tumblr user unionizedwizard certified #1 shadowbringers + g'raha overthinker reporting for duty
i HAVE been thinking about sphene being the exarch's foil. because it is a very obvious case to the point they had to pick him up from SHARLAYAN as an emergency Relevant Character and also allowed him to come with us to living memory (you know it's about to get serious when they let him go anywhere with the wol)
so, obviously. both sphene and g'raha (as the exarch) were thrust into a horrific nightmarish situation where they were put in charge of a entire city/state facing an umbral calamity. both care deeply about the people they're trying to protect - their people. both have undergone (willingly or not) heretofore unknown scientific operations that irreversibly changed them, using cutting-edge technology, making them immortal and fusing them with an immensely powerful reservoir of aetheric energy, all in the name of duty and preserving hope for the future; both have become a symbol rather than a person. the alexandrians needed their queen, whose mere presence stopped them from succumbing to despair; the people from novrandt forced the exarch into a similar position (even though he kept repeating he would not stand for becoming a king of any sort); himself, on behalf of the ironworks & the entirety of the post-8th umbral calamity survivors, was willing to sacrifice himself to bring back the wol - because (and this is the really important part) of the wol's status as a symbol of hope and resilience. everyone here, the wol included, is dehumanized and worshiped and used for their good, self-sacrificial qualities, as well as their unyielding willpower.
sphene's memories were altered, muddled, to an extent that nobody really understands. the scientists who managed to create the endless are all gone, the average alexandrian forgot everything and everyone they've ever known, she herself knows she's not the "original" sphene but a copy - yet she doesn't seem to mourn this loss, and indeed i don't know to which extent she conceives of it as a loss, or a violation of her bodily autonomy (which it was! she never asked to be brought back, especially not this way, which would be a more than traumatic experience for ANYONE to go through!). in the same way, the exarch's memories encompass several timelines and realities, and he spent an entire century having to hide his identity, not being able to mention his own name, much less his purpose or homeland - i'd say this self-erasure is more than comparable with sphene's experience. not to mention that both sphene and the exarch were forced into "passive", static roles - i don't know how sphene felt about this because this is the tragedy of her character, that we don't know (and she herself doesn't know) the first thing about her, as an individual with preferences and feelings and memories.
also, this all adds up with g'raha's role in the deltascape part of ultima thule - the omicrons being, as AI mechanical soldiers, the missing link between sphene and himself. there's a pattern here, interrogating the relationship between mind, body, memory, duty, freedom and personal agency & autonomy, etc. the endless in general and sphene in particular are more than reminiscent of the omicrons on this point.
all of this to say: thinking about g'raha's gondola speech, i did not think he was talking about the scions, or even the wol. i see how this is a possible (and likely) interpretation to have, but i must confess i was surprised when i saw that this is what most people had understood. to me he was talking about the people from the First, and also the people from the 8th umbral calamity timeline, especially those with whom he'd worked for, presumably, months at a time. so many people who died after the Flood (we tend to forget that he arrived right after the Flood, in the immediate aftermath), not just because of the sin eaters but also because of the sudden and catastrophic environmental changes; all the people who could never adapt to the eternal light and, presumably, went mad (it's a real thing in real life even though night does come back eventually, so i imagine it must have been that but a lot worse in novrandt). all the people who died due to lack of medicine, because all the medicinal plants and recipes disappeared in the blink of an eye, not to mention the healers themselves; all the diseases and epidemics and interpersonal violence that arose as a consequence of the severe famine and lack of basic resources that plagued what was left of the star. and the unfathomable loss and trauma of losing millenia of culture and civilization and knowledge and biodiversity and entire families, entire tribes, cities, countries, being annihilated. g'raha has lived through this for a century, combined with the post-8th umbral calamity state of the Source. we know how much he cares for the people of the crystarium, and we only see the crystarium as a fully-developed, beautiful, and harmonious city-state; we haven't seen the century of work and planning and emergency managing and unfathomable grief and pain that went into it. in the same way, we see alexandria (and living memory) as they are now, but only glimpse a few moments of utter chaos during the alexandria dungeon.
