Needs vs Wants and reality.

I have said more than a few times that there is an issue with vacuum tube electronics. That is the tubes are inconsistent and have significant variance in how they sound. One tribal segment thinks this is a feature and play at the "tube rolling" game. Vendors take advantage as it sells more product. People who just want to keep a good thing going are at the mercy of the situation.

A secondary concern is Audio is competing with Musicians for the limited supply of certain glass.

My New/Old tube amp takes a full dozen of fragile glass devices. The current set are fine with decent quality US made Philips. So I guess you could call them NOS if the late 1980s is old enough for you. As noted before in this stream of words I am checking out replacements as sometime soonish I may need to replace them.

The reality is I don't need to do anything. I have another amplifier of equal or even better quality sitting aside ready for use. If a tube pops I would take 10 minutes tops to be up and running again, unless it takes the house with it. Come warm weather it goes in anyway as the ARC Cl 60 is a hot mother. I may be able to go a few years without spending a penny on glass. So fingers crossed.

But..... here comes the rant.

I want to be sure I get the best tubes for the beast when I do need them. Prices are rising. I also do not want to miss any deals that may come by. One I missed on Black Friday would have saved me a couple hundred bucks. ARC used Russian tubes in the original equipment. My usual supplier has them, but there is a war in Russia. The tap may run dry and frankly I would prefer to not provide any cash to Putin and his fascist state. Logically any in stock in North America has already been paid for.

Are there alternatives? Yes if you go Chinese. I work for a Chinese company and have done business there one way or another for decades. Cheating and fraud is considered good business there, if you can get away with it. Relationships and willingness to confirm things are essential.

If you got that you can get great stuff. Apple makes much of their stuff in China. They watch them like hawks and the company is actually Taiwanese so more reliable right there. It is possible.

I have two suppliers that source from China. Both claim special relationships and pay more to the factory AND they both still check, test, verify, and QC ALL the stuff they get. They offer several choices of the types I need. Those being KT88s or 6550 power tubes.

So the fun starts.

If you search for tests, or comparisons of various brands of tube you will find them. All the ones I found were ten years old or more, when tubes cost a lot less. Current market? Nope.

Also there are two distinct constituencies for this stuff, High End Audio and Guitar amplifiers. Hey I know a couple of those other guys. A good ranking in a guitar amp is not helping me in audio. Guitar players want distortion and weirdness of particular types. I want straight simple linearity.

If you read these reviews it is genuinely disturbing how seriously a new tube of brand x has different bass, mid-range, and treble of one from brand y, or z. In a properly made tube, and in a proper circuit IT SHOULD NOT MATTER!!! I appreciate how these are small and fussy mechanical assemblies, but in the age of lasers and computer scanners it should not be so.

Add to this is no review discusses what equipment they used to evaluate unless it was one of three types of Fender guitar amp. I mean a Dynaco Mk3 is a dead simple circuit with one input and 2 output tubes. The ARC CL 60 has 4 output tubes and two input tubes per channel with regulation and fistfuls of FETS and is an order of magnitude more complex at the same power. That would have an impact for sure.

I cannot afford tube rolling. Three full sets would cost more than a good used car. Each set would take two to three hours to adjust and bias and then a week to burn in. Time and money.

There is that nagging detail that top ten lists are not very reliable in general.

It boils down to a couple scenarios. I get a set of Russian tubes in a year or two when the current ones get tired. I could risk a set of well regarded Chinese "premium" tubes if the price is right.

And this leads to my Coda of this discussion. That other amplifier is as good or better and is a full on Bi-polar transistor beast. Is that scandalous? My Franken-Amp is a modifed Dynaco Stereo 400 stripped and hot rodded. A design from the early 1970s. It has a fraction of the distortion of the ARC, and is clearer, cleaner, and more powerful by a factor of 4. Rough, transistory? No!

Better? Well yes I heard things that are now masked in the Tuber. Yes the ARC has textures to love and admire, but there is a price to pay. They are different and are like a different type of light illuminating a scene. Just a slight change in color, something is enhanced in one light and lost in another. I am enjoying those differences.

I enjoy that I can still hear the differences.

