Derad Network: The Crypto Project That's Taking Aviation to New Heights https://www.derad.net/
Hey Tumblr fam, let's talk about something wild: a blockchain project that's not just about making money, but about making the skies safer. Meet Derad Network, a Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) that's using crypto magic to revolutionize how we track planes. If you're into tech, aviation, or just love seeing Web3 do cool stuff in the real world, this one's for you. Buckle up-here's the scoop.
What's Derad Network?
Picture this: every plane in the sky is constantly beaming out its location, speed, and altitude via something called ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast). It's like GPS for aircraft, way sharper than old-school radar. But here's the catch-those signals need ground stations to catch them, and there aren't enough out there, especially in remote spots like mountains or over the ocean. That's where Derad Network swoops in.
Instead of waiting for some big corporation or government to build more stations, Derad says,"Why not let anyone do it?" They've built a decentralized network where regular people-you, me, your neighbor with a Raspberry Pi-can host ADS-B stations or process flight data and get paid in DRD tokens. It's a community-powered vibe that fills the gaps in flight tracking, making flying safer and giving us all a piece of the action. Oh, and it's all locked down with blockchain, so the data's legit and tamper-proof. Cool, right?
How It Actually Works
Derad's setup is super approachable, which is why I'm obsessed. There are two ways to jump in:
Ground Stations: Got a corner of your room and a decent Wi-Fi signal? You can set up an ADS-B ground station with some affordable gear-like a software-defined radio (SDR) antenna and a little computer setup. These stations grab signals from planes flying overhead, collecting stuff like "this Boeing 737 is at 30,000 feet going 500 mph." You send that data to the network and boom, DRD tokens hit your wallet. It's like mining crypto, but instead of solving math puzzles, you're helping pilots stay safe.
Data Nodes: Not into hardware? You can still play. Run a data processing node on your laptop or whatever spare device you've got lying around. These nodes take the raw info from ground stations, clean it up, and make it useful for whoever needs it-like airlines or air traffic nerds. You get DRD for that too. It's a chill way to join without needing to turn your place into a tech lab.
All this data flows into a blockchain (Layer 1, for the tech heads), keeping it secure and transparent. Derad's even eyeing permanent storage with Arweave, so nothing gets lost. Then, companies or regulators can buy that data with DRD through a marketplace. It's a whole ecosystem where we're the backbone, and I'm here for it.
DRD Tokens: Crypto with a Purpose
The DRD token is the star of the show. You earn it by hosting a station or running a node, and businesses use it to grab the flight data they need. It's not just some random coin to trade—it's got real juice because it's tied to a legit use case. The more people join, the more data flows, and the more DRD gets moving. It's crypto with a mission, and that's the kind of energy I vibe with.
Why This Matters (Especially forAviation Geeks)
Okay, let's get real-flying's already pretty safe, but it's not perfect. Radar's great, but it's blind in tons of places, like over the Pacific or in the middle of nowhere. ADS-B fixes that, but only if there are enough stations to catch the signals.Derad's like, "Let's crowdsource this." Here's why it's a game-changer:
Safer Skies: More stations = better tracking. That means fewer chances of planes bumping into each other (yikes) and faster help if something goes wrong.
Cheaper Than Big Tech: Building centralized stations costs a fortune. Derad's DIY approach saves cash and spreads the love to smaller players like regional airlines or even drone companies.
Regulators Love It: Blockchain makes everything transparent. Airspace rules getting broken? It's logged forever, no shady cover-ups.
Regulators Love It: Blockchain makes everything transparent. Airspace rules getting broken? It's logged forever, no shady cover-ups.
Logistics Glow-Up: Airlines can plan better routes, save fuel, and track packages like champs, all thanks to this decentralized data stash.
And get this-they're not stopping at planes.Derad's teasing plans to tackle maritime tracking with AlS (think ships instead of wings). This could be huge.
Where It's Headed
Derad's still in its early ascent, but the flight plan's stacked. They're aiming for 10,000 ground stations worldwide (imagine the coverage!), launching cheap antenna kits to get more people in, and dropping "Ground Station as a Service" (GSS) so even newbies can join. The Mainnet XL launch is coming to crank up the scale, and they're teaming up with SDR makers and Layer 2 blockchains to keep it smooth and speedy.
The wildest part? They want a full-on marketplace for radio signals-not just planes, but all kinds of real-time data. It's ambitious as hell, and I'm rooting for it.
Why Tumblr Should Stan Derad
This isn't just for crypto bros or plane spotters-it's for anyone who loves seeing tech solve real problems. Derad's got that DIY spirit Tumblr thrives on: take something niche (flight data), flip it into a community project, and make it matter. The DRD token's got legs because it's useful, not just a gamble. It's like catching a band before they blow up.
The Rough Patches
No flight's turbulence-free. Aviation's got rules out the wazoo, and regulators might side-eye a decentralized setup. Scaling to thousands of stations needs hardware and hype, which isn't instant. Other DePIN projects or big aviation players could try to muscle in too. But Derad's got a unique angle-community power and a solid mission—so I'm betting it'll hold its own.
Final Boarding Call
Derad Network's the kind of project that gets me hyped. It's crypto with soul, turning us into the heroes who keep planes safe while sticking it to centralized gatekeepers. Whether you're a tech geek, a crypto stan, or just someone who loves a good underdog story, this is worth watching.
Derad's taking off, and I'm strapped in for the ride. What about you?

I think I wanna make my own website for funsies >:3 Been seein a lotta recommendations for neocities and readymag! ... Tho it requires coding .... WELP guess thatll be on my bucket list for this year! I was gon learn how to code anyways cuz game development has been on my mind recently, but knowing me - it'll take a while to even grasp how to type on all fingers. I just cant seem to grasp it how yall do this?! —
That, and learning 3d modeling, and alsooo character design, and also reworking my commission services – Cant forget that I gotta focus on animations this summer too since that's what Im taking for college :")
Sigh the perks of being easily interested in everything .... anyways heres some artdump! Im learning to draw on krita cuz my back CANNOT handle drawing on a phone anymore ( P.S I hate the fact Ibispaint SUCKS ASS on pc, like cmon! I aint paying for a software that got busted UIs, but I am happy that I discovered krita bcuz of it )
So happy that I finally got a pc after saving for years!! ͙͘͡★ Im also thinkinggg of joining artfight! I dont know shi about it at first but like turns out its genuinely just a "trade on trade art of ocs" competition?? AND I LOVE IT, I always wanted to share my ocs and have people draw them! Plus I get to draw other people's cool ocs too!
