Costa meets a young gardening couple who have created a habitat haven and productive paradise four storeys up.
City living offers many conveniences – but also many challenges for keen gardeners.
In busy Edgecliffe, right in the heart of Sydney, a rooftop garden overlooking a busy train line is the only space available to Philip Georgiou and Ian Belgiorno-Zegna, but they’ve still managed to carve out a productive, potted palace to enjoy outdoors.
“We’re really lucky to have this space,” says Phil.
The total area is 350 square metres – and 200 square metres of that is the roof garden. Some is paved and some has decking, but all the plants – from tiny succulents to olive trees – are in pots.
“I’ll use the herbs from here – we use the rosemary nearly every night,” says Ian. “Phil got me onto the native trees and I’m eating lilly-pilly berries now.”
Their Eureka lemon (Citrus limon cv.) tree looks really healthy. “We had lavender underneath, but we took it out and it’s really taken off,” says Ian. Costa agrees that’s a good move because lemons don’t like any competition around their shallow roots.
Costa spots a tumbler compost bin: “Because you can’t put in on the ground, this is really appropriate for this space,” he says. Turns out it was a gift from Phil to Ian for his birthday!
They’ve also joined the ShareWaste scheme after seeing in on Gardening Australia. They receive donations of other people’s garden scraps to make compost to use on their garden.
Costa checks out the compost and says moisture wise it’s perfect – he advises mixing it into the soil after clearing a crop or spreading it around crops, making sure to cover with mulch to stop it drying out and killing the useful microbes in the compost.
“Then that compost will perform all those feeding and water-holding roles.”
Ian and Phil are growing peas, silverbeet, carrots, rocket, pineapples, herbs succulents, cycads, cacti and plenty more.
They have done a lot of work to the roof area, which was all decking when they moved in. Some of the challenges include having to get an engineer’s report to check that the roof would sustain the weight of their many pots – the large cube planters weigh more than a tonne by the time they’re full of wet potting mix, and there are 13 of these alone, plus dozens of others.
Another issue was drainage – they had to make sure all the water would drain into one corner.
The pair loves native plants and have nearly 20 grevilleas, plus callistemon, eucalyptus and banksia. There’s also lots of edible produce that they use in the kitchen. Phil’s favourite is Grevillea rhyolitica ‘Deua Flame’, which has a pretty, pendulous red flower and bright green leaves. He loves them because they flower all year around and attract loads of bees.
They ask Costa about how best to prune a bottlebrush tree to reduce the size without hacking it too much. Costa advises trimming back the flower spikes after flowering. “That will keep it nice and dense,” he says. Cutting any dieback from the centre will also encourage more light in, and hence more shoots.
The row of larger native plants offers the garden some privacy from neighbouring buildings and a nice view from the sitting room.
Ian makes a rosemary sugar syrup to use in cocktails, so Costa presents him with a lemon myrtle bush (Backhousia citriodora) that he’ll be able to use for lemon-flavoured drinks, too.

How a professional strata garden maintenance service can help you prepare for summer
Summer is the perfect time to spruce up your outdoor space, and a professional strata garden maintenance company can help you do just that.
Garden maintenance for strata properties focuses on mowing the lawn, trimming and pruning shrubs, and planting flowers and trees to keep your outdoor areas looking the best they have. With the weather getting warmer too, occupants are likely to host more outdoor activities like barbecues.
With the right expertise and professional help, your tenants will be able to enjoy their surroundings with blooming flowers and pristine green lawns. Here are some ways that a reputable strata garden maintenance company can help maintain your outdoor space.
Knowing how and when to water your garden
With summer approaching, you might try to focus on ensuring that your tenants aren’t affected by the intense summer heat, but there are plenty of alternatives for relief from the heat. Outdoor plants, however, might be a challenge to take care of.
While frequently watering the plants and the lawn is a way to prevent them from drying out, what’s more important is the way you water them.
Here’s how a strata maintenance service will take care of the greenery surrounding your property:
Watering deeply instead of overwatering the plants for adequate hydration
Watering the lawns every week with at least an inch of water
Watering will be done at times when plants tend to absorb more water
Watering with drip irrigation to allow plants to get water gradually without any runoff
Mowing your lawn properly
With more tenants preferring to spend their free time having outdoor picnics or just relaxing under the sun, you might want to keep the lawn grass short. Frequently mowing the lawn, however, may not always control the growth of the grass.
Mowing your grass too often can actually damage your grass and may even leave you with higher expenses to bring it back to its original condition. A strata service that specialises in garden maintenance can help you stay on track and maintain your lawn in a way that doesn’t damage the integrity or aesthetic of the lawn.
While you may think that maintaining a lawn only requires frequent mowing, a maintenance service will use proper techniques to keep your lawn in good condition, which can help improve and maintain the standards of your strata property.
