My Gender is [NOT] Human Zine is Now Accepting Submissions!

Xenogender: A gender that cannot be contained by human understandings of gender; more concerned with crafting other methods of gender categorization and hierarchy such as those relating to animals, plants, or other creatures/things.

This zine will be a collection of artwork, writing and more created by alterhumans and nonhumans to express both their species identity, gender, and how they intersect. While this zine will have an xenogender slant, everyone who has something to share about how their species and gender overlap are encouraged to submit pieces! Similarly, if you are currently questioning, you are still welcome to participate. Anonymous submissions are accepted.

What Can I Submit?

Both fiction and nonfiction pieces are accepted. As long as what you have in mind fits the theme, it’ll probably be a-ok.

Any content warnings that you feel are necessary for the piece

Any social media handle or personal website you’d like listed in the contributor section

Members of systems are welcome to submit individually or collectively. Please let us know your preference when it comes to attribution.

Once the deadline has passed, the submissions will be crafted together into a single zine and it will be posted on our itch.io as a free PDF.

Submission Guidelines

Each individual may submit up to 3 works to be featured in My Gender is [NOT] Human. Comics and multi-image works count as one piece. Individuals within a system may each submit up to 3 works. All work must be your own! Anyone caught plagiarizing or submitting AI-generated work will be barred from entering My Gender is [NOT] Human and any future zines from us.

Written submissions should not exceed 30 pages and multi-part art entries should not exceed 10 pages. Please keep in mind the zine’s pages will be 8.5x11 and entries will be scaled accordingly to fit that size. We request all art submissions to be sent in either .jpg or .png file formats. 

For stories that use multiple different fonts, we will do our best to preserve the general “feel” of your piece but cannot guarantee we will be able to use the exact fonts or sizes due to restrictions in what fonts we have access to, readability and overarching zine style.

Q: Where will the zine be hosted? What will it cost? A: The zine will be hosted digitally on our itch.io and will be free to download. Our itch.io can be found here: https://ruffledgryphon.itch.io/

Q: Is there a cap on submissions? A: There is none, as long as the file doesn’t start getting too big for our computer we’ll do our best! If there are an unprecedented amount of submissions, we may have to delay the release. In the event that happens, we would communicate that through updates on our tumblr.

Q: Can I update my application after it’s been submitted? A: Yes you may, as long as that is communicated to us before the submission deadline.

Q: Can I rescind my submission? A: Yes you may, as long as that is communicated to us before the submission deadline. This is because once we begin work on the zine, having to remove content mid-way through would throw off the formatting of everything else after. Please take this into account before submitting. 

Q: Will this zine allow NSFW entries? A: No, nothing 18+ will be accepted.

Q: What is your timeline for the project? A: Our submission deadline is May 1, 2024. We are then planning to spend the next month compiling all of the entries. Our goal is to have the zine live by June 1, 2024. If something unforeseen happens and we are unable to make that deadline, we will post an update about it on our tumblr.

Bram has been surrounded by nothing but bullshittery with the Decay of Angels, so having someone like an ENFP around him, would honestly be refreshing. As much as he is a sleepy head, he would appreciate your energy. Sagittarius suns are known to be extroverts, lively and enthusiastic - as much as he is the opposite of that, I feel like you’d balance each other out.

A big big reason why I paired you with Bram is for your musical talents. Its no secret that Bram’s weakness is music, so the fact that you not only can play the violin, but also a singer, makes him swoon. He would get you to either play the violin or sing right next to his coffin - either to put him to sleep or to simply hear you play.

As you are a huge fan of history, particularly the 1800s, Bram would be a perfect muse for you as he literally lived through it! Any questions you have regarding that era, Bram would answer. He may find it a little curious as to why you are interested, but he would answer honestly and to the best of his ability.

Please for the love of God, sew his coat up. Its literally in tatters and something tells me that he refuses to get rid of it. Something about ‘too much history’ behind it. So unlike Bram, you guys match with similar energies. Although she is dignified on the stage, she is very friendly and extroverted with the right people. The main reason why I paired you with Yun Jin is definitely for your musical talents.

So imagine this, she asks you to play the violin at one of her performances! Though of course her style is primarily traditional, she would adore to have her significant other there with her, and performing with her. Speaking of history, if her opera performances are historical based, the two of you can talk about the history to your hearts content!

As you mentioned your singing talents, imaging song rehearsals together. Yun Jin would encourage you to sing along with her, or to simply hear you sing. I can see her watching you proudly, rose tinted glasses and all. If ever you had any performances of your own, either singing or violin playing, she would absolutely pay top money to watch you.

Consider Art I: 2022

Happy Holidays! I hope everyone is having a pleasant holiday season and has recovered from blacking out from Thanksgiving gravy poisoning. This holiday season, I’d like to introduce a new tradition at Consider Nature. As you may know, Consider Nature is dedicated to shining a spotlight on some of the animal kingdom’s most underrated members, animals who get overlooked despite being fucking awesome. To help highlight the beauty of these funky little guys, I would like to introduce the first Consider Art Competition!

For Consider Art, artists are asked to create pieces depicting or inspired by an animal covered in the Consider Nature blog. For those who are not familiar with the blog, I have written articles on the following animals:

Olm (Proteus anguinus)

Indian Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis)

Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis)

Scaly-foot Snail (Chrysomallon squamiferum)

Kaua’i Cave Wolf Spider (Adelocosa anops)

Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex)

Submissions will be judged based on their originality, quality, successful depiction of the animal, and whether or not the judges of the competition and I subjectively like it. All submissions are due JANUARY 6TH! Please check the submission guidelines below before entering your piece, as there is a specific process for entering a piece of art in this competition.

