Powerpuff Girls - “Twas the Fight Before Christmas”

Narrator: ‘Twas the City of Townsville, and all through the town

all the townsfolk are stirring, as snow is falling down

It's bitter and freezing in the dead of December,

But there's reason for joy, if you can remember.

For it's this time of year that our story unfolds,

When our hearts are the warmest, despite all the cold.

Yes, it is Christmas, just two days before,

And all through the town, none can wait anymore...

No doubt about it, this is a Christmas special. Not only is it snowing and freezing, the Narrator speaks entirely in rhyme. Fitting, as this plot is similar to a Dr. Seuss classic that took place during Christmas. Well, sort of.

The special starts two days before Christmas, as Townsville awaits that “one certain fat guy”. This is especially true for the kids at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten. Ah, Pokey Oaks. Not only does the Narrator say it, we see the sign right there.

Bubbles is singing Deck the Hells as she’s taping drawings of Santa on the bulletin board. Buttercup is gloating about her long Christmas list, the only readable word being “Gimme.” Got to love the subtle background jokes.

Not so subtle is a reference to the Red Ryder BB gun as made famous by A Christmas Story. This was long before A Christmas Story was mass-marketed to the point where they made an awful sequel to it more than a decade after the original. Hmm, sounds a bit familiar. No points for anyone who can guess the response to this, courtesy of Princess.

Parodying so many movie posters that it’s hard to tell which one its referencing, Princess comes up to the Powerpuff Girls to tell them that, since Daddy gives her everything she wants anyway, she only has one thing on her list: to be a Powerpuff Girl. Duh, she’s naughty, and the Powerpuff Girls even give a list that is essentially a best of for the people who aren’t familiar with her:

She bought the city and legalized crime! (Bought and Scold)

She hired Mojo Jojo and tried to destroy the Powerpuff Girls! (Mo Job)

She gave the Powerpuff Girls a bomb for their birthday! (Birthday Bash)

She teamed up with three felons and went on a crime spree! (Meet The Beat-Alls)

She tricked their friend Robin into stealing, and then tattled on her! (Super Friends)

I believe this is the only episode that actually mentions Robin outside of Super Friends, actually. I can understand why: new characters being added late in the show is a great way to jump the shark. Still, such super friends! As Blossom walks away, she tells Princess to change her ways, or else she's getting coal in her stocking. For the record, even in the original, a walking Powerpuff Girl looks awkward.

Princess completely scoffs at this idea that she’s spoiled and naughty, as she steps on Ms. Keane’s foot on her way out. She asks her driver if she’s naughty, and we get a whole skit. It could have been a short all to itself, it’s a classic.

The same scene happens with a servant and a nanny, and this episode’s biggest problem shows its head here. This special is 44 minutes long, four times the length of a normal Powerpuff Girls episode. Season 4′s problems with pacing in certain episodes due to their double-episode length are exacerbated here, as I feel a lot of scenes are here just to fill time. This is far from the worst example.

After opening her closet to get more pillows, as her maid quickly decided not to say anything and leave the room at her "naughty or nice question", only to be completely covered in a mountain of coal apparently stored from previous Christmases. She uses the coal to put lines under her eyes, and she puts on an all black outfit. Princess is planning something big, the Narrator fears in rhyme. But first, we got to take a detour.

Some people put up their decorations early, and some people put them up really late, and the Powerpuff Girls home is certainly in the latter, waiting until at least Christmas Eve Eve to finally put up all the decorations. Then again, when your kids can fly super fast, there’s no need to spend a whole day putting up everything.

Indeed, we see the Powerpuff Girls decorating in a super hero way, all in a race to see who gets to put the star on the top. Does this actually add to the plot? Not really, but it’s still a great scene to show off the more mundane ways the Powerpuff Girls use their powers. It is also a great way to have footage a promotional music video would use.

The Professor is here to make this not-so-generic tree lighting day special by lighting up the tree. Unfortunately, he has a bit of trouble with the lights, as we see for the next minute. I can see what they could have taken out if they wanted to condense this into a regular episode. A 22 minute episode, but still.

Professor Utonium: I can make three girls out of seasoning, but I can’t get these lights to work!

We get a small tour of Townsville awaiting for the next day, which is used for contrast with future scenes, but is mostly just filler. Highlights include a shot of a My Little Pony parody being awaited by the Mayor, doubly funny considering one of the credited writers of this special, and Mojo Jojo trying to hang an ornament on a metal tree.