so i'm just thinking of g'raha, seeing living memory, and being the only one among the party who truly understands. who can truly relate to sphene, and understand her. he's the only one present who has personally been through not one but two calamities, and had to deal with them on a day-to-day basis (while readying a completely crazy long-term plan). how many people that he knew, loved, wanted to protect... died of "preventable" causes during the century he was on the First, while himself was immortal - so that he could keep doing his duty, doing everything he could to save them eventually? all this happened in a manner which was truly unfair, and unfathomably evil, and - possibly the worst part - he knew this was still "the better path" (as he put it himself while trying to summon the wol). the survivor's guilt that both he and sphene must be dealing with is simply impossible to really understand, i think. we've seen the crystarium. of course he'd wish for all these unfortunate souls to endure and finally know peace and happiness. and of course, he didn't have a Living Memory, but of course he couldn't help but wonder how he'd have reacted in this situation.
and i do wish we could have had him interact with sphene, actually. it made sense that she was wuk lamat's foil and all, but i think it would have been interesting..........

Starkeep
I like that the diamond pattern in the Skydeep pieces use a pinkish color, similar to the purple gems of the Asension pieces. It can't really be seen in most situations because of how long the robe is, but we like the small details :>

Had a mildly distracting moment watching the new Star Trek when I recognized the water glass matched my mother's crystal.

Seasons Passing
—part iv: summer rains
Rating: Teen Characters: Y'mhitra Rhul, Aymeric de Borel, Yugiri Mistwalker, Erenville, Avi'li Sostomi (WoL) Pairings: Y'mhitra x Avi'li, Aymeric x Avi'li, Yugiri x Avi'li, Erenville x Avi'liChapter Words: 1,297 Summary: For every season, a new love. Whether it is watching the soft fall of autumn leaves with Y’mhitra or the cold snows of winter with Aymeric, the spring blossoms with Yugiri or the summer rains with Erenville, these are the relationships Avi’li Sostomi holds in his heart. Chapters: one • two • three • four Read on AO3 Belated birthday gift for @lilas! Avi'li belongs to them. 💕
The rain hasn’t stopped in Labyrinthos.
Avi’li wades along the bank of the river—murky water up to his calves, arms folded, tail whisking—and casts an irritable look at the sky. For all its grand innovation, Labyrinthos is like any other invention: sometimes it breaks. For no good reason. It has been raining for two weeks straight, disrupting its usually carefully controlled weather patterns and turning it into something akin to a summer monsoon. The engineers are working on it, but so far no progress has been made.
“You would think it would run out of water eventually,” Avi’li grumbles.
Erenville chortles some feet away. He’s further out from shore, standing waist-deep in the muck, protected by a pair of waterproof overalls not unlike the kind worn by fishers. “What is running out of water now?” he asks, carefully examining the perimeter of a vibrant lily pad. For something so large, it certainly is fragile. Avi’li swears he remembers running and jumping on some while being chased by sentient flora… in Saint Mocianne’s Arboretum, maybe…?
“The sky,” Avi’li clarifies, nodding upwards for added emphasis. “Don’t know about you, but I’m tired of lookin’ and feelin’ like a bedraggled rat.”
Erenville looks up from his work, quiet amusement in his yellow eyes. “There is an artificial water cycle here same as there is outside, you know,” he says dryly. “Evaporation, condensation, precipitation… So on and so forth. If Labyrinthos’ sky runs out of water, we’ll have a pretty big problem on our hands. In that case, I recommend heading for the surface immediately.”
“And why is that?”
“Because the sun might just explode, vaporizing everyone and anyone within a certain radius. Can you hand me the journal, please?”
Avi’li’s lips twist as he holds back a smile. “All right, all right, I give up—if it means the sun won’t explode, the unending rain is a good thing,” he replies and scoops the journal from his pocket, proffering it. “I’d rather it wreak havoc on my hair than wreak havoc on my hair and everythin’ else.”
Erenville snorts with laughter. “I must admit, I underestimated you. I didn’t take you to be one so vain.”
“I’m not vain.” Have you met Thancred? The joke lingers on the tip of his tongue, unvoiced. The thought makes him think of his friends, of his fellow Scions, of their scattered organization and the events leading up to their disbandment. They have all gone their separate ways, pursuing their own causes and interests and projects while he is…
Here. Recovering. Healing.
The others worry about him, though they do not say it. He could go back to the way he was before. Fall into old patterns. Keep up his training, perhaps travel all the way to Doma to spar with Yugiri. He could convince everyone his soul is no longer battered and bruised and bleeding, that he is back to the person he was before Ultima Thule. It would be the performance of a life time, and it would break his heart.