Hopefully I can make all the ref just in time for July, however I AM struggling with the fact that Im too excited for it all (´д`|||) Im busting out new characters and even sona designs rather than finishing my current oc refs. I haven't even finish my profile on artfight yet cuz I wanna make it look cool for any first impressions.
My current fixation is sonic, so Im making a sonic sona! Cant figure out what specific animal am I, but Im thinking of making it as some kinda weird hybrid. Bcuz Im stubborn! and just wanna let my pen flow! So first was a dog, and then a dilophosaurus, then a ribbon eel, then a robot fish but right noww; the drawinggg I got is sorta givinggg = " Frilled lizard with super fluffy fur thats got rat-pigtails, and a robotic armored forehead aswell as a robotic torso and fish-tail that resembles the theme of a ribbon eel " I got all of that from a headshot doodle mhm mhm

Do you still recall the excitement you felt when you opened your first smartphone or gaming setup? Fast-forward to the present day and revolutionary gadgets struggle to keep pace with your notifications, let alone run the most recent development tools or triple-A games.  Naturally, many of us who are passionate about technology frequently find ourselves in this situation: deciding whether to continue using our reliable old devices or embrace new technology. Now, if you are straddling the fence over this digital dilemma, let us see why embracing the latest might be the change your tech life needs. The Upgrade Dilemma Your trusty old gadget has accompanied you through countless late-night coding sessions, lengthy gaming marathons, and late-night troubleshooting. It was your unwavering support system throughout difficult endeavors and an enthusiastic participant in your moments of success. But, while nostalgia is tremendous, it won't make your gadget go faster or those game graphics any smoother. Before you dismiss the notion of upgrading, consider this: you may be sitting on a goldmine. Only some people realize that selling their old devices can offset new tech. Consider selling your iPhone online or trading in other gadgets. In any case, it is a win-win proposition—a decluttered space and a padded upgrade budget. Advantage 1: Improved Performance Now, consider speed. Do you remember when you could compile a project in about the same amount of time it would take to get a cup of coffee? Well, this hardware update bids adieu to such long hours of waiting. New processors won't come with incremental performance improvements but exponential ones. Imagine running several VMs at the same time, compiling complex projects, and having enough juice to stream your favorite tech podcast without system sweats. For gamers, this means much smoother framerates, faster load times, and higher resolutions, with the ability to crank up those graphics settings without fear. Whether debugging some stubborn piece of code or clutching that last-second win, every millisecond matters. Advantage 2: Improved Security Features In this hyper-wired world, security isn't just a feature; it is a necessity. Newer devices come armed with state-of-the-art security measures that render your password protection of yesteryears look like a rusty padlock. The encryption is so advanced that it can make even the most determined hackers break out in a sweat, and the biometric authentication reads your fingerprint quicker than you can utter "sudo." For the developers, that is tamping up the security of their precious source code or client data. This means all your hard-won achievements and purchases in-game are safe. With digital dangers constantly shifting, proactive security measures are more important than ever. Advantage 3: Runs New Software Have you ever tried to run the latest IDE on an ancient machine? The effort proves both exasperating and ultimately pointless. New gadgets open doors to the latest software ecosystems. Developers gain entry to cutting-edge programming resources and code repositories, supercharging their efficiency.  Think of bringing the full power of machine learning libraries into action or doing AR development without your device gasping for air. To gamers, this means running the most demanding titles at the highest possible settings so you can experience virtual worlds precisely as their creators truly envisioned. Keep weak hardware from getting in the way of your digital adventures. Advantage 4: Better Energy Efficiency Remember those days when you sealed the deal for an upgrade by looking at your skyrocketing electricity bill? Today's devices are engineering marvels of energy efficiency. They sip on power like a connoisseur sips fine wine – savoring every drop for maximum performance. This translates to more battery life in your mobile devices and less power consumption in your desktop setups. Not only does this keep more money in your pocket, but it also reduces your carbon footprint.
It may be a small change, but it does add up to help you code, game, and create with a cleaner conscience. Who said high performance couldn't be eco-friendly? Advantage 5: Advanced Connectivity Options In this connected world, your devices will have to learn how to play nice with others. New devices will feature the latest connectivity tech—5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and more. This will translate to faster data transfers, more reliable cloud connections, and seamless IoT integration for developers. Think of debugging a smart home system with no connectivity hiccups or collaborating on massive projects in real-time without lag. For gamers, it means goodbye to latency issues in online matches. Whether pushing code to a remote repository or coordinating a raid, rock-solid, lightning-fast connections make all the difference. Advantage 6: Superior Gaming Experience If you have yet to try the latest hardware, you are limiting yourself to a new world. Think silky-smooth gameplay with refresh rates that make motion blur a thing of the past. Modern GPUs don't just render games; they make them art forms. Ray tracing provides realistic light and reflection, while advanced physics simulations make gaming worlds more immersive than ever. With variable refresh rates and ultra-low latency modes, your only limit is skill. Advantage 7: More Productivity Time is our most valuable resource, and new tech does all it can to ensure you don't waste a single line of it. With AI-powered features at your fingertips on modern devices, mundane tasks are handled to leave you free for the big picture. Imagine an IDE that will autocomplete your code, understand the context, and suggest the whole function. Or a system that learns about your working patterns and optimizes peak performances when needed. For content creators, video editing software can automatically cut your footage or suggest optimal color grading. This isn't just convenience; these are game changers and could hugely improve your output and creativity. Conclusion The tech world is evolving fast; our tools must evolve at par. This means not just upgrading to the latest gadget but being future-proof. Users can expect rapid responsiveness coupled with superior protection measures. Embrace the new and be ready for what the future holds.