Princess infiltrates Santa’s workshop in a way similar to a spy movie for the next three minutes. I will say, wearing all black was probably not a good idea in the bright and cheery Santa's workshop, but it works anyway. There's some creative imagery, being Santa's workshop and all, but I didn't remember too much about this scene. We're only waiting in suspense to learn the obvious that she couldn't realize.

She gets to Santa's private office, and is horrified to see the truth: all of the girls she hated are on the nice list, and she's on the naughty list. Actually, there's a lot more to it than that!

See, Princess was so naughty, that she’s the only person on the naughty list. He didn’t even need to make a list; he just has the naughty sticky note. She was just that bad; everyone else is nice by comparison; even Mojo Jojo is going to get something for Christmas. Remember that when you got presents even though you totally stole from the cookie jar: Princess sinned for your sins.

That, and it’s pretty convenient for Princess’s plot.

Using a magic pencil that can erase ink, she swaps the two headings. Hey, it is Santa Claus we're dealing with, he probably has an eraser with a blue part that actually does erase ink. Of course, Santa can’t possibly think that every person except for one kid was naughty, right?

At the Powerpuff home, we cut back to the Powerpuff Girls slowly going to sleep. Bubbles wakes up early because she heard sleigh bells, only to find the cookies not eaten, no presents, and a lump of coal in her stocking. Bubbles decides to investigate further.

Bubbles flies around every house in the residential area of Townsville, looking at other people’s presents with her x-ray vision. She goes to one house, she goes to another house, and then another, and another, and another, and so on. Remember when I said "worst example"? I didn’t get out of my seat and yelled "okay, I get it already!" I only thought it loudly. Honest.

At least there’s some payoff to this, as Blossom and Buttercup tell Bubbles that she must have gotten coal because she looked through other people’s presents. Buttercup tells her this again later on, leading to this great reaction from Bubbles. It’s just the way it’s animated; there’s no need for No Me Gusta. Well, there's a quarter for the "reboot jabs in original reviews" jar.

Rewinding a little bit, once they see that they got coal in their stockings, too, Blossom and Buttercup realize something is terribly wrong, too.

The Powerpuff Girls, after changing into their normal outfits off-screen, yeah, that’s it, go up the chimney to find Princess. Princess is flying, and it’s not because they didn’t know she couldn’t. Since Princess is the only nice girl in the entire world, Santa decided to give her what she always wanted, and give everyone else coal.

She threatens to fly all the way to Santa Claus to tell him that those three jealous girls that always denied her is now going to destroy Santa’s workshop in retaliation for their much deserved coal. Why would he believe her? Because she’s the only nice child in the entire world, silly! As she starts flying off, the Powerpuff Girls chase after after her.

There are boring ways to fill time, and there are good ways to fill time, and while the driver scene is close, there is no better way to fill time in the Powerpuff Girls than with an action sequence. They must have known this, too; almost an episode’s worth of time is spent with them racing towards the North Pole, them fighting, pulling each other’s hair, and much, much more.

There are so many highlights I can bring out of this, but I got to leave something out of the review or I'll be here forever. I should highlight one scene in particular, though: Blossom has ice breath, Bubbles has the ability to talk to animals, Buttercup can roll her tongue, what does Princess have?

Crown-controlled telekinesis! Well, Bliss isn’t so special, is she? Alright, fine, enough with the reboot jabs; I'm running out of quarters to put in the jar. As she throws this giant ice ball, she ends up splitting this ball into three, shaping it into her face. A neat touch.

Princess: Cool it, girls!

Even Princess is good at the one-liners.

In a speed more rapid than eagles, 8 minutes to get to the North Pole from somewhere in the US is rather impressive, they finally arrive at the North Pole. Yes, I timed it. They destroy everything in sight thanks to a hair tug caused fight. Princess ended up being right about the Powerpuff Girls destroying the workshop, as said earlier, though it was all her fault.

We get to see ol' jolly Saint Nick himself, except he isn’t so jolly. He's sad that every kid in the entire world is bad except for one kid. Maybe he shouldn't have skipped over the whole "he sees you when you're sleeping" part in the beginning. Considering how Bubbles is demonized for doing so earlier in the episode, maybe they didn't want to point out the hypocrisy.