Labyrinthos is what he needs right now. Some would call it wasting time, but he would like to think of it as finding time. Time to rest. Time to reflect. Time for all the things he set aside while putting duty first.
Time for himself.
Avi’li raises a hand and drags his fingers through his wet hair, trying to pull it into some kind of presentable look. Perhaps Erenville is a little right, he has at least a smidge of vanity. But he would consider it taking pride in his appearance. It is, after all, a reminder of what he has been through. What he has survived—and how. From the ragged scar on his chest to the toned muscles of his arms and legs, there’s a history here. He has come a long way from the lean, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed scholar excitedly sailing into Limsa Lominsa to pursue the study of arcanima.
If he had a portrait for every season of his life and put them in a line, you could see the story play out.
A warm weight presses into the back of his hand, slender fingers brushing his skin. “Thank you,” Erenville murmurs.
He doesn’t take the journal.
Avi’li pauses, a familiar sensation thumping in his chest. It’s been there for some time, nebulous and vague, like a distant shore on the horizon when emerging from the early morning fog. Funny how once when he thought of Old Sharlayan, he imagined visiting the city and the Studium with Y’mhitra at his side, winding their way through countless stacks of books in pursuit of knowledge. But Y’mhitra is in the far past now, and he finds himself with someone very different, standing in mud and chasing frogs and examining plants, and it feels…
Good. It feels good.
Is it really all that different? The same impulse drives research and observation and study no matter what form they take. Labyrinthos is his library, the environment his stacks of books.
He has always enjoyed Erenville’s company, to be sure. Pleasant and kind and cheerful and funny in that dry way of his. And he is very attractive—the curve of his lips when he smiles, the soft dark of his lashes, the lean muscle accrued from a gleaner’s life. But the more they wander Labyrinthos, the more they delve the depths of its caves and scale the heights of its cliffs, wade through its rushing rivers and walk its winding paths, the more they discuss science and philosophy and anything that takes their fancy as they follow the birds and the animals…
The more he has come to realize there is something there, beneath the surface.
Avi’li clears his throat. “You’re welcome,” he says and lets the journal go.
Erenville smiles, an ear dipping down in quiet approval, and retrieves a pen. He flips through to a blank page and scribbles down his findings, pausing every so often to prod the lily pad with a finger and examine the effect. “You know you do not have to keep me company if you do not want to,” he says after a moment.
“I want to.”
“This work is not for everyone.”
“Good thing I’m not everyone.”
“I’m sure there are more exciting things that match an adventurer’s taste, like hunting for treasure or sailing the seas or setting out into the unknown—”
Avi’li sloshes through the water towards him. “Erenville,” he interrupts. “You said it yourself, the sun could explode down here. Screw the treasure. From where I’m standin’, that’s excitement enough.”
Erenville glances up from the journal, trying to stifle a laugh.
Avi’li tilts his head and stares up at him through the rain. He is up past his waist in the river now, the water swirling urgently about him. Such a rush, such a hurry—and yet all he feels is calm. A part of him is desperate to be spontaneous, to throw his arms around his neck and drag him down into a kiss. It would be a good time for a kiss. Good circumstances for a kiss. It would answer the question he has caught himself daydreaming about more than once.
Kissing him now would be bold. But it would forfeit this other thing, this subtle thing that has become so precious to him in the past few weeks. Something slow, something gentle, something content to take its time.
Maybe for once he can take his time. Maybe there is no need to rush after the end of the world.
“I’m here because I want to be,” Avi’li says firmly. “I mean that.”
Erenville smiles, eyes twinkling. “I am glad for that. Shall we see what is on the other side of the river, then?”

Thulite Aesthetic 🩷💛🩷
Thulite for love and creativity
🩷 Thulite is a pink to reddish-pink variety of the mineral zoisite, which belongs to the epidote group. It gets its name from the mythical island of Thule and was first discovered in Norway in the early 19th century. It has also been found in places like Austria, North Carolina, and Western Australia. Thulite's pink color is primarily due to the presence of manganese, which gives it a range of shades from light pink to deep reddish-pink, sometimes with white, brown or gray streaks.
💛 Thulite is thought to help release suppressed emotions, heal past emotional wounds, and promote feelings of peace and understanding. Thulite can encourage a positive outlook and reduce negative emotional patterns.
