation of the end of the age.” (Robert H. Mounce, Matthew [Peabody, Mass.: 1991], 222.)

Hagner writes: “The fall of Jerusalem is described in quasi-eschatological language and in the same discourse that describes the coming of the Son of Man. The two events are obviously linked in the minds of the disciples (as their question implied, 24.3) and very probably in the mind of the evangelist.” He continues: “There is a theological relationship between the fall of Jerusalem and the end of the age, since both involve judgment. . . . The former is the prefiguration of the latter.” (Thomas E. Schmidt and Moises Silva, To Tell the Mystery: Essays on New Testament Eschatology in Honor of Robert H. Gundry [Sheffield, Eng.: Continuum, 1994], 66.)

Reymond speaks of Christ’s “‘lesser (typical) coming in judgment’ in the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70.” (Robert L. Reymond, A New Systematic Theology [Nashville: Nelson, 1998], 215.)

Alexander calls AD 70 a “prefiguring,”Robertson “a symbol” of the end. (Joseph Addison Alexander, The Gospel according to Matthew Explained [Lynchburg, Vir.: James Family, rep. n.d., (1861]), 345.)

Of AD 70, T. J. Geddert states: “the events were, as do so many events in the OT, to point toward the final judgment.” (in Michael B. Green, Scot McKnight, I. Howard Marshal, eds., Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels: A Compendium of Contemporary Biblical Scholarship [Downers Grove, Ill: InterVarsity, 1992], 23.)

Bavinck sees AD 70 as “the announcement and preparation of the consummation of the world.” (Herman Bavinck, The Last Things: Hope for This World and the Next, trans. by John Vriend, ed. by John Bolt [Grand Rapids: Baker, 1996], 108.)

Strimple as “a proleptic, typological fulfillment of that final judgment of God.” (Robert B. Strimple in Darrell L. Bock, Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1999], 64).

In fact, DBI observes that “Scripture portrays God’s judgments throughout history as proleptic pictures of the final judgment.” (Leland Ryken, James C. Wilhoit, Tremper Longman III, eds., Dictionary of Biblical Imagery [Downers Grove, Ill: InterVarsity, 1998], 472.)

Derbyshire Lawlessness

On the 1st January 1434 90 men under Thomas Foljambe attacked their rivals, the Longfords in Chesterfield. Parish Church.

Henry Longford + William Bradshaw were killed & Sir Henry Pierrepont was maimed as detailed in an oyer and terminer commission of March 1434 issued to the duke of Bedford, Humphrey Stafford duke of Buckingham, William de la Pole Earl of Suffolk and two judges

The parish churches were frequently the scene of open conflict in the 15th century where the pulpit could be used to whip up support!

In 1434 alone there were 200 juries assembled to try to deal with the Foljambe-Pierrepont / Longford dispute. Pierrepont is known to have sat on at least one and others were definitely pro Foljambe.

The original source of the quarrel is largely obscure but may have been an attempt by one Richard Brown g Replan to get Thomas Foljambe acquitted g felony by 'trickery' and it appears that Foljambe had the key support of the Vernons. It also became apparent that Foljambe had prevented Pierrepont from collecting profits from Chesterfield Fair which was licensed to him by Joan Holland, Countess of Kent. Foljambe was also accused of illegally issuing 21 liveries - the most ever recorded in a session - highlighting the wider political sympathies as his co-accused included Sir Ralph Cromwell, Henry, Lord Grey & Joan Beauchamp, Lady Bergavenny.

The largest skirmish reported was in 1454 when 1,000 men attacked Walter Blount at Elvaston including Longfords and Vernons, now apparently working together!

Such large numbers of gentry were involved that it was almost impossible to recruit a jury at all. Richard, duke g York, John, Earl of Shrewsbury and 2 judges eventually heard the case at Derby in July 1454 and continued in September 1454 and at Chesterfield in March 145S, still without enough jurors to try the key figures.

Despite the undoubted truth of Blount's case, the family were almost completely isolated and Vernon and Longford refused to attend the sessions. It is probably that greater forces were at work: Humphrey Stafford duke of Buckingham may well have encouraged the attack on Blount who was a retainer of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, Buckingham and Warwick being rivals in Warwickshire and although Buckingham had supported York's protectorate, he was a staunch supporter of Henry VI and Somerset.

Buckingham retained Vernon after the first session and Vernon responded by bringing men from across the Peak to join the fray. Buckingham was clearly lining up against Warwick's man, showing that it was not only in the north that local rivalries and national politics were intertwined.

A Catbird/Towhee Feathursday

The Catbirds have been meowing under our windows of late, but the Towhees have been fairly inconspicuous this summer. There are a variety of catbird and towhee species around the globe, but in our neck of the woods we have the Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) and the Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus). The Catbird is in the family Mimidae along with Mockingbirds and Thrashers, while the Towhee is a sparrow in the large Passerellidae family of New World Sparrows.

