Science fiction has long described sophisticated technology that can temporarily put humans into a suspended state, permitting characters to awaken far into the future, often after extended journeys through space. In reality, the basis for suspended animation could potentially rely on a far simpler technology—one used routinely in clinics for decades. Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis have used ultrasound to nudge rodents into an energy-conserving state that mirrors a natural, hibernation-like survival mechanism known as torpor. In a new study published in Nature Metabolism, the team was able to lower the body temperature and metabolic rate of mice, and attain some of the same results in rats, which, like humans, do not naturally undergo torpor. While the technique may not be ready for interstellar travel just yet, it could be useful on a shorter horizon if it proves effective in humans, helping buy precious time for patients in critical care.

Ever notice the grizzlies move a little slower in the winter?

The grizzly bears have been in torpor, which is a survival tactic similar to hibernation, but not the same. Think of torpor as hibernation *lite*. When bears are in torpor, everything slows down: their heartbeat, breathing, metabolism, and body temperature. They eat less, sleep more, and take time to relax. Even in their state of sleepiness though, they can still get up to enjoy some tasty snacks.

Torpor! A relatively freshly born entity that doesn't have the constitution to maintain a presence in the physical world. Its main goal is to get a foothold into the world to experience what it's like to be a living being, but to do so requires a host body to latch onto that doesn't have the will to fight it off. It stalks potential hosts from across planes, and splits itself into two smaller entities (No ref sheet for them atm) when attempting to make contact and manipulate its prey. It Is Not Good At Possessing People Yet.

October Sleepy Bee.

I found this little one on a walk way on a brick. It was still and slow. Picked it up with a leaf and placed it on an aster. Little buddy did not disappoint. Immediately started to forage. There are fewer blooms now, but the asters are still hanging in there.

Did my usual "start January full of vim and vigour only to run out of steam after a week and scurry back into hibernation" thing.

Started the #NeurodivergentNewYear prompts with every intention of seeing it through but instead I am just sore and tired and flat and I'm going to take the pressure off and maybe do some of the prompts once the January Slump is over instead.

Many don't really know how to answer this question, Torpor has extremely varied impressions across the Dissing order. Obviously it's hard to get to know someone who's not present vast majority of the time. Setä is quite terrified of her, mostly due to the first time he was present for Torpor's activation, which got.. Messy. He doesn't express this fear outright, since Hysteria greatly cares for Torpor. They're close. Mamonde also used to be as close to it but after certain events she prefers to keep her distance, as Torpor's presence reminds her of her youth, which she doesn't wanna think too hard about. Unjust mostly admires Torpor but also just sees it as a tool, a spectacle of greatness and power. Temperance and Janice have a vaguely positive impression of Torpor but both pity her alot, though Temperance is more lowkey about it. Avarice has alot of respect for Torpor but fear as well, not for any disliking but simply due to being a wimp. Though thyr extremely grateful to it, and forever will be, subconsciously thy views her as some means to an end, sort of like Unjust. Thou doesn't mean any bad by it but has a hard time considering the person that Torpor actually is. Most of the younger or newer/more detached members are either indifferent or sort of mystically curious about Torpor.

Her creations don't consider themselves relatives amongst each other, Hysteria and Mamonde are only sisters since they were born simultaneously, during the same event.

Torpor by her nature is a rather maternal person, if not in the motherly way, at least in the way that she wants to help everyone. She can easily just be way too kind and lenient. Simultaneously it's extremely responsible and thinks about everything very hard and thoroughly, but it's combated by the fact that as Fervor she becomes airheaded and a jolly goof. You'd be too, if you only ever got to move and do stuff every 10yrs. As Fervor, it's emotions also can heighten easily, and while it's not used to expressing them (or graceful about doing so), it's actions can easily be interpreted as emotion driven. She means well, and only loses sight of that if she gets carried away in messing around. Despite knowing in painful detail about how direly she impacts everything around her, it's a struggle to act accordingly. There's a desperate desire to not need to take everything so seriously all the time, but a resigned melancholy in knowing she has to.

Torpor is a person of many contradictions. She has childlike wonder about the world and beings around her, but a wistful image that it really isn't as wonderful as it should be, and making things better is a snail's crawl. She has iron willed determination to keep going and trying no matter what, while simultaneously feeling like it'll never amount to anything. Her life is a struggle and if she had an easy out, a way to make it all simpler for herself, she's extremely torn on whether she'd want to take it or work for a "true" solution to life's problems. All in all, she's very curious, wise, overly caring, patient, rash and miraculously optimistic despite her nihilism.