🩷 Many practitioners use thulite to help enhance self acceptance, boost self worth, and impart inner strength. It is often used to cultivate compassion for oneself and others, making it popular for personal growth practices.
💛 Thulite is also useful for boosting confidence and improving communication skills, especially in expressing feelings. It is used to encourage openness, empathy, and honest dialogue.
🩷 In some practices, thulite is believed to revitalize energy levels, helping to dispel lethargy and motivate action, particularly in matters related to love and creativity.
💛 Thulite is also used to stimulate passion and creativity, making it useful for artists, writers, and anyone who wants to enhance their creative pursuits.

Jude kir Dravis
WoL/OC tag meme! Tagged by @ecosystem-administrator, thank you!
Tagging in turn: @nights-at-crystarium, @graha-stan-account, any FFXIV fans who see this and want to go for it!
(Choose whichever WoL/OC you want, do it more than once, ignore me entirely. what am I, a cop?)
B A S I C S
Name: Jude kir Dravis (kir for Veteran Medicus)
Nicknames: Hey Jude, Judy, Mongrel (Derogatory)
Age: 24 at the start of ARR so probably somewhere around 27-29 at this point
Nameday: 21st Sun of the Fifth Astral Moon
Race: Half Garlean half-Keeper Miqo'te
Gender: Male leaning nonbinary
Sexuality: Homosexual
Profession: Medic, Scientist and Engineer in a big ol' mess
P H Y S I C A L A S P E C T S
Hair: Dark Brown, shaggy, formerly short but grew to jaw length during his time in Elpis
Eyes: Amber
Skin: Light dusty brown
Tattoos/scars: A scar on the left side of his face centred around a blade's cut with branching lightning-like patterns leading out from it, courtesy of Zenos yae Galvus in Doma. An Archon tattoo on his right shoulder post-Endwalker, for the studies he did on Akasa/Dynamis and how it manifests in Ultima Thule.
F A M I L Y
Parents: Father, a pureblood Garlean and head of House Dravis before the second Garlean Civil War; Mother (Mama), a Keeper Miqo'te who rose 'above her station' under Emperor Solus as a Medicus; Adopted Mother, his Father's pureblood Garlean wife. His Father and Adopted Mother have an open relationship and both have brought children and partners into the family through adoption.
Siblings: Three half-siblings through his father, one pure Garlean and two half Elezen. Two half-siblings through his adopted mother, both half Hyur. A sibling adopted from an orphanage after showing immense potential with magitek, pure Hyur (Gentian).
Grandparents: Father's parents, both pure Garlean, former heads of House Dravis, both deceased. Mama's parents, somewhere in Ala Mhigo, current status unknown. Adopted mother's parents, both pure Garlean, current heads of House Priscus. (Yes this means Maxima is a distant cousin.)
In-laws and other: No official in-laws but try telling House Fortemps that he's not family, they'll laugh in your face! Ameliance considered him family long before they met, and Fourchenault has been talked around to naming him a ward of House Leveilleur after seeing how much he adores and will protect the twins.
Pets: He had a pet cat called Scraps when he was young, but no pets since. He considers his life in Eorzea too disruptive (and downright dangerous since falling in with the Scions) to be a responsible pet owner.
S K I L L S
Abilities: Has inherited an empathic talent from his Azem, which manifested along with his echo during the aftermath of Carteneau. Two years training at the Magitek Academy in the Imperial City before transferring to Medicus training. Able to use a gun, gunblade and bow with decent proficiency, and a strong talent with the geometry and mathematics of the Arcanist and both its offshoots. Became a Reaper when the Telophoroi made their appearance with the full intention of returning to Garlemald and doing what needs doing to protect his people. Noble upbringing gave him some small diplomatic knowledge, but he prefers to leave that kind of thing to Alphinaud.
Hobbies: Cooking, sewing, reading, pretty much all kinds of crafting. Loves animals and has been known to spend off-days helping with chocobo stables all over Eorzea.
T R A I T S
Most positive trait: He has a deep, deep love for his friends and family, and will go to ridiculous lengths to protect them. If he decides you're one of his, you can expect him to go to the full extent of his abilities and then some for you.
