now that I've almost finished watching the victim game, I truly truly hope the second season will give us a little bit of intimacy between fang yi ren and xu hai yin and that their relationship will be better developed and showcased because, truth to be said, they do have chemistry. these two are the only ones that understand each other, they literally conduct their life in the exact same way, which is deemed as reckless and egoistic by others, so i feel like there could be a level of sympathy among them that no one else really gets and which could be the element of contrast in the drama.
i don't think we are ever going to get romance, it wouldn't "suit" the characters' trajectory, but i do hope they develop some sort of friendship and attachment towards each other. the drama has everything except for that level of warmth that comes out of a well meaning relationship, in fact everything seems very disrupted, brutal and almost hurried. there is very little space for affection and that too is reserved for relationships that couldn't get their happy ending. at this point (episode 7), it almost feels repetitive. this is why I'm hoping for something different to happen in season 2, especially if it comes as a stronger bond between fang yi ren and xu hai yin. it would also be significant for depicting a more positive version of a relationship and possibly help two extremely lonely and self-isolating individuals to come out and try to find solace in the presence and the existence of the other.

hi there & happy new year! can you please suggest some fcs like Chloe Zhao, Isabel Sandoval, Hong Chau? I'm particularly drawn to them because a) they have personality b) characteristics (which I also have) like Chloe's wide nose, Hong's thin eyes, the non-pale-as-a-sheet skin they all have—qualities that I feel are sometimes erased/downplayed with makeup, photoshop, or surgery due to media issues/racism/colorism. not to be too soppy about it but i find their beauty affirming. thank you <3

The Victims’ Game (2020)
Dir. David Chuang & Allen Cheng
TW // suicide, death
⚠️ Spoilers !! ⚠️
Tumblr media
tbh i was kinda bored with the first few episodes then when i got to know the characters better, i felt some sort of connection with them ?? like i relate a lot to Hsiao-Meng (Yu-Tung Lee) and Fang Yi Jen’s (Hsiao-chuan Cheng) relationship since their relationship is strained and the person that binded their family together has passed away, leaving them to disconnect. at first, i thought it was Hsiao-Meng’s fault that the Last Wish Murders were happening, turns out it was Li Ya-Jun (Ruby Lin) that was making these things happen.
Tumblr media
Li Ya-Jun gives her victims a syringe full of Fentanyl Citrate after granting them their last wish. her victims are mostly people that are losing hope with their friends, family, being accepted, and justice. Li’s first victim was You Cheng-Hao (River Huang), where his/her body was mistaken to be singer, So Ko-yun’s body. his/her body was completely dissolved due to the Pirranha solution that he/she used after overdosing in Fentanyl Citrate. honestly, Hao deserved better, if it wasn’t for Li giving her/him the push to go with what his/her mind was suggesting. (i’m using she/he and he/him pronouns because You Cheng-Hao’s character came out as a transgender woman in the series)
Tumblr media
Li’s next victim was So Ko-yun herself, she was last seen wandering around the city before entering an a abandoned building, giving herself a shot of Fentanyl before pouring gasoline all over her body and burning her whole body. unfortunately, the police were too late to prevent the whole situation from escalating. So Ko-yun’s case was honestly so sad because she had a mother that was supportive of her work; her mind was clouded with jealousy over the new singer that her recording studio was recruiting, the lady just wanted to release her album.
i was honestly so frustrated with one of Li’s victims, which was a blind man that had a talent with wood-sculpting and this man’s brother that was taking advantage of his disability and talent for his own good. living in a huge mansion, being given an award for his ‘talent’, and traveling to art conventions in different countries to showcase his work. i was so happy when Hsu Hai-Yin (Tiffany Ann Hsu) exposed the brother’s wrong-doings, i literally love the smell of revenge. sadly, the blind man met his demise because of Li.
Tumblr media
the last few episodes where Fang Yi-Jen was confronting Hsiao-Meng about what has been happening to both of them for the past few years made me quite emotional. Hsiao-Meng was in a dark place after being left by her father and having to work as a hostess just to pay for her mother’s hospital bills. i honestly can’t explain it well since i’m not sure how to explain the strained relationship i have with a very close relative but i feel for her, and i’m happy that she’s slowly managing to get better.
Tumblr media
Fang Yi-Jen had problems with communicating with other people since he has Aspergers (a developmental disorder characterised by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests), but it felt so bittersweet when he got in touch with his daughter again, althought some would wish for it to happen sooner. the line, “i thought that having a family would make me become the normal person i wanted to be,” struck me the most. i also felt so bad because he thought that doing so would make him “normal”. personally, there’s literally no right definition of “normal” since we have different perspectives of what normal is. Fang Yi-Jen knew he was different, he wanted to be normal, to live a normal life, its nice to see that he finally reconnected with his daughter, even if its in bad or dangerous circumstances.
“what they needed wasn’t the courage to take their lives, but a bit of hope to keep on living.”
this line honestly hit too close to home. what Li did to those people was so unfair and infuriating, she literally did all those things under the illusion that she’s doing it for the better, that granting them their last wish was enough before they died, that there wasn’t any space for improvement anymore.
Tumblr media
in conclusion, the episode made me curious, infuriated, and numb lmao. i’ll probably be numb for a couple of hours.. which may turn to days. i like this show though.
thank you for reading !

