Since their formation in 2016, the career of Ljubljana's Joker Out has been continuously taking off. Since the 2023 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, the name of this band - made up of five young men from Slovenia - has been on everyone’s lips. On their European tour in spring 2024, the band, together with two support acts, also graced Cologne with a concert at Die Kantine. We were there to attend the performance.

Sector 5 from Berlin opened the evening, reaching the international fans in attendance with lyrics and stage announcements in English. Their musical mix of pop, rock, and rap positively surprised not just us, but got the rest of the crowd singing along as well. Confidently and professionally, the four musicians captured the room's attention and presented a set that was definitely worth the experience.

JC Stewart, a Northern Irish musician who lives and works in London, followed as second support act. He delighted fans not just with the charming story of how he crossed paths with Joker Out in an Irish pub in London, but also with a confident one-man show that needed no more than his talented voice and a guitar to convince the crowd.

During the break before the main act, the anticipation in the room rose noticeably, and the excitement was palpable. Joker Out entered the stage to the euphoric chants and cheering of fans.

Gola, from their debut album Umazane Misli (2021), kicked off the evening's set, and the reactions of the crowd were unmistakable – everyone in the hall was captivated from the very first second.

That a band whose lyrics are mainly in Slovenian is able to win over an international crowd, let alone get them to dance and sing along, is not just rare, but also speaks to the engaging personalities of the five musicians. Whether Ona, Vse Kar Vem, Demoni or Plastika, the band’s stage presence tore down all language barriers, demonstrating impressively that music connects people regardless of the language spoken.

However, there was more than one linguistic peculiarity that evening: for example, singer Bojan Cvjetićanin even used the song Tokio to teach the excited fans a bit of Japanese.

One highlight was the as-yet unreleased song Behind Those Eyes, whose original working title was said to have been the German word "Schlager", as the band revealed with a wink. The official release of this song on their announced second [sic: third] album will certainly be highly anticipated.

Similarly well-received by fans was the ballad Metulji ("Butterfly" in English), which was, in accordance with the title, performed by Bojan wearing pink wings and butterfly headgear in the middle of the crowd.

Joker Out opted to pass on the classic "encore game" in which the band retreats backstage in anticipation of being called back by the crowd. Instead, they transitioned into the long-awaited karaoke version of Umazane Misli, where not just the band, but also the fans, are invited to sing the verses [sic: the chorus] in their national language.

From German to Polish, Russian, Greek, and more - anyone brave enough to take the microphone that Bojan carried through the crowd got their own chance to put on a little live performance.

With Carpe Diem and Novi Val, the 16-song set then came to a successful end, and Joker Out were seen off the stage with a well-earned thunderous applause.

We were happy to have experienced this evening and could write many more words to describe the talent, the performance, and the charisma of Joker Out – and yet, nothing can do these five musicians justice except seeing them live for yourself.

If we get our way, this will not be our last Joker Out concert. As soon as the chance presents itself, we'll be happy to see them again.

Manga I Enjoyed in 2022

Happy New Year, everyone! I know this is somewhat late, but better late than never. I originally wanted to do this in a video format like I did for my favorite 2021 manga. But after some health issues that started late last year and finally went away this month, I decided to write about my favorite manga of 2022 instead of recording myself in an awkward manner.

Here we go!

Honorable Mention: Choujin X by Sui Ishida - This title reminds me so much of Masakazu Katsura’s ZETMAN. It’s about a young man named Tokio Kurohara who suddenly becomes a supernatural being called a Choujin after being attacked by one in the street. Tokio then enters a world where he meets other Choujins, good and bad, and realizes that he’s part of a larger scheme that potentially involves him being a “god/savior” of all Choujins. I love the art and the story is fascinating. I feel that this is potentially Ishida at his finest when he’s not being rushed to create a fun story (which is what happened with Tokyo Ghoul: re). I’m glad that chapters of this series are somewhat sporadic as it allows time for a more structured story and one that I know Ishida is wanting to tell.

On to my top 5 of the year!