We present these brilliant chromolithographs of the Gray Catbird and the Eastern Towhee (referred to here as the Towhee Bunting) from Nests and Eggs of Birds of the United States by Thomas G. Gentry and published by J. A. Wagenseller of Philadelphia in 1882, which includes chromolithographs of around 50 paintings of North American birds, eggs, and nests by the American naturalist painter Edwin Sheppard. Eastern Towhees typically nest on or near the ground, which Sheppard depicts here.

Reaching out across Tumblr to all my G&S fans, @carpe-mamilia and I just got back from Harrogate from this year’s G&S Festival, and I have some thoughts about the shows which I think I just needed to get down.

Also, bonus shoutout to @carlodivarga-s for being an all-round charming presence and delightful surprise in Harrogate this year!

OK. Here goes.

Princess Ida (Savoynet)

As Stephen Turnbull (he of Harrogate ramblings on Facebook) mentioned, this is a production that could have only worked at the festival. With the two kings portrayed as Gilbert and Sullivan themselves, and the rest of the company (with the exception of Ida herself) costumed as choruses from the rest of the G&S universe.

I know that Ida is written in 3 acts, but to have two 15 minute intervals is a strange experience. Especially as the curtain came down on the Act I at 8:15, it felt as though we were only about getting started and we were all back out our seats and into the bar. When I saw Ida done in Southampton earlier this year, they split Act II in half and placed a single interval more squarely in the middle, and I didn’t think that the pacing or structure suffered as much as it perhaps could have done then.

My greatest issue with Ida is that.. it’s not a very interesting story? And certainly not a very good ending. It feels as though Sullivan far outshines Gilbert. Some of the plot points, too, feel very, well, seen-before? Most noticeably, the male trio dressing up in silly costumes and singing witty songs about it? Done in Patience (and much better, I should add!). That said, Ida definitely has some standout solos, in particular Gama’s two patter songs (’I’m such a disagreeable man’ and ‘Nothing whatever to grumble at’), and Death to the Invaders! is such a TUNE at the top of Act III, though I actually preferred it in Southampton, just as there was more drama and sense of impending peril.

The ending of the whole thing is pretty crap though. Here’s Ida, a feminist ICON who shuns men and rules a chorus of strong academic ambitious women who look down on men, and yet she sort of just limps across the finish line like, oh yeah, I guess I’ll just love you and marry a man and I was wrong about all my studies and thoughts of independence. Ugh.

Y’know what I want to happen to Ida? I want her to shun all the men and grow old, independent, and married to a woman. Princess Ida: a queer legend.

Trial by Jury & The Zoo (LOpSoc)

I can’t say too much about the productions because it was my old university group and I’m sure I can’t write without any bias, so I’ll focus on the shows.

Trial by Jury was my first real show as Musical Director so it’ll always have a spot in my heart, especially having studied law at university. Musically, it’s so well accomplished, at barely 30 minutes, Sullivan manages to cram in so much content, including the brilliant ‘A Nice Dilemma’ sextet (or septet if you count the chorus as one, too), as well as some beautiful patter songs and some great parts for the chorus. You can really see how the rest of the Savoy Operas took inspiration, and to a certain extent, structure, from this first piece.

That said, there are a few familiar elements missing from the piece that become G&S standards later on in the canon, including the contralto exposition song, the romantic leads’ duet, and, well, a second act. Still though, one of my favourites.

The Zoo on the other hand? I’ve now seen it three times, and whilst I enjoy the music, some of it really is quite good, I have no idea what actually happens. I think there are at least 3 plots intertwined with one another, but with no libretto to explore or explain those plots, it’s essentially three totally different stories happening at the same time, just... coincidentally at a zoo. Libretto is pretty naff, but there are some charming songs, such as the ‘Four Tarts and a Couple of Pairs’ jaunt, and the duel of the male and female chorus once the Duke has eaten and faints (??) (’Prop him up upon a chair, lay him flat upon his back’).

Good news though, that LOpSoc were nominated for best director and best chorus for this production which I thought was well deserved.

Ruddigore (Charles Court Opera)

Oh my word. I confess I’ve never been Ruddigore’s biggest fan, but boy oh boy am I a fan of Charles Court Opera, so the chance to get to see this production was high up the list, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. With a cast of 9 (and totally omitting the male chorus), this production was lively, sharp-witted, and for the first time in any production of Ruddigore that I’ve seen, or indeed been involved with, I followed every detail of the plot perfectly.

Only two bridesmaids made up the female chorus, and they also lent their voices to a mixed chorus for the ‘Painted Emblems of a Race’ and subsequent male-chorus numbers (though ‘Welcome Gentry’ was cut) which worked beautifully. Also, a nice little change to Mounted emblems of a race, as the three ancestors were portrayed as severed, mounted heads on the wall of the set. Sir Roderic did have an additional stage presence as he was also portrayed by the accompanying headless corpse come to life.

One of the absolute highlights of this production, too, was lovely, wonderful Simon Butteriss, who is always an absolute joy. With John Reed-esque lightness, but with a voice on form as ever, it was a joy to see him on stage. As it was the whole cast, really. Having seen CCO’s HMS Pinafore at the King’s Head in London in a tiny 100-odd seat fringe theatre with just a pianist, to see them on stage at the Royal Hall in Harrogate with a complete orchestra was really special.

