#OTD in 1951 – Death of athlete and gold medal winner, Tom Kiely.
Born in Ballyneale, just outside Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary, Kiely competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics held in St. Louis, Missouri. Kiely faced a monumental task in St. Louis; the ten events by which all-around ability was measured were all contested in a single day, in the following order: 100 yards, shot put, high jump, 120 yard hurdles, 880 yard walk, hammer throw, pole vault, 56 lb weight…

Rudolf Reed die BESOEK van ST. BRANDAN-EILAND
Tumblr media
Tom was toe stroopsoet, en mev.
soos 'n klomp klein katjies.

I’ve lived in Jersey City since 2007, and one of my favorite aspects of this crazy town is its perennial abundance of musical talent. Until fairly recently, however, we didn’t have many “official” spaces for live performance - we made do with shows at bars, galleries and DIY spaces (all of which can be incredible). But seeing some of this town’s talent in a space like White Eagle Hall is another experience entirely. Last night’s “Jersey City Jubilee” was a real treat, curated by local wizard Tom Barrett, in celebration of his new album “You Are And You Always Have Been”. Tom’s been making incredible music in this town for many moons, and true to form, he put together a bill of local legends that reflects the eclectic sounds of our town: the haunting folk and Americana of Sean Kiely, the polished indie grooves of CR & The Nones, the politically-charged riot grrl anthems of The 50 Foot Furies, the post-punk/shoegaze sonic wall of Sunshine & The Rain, and then Tom and his new band The Cuts closed out the night with some high octane renditions of tracks from the new record. The whole evening was MC’d by the JC’s own poet laureate, Mr. Matt Reiter and included a charity auction to raise funds for women’s reproductive rights. Throw in a couple of Norma Tanega and Brian Eno covers, and you’ll understand why I passed out on my couch last night before I could post this recap. What a show! It was a colorful reminder of what makes this city so great to live in - its talent pool, its interconnectivity and its open and inviting culture. Not a single act sounded like any other on the bill, but it all sure as hell sounded like Jersey City. (at White Eagle Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiWRu7_sRVt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

New Rock Music Summer Singles of June 2022
Best New Rock Songs Summer 2022 June Edition
Rock fans are excited about the newest releases of summer 2022. Which ones are your favorites?
Rock Music Spotify Playlist:
The hottest tunes in rock right now with new additions weekly. <follow>
Monster Truck — Golden Woman
Playing loud-and-proud hard rock that mixes strutting ‘70s-style arena sounds with a dash of grunge-era sneer, Monster Truck were formed in Hamilton, Ontario in 2009 by members of two of the area’s most popular bands — guitarist Jeremy Widerman and drummer Steve Kiely had played with the group the Reason, and keyboard man Brandon Bliss worked with Saint Alvia. Eager to play the sort of no-nonsense hard rock they’d grown up on, Widerman, Bliss, and Kiely teamed up with singer and bassist Jon Harvey, and in 2010 Monster Truck cut a four-song EP, originally sold at the merch tables at their shows. <Spotify>
I Gave You Everything - EKKSTACY
EKKSTACY drops new single I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING ahead of supporting Purity Ring in the summer… Low-fi emo rock star EKKSTACY is back with a brand-new downer hit, and we can’t get enough of it.  Last year the promising alt-indie talent shared his NEGATIVE project which was a contemporary blend of emo SoundCloud stylings, old-school rock and dark lyrics.  Now, in his latest release, EKKSTACY has revived his moody indie-rock songwriting with I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING. The guitar-based dejected tune captures the 20-year-old’s introspective sound and is a promising reminder that new music is on the way. <Spotify>
Black + White TV takes soulmates to the moon and back on new single “Traveler”
The singer, Jonathan Joyce, was inspired to write this song from being away from his daughter for years and he misses her to death. He wrote a song about what it feels like being so alone and the person you love is so far away. He thought of several situations while writing such as being away from your soulmate, or your family. In this song, the singer’s soulmate is on the moon, while he is still stuck on earth. She is messaging him from her skylab saying “If you are ever alone, I have a place for you. He sends the message back up to his soulmate saying the same thing “if you are ever alone, I have a place for you down here” <Read the Story>
Greg Hoy & The Boys — Jet Black, Get Back!
Oakland, California plug-in-and-play rock artist Greg Hoy has blown the cobwebs off the van to tour supporting the ‘The Special Party’ album release. Lead single ‘Jet Black, Get Back!’ infuses a classic rock n roll vibe and oozes with an retro fresh attitude. The band’s 2022 Build Back Better tour will also be performing songs from their 6 song EP ‘Enjoy the View’ recorded by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) and mixed by Sylvia Massy (Tool, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty). The band’s video for ‘Can You Take It?’ featuring hip hop legend Ice-T was nominated for a California Video Award (Most Humorous).

Hollywood — 12 am
Rising artist 12AM has released his new single “Hollywood,” out now. The song, co-written and produced by Grammy-nominated producer John Feldmann (Blink 182, Avril Lavigne, Sueco), was inspired by the artist’s return home to Toronto after spending the past few years in Los Angeles. One of his most vulnerable tracks to date, “Hollywood” opens with an acoustic feel and slowly brings listeners into 12AM’s sonic journey of reflection, building into a driving hip-hop beat and an undeniably infectious drum-led drop. <Spotify>
Cabela and Schmitt — Eyes Wide Open
Your eyes are wide open as you twirl around the dancehall. It seems as though everyone else is in slow motion and synchronous as you are bouncing away to the rhythms. This song was inspired during a wedding reception dance where one person was way more into the song than the rest of the crowd. Mixed and mastered by Nicolas Essig from Los Angeles, CA. <Read the story>
Cabela and Schmitt: Freedom Rising
Freedom rising by cabela and schmitt is about how those in authoritative positions around the world who are constantly pushing the masses into a molded type of thinking keeps people down. Rather than allowing the people to think for themselves and exercise freedom of speech to rise up and realize their true potential, there is a consistent suppression of spirit. This pressure is beginning to take hold all over the world and many are stepping up to try to make a change for the better. <Read the story>

Why do only fools and horses work?

Alice Cicolini “The ‘Museum Rietberg' in Zurich is a hugely inspiring place for me, built on the private collection of Eduard von der Heydt, objects from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Most inspiring for me is the Archive room: it places objects from different cultures and centuries together, where the only unifying quality is their material. In doing so, the Museum has revealed the extraordinary way in which ideas, motifs and forms are a shared language across these vast geographies.” - Alice Cicolini, Jewellery Designer. Alice Cicolini, former director of arts and culture for the ‘British Council’ in India has forged a career by channelling the energy of Eastern influence into exquisite and thoroughly modern, handmade jewellery. Cicolini was born in London. Her mother was an academic and a lover of art who encouraged all cultural pursuits and immersed her daughter in an abundance of books and experiential gardening. An only child, Cicolini was brought up in an imposing Victorian semi, lined with eclectic William Morris wallpapers. Here “make do and mend’ was the mantra”; dolls’ clothes were fashioned from old material scraps, their houses constructed from discarded cardboard covered with wallpaper off-cuts. After university Cicolini spent her formative years working in London for designers such as Tom Dixon and Orla Kiely. She also began curating design exhibitions and wrote a book ‘The New English Dandy’ . A job as director of arts and culture for the ‘British Council’ in India followed and she swapped north London for New Delhi. https://www.instagram.com/p/COh680OFsvg/?igshid=upk9qejrompf