Using the right tools to maintain your strata garden
One of the most important parts of maintaining your strata property’s garden is to use the right tools. Without possessing the right experience, you may think that a lawnmower and a pair of hedge clippers can help you get the job done.
This isn’t the case, however, as it isn’t enough to leave your garden looking like it’s been handled by a professional garden maintenance service.
Strata maintenance services that handle garden maintenance will possess all the necessary tools for the best result. Professional equipment used by garden maintenance professionals includes shovels, garden spades, gardening gloves, trowels, rakes, and garden forks.
Strata maintenance crews are trained to expertly use professional garden maintenance tools and have a much better understanding of the tools that are required for each task. They also have the necessary items to help spruce up your strata garden.
Hiring professionals to undertake garden maintenance of your strata property guarantees that as a property manager, you don’t have to worry about sourcing these tools.
Enlist the assistance of strata garden maintenance services this summer
A professional strata garden maintenance service can help you create the perfect outdoor space for entertaining. They’ll also be able to suggest seating and lighting options that will make your outdoor area the perfect place for summer gatherings.

School Maintenance Landscaping Sydney: Creating Safer, Greener Learning Environments
School grounds are more than just the spaces between classrooms. They serve as outdoor classrooms, social hubs, and green sanctuaries that contribute to the wellbeing and safety of students, staff, and visitors. In metropolitan regions like Sydney, where school campuses range from heritage sites to sprawling new builds, professional groundskeeping is essential. That’s where school maintenance landscaping Sydney services come in—offering vital support in shaping environments that inspire learning, foster inclusivity, and stay compliant with regulatory standards.
The Importance of Landscaping in School Environments
A well-maintained landscape can influence more than just curb appeal. For students, it plays a key role in emotional regulation, play-based learning, and physical activity. For staff, it creates a more pleasant work environment. And for parents and the community, it offers a visible indicator of the school’s commitment to care and safety.
Key benefits of quality school landscaping include:
Improved safety: Regular maintenance reduces hazards like overgrown pathways, fallen branches, or uneven surfaces.
Enhanced mental health: Studies have shown that green spaces can support focus, mood, and behaviour in children.
Environmental learning: School gardens and native vegetation support STEM and sustainability programs.
Reduced vandalism: Tidy, well-kept grounds may discourage unwanted behaviour or unauthorised access after hours.
With this in mind, it’s clear that school maintenance landscaping Sydney is not a box-ticking exercise—it’s a core component of campus management.
What’s Included in School Grounds Maintenance?
Each school’s landscaping needs will vary depending on its location, size, and student population. However, most professional landscaping providers offer the following as part of a comprehensive service:
Lawn mowing and edging
Garden bed maintenance including mulching, pruning, and seasonal planting
Weed and pest control
Tree trimming and arborist inspections
Irrigation system checks
Hardscape upkeep (e.g. paths, playground edging, seating areas)
Storm debris removal and seasonal clean-ups
With schools operating on strict timetables and term-based routines, it’s important that maintenance is scheduled strategically to minimise disruption—often outside of school hours or during holiday periods.
Why Professional Landscaping Matters for Schools
While some schools manage groundskeeping internally, relying on a professional service may be more cost-effective and consistent in the long run. Trained teams understand local council compliance, horticultural best practices, and safe machinery operation on active school sites.
School maintenance landscaping Sydney by Waynes Landscaping offers comprehensive support across Greater Sydney. Their team works closely with principals, admin staff, and P&Cs to deliver tailored, safe, and timely landscaping solutions. Whether it’s weekly upkeep or term-by-term project work, the service is designed to scale with each school’s budget and layout.
Addressing the Unique Needs of Sydney Schools
Sydney’s diverse school environments pose unique landscaping challenges. From inner-city campuses with minimal green space to expansive western Sydney grounds vulnerable to heat and erosion, every site presents a different set of demands.
For example:
Heritage schools in the Eastern Suburbs may require delicate pruning and structural tree inspections.
Primary schools in the Hills District often request sensory garden installations or nature play zones.
Public high schools in Western Sydney prioritise erosion control and water-wise native planting due to clay-based soils and limited rainfall.
A service like professional services for school maintenance landscaping Sydney understands these geographical and logistical variations, providing location-specific expertise rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Aligning Landscaping With the NSW Curriculum and Wellbeing Goals
Landscaping isn’t just about trimming hedges. In many NSW schools, it’s tied directly to curriculum goals, particularly through sustainability programs, kitchen gardens, and Indigenous cultural awareness spaces.