Scam Inc. (Economist) Edgar met Rita on LinkedIn. He worked for a Canadian software company, she was from Singapore and was with a large consultancy. They were just friends, but they chatted online all the time. One day Rita offered to teach him how to trade crypto. With her help, he made good money. So he raised his stake. However, after Edgar tried to cash out, it became clear that the crypto-trading site was a fake and that he had lost $78,000. Rita, it turned out, was a trafficked Filipina held prisoner in a compound in Myanmar. In their different ways, Edgar and Rita were both victims of “pig-butchering”, the most lucrative scam in a global industry that steals over $500bn a year from victims all around the world. Pig-butchering, or sha zhu pan, is Chinese criminal slang. First the scammers build a sty, with fake social-media profiles. Then they pick the pig, by identifying a target; raise the pig, by spending weeks or months building trust; cut the pig, by tempting them to invest; and butcher the pig by squeezing “every last drop of juice” from them, their family and friends. The industry is growing fast. The UN says that in 2023 the industry employed just under 250,000 people in Cambodia and Myanmar; another estimate puts the number of workers worldwide at 1.5m. Online scamming compares in size and scope to the illegal drug industry. Except that in many ways it is worse. One reason is that everyone becomes a potential target simply by going about their lives. Another reason scamming is worse than drugs is that the industry is often beyond the reach of the law.
Canadians had been feeling gloomy about their country. Trump changed that. (CSM) For over 30 years, the proportion of Canadians stating they were very proud to be Canadian hardly changed. About three-quarters said so. Last year, however, that proportion dipped considerably. Just 53% of Canadians polled reported being very proud of their national identity. Many experts put the drop down to the price of housing, the cost of living, and postpandemic fallout. The sense of anger, frustration, discontent, and divisiveness in the face of economic malaise has swept through Canada, as it has in many Western democracies. But then President Donald Trump threatened tariffs, and economists said a trade war with the United States could put Canada in recession. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are on the line. Mr. Trump has repeatedly said over the past month that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. Now Canadians are angry. At hockey and basketball games last weekend, fans booed while “The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed. When “O Canada” came next, they cheered wildly. Canadians have taken the opportunity to push a “buy local” campaign. “There’s this newly found pride in who we are as a country and as a culture,” says Srabana Dasgupta, an associate professor at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.
Aid recall (Washington Post) The Trump administration’s abrupt decision to repatriate the U.S. Agency for International Development’s overseas workforce has thrust the agency’s global staff into chaos and despair, as workers scramble to uproot their lives and brace for what they fear will be a shutdown of all American aid missions in 30 days. In interviews, USAID staffers said Tuesday’s recall order has sent them racing to make temporary housing arrangements back in the United States, identify new day cares or schools for their children, and plan for a future in which, as many now believe is inevitable, they are left unemployed. These employees, some assigned to dangerous “hardship” posts, are attempting to navigate that process with little information from the Trump administration and while many are locked out of all agency computer systems. “You find yourself in a foreign country, in all likelihood a place you moved to despite the terrorism or security risks, and you’re being treated as if you’re somehow an enemy of the state,” one USAID official told The Washington Post. “That’s not even the worst of it. You know that your career matters far less than the lives of those you were trying to help, and … a lot of them are going to die without American aid.”
ICC vows to continue 'providing justice' (BBC) The International Criminal Court (ICC) has vowed to continue its judicial work after President Donald Trump signed an order to impose sanctions on its staff. In his first term, Trump sanctioned ICC officials who were investigating whether the US committed war crimes in Afghanistan. These were then lifted under President Joe Biden. This time, Trump accused the court of "illegitimate and baseless actions", referring to an arrest warrant for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which Israel denies. The ICC also issued a warrant for a Hamas commander. The order follows Netanyahu's visit to the White House, in which he gifted Trump a golden pager, a reference to the deadly detonation operation in Lebanon in September.
Tariffs and Tightening Controls Threaten a Way of Life on the Border (NYT) The banks of the Rio Grande bristle with concertina wire. At intervals, Texas National Guardsmen and other troops sent by President Trump stand guard over the border. And several times a week, the sheriff of Maverick County, Texas, drives back and forth over an international bridge—to do his dry cleaning. “I get my hair cut in Mexico too,” the sheriff, Tom Schmerber, said during a recent trip as he hauled a garbage bag filled with his dirty uniforms. Those chores are the kinds of routine, international economic transactions that people on the border have long taken for granted—and that people far from the border, especially those making policy in Washington, D.C., rarely consider. And they are threatened by tightening controls that are already hampering crossings for many would-be consumers, investors and business interests in Mexico and the United States.
Panama rejects U.S. claim it dropped canal fees after Rubio visit (Washington Post) President José Raúl Mulino on Thursday denied a claim by the Trump administration that the Central American country had agreed to eliminate tolls for U.S. government ships using the Panama Canal, in an apparent setback to U.S. diplomatic efforts. “I am very taken aback by yesterday’s news release from the State Department,” Mulino said during his weekly news conference. “They are making important statements from the entity that controls U.S. foreign affairs based on a falsehood, and that’s intolerable.” President Donald Trump’s administration had portrayed Panama as a quick victory in its efforts to more strongly assert U.S. presence in the hemisphere. Just days ago, Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Panama on his first official trip and pressed its government to reduce Chinese influence in the country. Mulino subsequently said he would not renew an agreement to participate in China’s signature foreign infrastructure program, the Belt and Road initiative.
New law in Brazil is making students put away their smartphones at school (AP) Brazilian students returned to class this week with a new task: staying away from their smartphones as a new law restricting their use in schools took effect. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a bill in January limiting smartphone access at schools, in line with a trend seen in the U.S. and Europe. It applies to public and private schools, and applies to classrooms and the halls. Phones are still allowed for educational purposes, with the teacher’s permission, and when needed for the student’s accessibility and health. Schools can set their own guidelines, such as whether students can keep phones in backpacks or store them in lockers or designated baskets. Before the federal law, most of Brazil’s 26 states had already applied some restrictions to phone use in schools. As of 2023, nearly two-thirds of Brazilian schools had some limitations, with 28% banning them entirely.
UK demands access to Apple users' encrypted data (BBC) The UK government has demanded to be able to access encrypted data stored by Apple users worldwide in its cloud service. Currently only the Apple account holder can access data stored in this way—the tech giant itself cannot view it. Privacy International called it an "unprecedented attack" on the private data of individuals. The demand applies to all content stored using what Apple calls "Advanced Data Protection" (ADP). This uses something called end-to-end encryption, where only the account holder can access the data stored. Apple has previously said it would pull encryption services like ADP from the UK market rather than comply with such government demands—telling Parliament it would "never build a back door" in its products. No Western government has yet been successful in attempts to force big tech firms like Apple to break their encryption. The US government has previously asked for this, but Apple has pointedly refused.