How did they get Santa to believe that Princess is wrong, and they are right? Simple: all Santa needed to hear was that they were the Powerpuff Girls. Knowing who they are, but not knowing what they looked like; what kind of Santa are you? He's still cool.

Then again, Princess calling him "Santa Clod" probably helped with his next decision.

Santa realizes that, no, he doesn’t have to follow a list to know who's naughty or nice when it's clear to him. He tears the sticky note up. Who's to think that the only person that learns a lesson in this special is Santa? I can't even think of a time where that has ever happened before.

Well, there is one list that he will follow: the crew vanity Permanent Naughty List, as Santa noses Princess’s name on it. Maybe I should explain that: when he pokes his red nose, Christmas magic happens. I feel sorry for poor Bill and Ryan; Santa taught of them before thinking of that next guy.

Santa: Bum bum bum!

No, really, he says “bum bum bum” as the camera zooms into this face when he does this. Even with his utter lapse of judgment, I can still say this is one of my favorite portrayals of Santa Claus.

Another "bum bum bum" is that it's just too late; he's already done his journey. The fact that the workshop is in ruins doesn't help at all, but he doesn't hold it against the Powerpuff Girls. If only there were someone that can fly super fast.

The Powerpuff Girls become Santa for a year, saving Christmas like all those characters in the 80's. We don't see them go all around the world, just through Townsville's residential area. We can just assume the rest of the whole world didn't wake up to coal in their stocking, as the Narrator does.

We almost end on a joke with the Professor trying to wake the girls, but they're too tired having to do Santa's job in an inkling of the time it took Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, and et cetera. It could have ended with that, but that wouldn't have been as cheerful for a Christmas special, so they wake up and celebrate Christmas after all.

The Narrator ends the show like how every Powerpuff Girls episode ends, in a more rhymey and Christmassy way. Just wanted to highlight that because I miss it so much. Maybe I should make some plans for the new year.

Does it still hold up?

Minus a few scenes that lasted a bit too long, it’s a great special from start to finish with lots of actions and some creative humor. There’s not a lot of Christmas specials that can claim that, especially the former.

Finland first captured our hearts when we visited Santa Claus Holiday Village back in the winter of 2016. Since then we’ve longed to return to this beautiful wintry wonderland to see more of Finnish Lapland’s natural beauty. In winter the lakes freeze and pine trees bend and sag under the load of heavy snow. Just as we fell in love with Italy a few years ago, we are now falling for Finland. So, why did we choose A Cosy Cottage by the River for our first holiday of 2019? After a couple of days in Ruka for the girls to ski, and for a few excursions with Rukapalvelu Safarihouse; we simply wanted a secluded cottage in a quiet location to chill out and take time to ourselves. And A Cosy Cottage by the River is exactly that…secluded and quiet!

The early bird catches the sunrise

LOCATION – A Cosy Cottage by the River

Built in 1987 this riverside property had a full refurbishment in 2015 and it has been catapulted into the 21st century. As with all Finnish homes, you’ll find lots of wood, primarily pine and lark. A Cosy Cottage by the River is exactly as described; it’s cosy, it’s a cottage and it’s just 20 metres from the River Raudanjoki. In a great location with spectacular views, 20 seems to be the magic number.

Ounasvaara Ski Resort – 20 km (20 mins drive)

Rovaniemi Town Centre – 20 km (20 mins drive)

Petrol station, supermarket and takeaway (kebabs, pizzas, burgers) – 17 km (17 mins drive)

As the location is isolated, a car is required to get to the cottage. There’s no public transport to the property (nearest bust stop 2 km away).

Santa Claus Holiday Village in Rovaniemi

ARRIVAL, CHECK IN AND CHECK OUT

Check in at A Cosy Cottage by the River is from 16:00, check out is before 12:00 (noon). Turning off the main road onto a very long lane which is shadowed by pine trees. Outside the accommodation we were warmly greeted by our host Samuli and his beautiful (and well trained) Scottish Setter dogs. Samuli introduced himself and then gave us a full rundown of entering the property (locks, keypad). Once inside, a guided tour of the property and an explanation of the working of the tv, chromecast, wifi password etc…very thorough and detailed. Lily-Belle and Matilda were very disappointed as they hoped the pups would be allowed to stay!