Taiwanese stars Tiffany Ann Hsu and Roy Chiu announce marriage
SINGAPORE - Taiwanese stars Tiffany Ann Hsu and Roy Chiu - who played lovers in Taiwanese movie Man In Love (2021) - have taken their romance off screen and tied the knot.
Rumours of them dating have swirled ever since Man In Love, a remake of a 2014 Korean film, opened and became a huge domestic hit in Taiwan. The movie also landed Chiu, 40, a nomination for Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Awards this year, but the win went to Chang Chen for his role as a cancer-stricken detective in mystery drama The Soul.
Chiu and Hsu have shied away from confirming their relationship until Friday (Dec 10), when they caught fans by surprise and announced their marriage on their social media accounts.
It said: "We once said that we'll share if there's happy news to be shared. Here is the happy news: we got married."
The posts came with the same photo - of Hsu hugging Chiu and leaning her face close to his. Their wedding rings are visible in the shot. Taiwanese news reports say that the pair officially registered their marriage on Dec 7, with veteran host Pauline Lan as their witness.
Many of their celebrity friends like actress-producer Ruby Lin, Taiwanese band EggPlantEgg, actor Chen Bolin and singer Eric Chou congratulated them in the comments section.
Both stars have had fairly well-documented romantic lives. Hsu, 37, openly dated fellow actor Ethan Ruan for eight years before breaking up in 2015. Ruan reportedly cheated on her four times over the course of their relationship. She later dated a cinematographer for several years but Hsu confirmed in May this year that they split amicably.
Chiu has also been linked to various A-list stars. He reportedly dated and later had an ugly breakup with singer Rainie Yang after they filmed the drama Original Scent Of Summer (2003). Coincidentally, Yang is one of Hsu's best friends - the two are high school mates. Yang is now married to Chinese singer Li Ronghao.
Chiu was also rumoured to be with Taiwanese actresses Joe Chen and Ning Chang, as well as Chinese actress Tang Yan.

To celebrate the milestone, both cast and crew of the film got together to hold a special event to thank fans for their unwavering support.  Fans lucky enough to get in chowed down on some steamed pork and lover’s tea whilst posing for selfies with their favourite actors including Roy Chiu who played debt collector A-Cheng and Tiffany Ann Hsu who played the debt ridden lady who stole his heart.