The swarm of earthquakes shaking Santorini prompts Greece to declare an emergency (AP) Greece’s government declared a state of emergency on Santorini on Thursday after hundreds of undersea earthquakes shook the resort island for nearly a week. The ministry of civil protection’s announcement will provide authorities faster access to state resources. It follows a magnitude 5.2 tremor—the most powerful recorded since activity started on Jan. 31—that struck late Wednesday. Despite causing minimal damage, the earthquake activity has prompted an exodus of thousands of residents and seasonal workers, mostly evacuating to the Greek mainland by ferry.
Iran supreme leader says US talks ‘not intelligent, wise or honorable,’ upending push to negotiation (AP) Iran’s supreme leader said Friday that negotiations with America “are not intelligent, wise or honorable” after President Donald Trump floated nuclear talks with Tehran. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also suggested that “there should be no negotiations with such a government,” but stopped short of issuing a direct order not to engage with Washington. Khamenei’s remarks upend months of signals from Tehran to the United States that it wanted to negotiate over its rapidly advancing nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of crushing economic sanctions worth billions of dollars. What happens next remains unclear, particularly as reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian campaigned on and promised as recently as Thursday entering into a dialogue with the West.
Trump’s Gaza Plan Reflects Broader Push for Annexation of Palestinian Land (NYT) President Trump’s statements on Tuesday about an American takeover of the Gaza Strip and displacing millions of Palestinians were immediately dismissed by many as reckless and half-baked pronouncements, a provocative threat that Mr. Trump was unlikely to enforce. At the same time, his comments are the latest example of how government officials on the right in both the United States and Israel now speak publicly about a shared goal: the takeover of Palestinian land. Mr. Trump’s election has newly emboldened right-wing ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, and some of Mr. Trump’s own appointees, to speak publicly about Israel’s right to fully take over the West Bank. “It’s the most right-wing government that we’ve ever had in Israel—and there never was a U.S. administration that shared these views to this extent, either,” said Itamar Rabinovich, a former Israeli ambassador to Washington. Days after Mr. Trump’s election, Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s finance minister, whom Mr. Netanyahu has given broad authority over the West Bank, said Mr. Trump’s return to the White House meant that “the year 2025 will, with God’s help, be the year of sovereignty in Judea and Samaria,” using the biblical name for the territory that makes up the West Bank.
Corporate book piracy (Ars Technica) New emails unsealed in a copyright case lodged by authors against Meta revealed that the company trained its AI models on oodles of pirated books. New evidence shows that Meta torrented 81.7 terabytes of data across many shadow libraries of books, lacking the decency to pay off the people whose intellectual property would be chucked into the AI training dataset. That’s on top of 80.6 terabytes of data they torrented from LibGen. Several of the emails contain sentiments from engineers such as “Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right.” Well, that’s up to the courts but, yeah, that ordinarily is not the kind of thing one does from corporate gear.

Tiger goes after spaza market with more services
Business Day
3 Aug 2023
Katharine Child Retail Correspondent
Tumblr media
Consumer goods giant Tiger Brands has launched a bid to capture the cash-flush informal economy by servicing the township spaza store market directly.
The owner of Koo, Oros, Ace maize meal, Black Cat, Albany, Beacon and Jungle Oats plans to increase the marketing and supply of its products at spaza stores to drive demand at the lower end of the market as it tries to grab a greater share of the informal economy and grow its business.
It plans to supply spaza shops directly in areas where there are no wholesalers. But in most cases, it will continue to use large and small wholesalers, while driving demand for goods with advertising and a trader loyalty programme.
The informal economy is cash-heavy and poorly understood but has been getting more traction as the middle-class economy stagnates. Shoprite and its USave brand have a strong presence in the lowerend market, while Pick n Pay is expanding the footprint of its Boxer stores in townships and peri-urban areas, where it expects to see the highest growth in sales.
PRESENTATION
“With the local informal market remaining largely untapped and statistics showing that it is growing at a faster rate than the modern trade, we see exponential room for growth in this segment and are engaging closely to support our traders and better present our brands to consumers at the point of purchase,” said Luigi Ferrini, Tiger Brands’ chief customer officer.
Many consumers still use local spaza shops to top up their shopping, especially as these outlets offer credit and often repackage products in small quantities.
Ferrini said spaza shops have “highly competitive” pricing and are not always more expensive than bigger chains.
Tiger Brands has 170 products that it wants to sell in spaza stores, with research showing that at times only about 27% of these items are available in the lower end of the market. The company believes there is room for growth, says Ferrini.
Tiger Brands plans to have its
ranges available in 150,000 spaza stores in five years. At present its products are available at 46,500 spaza stores and it aims to grow the footprint to 50,000 by year end.
To drive demand, it will increase its advertising with branded fittings and fixtures in store, as well as murals and paintings on the outside of the stores. It has provided a software phone application to drive orders from traders.
It is providing fridges so the shops can sell cold Energade and Oros ready-to-drink juices.
Ferrini said Tiger has seen an increase in spaza shop visits, with an average consumer visiting a spaza shop at least four times a week.
The Township Consumer report, compiled by market research agency Survey 54 and digital agency Rogerwilco, found the number of people who shopped at spaza stores had risen to 51% in 2023 from the 44% recorded in 2022.
CEO of Survey54 Stephan Eyeson said its data shows the frequent visits were partly as a result of consumers buying perishable items on the day they need them because of loadshedding.
Tiger Brands has always sold premium brands such as Tastic and Black Cat, making it harder to compete with cheaper private-label products at retailers. It is launching more affordable brands such as Kasi Magic sauces.

- alright, guess i’ll go back to the CABOT HOUSE to tie up this business. he said a week, but i’m not going to remember that, so i’ll see if i can just talk to him immediately.
Tumblr media
- HANCOCK’s seen the LANDMINE MOLE RATS too???? what maniac keeps doing that????
- ooh, back at CABOT HOUSE the doors that previously were locked are now open!
- also JACK has a TERMINAL that i missed last time, which he’s apparently been using since 1968? he mistyped his username as JACK CAB0T lol.
    - looks like this is a log of his experiments on the ARTIFACT? he apparently tried a whole lot of different treatments, none of which worked.