PROPERTY

Porch

A small porch with hanging space for coats, plus a tall heater-dryer. Plenty of space for shoes (shoes must not be worn in the house).

Dining Room

Open plan lounge-diner. A glass topped dining table and 6 chairs in the dining area. Lamps and candle holders create the mood lighting.

Lounge

In the lounge a comfy sofa, chair and pouffe, and a glass fronted fire. In the corner a small heater and a rocking chair with warm throws. Tech: TV, DVD, CD, Chromecast and WiFi throughout.

Kitchen

Just off from the lounge is the small but adequately fitted kitchen. Of course there’s the usual kitchen utensils and appliances such as a microwave, fridge-freezer, toaster, coffee machine etc. We were on our holidays so didn’t frequent this area too much (if you get what I mean…takeaways).

Bedroom 1

Large double bed with bedside cabinets and lamps. Large wardrobe with plenty of coat hangers and hanging space.

Bedroom 2

A little smaller than bedroom 1. Double bed with a chair and bedside lamps, hanging rail but no wardrobe.

Bathroom

As you’d expect; a toilet with a wash hand basin. There’s also a washing machine with cleaning products stored (mop, brush etc).

Shower

Shower room (almost like a wet room) with a door which leads directly to the rear of the property which is where the hot tub is located.

Sauna

As with a lot of Finnish properties, a fantastic indoor sauna (electric).

Upstairs

Sleeping Loft area with small sleeping room (mattress on the floor?) and sofas that we assume pulled out into beds. Low pitched ceilings so be careful not to crack your head. Daddy found out the hard way!

OUTSIDE

Hot tub (a firm favourite with The Callaghan Posse), bbq hut, sauna hut, a large decked area and a very well-stocked woodshed. Great in Winter but I’d imagine this property would come into its own in the Spring, Summer and Autumn with romantic riverside walks and treks through the forests. But for us, winter wins every time!

THINGS TO DO

As well as exploring the lovely pine forests or roaming the snow-covered land, there’s plenty to keep little ones occupied. At the property there’s plastic sleds and fantastic kick sleds to avail of in the winter. Lily-Belle and Matilda had hours of fun going up and down the long lane on them. In winter the frozen river makes a great playground and is the perfect vantage point for Seeing the Northern Lights. Of course there’s the superb hot tub for those wishing to relax and admire the frozen landscape. The hot tub was relatively quick to fill (60-90 minutes), and took a little over 5 hours to heat (it’s winter and it’s -28°C). There’s also board games and books. As our stay was only for 2 nights we didn’t use the indoor/outdoor sauna or the bbq hut…but we will next time!

FULL OF CHARACTER AND CHARM

Although the property is only 67 m2, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in ‘character and charm’. Floors throughout are all wooden (painted) for ease of cleaning. All in all the property is surprisingly spacious, spotlessly clean and more than adequate for 6 people…fresh, modern and very homely. It’s seriously very difficult not to fall in love with A Cosy Cottage by the River. And the sunsets and sunrises are out of this world!

LILY-BELLE SAYS (10) The cottage was really modern and beautiful and located right beside a frozen river. The hot tub took quite long to heat up but was definitely worth the wait. The plastic sleds and kick-sleds were so much fun and I really enjoyed using them. I would definitively return to this cottage.

MATILDA SAYS (4) The snow was really deep and I had lots of fun on the kick-sleds with Lily-Belle. We saw the Northern Lights which was really good. The hot tub was too hot so Daddy put in snow to cool it down which was funny.

How to read

While these posts tend to include a lot of Youtube videos, it's important to consume broadly, and unfortunately that may mean having to read some books. Fortunately, one of my favorite channels, Philosophy Tube has a video on how to read difficult books.

One of his main points is to give yourself permission to take breaks and even re-read passages or chapters if you need to. Secondly, reading two different kinds of books can also be beneficial, as well as speeding up your completion rate.

I'd also like to add that while some books may take some time to "get going," we should all give ourselves permissions to stop reading a bad book if we really don't like it. This also goes for any other media. If you really don't like something and it's bringing you no joy or intellectual sustenance, turn it off. Even if everyone else loves it. Your time is worth more than that.

Patreon doesn't pay enough, (The Outline)

If you listen to enough podcasts, you'll probably hear a couple ads for Patreon. It's a "crowdfunding site" only instead of paying towards the completion of a specific goal, you directly support an ongoing creative endeavor.