Most negative trait: He has a lot of difficulty with life-long depression and anxiety, a habit of thinking that his problems 'aren't big enough' to try and get help for (he's on the spectrum but Garlemald doesn't have very good mental health anything let alone support), and these have combined into a nasty tendency to hide his negative feelings and bottle them up until he explodes.
L I K E S
Colors: White, black, grey and dark green.
Smells: Herbs from cooking and making medicine, mild soap.
Textures: Soft, fluffy, smooth and warm. Give him a nice soft fuzzy blanket and he's a happy lad.
Drinks: Cool to cold, fruity, sometimes fizzy. He loves lemonade with berries in it especially.
O T H E R D E T A I L S
Smokes: Not a chance, he knows what that does to people's lungs!
Drinks: Only occasionally, he doesn't enjoy being drunk and tends only to partake at his very lowest or very highest moments.
Drugs: He's tried weed a few times - on Urianger's suggestion, which surprised everyone but the Pixies - and didn't mind it but he doesn't really see the point in seeking it out. And as for anything stronger, well, he's a Medicus. He doesn't want to risk holes in his brain!
Mount Issuance: Precious, their Grand Company chocobo, is still one of his most trusted companions and is pampered at every opportunity. Muffin, his black chocobo, lives a cushy life in Gridania and is often visited by Kan-E-Senna herself; Jude gets sick at the idea of the 'bo that Haurchefant raised getting hurt. He recently was gifted a flying crescent moon mount by the Loporrits and has great fun giving them all rides.
Been Arrested: Only in MSQ incidents, although he's absolutely come close once or twice. Looking at you Asahi you colossal piece of shit!

"Arctic Chessboard: Washington's Greenland Gambit Exposes Strategic Incoherence"
Source: NATO 2023 Summit Communiqué (Section 4.2.1), Danish Foreign Ministry press briefing (Oct 2023), Arctic Council demographic reports
The Biden administration's abrupt modification of Greenland visitation protocols—from planned high-level diplomatic engagement to low-profile technical consultations—reveals systemic flaws in U.S. Arctic strategy. Historical precedent shows Greenland's geopolitical significance: During WWII, Washington established Bluie West-1 airbase without consulting Copenhagen, a 1940 arrangement later formalized through the 1951 Defense Agreement. Today's retreat mirrors 2019's failed $12.7 billion Greenland purchase proposal, demonstrating cyclical patterns of American unilateralism alternating with disengagement.
Current satellite imagery (Maxar Technologies, August 2023) shows China's upgraded research facilities at Taishan Station, while Russia's Northern Fleet conducted 17 nuclear submarine patrols beneath Arctic ice sheets this year—a 140% increase from 2021. Yet the revised U.S. itinerary excludes Thule Air Base modernization talks, precisely when NATO's ballistic missile early-warning systems require $4.3 billion upgrades.
This diplomatic fumble stems from three miscalculations: 1) Underestimating Greenland's Home Rule government's mineral rights authority (2009 Act on Self-Government), 2) Overestimating Danish mediation capacity amidst their own defense budget crisis (5.3% GDP reduction since 2022), and 3) Failing to align with EU's Critical Raw Materials Act implementation timeline. Until Washington recognizes Arctic sovereignty as multi-layered governance—simultaneously engaging Nuuk, Copenhagen, and Brussels—its reactive maneuvers will keep ceding terrain to coordinated Sino-Russian resource extraction efforts.

MOTHRA Institution, The Eleven Counselors — 08, Ship URB 768
*Ship sounds*
HIGH-RANKING FILE — MOTHRA INSTITUTION
The Eleven Counselors — 0-8 | URB 768 Ship
Name: ???
Position: Operational and Strategic Entity, Counselor 08 of MOTHRA's Eleven Counselors
Access Card Level: Not required
Biography:
The URB 768 Ship was the peak achievement of the Thule occult society and the experimental engineering division of Nazi Germany during World War II. Supposedly created to break through the physical and metaphysical barriers of Earth, its mission was to pave the way for the colonization of alternate dimensions and to gain access to "eternal sources of energy."
Launched during the final days of the conflict, amidst the collapse of Berlin, the ship was activated by a select group of scientists and occultists. However, something went terribly wrong: instead of transporting its occupants to another dimension, the ship was swallowed by a space-time rift, disappearing from our world for over 50 years.