    - something that pinged my interest though was that he possibly traded samples of the SERUM with military contacts through a SENATOR DESOTO - a name which we’ve seen before in his patient records, connected to ANTONIO DESOTO, who exactly 100 years, 2 months, and 20 days later was admitted “under special arrangement with family”. this is the one for whom “no treatment [was] necessary” - maybe he was supposed to be in prison but got put in PARSONS instead due to family connections? idk.
    - he also outright admits that he arrived at the SERUM through “trial and error” and doesn’t actually know how it works :|
    - EDWARD was hired in 2058 to replace the previous jeeves, who was getting on in years. i shouldn’t be surprised that it never occurred to JACK to share his SERUM with the hired help, even if they were extremely devoted and already in on the big secret :/
    - the typo in his username somehow persisted all this time despite his getting ROBCO to look into it specifically lol. sure, just call microsoft to have someone reinstall your computer software over a single glitched alphanumeric character. rich folk man.
    - EDWARD was apparently still human immediately after the bombs fell, but JACK made him work outside in the radiation anyway and that’s how he turned into a ghoul. i should’ve shot this motherfucker back at the asylum >:(
    - EMOGENE is apparently a badass, which we already knew.
        - i’m still conflicted about her - JACK was the most directly involved in this business, and it was apparently WILHELMINA’s idea to use the SERUM, but EMOGENE... idk. maybe she has a diary in here or something, but so far it seems like her choices were “toe the line and go along with what’s good for the family” or “die of old age while everyone else remains young and healthy and ostracises you forever”, and she’s just been reliving the existential crisis cycle ever since.
        - i kinda feel bad for her, actually. after a couple of decades there would’ve been no way for that to not have been an incredibly isolating experience - no way to leave without aging overnight, no way to invite anyone in if even the most trusted servants don’t get to take the immortality juice. she was trapped with this fucker and their mother forever. yikes.

25, any headcanons?
Pff
25 headcanons for the meme then
Mareeta eventually meets Larcei in the post FE4/FE5 world and beats her soundly because Major Blood makes people OP, it's unfair but that's Jugdral
Velthomer robes have always been black and red, even for the people associated with the Velthomer court, but Saias wears inverted colors to make sure no one knows he's secretly a Velthomer himself. It's a foolproof plan.
Roy is Ninian's son, and him being part dragon is what enables him to use the Sword of Seals ; Harmut came to believe in a future where dragons and humans could live together, Roy's the living proof of this (and Sophia cannot uses swords!).
Everyone expects Leanne's Raven Boy to be a little terror and make Uncle Reyson get grey hair, but it's actually the Heron Girl who has a lot of fun messing with everyone. Naesala is a proud dad.
After the base convo with Ike, Rafiel tried to eat meat. That's the reason why he couldn't join everyone in the Goddess's Tower.
Grandma Eleanora taught Roy how to dance
Rhea and Macuil always insisted on sleeping in Cichol's bed when they were younger with their big bro - Cichol used to think it was uncomfortable because each of them had beds and they were cramped in his, but after Zanado he misses it.
Finn taught everyone in Fiana how to ride a horse - it doesn't mean everyone can fight horse back, but they at least can ride one.
The first shipment for trade between the two nations of United Archanea and United Valentia involved flour and oranges. Legend says Marth enjoyed oranges so much he wanted to give orange juice to everyone in his realm.
Nyna, Tatiana and Zeke are living happily in Rigel with their 6 children.
Eliwood really wanted to grow a mustache like his father, but when he saw Hector's beard he gave up.
Sanaki and Miccy try to be on amiable terms, but the "you tried to fry me remember" and "remember when our ancestor talked to you and ignored me, and wanted to destroy the world because he forgot I existed while playing with you?" are hard to get over with. They are on good terms as rulers of different nations, but they are not on good terms as sisters.
Every ruler from FE10 went to visit at least once Goldoa, and Rajaion's son. Ena was overjoyed, even if she didn't know what to do with the 52 plushies.
When Citrus told Rhea she wanted to marry Jerry, Rhea wondered what she did wrong, Jerry has a rat tail ! Maybe by constructing Citrus she forgot to program the "what is pretty from what is not pretty" software?
Hilda is Arvis's half sister and one of Victor's bastards
Ephraim using so much of Renais's funds to rebuild Grado is very unpopular post FE8, some people of Renais think Grado deserved it because their Prince consorted with demons - something Ephraim actively refutes whenever he can, as a result his reign is not a very popular one
After Mila'n'Duma went asleep, Valentia mages cannot use magic without staves/tomes
During his journey, Nergal learnt his wife died, but unable to accept this fact + the promise he made to the children to bring her back pushed to dwelve deeper and deeper to the Dark Artes, and we know what happened.
Julia's major Naga son will start a new conflict in Jugdral against Seliph's children
After the events of FE4/FE5, Silesse decided to base their hereditary monarchy on Queen Erinys's heirs, regardless if they have a Sety brand or not (given how both father and son ditched the country during various wars).
Cyril sees Shamir as his teacher and Catherine as some sort of annoying older sibling who gives him noogies even if he told her he dosn't like it
Seteth named his wyverns after his dead companions
Ismaire offered Joshua his trademark hat when he told her he was leaving to "discover the world". It's the only thing Joshua will never bet on.
Hugh becomes the first Elibian mage to master Light and Anima magic, but he dies before Niime, who could never told him how proud she is of him, even if he doesn't use dark magic.
Scatach eventually learns how to use an axe after asking his cousin Iuchar(ba?)

Right, but OP was phrasing it as if pushing back against a community that reflexively condemns any tracing in any context for any purpose. And if such an un-nuanced taboo exists, who knows, maybe it's a heresy every time I use the line tool.