For the ones at the top (for example Chapo Trap House pulls in over $80,000 a month), this has been a great way to monetize their work. But for the vast majority of patreon users, it hasn't allowed them to quit their day jobs. Brent Knepper at The Outline breaks down exactly why that is, and what Patreon doesn't do to help creators.

It is interesting to see how Patreon has been able to insert itself in the middle of all of these transactions, while apparently adding very little in the way of value, and a lot of extra work, to creators' plates.

Christmas time means Christmas movies

I haven't been able to get the movie One Magic Christmas out of my head ever since I saw it back in the early 90s on The Disney Channel. I don't know why exactly, it is, in many respects not all that memorable.

The thing that stands out most to me is that it was the first Christmas movie I saw where Santa Claus doesn't really play a big roll. Yes, he's a big feature of the children's Christmas experience but much of the magic in the film comes from plainclothes angel Gideon (played by Harry Dean Stanton.)

Why are computers beige?

Just a random video I stumbled upon. Pretty much all 1980s/90s computers were a rather terrible beige color. They may have a dark-gray accent color here or there, but overall the beige box was ubiquitous in offices of the time

As it turns out, the reason that beige was the rage had to do with a German workplace regulation from the 1970s. This standard was eventually adopted by other countries throughout Europe to the point where it made very little sense to make any other color options besides beige.

While Apple gets a lot of credit for shifting the aesthetic of home computers, the black IBM Thinkpad was a major force in changing office hardware.

Daytime talk show surprises La Mesa family with gifts

A recent episode of the talk show, “The Real,” featured a local La Mesa family. For readers who aren’t familiar with BET’s Daytime Emmy Award-nominated series, the program stars four female hosts.

Adrienne Houghton, Loni Love, Jeannie Mai and Tamera Mowry-Housley spend time discussing topical issues, sharing personal stories and interviewing an eclectic selection of celebrities. Not long ago, they shed light on a story involving a mother from San Diego County.

Tai Harris is a single mom living with her two children, Mark and Marlene. Before she was featured, Harris was a devoted viewer of the talk show. “I am a real big fan of ‘The Real,’” she said. “I love the important subjects they talk about. My favorite segment is ‘Girl Chat.’”

The matriarch works at a KinderCare facility full time to provide for her kids. Owing to money problems, including high expenses for child care, the three of them moved in with Tai Harris’ mom and sister. In spite of hardships, Harris really enjoys living in La Mesa. “What I love best about living in La Mesa is that there are a lot of family events going on,” she said. “It seems there is always something to do on the weekend.”

Unfortunately, all of Harris’ hard work didn’t pay enough money for her to provide presents for Christmas. After inviting the family to share their story on television (their segment can be viewed on “The Real Daytime” YouTube channel), the hosts and Santa Claus surprised the children. with gifts and $1,000 for mom Some of the goodies included toys, necklaces, earrings and an iHome speaker.

Being on “The Real” was a wonderful experience for Harris, especially when she talked to Mowry-Housley. “I cried when I met her,” Harris said. “She is the sweetest person and is so genuine. I was blessed to sit next to her during the taping.”

In spite of leaving a positive impact, Harris doesn’t have any major small screen appearances planned for the very near future. “My family and I are not scheduled to be on TV anytime soon, but my son loved seeing himself on ‘The Real,’” she said. “He wants to be on TV again.”

Even though Harris was given plenty of Noel gifts, her yuletide celebration will likely be a simple one. “The only plans I have is to spend it with my family and thank God for allowing all of us to see another Christmas,” she said.

Harris remains to be humble sharing her experiences on live TV. “I truly appreciate everyone that made it possible for me and my family to be on the show,” she said. “My family and I were truly blessed.”

Harris and her kids now have everything they need to celebrate a wonderful Christmas. With any luck, “The Real” will be able to aid families going through similar hardships very soon.

DuckTales 2017 - “The Impossible Summit of Mt. Neverrest!”

I've seen the top of the mountain, and it is good.

The episode starts with some exposition on the titular Mount Neverrest Summit. Like the real life mountain it is partially named after, it’s the highest peak in the world. It has claimed many explorers' lives, but Scrooge McDuck is about to take it on alongside his nephews, Webby, and Launchpad. No Donald or Mrs. Beakley; seems like it's been a while since we've seen the latter.