No.5 - Kaiju No. 8 by Naoya Matsumoto - After Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man, this is the next big breakout anime hit from Shueisha. Kafka Hibino was once a young man who wanted to become a kaiju-fighting soldier alongside his childhood friend, but instead is now a 30+-year old cleaner of kaiju remains. He one day encounters a certain powerful kaiju who enters his body. Kafka becomes a threat of humanity all while retaining his. He enters a kaiju defense force in order to control his abilities and protect those he cares about.

When I saw promotional art of the series posted all over France last year, I realized I had to check this series out. I’m so glad I did. The art is amazing, the story is intense, and the soldier outfits are really cool. Kaiju No. 8 satisfies any fan looking for something new that’s similar to Attack on Titan.

No. 4 - Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe - I don’t really hear many people talk about this series, but I feel this is one of the best fantasy stories I’ve read in a while. It also has one of the best manga heroines this decade so far. Frieren is a long-living elf who once saved the world from a demon king alongside a group of adventurers. 50 years later, she embarks on another journey to see off the hero who changed her life long after his death all while making note of humanity’s struggle to define themselves with the short life span they’re given.

I feel that this series is somewhat Yotsuba&!-ish in terms of having memorable chapters that are one-offs. However, when it gets to the major story arcs, Frieren excels in delivering gut punches. The flashback scenes are amazing and Frieren has a variety of facial expressions that make readers appreciate her. I have kept up with the Japanese releases and the story keeps getting better and better. This series has a way of making you think about human nature.

No. 3 - Akane-banashi by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue - I got into this series in the Fall after hearing Hideaki Anno and Eiichiro Oda praise it. This is arguably the best series in Weekly Shonen Jump right now and it’s not even a battle manga. Akane Osaki, a young girl whose father was a rakugo performer, is on a mission to become the best rakugo performer in all of Japan after her father was shamed in front of a major rakugo audience. It’s very refreshing and the hype does remind me of the early days of The Promised Neverland. 

This manga is a really good case of how to use art and panels to tell a very cool and well-paced story. I also love how the main character is written as she stands out among the many popular male Jump protagonists. I think what makes this series so good is how relatable the characters and setting are. There’s always something exciting happen in every chapter because of that.

No.2 - Sensei’s Pious Lie by Akane Torikai - This series isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I can’t recommend this to anyone who’s experienced sexual trauma and hasn’t healed completely from it. But I can’t help but be enamored with seeing how messy the characters in this series are. Misuzu Hara, a teacher, is a victim of sexual abuse by her best friend’s husband. One day, she finds out a male student of hers is interested in her. Misuzu then learns the student is also a victim of sexual abuse and the two become involved in a complicated entanglement that affects everyone around them. 

This is a very uncomfortable read, but I understood what Torikai was trying to say. When it comes to love and sex, people get caught up with the worst aspects of both in terrifying ways. And there’s ways to overcome them when possible. People are often known as monsters to many are still human beings at their core. You can still care about someone and want them out of your life for good. There’s no one to root in this series and I’m glad Kodansha USA brought this work over because sex (and especially sexual violence) is very often a difficult topic to talk about and life is sadly never that black or white.

No.1 - Goodbye, Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto - Another Fujimoto one-shot on what it means to live in the face of loss. I’ve written about this one-shot in the past and the last pages still stick out to me to this day. I appreciate how Fujitomo uses the main character in a way that shows how a major loss of a relationship can affect someone even when they get older.

I want to remember people who will eventually leave me and celebrate their lives. I just hate how everyone is pressed to move on and not process whatever grief they will experience over their lifetime. Goodbye, Eri is highly relevant to everyone today because there’s only so much one can take when it comes to death and when we don’t take the time to talk about it in a productive way with people who will listen, we lose what makes humanity beautiful. In a time where some folks are talking about immortality and living on via technology, this manga reminds me that what we really want from life is genuine and unconditional love from people.

Shima Seien (1892-1970) artista japonesa de nihonga.

Nació en Sakai y con 13 años se trasladó con su familia a Shimanouchi en Osaka. Aprendió a pintar de forma autodidacta mientras ayudaba a su hermano en su trabajo de diseño, pasando a estudiar con Kitano Tsunetomi y Noda Kyūho.