Sorry, this is me being kind of psychotic about Arting Wrong in a world where Arting Wrong is highly politicized/moralized and how it feels like cheating and They will catch me any day now for making bad unprofessional vector art for the wrong reasons and i haven't earned the right to see images because i didn't make them with an overpriced drawing tablet and inscrutable on-rampless industry standard software
nah, i don’t think OP was pushing back against a universal taboo against tracing—just emphasizing that it exists outside of an art theft context. The « let’s do crime » thing I took to be a joke
I get being sensitive about this though, once I partially traced a photo of Ava Gardner to get the feature proportions right and the juices flowing for a project and said something on FB about how I felt like I was cheating and not a real artist etc and a comic artist I respect immensely who admired one of my stencils once and did a trade with me was like « nah, no such thing as cheating when there are no rules ;) »
I think the OP was in a similar spirit

Latest iPhone Phones Continue Getting Significantly Better
Users more than likely are in agreement with me personally that iPhone X design was among the very best, and that is exactly why Apple decided to keep the identical look for their next set of exclusive cell phones. Introduced a year ago, it's the very first Apple cellphone to take out the main button. In the other, I held its own brand-new successor, the Iphone Xs. My eyes squeezed shut, I passed them back and forth between my hands, rolling each phone above, feeling the curves, glass springs, dual lens camera bumps, and radar vents. I realized that I couldn't tell the difference between the two phones. This is not a criticism. It is just a simple fact of S version years, in which Apple locks at the iPhone design and concentrates, rather, on upgrading key internal parts. Therefore, the biggest changes to the 5.8-inches Iphone Xs and its big brother, the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max, each of which I analyzed, can be seen in functionality (thanks to this new A12 Bionic CPU), photographs and movies, (new digital cameras and a new ISP endorsed by the A12), along with functionality (iOS12, the last version of which came pre-applied in my test units). The outcome is a pair of fantastic, tasteful, and high-performing devices that will please iPhone enthusiasts and receive over a few glances out of Android smartphones. It still has the exact rigid surgical steel frame wrapped into a brand new glass material which Apple stated was devised to be scratch resistant and heavy duty. I gave the phones a couple half-hearted drops on a thin-pile rug but wasn't prepared to let them slide away . So far I have discovered just one very nice scrape on your iPhone Xs Max. So let us consider them scratch-resistant, however still not scratch-proof. The bigger iPhone Xs Max shares all the iPhone X's substance and layout attributes, but does this in a 6.2-inch x 3.05-inch x 0.30-inch human anatomy. In 208 grams, it is substantially thicker than the Iphone Xs. The Xs Max is really a hair shorter (0.04 inches) and thinner (0.02 inches), however, it's also a couple of grams bulkier when compared to the Iphone 8 Plus, the big-screen telephone that from a space the Iphone Xs Max most looks like. Button positioning power/sleep, quantity controllers, ring/silent switch -- will be exactly the same. However, there is one minor chassis difference. At the bottom edge of the telephones sits the lightning connector. It's book-ended by means of a pair of drilled holes that accommodate one half of their stereo speaker program and among the telephone's microphones. There was six openings on either side. Now the ideal side includes six slotsbut the left, that just houses a microphone, has just three. This small change was done, in part, to adapt the new inner antenna configuration which includes 4x4 MIMO and License Assisted accessibility, which utilizes unlicensed 5 GHz range to provide 1 Gbps chip over LTE. Apple updated the water and also dust-resistance rating to IP 68, which translates to the handsets residing in 2 meters of water for up to half an hour. I did not get to go swimming with all the iPhone Xs or Xs Max, but didn't run the latter phone below normal water, juice and milk. Afterward, as advocated, I rinsed and dried off the smart phone. I was careful not to plug it back into a lighting cable (that is a no-no after a dowsing) but didn't put it on a wireless charging foundation at which it had no problem accepting a fee. Apple, incidentally, said it put some effort in making the wireless charging platform (basically the hidden coils within the phone) more forgiving. This is great news, since I have, on more than 1 occasion, woken up to find that my iPhone X did not charge because I placed it a modest off-axis about the charging base. I have never ran into that issue with the iPhone Xs or Xs Max. The Iphone Xs and iPhone Xs Max body frames are somewhat rigid and solid-feeling, but torqueable, particularly the bigger telephone, which actually creates a tiny clicking sound once I attempt to twist it. Apparently, I've just had those iPhones for a week, but based on a calendar year's experience with the original iPhone X (granted, mostly in a thin instance ), I consider this design framework tough and ready for the long run. Even now as Samsung follows Apple to the dense black cutout at the peak of this iPhone Xs and Xs Max, Apple shows no traces of going backwards in the multi-option technology, which neither grew nor slipped in the most recent iPhones. Just like the original TrueDepth Module, that one is still packed with all the exact components (none of that, as much as I can tell, have been updated). There is a 7 MP camera, dot projector for depth sensing, infrared camera (depth sensing), flooding illuminator (yes, too for depth-sensing), proximity detector, ambient light detector, the second half of the stereo speaker program, plus a mic. On the backs of the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, there is more of the custom glass, the Apple Logo, the word Iphone (but no"X" or"s"), along with the 12 MP dual camera system. This vertically-oriented, pill-shaped camera module appears exactly the same as it did to the last iPhone X. It is still a prominent bulge, but it didn't get any bigger. Within the module is new hardware backed by new image technologies, but more on that later. I've always considered that the 5.8-inch Iphone X an fantastic tradeoff involving a big-screen phone and hand-friendly ergonomics. The screen is large and immersive, however, the body is comfortable to hold and pocket. The iPhone Xs Max in comparison can, particularly if you're used to holding a more compact phone, feel big. It is not embarrassing to hold, however people with smaller hands will probably fight with one-handed use and will likely want to turn Reachability, which with a swipe down on the flat bar moves all halfway down the screen, which makes it longer accessible. Still, the trade-off might be worth it. I forgot just how much I like the larger iPhone display, and about the iPhone Xs Max, you get much more screen without contending with a bigger phone (there is just that 0.04-inch height difference between the Iphone 8 Plus and the iPhone Xs Max). Apple's full-stack management of the iPhone layout, development, and production process pays dividends throughout the handset. However, it's most clearly from the silicon, which can be designed and developed in conjunction with the software and hardware components that will rely on it. Last year, Apple revealed the A11 Bionic, a powerful cellular CPU with built in Artificial Intelligence Power. The newest A12 Bionic assembles on that short legacy with a more powerful Neural Engine and much more impressive graphics performance. When I discuss a brand new Iphone, I begin using Geekbench 4 to check out the raw CPU operation. To ensure that there are minimum background processes going, I