Louie isn't too thrilled, because he wants to be back at the mansion waiting for Santa Claus, because it's Christmas. Scrooge reveals that he doesn’t want that jolly old elf inside his home because of "what he did". That’s pretty much it for the Christmas special portion of this episode. That's the end of the Christmas portion of the episode, unless just having snow counts.

The one very interesting change that 2017 did was give the nephews their own personalities, so it makes sense to have episodes focused on each one. While Dewey and Louie have had an episode or two, this is the first episode that really focuses on Huey. That Terra-Firmians episode was the closest before this, but that was more Webby than Huey.

While Scrooge McDuck wants to climb the summit to its highest point, Huey wants to draw a picture of it! Specifically, he wants to earn his Junior Woodchuck Cartography Badge by drawing a map of the uncharted mountain. He then shows off this badge that he has apparently yet to earn. It's not the only inconsistency, either, as Huey explains from his encyclopedic knowledge of the mountain.

Huey: The mountain summit has been shrouded in mystery! Nobody has ever seen the top!

Except for that guy who managed to photograph it for that exposition book, apparently. What he actually means is that nobody has ever been to the top to see what landmarks are on it. After “landing” in the usual Launchpad way, they see the majesty of the highest peak they can land on. Scrooge McDuck is glad to show the majesty of this peak, with no people at all!

Well, except for this tourist trap, which I guess was put up recently enough for him to be surprised to see. Scrooge does seem like the kind of duck who would only get his info from old books. Even Huey, who tried to bring modern technology with him only to be shut down by Scrooge, is taken aback either; he's been told that it's all uncharted territory. This town doesn't have much in the way of advertisement.

He even finds maps of the mountain, but it only shows a map of the resort along with some creative liberties. He points out to a very disinterested Louie that mountain goats are not native to this region, and even the decorative sun is not beyond his criticism. Sounds like a certain bowed individual. Not sure which one.

Huey: ...and why is the sun wearing sunglasses? Is he looking at a brighter sun?

He really likes to nitpick minor things throughout this episode; he'd do well writing for Fly Pow Bye. He takes his map so he can mark a real map in red marker. Scrooge shows up to tell him to ignore all of this tourism, as they're real explorers. Huey, with his knowledge, brings up one of the explorers: the late, great George Mallardy.

To make a long story short, George Mallardy set the record on the highest climb on this summit 75 years ago until his persumed death, and he became a legend around the resort for it. He's shown here carrying a quitter known as the Neverrest Ninny. Scrooge completely scoffs at this legend, only calling it a gimmick to sell t-shirts...and then right after saying that Mallardy's record will be beaten. He continues to talk as if this supposedly fictional event actually happened to the point where Huey asks him why, because, in his words:

Scrooge: Just because it’s a myth doesn’t mean it’s not true!

Considering the Terra-Firmians and all of those amazing things in Scrooge's garage, Scrooge has a point here. At least, when it comes to this series. There's obviously a much different reason.

What are the other ducks to do besides follow Scrooge around? They do find roles for them, in two different subplots. The first involves Webby wanting to go sledding. She buys a sled, goes down about two feet before stopping, and immediately crosses it off her list. Dewey tells her not to give up until she reaches the "maximum opportune moment", and he gives Webby the idea to sled off the top of Mount Neverrest.

Throughout the episode, Webby tries to get on her sled, only for Dewey to stop her. This even comes to Webby trying to, only for Dewey to kick the sled away so Webby can hand right on her face. It becomes a running gag, and like most good running gags, it has a payoff.

We also get a plot with Launchpad and "Ice Fever". Easily seeing Launchpad as someone who isn't too bright, a peddler gives Launchpad a spiel about Ice Fever, and that he should buy a bunch of expensive items in order to prevent it.

With Launchpad bringing half of the equipment, including his new very expensive anti-Ice Fever equipment he's not-really quick to clarify he bought with Scrooge's credit card, they’re all ready to set foot past the gate between the tourist trap and “certain death”. One would think this would be roped off or have some sort of protection against people dying, but that would hinder the plot.

Not everyone gets to join in. Louie immediately goes off to have hot cocoa the second he's told there's no treasure involved, something fitting with his character. As for Launchpad, a combination of a too high backpack, a too low passageway, and elastic straps causes him to be flung back into the summit resort so he can participate in wacky Ice Fever antics.