Chrissy and Eddie join a band

In the late 80's, Chrissy and Eddie are living in Los Angeles and decide to start their career as a duo releasing the album Cunningham Munson with little success. When Eddie sees in a local newspaper about a band looking for a guitarist, he decides to apply for the guitarist position. Band members Steve and Billy say that Eddie was the best guitarist they have ever auditioned and decide to invite him to join them, but Eddie says he would accept on one condition, that his girlfriend Chrissy could also join the band. Steve and Billy at first are apprehensive about having Chrissy in the band, but she proves to be an excellent singer, and becomes the lead singer of the band. The band is formed, Chrissy on lead vocals; Eddie on electric guitar; Steve on bass and backing vocals and Billy on drums. After many failures in finding a record label they finally sign with Hawkins Records, an indie label. (Bringing together various genres and styles of music, they don't like to label themselves in just one style of music.) They soon achieve moderate success in America with their first album and become the label's main band because of their potential. The second album puts them on the charts worldwide, placing 2 songs in the Billboard top 10. They are on top of the world, everyone wants to be Chrissy Cunningham, who mixes her sweet way of dressing with the ferocity of rock in her attitude on stage. Besides being considered a fashion icon of the time, she is also considered a sexy symbol, but she hates this title because she prefers to be remembered as a powerful woman and not just a pretty girl. Not only Chrissy is considered a sexy symbol, but the boys in the band as well, they are always in the lists of the most handsome men in music, winning several groupies around the world. But with success come problems with drugs, alcohol, ego fights, breakups and problems with the record company. The third album manages to surpass the success of the other two albums, but while they were having success in music, selling out stadiums and arenas, the personal lives of the members were falling apart, deaths in the family, many internal fights, overdoses, car accidents and controversies. The fourth album is massacred by the critics for being too pretentious and already showing the physical and artistic wear of the members, it is the one that has the lowest sales compared to the other albums. After the album's poor reception, they decide to take an indefinite hiatus. Two members decide to go solo, and have moderate success with their respective audiences. One member goes to rehab after surviving a third overdose, and another member decides to start a family and move away from show business. Ten years have passed, and during all this time they have not spoken to each other. Until one day, at the request of one of the members, they get together for a dinner, they get along so well during this dinner that they decide to record another album, but without the intention of touring because it is too exhausting. During this dinner many apologies were made, many tears were shed. As they were recording the fifth album they felt the need to do some shows to see if the band still had chemistry, if they still had that ferocity from when they were young, but they were afraid to go on tour. The newspapers announced the return of the band, the fans were very happy and started asking for a tour, other artists that were influenced by them said they were very excited for the new tour. With pressure from the fans and the record company they finally decide to do a small tour to promote the album. The tour is a success, the album ends up being the surprise of the year receiving many positive reviews, the tour ends up rekindling the chemistry that they had. Two members start dating again after the third divorce of one of them, one of the members is finally able to come out as gay and get clean from drugs, and another member always brings his family to visit him on tour. They finally get along again.

Description: The Snapdragon Smugglers are the entities that come to mind when one discusses the anomalous black market. Establishing themselves as the kingpins of the black market, they have their hands in multiple pies, each influencing so that they end up on top.

The Smugglers have always had a no human life policy, but recently that has changed. Anomalous humanoids have been going missing and are being sold on the black market, with the only ones being safe from kidnapping being those under 18. Efforts to protect those who are recent adults are underway, but even the best plans won't last forever.

2/5/1927 - Simon Snapdragon begins to amass a larger group to carry out his operations. He chirstens the group "The Snapdragon Smugglers". Rapidly the group expands their selling to other types of illegal goods.

In one hand the past, in the other the future. Shuffle the deck. It took longer than I wished but I've reached the place where I wanted to be for a long time. Married, happy, building a home and a life together. We're in the best place in our relationship that we've ever been and from here the rest will hopefully sort itself out. After years of waiting, my boss finally entered me into the management training course and I finished with flying colors. This time next year I'll be running my own store and theoretically making proper adult money finally in my late thirties, an annual salary instead of an hourly one for the first time. From there, more opportunities. A chance to travel, to leave North America for the first time? A chance to try to make more of my dreams come true? No matter how far I drift, I am always anchored by my past. I don't make five zines per year like I did in my younger days but I sell more than ever when I table at the annual zine fair here every October. I don't fall in love with as many new artists per year as I would like but certain gems still find their way in and I don't give up on the search. General Motors 90-year streak as top US car seller ends

US car giant General Motors has lost its title as America's top car seller for the first time in 90 years.

Japan's Toyota claimed the top spot, selling more than 2.3 million vehicles last year, up 10%.

GM said its sales, which fell 13%, were hurt by the widespread shortage of semiconductor parts that has been affecting the car industry.

The Detroit Company had ranked as the number one US car seller since 1931 and vowed it would bounce back.

"I wouldn't rush out if I were (Toyota) and get a 'We're No 1' tattoo," spokesman Jim Cain said, according to Reuters.

Overall, analysts expect the number of new cars sold in the US is projected to have increased roughly 2% in 2021 compared to 2020 when buyers were reeling from the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

But purchases remain depressed compared to their pre-pandemic levels, as companies grapple with supply chain woes, problems that have also pushed prices higher for consumers many business listings.

"The key constraint for sales continues to be reduced inventory levels as a result of the semiconductor shortage," GM chief economist Elaine Buckberg said in a statement discussing the firm's sales and outlook for 2022.

GM sold roughly 2.2 million vehicles last year down from 2.5 million in 2020, relying on its profitable pick-up trucks and SUVs to boost its bottom line.

Toyota, which saw strong sales of its hybrids and other models, has been less affected than some other carmakers by the shortage of chips, thanks to its decision to build up a stockpile after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. But it has also been forced to cut production amid the shortages business listings.

But America's top car companies have been ceding ground to international rivals well before the pandemic-related snarls.