usually run the exam before I've set up a single app. I ran the Geekbench CPU benchmark and (together with understanding that Apple stuffed an additional gig of memory within the brand new Xs course iPhones) found that the single core scores had improved marginally between the A11 Bionic along with A12 Bionic. However, that the multi-core score was inexplicably lower. Not by a good deal, but I hadn't ever seen that happen. The amounts were still much higher than what I obtained from Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845, however a lower result on the new Iphone didn't make sense. However, once I reran the Geekbench CPU evaluation per day or so after, the A12 multi-core numbers beat those of the A11. My guess is that, though I set up the iPhone Xs and Xs Max as fresh iPhones, there may nevertheless have been some background setup process going on that dragged down the CPU amounts. The bigger leap in functionality is in the Geekbench Compute Metal Score, which jumped from 15,145 on the Iphone X into 22,245 about the Iphone Xs and Xs Max. Apple's done a great deal of work to beef up graphics performance, particularly for the raft of ARKit two (and Surface 2) software heading into the stage, some of which can support multiplayer gaming. While there aren't a lot of ARKit 2 programs in the program store, I did get a hands-on time using an Iphone Xs operating Galaga ARthe identical demonstration Apple showed off during the iPhone Xs unveiling. To play with, me and a couple of other writers stood on a desk and pointed out our telephones at the Galaga video arcade game console. Soon, alien attackers began streaming first from the video game display and from all round us. I swung the phone from side-to-side up and up and down to watch and then shoot the incoming assault. It had been fast-paced and a lot of fun. In the same way, I've seen how, together with ARKit two, the telephone can set, say, a very realistic digital pressure stove or sneaker to a real table or at my toes, the illusion broken only when I slid my hands to the framework and, about the iPhone Xs screen, it looked just like my notes had been stuck beneath the pot. You can't encourage these kinds of real-virtual combinations without ample graphics horsepower, thickness mapping, and the AI required to identify how surfaces, shadows, and even reflections will work on virtual shapes in a real open space. This processing ability also helped amp more ordinary operations such as Face ID. While the procedure for registering my head was unchanged from the original iPhone X, opening either phone with my face, in addition to utilizing Face ID to access password-protected apps and services, is significantly faster than it had been about the iPhone X. Overall, in actual programs, both Iphone Xs and Xs Max run reliably. Apple place massive work into enhancing the photo and movie experience on the Iphone Xs and Xs Max. Along with brand new lenses and a bigger sensor, both the cameras (rear and selfie) are all backed by a fresh picture signal cpu. The technical specs on the double cameras are untouched by the iPhone X (and would be the same on either the iPhone Xs and Xs Max). There is the 1.8 wide angle lens along with the f 2.4 2X telephoto. Both of those comprise optical image stabilization and will shoot around 4K video at 60 fps. They still take slow-motion video in up to 240 frames per second. If you'd like insane 960 fps super-slo-mo, then you are going to have to look to Samsung. In the pure-play photography race, though, Apple requires the head. The Smart HDR uses detector, ISP, and neural engine enhancements to catch a number of the finest high-dynamic range photographs I've ever seen. The gap between what has been possible on the first iPhone X and the Xs and Xs Max is stunning. Apple produced a system suitable of shooting 2 frames each thirtieth of a second, and immediately analyzing and combining them into a single image that preserves not only foreground and background detail, but that can freeze actions without presenting tremendous grain. In multiple images, I saw that the iPhone Xs and Xs Max find colour and detail in dark spaces without wasting out the lighter areas. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is also an excellent low light shooter, however I think the Xs line is a little better. I'm particularly impressed with how Apple's built upon its own position position in Portrait Mode digital photography. Apple created Portrait Mode in 2016 using the iPhone 7 Plus (the applications lagged from the hardware). Since that time, Apple's elegant the technology, adding items such as Studio Light, Contour Light, Stage Light, and Stage Light Mono. All these attributes remain, and are somewhat enhanced. That which I love and, as an amateur photographer who regularly performs with f-stops to get just the perfect depth of field effect, is that the newest Depth Control. Depth Control lets you choose a Portrait Mode photo and correct the Bokeh, or depth of field attention, after you shoot the photographs. This works with both front and rear cameras, which means that the image chip is using two different types of depth details. On the rear, it's the benefit of two lenses to find stereoscopic info. The front camera relies on the depth-sensing hardware. I understand, Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 gives the capability to correct background attention as you're shooting the image, as well as after. But, there is an essential difference here that is evident in the iPhone Xs and Xs Max Depth picture editor. It's a slider that lets you adjust smoothly from an electronic f 1.4 aperture to a virtual f16. At a real camera with a mechanical aperture, higher numbers interpret to sharper focus from the background along with reduced numbers imply the focus thickness is significantly shallower. About the Galaxy Note 9, Live Focus basically sees the pictures as two planes: the foreground and background. The slider blurs the background plane. The Iphone Xs's depth slider is based on all of the depth advice to reduce or enhance background focus through all of the planes between the very front of their subject and the background. Together with the enhanced Portrait Mode stitching (handling how the subject and a blurred background fit together), the subtlety of this effect through the selection of virtual f-stops is remarkable and, Apple's explained, is modeled on how actual lenses together with hardware apertures would influence each image. For most people the smartphone is their only camera. This places a pro-level command from the hands of millions of individuals, who are about to begin taking some really awesome portrait photographs. Just after capturing normal pics, movie, and even 4K, I continue to be stunned with the standard of photos and videos coming out of their iPhone Xs and Xs Max. Sure, it is strange that the larger Xs Max doesn't, as might be tradition, have any enhanced picture capturing features, however I doubt anyone is going to be dismayed with the photo quality delivered by either new mobile phone. There are a couple of other hardware-related enhancements, such as the guaranteed dual-sim technology which allows for multiple telephone numbers (believe work and individual numbers of one phone) via the support of eSIM technology. Unlike ordinary SIMs, you don't require a carrier card just for the provider to confirm it and allow it on your phone. It's a wonderful characteristic which, for obvious reasons, I could not test. For sound aficionados, there's also the new stereo recording and wider-stereo playback. This can be relatively hard to check, and I occasionally worry my ears aren't good enough to notice what could be a more nuanced difference. However, I'd find a method. I recordedin landscape mode, a few cars driving by. They begin on the left of this screen and push to the right. In video I recorded together with all the iPhone Xs, the noise travels from one side of the telephone to the other. Playback about the iPhone X is loud