Huey gets to do his part, naming notable areas along the way, such as “Murder Bridge” and the “Chasm of Despair”. Something tells me we missed some more danger between commercial breaks.

Huey: And I’ll call this one Bunny Rock!

(The snow around said rock falls.)

Huey: Hmm...I’m still going to call it Bunny Rock.

One of the gags is that they keep coming across this rock even if they seemingly “gain a lot of altitude.” At least, it seems like a running gag at first. Good running gags tend to have a payoff, and this is no exception, but the payoff leads to the actual twist of the episode.

While Scrooge and the kids are climbing the mountain, Launchpad is bumbling around the sauna, thinking he's still on the summit. His goggles fog up, and he assumes that it’s the Ice Fever setting in. It's sort of a retread of the mole people joke from Terra-Firmians, right down to Launchpad confusing a regular person for a monster.

Back at the mountain, they stop at a huge cliff. It ends up with Scrooge climbing the mountain holding onto a rope carrying the rest of the kids in a slightly familiar way. Scrooge continues to say that they only need wits, so they have to drop most of their supplies. Huey questions his uncle's actions thanks to his knowledge of the book, hinting at what is to come between them in this episode.

Lost, they go into a cave, armed with only various forms of lighting, that Scrooge happened to know about...even though this mountain is uncharted. What seems to be the writers pointing out their own flaws in the plot is actually a hint of one of the other twists that will be revealed in a minute. It’s also hinted with that myth line, but, as said before, that line could apply to this whole show.

They see markings, presumably made by explorers that didn’t make it, showing them a bunch of explorers without their heads. They outright show the main twist of the episode here, but the correct way to interpret this image may be missed. Of course, that's not the only discovery in this cave.

The skeleton of Geroge Mallardy, complete with a “I didn’t survive Mount Neverrest“ shirt. Unless they were selling shirts back then, which would contradict something slightly later, the only way this could have happened is that someone managed to get up to this point, went up to a dead body, and put that shirt on him. Curse you, McDuck!

Scrooge tries his best to cover for himself by saying that he's a household name for cursing, but we get our first twist of the episode: he was still an adult making at least a million 75 years ago. Oh, and he happened to be the Neverrest Ninny. I'm sure one of those is more important.

We get to see more of Scrooge McDuck’s past, specifically, the time when he made his first million. To mark the occasion, he decided to hire George Mallardy to go on top of the mountain. This eventually leads to Mallardy doing the folklore causing climbing the rope. After Scrooge didn't want to get rid of his gear, and sizeable money belt, he cuts the rope, causing the Ninny to fall down. He survives, because he's Scrooge McDuck.

One may notice the similarity between this and the earlier scene a few paragraphs ago. This does not go unnoticed. Scrooge does become sort of the bad guy in this episode, though he has a believable motivation.

While pretty much everyone seems to have a role in this episode, the main conflict is between Huey and Scrooge. It builds up during most of the episode. Shouting at each other, probably not a good idea in a heavily snowy area high in the sky.

The main twist of the mountain is accidently discovered by Dewey and Webby, who are still trying to find the best spot to start their sledding. It explains all of the weird location things going on. Let's just say: Aperture Science may have some explaining to do. I already gave away one twist, I might as well keep the other slightly obscure.

The Scrooge and Huey plot. It's all build up for a pretty good action scene, where the villain is actually the odd environment that surrounds them. It's an interesting idea that hasn't been done in the reboot until this episode. It should be no surprise that the sledding subplot has a neat payoff as well. This is all cut up with that wacky "Ice Fever" plot with Louie and Launchpad, and I could at least say it ends well, too.

I don't want to spoil anything more, but it's not a spoiler to say that they all live, right? I mean, there's a Della Duck mystery to solve. I did see one part of the very final shot a mile away, though it's still a very satisfying image. Whether anyone will find out in-universe...may never be said.

How does it stack up?

Sometimes I feel like I'm coming across as saying that modern day cartoons need to have ongoing plots, especially when I'm talking about continuity. Like The House of Lucky Gander, this is an episode that's its own story, and it's a good one. and even some building of Scrooge's past.

DuckTales 2017 is going back on hiatus alongside every other cartoon for Generic Tree Lighting Day, so who knows what’s next. In fact, there’s no new episodes of DT 2017 in January, either. Will we ever find out what Santa Claus did?