Shima Seien fue premiada por su Atardecer en Soemon-chō en la 6ª Exposición Bunten (Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes de Japón) en 1912, Festival en la 7ª edición y Naturalidad en la 9ª edición.

En colaboración con las pintoras Chigusa Kitani (1895-1947), Matsumoto Kayō (1893-?) y Okamoto Kōen (1895-?) fundó en 1916 la Sociedad de Cuatro Mujeres para tener más posibilidades de exponer sus obras y obtener otros encargos.

Trabajó el género bijin-ga pero le dio una dimensión de crítica social, posiblemente inspirada en la escritora Akiko Yosano, pionera del feminismo en Japón. En 1918, su autorretrato la muestra con un ojo morado simbolizando los malos tratos infligidos por hombres a mujeres en Japón y es uno de los tres trabajos designados como Propiedades Culturales Municipales de Osaka.

Este trabajo y otros dos más, Dientes ennegrecidos (1920) y Mujer (Pasión de pelo negro) (1917), se expusieron en Tokio en 2021 como parte de una exposición en el Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno de Tokio titulada “Ayashii: Imágenes de bellezas decadentes y grotescas en el arte japonés moderno.”

Se casó por matrimonio concertado en 1921 y junto a su esposo se trasladó a Manchuria (China) en 1927, regresando a Osaka tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial en 1946.

Durante ese periodo no dejó de trabajar, aunque lo hizo para publicaciones orientadas al público femenino con un estilo más suavizado, lo que provocó que su fama se resintiese al perder los elementos más característicos de su obra: independencia y crítica.

En 1970, a los 78 años de edad, falleció de un infarto cerebral. Siete años después, tras fallecer su marido, el Museo de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de Osaka recibió el ingreso, mediante donación, de 88 de sus obras.

Prieš vidurnaktį stovėjau prie judrios sankryžos esančio kiosko, kur mažyčiame ekranėlyje išsinešimui rinkausi karštą sumuštinį. Jį buvo galima valgyti ir vietoje – bet atidžiau įsižiūrėjus pamačiau, kad kėdė klientams buvo ne kas kita, o kaip apversta plastikinė dėžė tuštiems alaus buteliams sudėti. Nors ir ant viršaus buvo pritvirtintas kažkoks odinis paminkštinimas, nutariau nerizikuoti ir naktipiečiauti viešbučio lovoje. Paskutinį kartą ant tokios taros dėžės sėdėjau prieš nepilną mėnesį – perrinkinėdama bulves kaime, ir tie plastikiniai raštai liko įsispaudę ant mano sėdynės turbūt geras tris dienas.

Kioskelio pardavėja / sumuštinių šefė / užsislėpusi profesionali dovanų pakuotoja vyniojo sumuštinį į du papildomus popierius, tada apvilko plastikiniu maišeliu ir viską užlankstė taip, kad galėčiau tą sumuštinį be gėdos įteikti premjerei kaip lauktuves iš tolimųjų rytų. Žingsniuodama atgal iki viešbučio išvyniojau savo sumuštinį (nuoširdžiai nesitikėjau tarp kumpio ir sūrio rasti kukurūzų) ir stebėjau vos paeinančius, absoliučiai išsitaškiusius korėjiečius, iš lėto plaukiančius link netoliese išsimėčiusių metro stotelių. Tokį vaizdą šioje kelionėje mačiau pirmą kartą – trys vyriškiai susikibę per pečius bandė išsilaikyti ant šaligatvio, vienas vaikinas vartėsi viduryje gatvės ir niekaip negalėjo atsikelti, o dvi draugės tvirtai laikėsi už šviesoforo stulpo, nes vos pabandžiusios jį paleisti, tuoj pat nešdavosi į šoną. Buvo paskutinioji ilgojo savaitgalio diena – niekas nenorėjo grįžti atgal į realybę, ir tą akimirką aš jaučiausi kaip niekad gerai juos suprantanti.