but lacks the identical degree of separation noise. Clearly, films with a great deal of sound engineering aren't just great displays for the amazing displays, but highlight the new, wider stereo playback abilities too. As hardware/software relationships go, you can not do better than the Apple iPhone Xs and iOS 12. I have been running betas of their new mobile OS for months on my iPhone X and found it incredibly smooth and stable. About the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, it becomes even better spouses. In addition to butter-smooth and lighting fast operation (in matches, video, and internet browsing), the augmented reality abilities first released into iOS 11, ARKit, along with the iPhone X tend to be far more refined and easy to customize from iOS 12 and the Iphone Xs. The smart assistant is a much better listener than ever, and getting smarter. Her address is much more conversational and she is requesting follow-up queries. Siri can also be more proactive, putting connections between benign items such as locations and schedules and offering them beforehand. There are also a number of third party programs tapping into Siri, allowing you to use only your voice to access program features and data without even launching the app. You can set up iOS 12 on your older Iphone (down into this iPhone 5s), however not all of attributes, particularly those involving AR, will operate on the older devices. Still, I clearly advise the upgrade with anyone operating an Iphone 7 and up. It is simply a much better, more polished, educated, and smart user experience also, to be fair, I have hardly scratched the surface of all of the updates and feature improvements you'll find. Apple claims 30 minutes more battery life involving the iPhone X and Xs and 90 minutes more with the Iphone Xs Max. In my experience, either new phone might get you through the majority of the afternoon on a single charge. I spent one day using only the iPhone Xs Max. I retained the brightness high and ran all types of programs and procedures. It lasted a strong 10 hours. Perhaps a tiny bit less than I expected, but still enough for me through the majority of the working day. In all honesty, with less than a week under my belt, it is difficult to give a full assessment of battery performance. There are so many variables and, obviously, battery life will be good on new mobile phones. Talk to me in 6 months or one year, and we're going to see if I am still satisfied with battery life. It is not strange that Apple did not bring down the cost for the brand new $999 iPhone Xs (or hold onto the original model and market it at a lower price). I'm not even shocked that we finally have a nearly $1,100 version or that we're able to cover a whopping $1,449 for the 512 GB iPhone Xs Max (which happens to be the version that I tested). Apple's already proven that individuals will pay almost anything to get their hands on the latest iPhone. Is $1,000 or more to cover a mobile phone? Perhaps, however many people think about the entire cost instead of monthly payments? I am, however, a little annoyed that Apple stopped the lightning -to-3.5 mm adapter. It's as if, in the last 12 months, we've gotten rid of our audio and Bose headsets, such as it is a solved issue. Memo to Apple: It is not. What I will say is that these are the iPhones you desire. The iPhone Xs does not mess with that which I consider a traditional layout, and also the Xs Max simply takes all that's amazing about the iPhone X and expands it. As a set, they are just as beautiful as the original home-button-free Iphone X. The plan looks especially elegant in a gold finish. Photographers will love the new camera, and gamers and content consumers will want the big-screen iPhone Xs Max. Even if you own the iPhone X, I still wouldn't upgrade unless you absolutely need more realistic augmented reality and full depth control on your portraits. For iPhone 6s, 7, 8, as well as 8 Plus owners, the iPhone Xs and Xs Max is going to feel as a massive leap to the foreseeable future.

#9yrsago The Master Switch: Tim "Net Neutrality" Wu explains what's at stake in the battle for net freedom
Tumblr media
Tim Wu's The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires is as fascinating, wide-ranging, and, ultimately, inspiring book about communications policy and the information industries as you could hope to find. This is, of course, no surprise: Wu is one of America's great information policy scholars and communicators, probably best known for coining the term "Net Neutrality" (like many great Americans, Tim is, in fact, Canadian -- we attended the same elementary school in Toronto, where we enthusiastically traded Apple ][+ software and killed each others' D&D characters).
Wu's great strength is in the breadth of his scholarship and in his ability to use humor, clear language, and innovative arguments to connect diverse ideas. Thus in Master Switch, we have a brilliant explanation and history of what Wu calls "the Cycle," through which information industries rise, consolidate, monopolize, capture governments, force out competitors, and, eventually, fragment into something less grandiose, less perfect, but more vibrant, open, and innovative.
Wu connects the industrial and informational monopolies of AT&T, the film trust, the exhibitors monopoly, the radio monopoly, the fight over FM, the censorship of the Hays Code for film-makers, the liberation of the Hayes Code for operating modems, the dashed hopes for a diverse and vibrant cable TV landscape, and, ultimately, the invention of the Internet. On the way, he makes a convincing case that information industries are different -- the basis for every political revolution, every genocide, a "claim that can't be made of orange juice, heating oil, running shoes, or dozens of other industries."
The uniqueness of communications as an industry means that regulation and markets fail more often around them, and that the failures are worse. In response to this, Wu builds the case for a set of principles around information industry ownership, concentration, and structure, and proposes that these be regulated largely by an "information morality" -- not by a single regulatory agency or a single statute book, but ultimately by an emergent consensus about the value of information freedom as a vital substrate for free speech and free societies.
Tim has done rather a lot to this end already, simply by coining the idea of "Net Neutrality" -- an elegant restatement of the End-to-End Principle, couched in terms that laypeople can understand. One of my favorite interactions with corporate flacks in recent years was a phone call I had with a PR guy at Virgin Media, the UK cable operator whose CEO publicly declared war on Net Neutrality and promised that customers like me would be bought and sold like commodities by our ISPs and "content providers. The flack tried to obfuscate the question (a reliable PR trick) by saying that Net Neutrality was an ambiguous term that no one could agree upon. I was delighted to be able to tell this gentlemen than the term had been coined by someone I'd known since I was nine years old, that it was short and sweet, and was well-understood as a term of art among the still-living creators of the Internet, the Web, and TCP/IP, and to offer to give him their email addresses if he needed it explained to him.
In Master Switch, Tim gives us a glimpse into his vast and broad knowledge of communications policy and its history, the groundwork that gave rise to his ideas, and presents an inspiring path to a better world of better networks (even as he shows the risks of not taking such a path). He makes the convincing case that the Net is different, that its stakes are higher than any communications battle in memory, though the form of the battle is a familiar one.
Wu is that rare animal, an accomplished scholar who can write about complex ideas in ways that are accessible to all. And the ideas he's covering are as important as any in our ideological marketplace today.