Quote
New state unemployment claims increased last week for the first time in nearly four months, disturbing evidence that the struggling economy is backsliding at a time when coronavirus cases are on the rise. After a flood of claims as the pandemic shut businesses early in the spring, weekly unemployment filings fell sharply before flattening in June. But on Thursday, the Labor Department reported more than 1.4 million new applications for state benefits last week, up from about 1.3 million in the preceding two weeks. Another 975,000 jobless workers filed for benefits through an emergency federal program, also an increase. Unlike the figure for state claims, that number is not seasonally adjusted. Claims are rising just as a $600-a-week federal supplement to jobless benefits is set to expire and Republican infighting has kept the party from putting forward a proposal for further aid, much less negotiating with Democrats on a bill. The discouraging news from the Labor Department followed a Census Bureau survey showing that four million fewer people were employed last week than the week before. It was the fourth straight decline, suggesting that nearly all the job gains since mid-May had been erased. “At this stage, you’re seeing all the wrong elements for recovery,” said Gregory Daco, the chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. “A deteriorating health situation, a weakening labor market and a softening path for demand.” Mr. Daco said the rush to reopen in many states had been counterproductive, contributing to the increasing virus caseloads, particularly in the South and West, that are compelling businesses to close again. “Increasingly I fear that we’re going to see net payrolls in July will show an actual decline” when the next monthly jobs report is released, he added. About 30 million people — roughly one in five American workers — are drawing jobless benefits. Without congressional action to extend the weekly federal supplement, the unemployed will be left with less money to pay for food, medical care, rent and other bills. Also nearing an end is the federal Paycheck Protection Program, which provided small businesses with emergency loans that spared many workers from layoffs. The stubbornly high rate of new unemployment claims “suggests that the nature of the downturn has changed from early on,” said Ernie Tedeschi, a policy economist at the equity research firm Evercore ISI. In addition to reflecting renewed shutdowns, he said, the setbacks on the job front may indicate something more fundamental. “It might be that businesses are running through their first line of credit,” he said, “and now they’re facing the music of an economy that has recovered a little bit but not nearly enough.” In that case, temporary business closings and layoffs would increasingly turn into permanent ones. On Thursday, the owner of Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant became the latest of a string of large retailers to file for bankruptcy. It announced that 1,600 of its 2,800 stores around the country would be shut. Wieden+Kennedy, an ad agency that has worked with clients like McDonald’s, Ford and Procter & Gamble, said this week that it had laid off 11 percent of its work force after paring expenses and cutting executives’ pay. “We negotiated this as long as we could, but W+K and Covid-19 have reached an impasse,” the company said in a statement. “How long this will last seems to be anybody’s guess, so we have had to make some hard choices.” During the worst of the last recession, weekly unemployment insurance applications never exceeded 700,000. Since mid-March, new state claims have yet to fall below a million. States have been whittling away at a backlog of filings, but delays in some places persist. Behnaz Mansouri, an attorney at the Unemployment Law Project in Washington State, said her office was still averaging 200 phone calls a week from people who had received no benefits after waiting months, or who had inexplicably had them cut off. Recently there has been slow progress, she said. A number of people who appealed a decision in March, April and May are beginning to be called in for hearings. Workers who have waited the longest, Ms. Mansouri said, are often those who have disabilities or don’t speak English well. In Oklahoma, hundreds of frustrated workers camped out overnight hoping to sort out delays with their unemployment claims at one of the large-scale processing sessions that officials were holding around the state. And in Texas, applicants have taken to the state’s Workforce Commission page on Facebook to complain of having been unable to reach the agency despite calling hundreds of times. Daniella Knight said her husband, Nicholas, applied for unemployment benefits in Virginia when he was laid off in June from his job as a litigation data analyst, and “we have not gotten one dollar.” Even before this setback, “we were already barely making it,” said Ms. Knight, who lives in Alexandria. She had been working part time at a property-management company during the day while her husband took care of their three children — 3, 5 and 9 years old. During his 4 p.m.-to-midnight shift, she took over the household duties. After kissing the children good night, she worked at her second job, as a pediatric sleep consultant. Ms. Knight called it “tag-team parenting.” But she put up with the exhaustion and stress so they could save enough to stop renting and buy a house with more than one bathroom. The coronavirus pandemic added full-time home-schooling to their load. She stopped going to the small property-management office during the day to avoid contagion, instead driving there at night when it was less crowded or empty. “Mom and Dad were at the end of our ropes, beyond exhausted,” she said. “I started to have panic attacks.” Her husband recently found another job, working for the government, but has to wait at least six to eight weeks for his security clearance. “We still have to pay our bills, our utilities, our rent, everything,” Ms. Knight said. The monthly cost of their health care alone is $1,600, which they had to tap their savings to pay. They are hoping the unemployment benefits come through soon. “We can’t get by with another two months without that,” she said. The pain of job losses can be found in every corner of the country, but Black men have had particular difficulties, said Peter Q. Blair, a co-director of the Project on Workforce at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The government’s June jobs report showed that while unemployment for every other group declined from May, the rate for African-American males over 20 rose to 15.8 percent from 15.3 percent. “It’s important that we look at the way in which this crisis is having a disparate effect on the African-American community, particularly Black men,” he said. And while the overall jobless rate dipped in June to 11.1 percent from a peak of 14.7 percent in April, troubling weaknesses are growing more prominent. “The increased joblessness will certainly hinder the economic recovery, especially if the Congress fails to extend the supplemental benefits that were part of the CARES Act,” said Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist at Northern Trust. Passed at the end of the March, the legislation created a temporary federal jobless program, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, to cover freelancers, part-time workers and others who do not qualify for regular state jobless aid. It extended jobless benefits for an extra 13 weeks for state recipients who exhausted their aid allotment. And it helped jobless workers survive the cash crunch by approving a weekly $600 benefit — a supplement that essentially expires on Saturday. That extra money “provided critical support over the last several months,” said Rubeela Farooqi, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics. Such support — even at a reduced level — “is going to be increasingly important going forward,” she said. Ben Casselman and Tiffany Hsu contributed reporting.