Ryte turėjome iš Gimpo oro uosto išskristi į Jeju salą – dar kartą pasidžiaugę, kad susipakuoti daiktus atgal užtruko ne ilgiau kaip 10 minučių, išsiregistravome iš viešbučio ir palikome savo rankinius lagaminus pasaugojimui. Klaidžiojome po Ikseondong kaimelį, kurio tradiciniai korėjietiški namai buvo paversti mažomis, jaukiomis parduotuvėmis, vienas už kitą keistesniais restoranais ir teminėmis kavinėmis. Tikrai nežinau to kaimelio priešistorės – ar ten gyvenę žmonės išmirė? Ar juos iš ten išstūmė? Kaip atsirado galimybė visą kaimelį paversti tokiu rajonu? Bet visa tradicinė išorė buvo išsaugota taip skoningai ir su protu, kad pamiršdavau bevaikščiojanti po parduotuves, o ne po gatvę tarp muziejų.

Dar nebuvo nei 11 valandos ryto, o aš jau gėriau margaritą, ir pro restorano langą nužiūrinėjau vietinius gyventojus, kurie žingsniavo apsirengę kaip rudens-žiemos 2024 kolekcijos podiumu. Pirmomis dienomis galvojau, jog tai tiesiog atsitiktinumas – negali visi korėjiečiai VISADA taip gražiai atrodyti, bet paaiškėjo, kad gali. Ir atrodo! Po kelių sekundžių jau būčiau galėjusi lažintis, kuris praeivis yra turistas, o kuris korėjietis.

Į oro uostą nuriedėjome su vienu metro be persėdimų – ir vėl buvau apžavėta jo patogumu, greitumu, švarumu ir kaina – žinoma, nereikėtų tikėtis, kad viešasis transportas valstybei atneš pelno, bet radusi informaciją, jog 2021 metais Seoulas dėl jo patyrė 680 milijonų eurų nuostolių, likau šiek tiek šokiruota. Gerdama turbūt iš litrinio puodelio ledinę kavą, žiūrėjau į už lango besikaupiančius juodus audros debesis ir tikėjausi, kad lėktuvas pakils ir skris su tokia pačia ramybe, kokia mus sutiko Gimpo oro uosto darbuotojai. Taip, nesu mačiusi VISŲ pasaulio oro uostų, bet mačiau jų daug ir tikrai skirtingų – ir dar niekur kitur neturėjau tokios pačios patirties. Darbuotojai patikroje net neleido man pačiai susikrauti daiktų į dėžės – jie iš lėto laukė, kol visas mano šlamštas privažiuos arčiau jų konvejeriu, tada pagarbiai viską sudėjo į krepšelius, neleido man nusiimti nei batų (OK, didesniuose oro uostuose irgi nereikia, jeigu eini per tą besisukančią x-ray patikros kabiną, bet čia buvo tie paprasti "vartai"), nei saulės akinių (???), nei diržo. Ir viskas vyko tokioje tyloje ir ramybėje, kad net pamiršau nerimauti dėl savo baigiančio praplyšti skysčių maišelio.

Automobilių nuomos punkte atsidūrėme jau sutemus, kaip kokiam banke išsimušėme numerėlį, paspaudę vieną vienintelį suprantamą mygtuką – FOREIGNER. Darbuotoja iškart paprašė tarptautinio leidimo vairuoti (ne, paprastos mūsų teisės netinka – Korėjoje mašinos neišnuomos be keisto popieriuko su štampu iš Regitros už 8 eurus). Buvome išsirinkę SsangYong Torres – mergina greitai spaudinėdama klaviatūros mygtukus informavo, kad mūsų automobilyje nebus angliško GPS – linktelėjome ir patikinome, kad tai nebus bėda, nes vis tiek viskam naudojame GPS programėlę telefone. Padavusi popieriukus pasirašyti, ji mostelėjo ranka į aikštelę ir pasakė, kad mūsų mašina priparkuota vietoje 4-F, rakteliai bus salono viduje. 

Išėję į lauką supratome, kad absoliučiai visos nuomojamos mašinos buvo atrakintos, atidarytas langais ir su rakteliais viduje. Aikštelė net nebuvo kažkaip ypatingai saugiai aptverta nuo išorinių gyvybe dūzgiančių gatvių. Apėmė keistas jausmas – sunku suvokti, kaip čia visi vieni kitais besąlygiškai pasitiki, bet tuo pačiu ir buvo malonu bent porą savaičių pasijausti esant tokios visuomenės dalimi. 

