I think the reason I like Ash more than the new guys is because he actually got to suffer for his mistakes and face actual danger unlike Liko, Roy and Dot, who get saved every twelve seconds. Horizons feels more like the Friede and Captain show and the inclusion of the kids feels like a really long escort mission. Ash was thrown to the wolves with a powerful electric type that initially wanted him dead, and even when they were on good terms, he was in constant danger from a million different things and he still had to fend for himself without some fucking guy showing up and doing all the hard work for him. I know it’s not safe to leave children unattended in the real world, but this is fucking Pokémon. Child endangerment is the name of the game.

Ash got to make mistakes and get hurt for it, and he was allowed to actually do things on his own without a Friede in his life to show up and steal his thunder. Ash was allowed to be a functional character without Deus Ex Olivine stunting his growth and smoothing over every bump in his path. Liko, Roy and Dot still haven’t gotten to do anything important because Game Freak is too focused on making Friede look cool, and they all suffer for it because it looks like they’re never gonna get to be independent characters. Say what you want about Ash, but he had responsibility and agency as a character. Imagine if fucking Brock saved his ass every time something went wrong.