Prizes:

Here at Consider Nature, we are aware that exposure doesn't do a very good job of putting food on an artist's table. So, the top three art pieces submitted for the competition will receive prizes (they aren't going to be big prizes because I don't do this for money, but I'll do my best). The winning artists may choose to receive their prize as an Amazon or Etsy gift card (depending on how much they hate Jeff Bezos).

First place will receive a $50 Amazon or Etsy gift card.

Second place will receive a $25 Amazon or Etsy gift card.

Third place will receive a $10 Amazon or Etsy gift card.

All winning pieces will also be posted on the Consider Nature blog as well as on our social media (with full credit to the artists and links to their social media). Any kind of art will be accepted for this competition. Keep in mind that if you make a physical drawing, painting, or sculpture, you will need to photograph or scan it to submit.

Kickstarter Fuck Up Arrived: "The Tome of Fey Lore" by Fable Spinners

I fucked up because I wasn’t paying attention. But I’m not blaming myself entirely. When I went to download this PDF off of DriveThruRPG, it asked me if I wanted to follow AI projects, and I didn’t think anything of it. When I went to grab the link to the Kickstarter project to use in this post, something told me to look through the “Campaign” section, and, sure enough, there was the “Use of AI” section I messed. This stunned me considering the fact Kickstarter, at one point, said they supported artists and didn’t want AI on the platform. The policy on it now, and it was updated a month ago, is:

“Kickstarter is first and foremost on the side of creative work and the humans behind that work. Whether your project will be approved to raise funds on Kickstarter depends on what those tools are, and how you’re planning to use them. You will be asked to supply this information in your project submission. If your project is approved by our Trust & Safety team, your responses to the questions will appear on your project page.”

The rest of the policy states being Open and Honest is a requirement. What I WISH was a requirement is to have the “Use of AI” section at the TOP of the page!

All the project page says is, “Topaz Gigapixel and Adobe Creative Cloud tools, including Firefly, are used as part of the workflow.” Not very specific. I don’t really know what that means. They got over $30,000 for the project and they couldn’t stall it to hire ACTUAL artists? It’s, also, not mentioned on their website, at the time of writing this. Thanks, Kickstarter, for allowing this shit on your platform after first saying it wouldn’t be. I submitted a ticket regarding it. I’ll give the project this: I have it, so I might as well use it, the writing is good. If AI shit isn’t a deterrent, click here.

I've been working on a Lovecraftian fantasy fairy story starring my OG OC Yadira Root (Nyarlathotep's daughter with Queen Nathicana) and had been hoping to submit it to the Trickster anthology. However, if I don't think it's up to scratch, I'll submit it to next year's fairy-themed anthology.

You can check out my story (written as C. L. Hart) Of Outer Gods and Fallen Angels in the brand-new Fallen anthology. This is primarily a tale of platonic friendship, but there is also a star-crossed lovers arc.

Of course, there are many other wonderful stories in the anthology as well.

I almost forgot to mention that I've finished the A to Z Challenge for this year. Now I need to stop being a socially awkward little fucker and pay some of the other participants a visit. I also need to revive my promotional efforts. This year started off a bit shaky as far as my mental well-being was concerned.

Summary

Draconity isn’t solely from ages past, but something that still burns bright in the modern age. This zine will be a collection of pieces created by nonhumans and alterhumans about what it means to be draconic in the present day (or even future). Energy suppliers should stop forcing vulnerable households on to prepayment meters, the government has said.

Business Secretary Grant Shapps’ warned he would “name and shame” suppliers who were doing “nowhere near enough” for vulnerable customers.

There have been calls for a ban on the practice from charities including Citizens Advice.

Increasing numbers of people are being left without heat or light when they are unable to afford meter top-ups.

In a letter to energy suppliers, Mr Shapps said the move was “part of a drive to increase transparency around prepayment meter installations”.

Energy firms should first make greater efforts to help those struggling to pay their bills, such as offering credit or debt advice, Mr Shapps told them.

Head of energy policy for Citizens Advice, Gillian Cooper, welcomed the announcement, saying: “Millions of people are being left in cold, dark and damp homes because they can’t afford to top up their meter. No one should be forced to live like this.”

She said if suppliers did not co-operate, the government must step in with “stronger action”. She also called for “further protections” for those already using prepayment meters.

British Gas has already announced that it will stop switching people onto prepayment meters via their smart meters when they struggle to pay their bills.

Audrey Ridson, 81, was switched to one even though she could not walk to the shop to top up her energy card.

Audrey from Hampshire was in hospital recovering from a fall when her energy firm switched her to a prepayment account – even though her daughter-in-law warned her supplier that Audrey would struggle to get to the shops to make a payment to top up her meter.

But the government will stop short of an outright ban due to concerns over a subsequent increase in bailiff action.

Mr Shapps wrote: “Suppliers are clearly jumping the gun and moving at-risk customers on to prepayment meters before offering them the support they are entitled to.”

He wanted suppliers to “lend a more sympathetic ear” to those struggling amidst rising costs of living.

“I am deeply concerned to see reports of customers being switched to prepayment meters against their will, with some disconnected from supply – and quite literally left in the dark”, he added.