Savo pirmajame Jeju salos Airbnb atsidūrėme per valandą, iš lėto vingiuodami kaimo keliukais. Greitai iškrovę lagaminus ir apsižvalgę po nakvynės vietą – pro virtuvės langus matėsi ranka pasiekiamas mandarinų sodas – patraukėme link artimiausio miestelio paslampinėti mieguistomis gatvėmis, o atsiradus progai, gal kažkur ir pavakarieniauti. Kadangi jau buvo vėlu, daug vietų buvo užsidariusios. Bet mūsų abiejų žvilgsnius patraukė jūrinį konteinerį primenantis pastatas, kurioje viduje degė šviesa. Priėję arčiau pastebėjome antrame aukšte įsikūrusi biliardą, o pirmame aukšte įsikūrusi maitinimo įstaiga net neturėjo durų – tik stumdomus tinklelius, kurie švelniai plevėsavo, kiekvieną kartą į juos atsisukus visu pajėgumu įjungtam ventiliatoriui. Viduje buvo gal keturi staliukai, o prie vieno vakarieniavo pora, kas kelias minutes vis susidauždama sklidinais stikliukais soju gėrimo.

Spėju, jog mus prie kasos iškart pasitiko vietos savininkė – ji šiek tiek kalbėjo angliškai, ir kai pasakėme, kad neimsime išsinešimui, o valgysime viduje – labai nustebo, ir puolė valyti patį didžiausią stalą. Užsisakėme jos firminės vištienos ir alaus, o tuo tarpu aš per priešais esantį veidrodį stebėjau virtuvėje vykstantį veiksmą. Kai per dešimt minučių užsuko trys skirtingos šeimos atsiimti telefonu pateiktų užsakymų išsinešimui, supratau, kad pataikėme į visai neblogą vietą. Paskutinieji užsakymo atsiimti atvyko tėvas su sūnumi – abu apsirengę pižamomis, ir apsiavę tik šlepetes, tyliai lūkuriavo ant vienišos baro kėdės, pastatytos arčiausiai išėjimo.

Savininkė neilgai trukus atšuoliavo link mūsų stalo su viena didele lėkšte vištienos, ir keletu mažyčių, kuriose gulėjo neaiškūs garnyrai. Mudu su Karoliu jau tiesėme rankas link pirštinių ir ruošėmės kibti į vakarienę, kai ji staigiau už mus jau užsimovė pirštinę ir pradėjo plėšyti vištieną nuo kaulo. Klausiamai susižvalgėm, ir pakėlėm akis į ją. Ji pradėjo juoktis.

Mes net vištienos išlaikyti rankose negalėjom ilgiau negu dvi sekundes, ji buvo dar tokia karšta, kad iškart padėjome atgal, o savininkė be jokių neigiamų emocijų ramiai ją plėšė ir dėliojo kažką panašaus į vištienos sumuštinį. Į delną įsidėjusi gabaliuką vištienos, ant jo uždėjo kepto česnako, tada šiek tiek kimchi, ir galiausiai pasėmė iš indelio rutuliuką lipnių, žalsvų ryžių, ir jį užkrovė ant viršaus. Gavosi toks nedidelis, gardžiai atrodantis bokštelis, su kuriuo ji pradėjo žaisti keistą žaidimą – sukinėti tai link Karolio, tai link mano burnos, lyg laukdama, kol kuris nors prasižios kaip koks paukštelio jauniklis. Karolis drąsiai priėmė šitą iššūkį, ir jau po sekundėlės čiaumojo savininkės firminiu metodu sukonstruotą vakarienę. 

Vėliau atėjusi išnešti mūsų praktiškai išlaižytas lėkštes, savininkė besišypsodama, bet be žodžių padėjo ant stalo du vietinius Jeju mandarinus. Aš dar gurkšnojau alų, žiūrėdama į palubėje kabantį medinį kryžių, ir negalėjau nusipurtyti minties, jog valgau vakarienę pas savo korėjietišką močiutę – lyg trumpai valandėlei būčiau gavusi šansą pažiūrėti į vieną savo paralelinių gyvenimų.