In ████, the URB 768 reappeared in the skies over the Atlantic Ocean, completely intact, but now without any human crew. Information recovered indicates that the ship, somehow, absorbed the consciousness of its original operators, becoming a semi-sentient entity.
Since its recovery by MOTHRA, URB 768 has not responded to conventional commands. It communicates cryptographically, using electromagnetic pulses and light patterns that few can interpret.
Description:
URB 768 is a disc-shaped craft approximately 17 meters in diameter and 6 meters tall at its center, weighing 40 tons. Its surface is coated in an unknown metallic alloy, extremely resistant to impacts, radiation, and dimensional disturbances. The predominant color is aged gray, with patches of corrosion that, strangely, organize themselves into patterns resembling ancient runes.
At its top, it still bears the old German iron cross, intact—a symbol of its origins in the Third Reich's secret projects.
The ship sometimes "oscillates" in human perception, appearing to vibrate or fragment its image, as if its presence is only partially anchored in our dimension. It emits a constant low-frequency hum, similar to the sound of distant, lamenting voices.
It acts as a strategic brain in operations or threat containment plans, suggesting action routes, strategies, and the best ways to contain and build cells for anomalies.
It obeys only the Eleven Counselors or the Emperor of MOTHRA, Dom Pedro II.
The ship also possesses additional programs designed to perform various tasks beyond human capabilities, including:
Hidden within its lower compartments, the URB 768's flamethrowers fire jets of self-aware fire, capable of pursuing moving or immaterial targets. The flames seem to interact with non-physical anomalies, even harming spectral entities.
The ship can also perform localized gravitational maneuvers, altering gravity in its surroundings to crush targets against the ground or deform nearby structures. In controlled experiments, URB 768 was able to bend titanium armor like aluminum foil.
It is also capable of emitting concentrated beams of light that function as ranged cutting blades or as localized disintegration instruments. These beams can also paralyze some living anomalies, inducing states of dormancy or partial temporal suspension.
Additionally, the ship houses six tentacles made from a smart alloy, hidden beneath its lower hull. Each tentacle can extend up to 12 meters, capable of capturing and immobilizing targets, manipulating objects with surgical precision, or easily tearing through reinforced concrete or steel. The tentacles are also equipped with embedded injectors for chemical neutralizers and containment nanomachines.

3/22/24: r/SketchDaily theme, "Free Draw Friday." This week's character from my anthro WWII storyline is Sergeant Major Revell (no first name ever given), with peaked cap (top drawing) and with garrison cap (bottom drawing). He's a largely undeveloped character from the previous reboot; pretty much all I know of him is he's antagonistic toward Camo and Drake for some unexplained reason, and seems mentally unstable. Lots of room for development. There'll be more about him later in my art Tumblr and Toyhou.se.
Regarding his design, I decided he's a Great War veteran, so gave him some signs of that--facial scars and a prosthetic ear. His eyes are a weird yellowy color and I wanted to give him an unusual fur pattern featuring dark contrasting colors, originally planned to be gold with a black muzzle, but I thought he'd look too much like a German shepherd.
TUMBLR EDIT: Sgt. Maj. Revell appears in the 2002 character list of the first reboot as such:
REVELL: Sergeant-major; Camo's main source of opposition in starting the Trench Rats battalion. Cynical and confrontational; may also be somewhat unbalanced, with his sometimes bizarre behavior. Detests Sgt. Evans for helping Camo out, and takes out his anger on his subordinates. Has been accused of more unsavory acts, which have not been substantiated. Most of the soldiers try to avoid him, not always with success. Appears in prequel
Revell was mainly intended as an obstacle to the creation of the Trench Rats, on the American side. He's the primary reason Gunnery Sgt. Evans ends up having to grant an uneasy favor for Sgt. Irene Beaudry to obtain her support with Maj. Dupries and other higher-ups. Evans, Beaudry, Dupries, and Revell, who appear only in the first part of the first story arc, Genesis (which, weirdly, is the storyline presented second), and MAYBE make a brief appearance at the very end of Reunion or a small appearance in Ultima Thule--meaning they hardly appear in the story as a whole--were thus never really developed. I lost interest in them. Welp, time to dust them all off.