Yeomen of the Guard (National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company)

Oh boy. I was so excited for this performance. And I was so disappointed. The victim perhaps of a festival matinee crowd, as I said to dear friends over dinner after the show, there are a certain number of ‘minimum requirements’ I expect of the NGSOC:

The cast remember their lines. Having a certain member of the principal cast prompted from the wings was... well. Awkward to say the least. And garnered the intake of breath you can imagine from the audience.

I expect the principal cast to be able to stick to time with the orchestra. Several times, the cast fell wildly out of time with the orchestra, making for highly awkward listening.

I expect the principal cast to be able to hit all the notes they’re expected to. Naming no names, but, with a certain soprano aria in Yeomen, there’s a rather important note towards the end that you cannot get wrong. And yet.

I expect the show to be lit well. If actors are stood singing in darkness, either the actor needs to find their light, or the lighting director needs to do a better job.

That all said, the chorus were fantastic, to the point I actually longed for them to come back on to stage whenever they were gone, but I must say of Andrew Nicklin’s direction... I found it lacking. The staging was particularly dull and unimaginative, with barely any choreography, or even any movement come to that. My first time actually seeing Yeomen on stage and... ugh. Y’know? That said, there were reports from a friend having seen it earlier in the week at the festival and it being remarkable, so.. maybe just an off-performance.

The Mikado (National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company)

Now, THIS is how you do G&S. The company were almost unrecognisable from the afternoon, and the show was packed to the rafters with joy, energy, and sheer brilliance. Genuine laugh out loud moments from a full auditorium who are, I’m sure, more than familiar with the source material! Andrew Nicklin who was conducting, made sure that the pace was kept up, and my word, just, my heart was pounding with, well, a combination of relief and amazement. I loved it.

In particular, Mae Heydorn as Katisha. Fuckkkkkk. This wasn’t your usual Katisha, this was a dazzling, glamorous Katisha, and although you’d think that might not work, it did. And what a voice. On the final note of Act I, Mae managed to outsing the full assembled company and orchestra with a note that travelled and reverberated into our very bones.

My only criticism would probably be that Richard Gauntlett, who also directed the show, delivered some of Ko Ko’s lines so fast, if you weren’t familiar with the show, you wouldn’t have a clue what he’d just said. That and Nanki-Poo, in a typical tenor manner, did tend to rush some of the songs, even when singing as part of a trio - perhaps a little indicative of not listening to his cast-mates. But alas.

NBA COVID-19 tracker: Five Lakers, four Knicks in protocols; Kings fear outbreak, postponement, per report

The uptick in COVID-19 cases around the NBA has the league reportedly discussing modifications to its health and safety protocols with the National Basketball Players Association. The Omicron variant is here, and this week saw the first confirmed case of it within the NBA's player pool, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. With coach Alvin Gentry and multiple players in protocols, the Sacramento Kings canceled the practice they'd scheduled Thursday and temporarily closed their practice facility, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Kings -- who saw guard De'Aaron Fox enter protocols on Thursday -- reportedly fear that more players will test positive and that Friday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies could be in jeopardy. If there is an outbreak, Sacramento could find itself in the same position that the Chicago Bulls have been in. The NBA postponed Chicago's games against the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors (originally scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday), and, since Dec. 1, 10 of its players have entered health and safety protocols, as have broadcasters Stacey King and Bill Wennington. King tweeted Wednesday that he had tested negative on Tuesday night, but still had a high temperature and felt weak. Several Bulls may be eligible to return on Sunday when they host the Los Angeles Lakers, who will have a makeshift roster themselves. Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley joined three teammates in health and safety protocols on Thursday, and the Lakers signed Isaiah Thomas using a hardship exception. Aside from those two Chicago games, there have not yet been other postponements. The Brooklyn Nets, however, had only eight active players -- the league-mandated minimum for a game to be played -- when they hosted the Raptors on Tuesday. Seven Nets players are in the protocols, and Brooklyn announced Thursday that it has signed Langston Galloway to a 10-day contract, using a hardship exception. (The shorthanded Bulls used hardship exceptions to sign Alfonzo McKinnie and Stanley Johnson, the latter of whom entered health and safety protocols before his first game.) Five Charlotte Hornets players were recently in health and safety protocols, but all have since been cleared. Players who are not fully vaccinated must enter health and safety protocols if they are found to be a close contact of a person who has tested positive. As of Friday, players who have not received a booster shot will be subject to tighter restrictions, including game-day testing. If any player tests positive for COVID-19, he must immediately isolate until 10 days have passed from that test or the onset of symptoms, or until he tests negative on two PCR tests 24 hours apart. Also in health and safety protocols: Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and Toronto president Masai Ujiri. The Nets have coaches and front-office members in protocols, Steve Nash said Tuesday, and the Lakers have staffers in protocols, too. The Raptors announced Wednesday that they will play home games at 50 percent capacity, starting Saturday against the Golden State Warriors. On Thursday their G League team, Raptors 905, followed suit.