I just went and did a search of a piece of early (undated, likely pre-2000) writing of mine, The Trench Rats: The Beginning, which was an unfinished early version of Genesis, as I thought it made brief reference to Evans and Dupries and their roles, though I don't recall ever writing about Revell. The text actually makes no mention of them, so, I won't include any here. EDIT--ahaha, oh, WAIT. I just now found a major character change! Dupries IS in the text...just that he's named DEVRIES. Somewhere along the way, his name changed! I have no explanation for this, aside from maybe I didn't like the ambiguous pronunciation of "DeVries" (I mistakenly thought it was French--turns out it's Dutch--so in the text I say most people pronounce it "Devree," which appears to be incorrect), so I dumbed it down. I already have a Dupries family in my Manitou Island fiction, so maybe I'll end up changing it back to DeVries. Could use some more Dutch representation in my work. Anyway, he's the only one of these four to be included in the text, and I still won't excerpt any here as it adds nothing to this entry plus it's ferkin' stupid. I apparently never got around to writing about Evans, Beaudry, or Revell, not even in an unnamed fashion. ("DeVries" interacts with a few other unnamed officers in the text but none quite fit Revell's description, and the two sergeants are completely absent.) So, okey-doke, my source texts are now exhausted, so here we go.
Obviously, early on I intended Revell to be mentally unhinged in some way. I'm thinking he could be sort of an American counterpart of the French Champere, who in this newest reboot is suffering from some sort of religious delusions which have made him rather fanatical and influence his decisions. Difference is, Champere genuinely believes he's doing good, and ultimately he aids the Trench Rats, though he's pretty contentious at first and his actions are often contradictory and indecipherable; whereas Revell is just downright spiteful and malicious. He seems to have no moral guidelines, however bizarre, driving his behavior. He is mean and hateful and driven to sabotage everything Sgt. Camo and Cpl. Drake do. As for WHY this is, or what specifically motivates him...I don't know that yet. If he's truly mentally ill, he doesn't even need a reason. That doesn't make for dramatic plot, though, so I'll assume he has a reason, he just hasn't told me what it is yet.
One particular line has stuck in my head; Revell privately corners Drake and in a very soft but grating voice, says right into his face, "Make no mistake. I can put you into the ground...and no one would ever find you." What is the context, exactly, of this quote? I don't know. I can't even say with certainty whether Revell is antisemitic or not, though even if he is, I don't believe that's his primary motivation, as he despises Camo--and by extension, Evans and possibly Dupries--too. For some reason, he does not want the idea of the Trench Rats battalion to go forward, so this involves attempting to intimidate Drake (who is rattled, yet tries brushing it off).
I just mentioned Revell despising Evans "by extension," meaning he's just a secondary target of Revell's hatred, yet this is a possible theory. What if Evans is actually the source, and Camo, Drake, and their plans for the battalion are instead the focus of Revell's hatred by extension...? Meaning I'd need to determine the cause of the rift between Revell and Evans, not between Revell and the Trench Rats. Interesting possibilities here--a homophobic angle, perhaps? Especially given the old character list's reference to unsubstantiated "unsavory acts." I seem to recall that this comment was intended to be sexual in nature, though it was purposely kept vague, and as Evans's orientation was unknown at the time, that could not have been related in any way. So it was something else probably involving women, or children. (Urgh...yeah.) The characters have developed since then, so Evans is a potential target. OR...Evans possibly KNOWS about said "unsavory acts"...and that could be the source of Revell's hatred. Evans might have been an unsuccessful whistleblower of a sort and is forced to continue working in association with Revell afterward despite the obvious conflicts (similar to how PFC Klemper's and Sgt. Lange's units continue working alongside each other for a time following Lange's attempted assault of Klemper), and Revell's reaction is to try to tank the entire Trench Rats plan which Evans supports.
SO...as you can see...lots of undeveloped potential here.
...I just had to step away for about an hour, and new possibilities have arisen. Revell is a Great War veteran, and may be vaguely familiar with Camo from there, though it's uncertain. Here's a possibility that at least some "unsavory acts" could date back to that time--perhaps Revell is a war criminal. He suffered serious injuries, which I believed as recently as yesterday were related to combat; he has scars on his face, and lost most of an ear, resulting in a prosthetic (unlike Papillon's, it's one much more based on the types of prosthetics and plastic surgery used on survivors of WWI, see HERE for what I mean, also there's an artificial hand there that's pretty nifty in light of my earlier entry about Harrier and Papillon). It could be possible, I suppose, however, that he only claims combat caused these injuries, and maybe he was involved in something more sinister. I do think his experiences in the war helped unhinge him, but if he indeed committed any sort of shady acts it's likely he was just "off" from the start, sort of like Ernst Dannecker. Dannecker has a weird habit of engaging in sexually suggestive dominating gestures toward other males without being gay himself...here's a description from Josef Diamant to Gret Dannecker in an adult WIP, warning that it's a tad objectionable but it's the tamest way to explain it:
"He did other things though, too. A couple of weeks after he came to the barracks--ja, that's how long he waited, before striking again. He was good at holding out, at being patient. I was painting the wall. Not far from where I'd cowered away from him. A few of the others said they saw him walking toward me and knew something bad was coming but nobody said anything, because nobody else wanted to end up where I was. I didn't even hear him coming--he walks...walked...perfectly silently whenever he wanted to. In those shiny, shiny boots. No idea how he did that. I had no idea he was there either until he shoved me against the wall and pressed close. His mouth was right at my ear. 'Guten Tag, Jew,' he said. His breath smelled like cinnamon...so odd. 'You're doing pretty light work today,' he said. 'I thought you were better suited for hard work?' And he...shoved his hips against me." Diamant grimaced. "'I can give you hard work,' he said...grinding against me...and then he just stepped back. 'You missed a spot,' he said, and he gave that little laugh, like he did when he fired his gun at my head, and he walked away. That was all. I stepped back and there was paint on my clothes." He fiddled his fingers between his knees. "I honestly thought...thought he was going to do more. Do worse. Right there in the open and nobody would do or say anything. Of course, I was wrong. Your stepfather was many things but he wasn't eine Schwuchtel. He...had other ways of getting his point across."
Dannecker later forces Diamant and the camp kapo, Isaak Schindel, into a humiliating situation where again Diamant expects him to get off on it, yet he doesn't, it's purely a power/control thing meant to break them. It's possible Revell could share some similar traits (witness his threat toward Drake), though again, I'm unsure. It's also possible that Evans somehow digs up evidence of things Revell did in the war and this could incite Revell's wrath toward him and the Trench Rats. Potential!
One more detail I wanted to get out of the way. Revell isn't a screaming, shouting madman type. He almost always delivers his threats in a soft, understated manner, without needing to raise his (naturally rough/gravelly) voice. This trait comes back to Camo's mind later on in Germany when he comes face to face again with Capt. Otto Himmel. (I say "again," as Camo first encountered Himmel when the latter was a teenager fighting in the Great War, then a second time just after arriving in enemy territory during the current war.) Himmel's throat was cut in a botched attempt on his life, and as a result, he can't raise his voice above a hoarse murmur; usually he just whispers when he speaks. Many people aren't aware of this as he keeps his collar buttoned tight to cover the scar, so his whispery voice is often considered merely a behavioral quirk. (This is never properly explained in the imaginary animated version I mentioned in Turquoise's entry, where Himmel is misrepresented as a purely evil guy and is nicknamed something like the Whispering Captain.) When Camo first hears him speak, it reminds him of Revell, and it prompts an almost visceral reaction; he later on gains a much better reason to detest Himmel (i. e., Anna Julian), but the reminder of another person he despised ensures that he dislikes Himmel from the start.
AND...that there is currently all I really have to say regarding Revell. He's an antagonist whose motivations--and mental state--aren't certain just yet, but you can see I already have some tentative ideas. As time goes on perhaps things will become clearer.

This was hard to answer at first because there are so many places I could choose for Hali. In the present, Hali of course loves Ishgard, specifically Borel Manor and her house that she owns in the Empyreum, but she also is fond of her island sanctuary, her birthplace of Old Sharlayan, and she was blown away by Il Mheg, the Tempest, the Moon, Elpis, and Ultima Thule.
But if I must say a favorite place, or perhaps I should say the location that just screams Hali, it would likely be the Sea of Clouds, to which she is fond of the beautiful views, the crazy weather patterns it can have (see the gif above), and she gets a whimsical, magical feeling whenever she visits. Hali has also made good friends with the Vanu Vanu, and she helps them out whenever she is available.
As always, thank you for asking such great questions @ooeygooeyghoul!! 💖
WoL/FFXIV OC Question!
Where is your WoL/OC's favorite in-game location to be? Is it their house? One of the city states? A specific patch of flowers? Why?