Schools are increasingly:
Integrating outdoor classrooms into lesson planning
Using native plantings to support biodiversity studies
Creating edible gardens to support healthy eating education
Installing yarning circles to foster cultural inclusion
Waynes Landscaping supports these initiatives by offering landscaping plans that align with school goals and student involvement. Their maintenance services may include advice on planting schedules, soil health, and organic pest control—ensuring outdoor learning zones remain vibrant and functional.
For schools exploring these programs, a Tumblr post on green education highlights how natural spaces can significantly enhance student engagement and environmental stewardship.
Safety and Compliance: Non-Negotiables in School Groundskeeping
Safety on school grounds is governed by strict NSW regulations. Landscaping teams must not only carry public liability insurance and WWCC clearances but also follow Department of Education guidelines regarding:
Tool and equipment safety
Tree risk assessments
Slip/trip prevention
Chemical use (herbicides, fertilisers)
Allergen control
Failure to comply may impact enrolment capacity or trigger incident investigations. That’s why schools are encouraged to work only with landscaping providers who are experienced in educational environments.
The team at Waynes Landscaping understands these obligations and integrates risk assessments, site audits, and reporting as standard practice.
Budgeting and Scheduling: Making It Work Within School Timetables
Schools often juggle limited maintenance budgets. Fortunately, experienced providers offer flexible service plans that can be scaled seasonally or packaged for value. Some schools opt for fortnightly touch-ups during term, followed by more intensive seasonal clean-ups in the holidays.
Others request term-based invoicing or include groundskeeping as part of broader campus upgrades. In either case, transparency is critical—schools need clear reports, scheduled visits, and no surprises when it comes to service delivery.
A recent Tumblr blog on school facilities discussed the importance of grounds upkeep in long-term asset management, noting that regular landscaping can reduce repair costs for paths, drainage, and even building foundations.
Building Pride in Place
Students are more likely to respect and care for a campus that is clean, green, and welcoming. While it might seem like a small detail, well-kept gardens and safe play areas contribute to school culture and pride in place.
Engaging students in the process—through garden clubs, mural spaces, or composting initiatives—also builds ownership and awareness. The landscaping company becomes a silent partner in this education, providing the tools and infrastructure that make student-led projects possible.
Final Thoughts
School maintenance landscaping in Sydney is about far more than lawns and leaf blowers. It’s about shaping spaces where students can thrive, teachers can teach, and the community can connect. Whether you’re overseeing a small primary campus or a large secondary facility, working with a dedicated provider ensures that every square metre is safe, sustainable, and educationally enriching.
For expert support tailored to your school’s environment, school maintenance landscaping Sydney by Waynes Landscaping may provide the consistency, compliance, and creativity needed to meet both practical needs and long-term goals.

Breathe New Life into Your Yard with Expert Garden Restoration Services in Sydney
Keeping your garden vibrant and healthy requires time, effort, and expertise. For many Sydney homeowners, maintaining an outdoor space that looks beautiful year-round can be a challenge. That’s where professional Garden Restoration Services in Sydney can make a world of difference. Whether your garden is overgrown, neglected, or simply in need of a fresh design, a skilled restoration team can completely transform your outdoor environment into a lush, welcoming haven.
Reviving Overgrown and Neglected Gardens
In the fast-paced lifestyle of Sydney, garden maintenance often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Over time, weeds take over, plants grow wild, and once-pristine lawns become dry and patchy. Garden Restoration Services Sydney are designed to tackle exactly these types of issues. Experts assess the current condition of your yard and craft a personalised plan to bring it back to life. This may involve trimming, weeding, pruning, replanting, and even soil conditioning.
Restoring a garden is not just about appearance. A well-maintained outdoor space improves property value, encourages native biodiversity, and provides a tranquil space for relaxation and gatherings. With proper restoration, your garden becomes a functioning ecosystem again.
Landscape Design Tailored to Your Property
One of the key features of high-quality Garden Restoration Services Sydney is landscape redesign. Every garden has its own potential, and expert landscapers understand how to bring out the best in each space. Restoration professionals can redesign your layout, recommend new plant species suited to the Sydney climate, and incorporate elements like pathways, water features, or raised garden beds.
In suburbs like Bondi, Parramatta, and Sutherland Shire, where outdoor living is part of the culture, restoring your garden to its full glory can give your property a whole new lease on life. Whether you want a lush tropical retreat or a low-maintenance native garden, the right service will customise the design to your lifestyle and preferences.
Soil Improvement and Plant Health
Garden restoration isn’t only about aesthetics — it’s also about health. Many gardens in Sydney suffer from compacted or nutrient-depleted soil, which affects plant growth and water absorption. When you choose professional Garden Restoration Services Sydney, one of the first things that will be addressed is your soil condition.
Experts perform pH testing and apply necessary treatments to boost soil fertility. Mulching, composting, and fertilising may also be used to create a strong foundation for plant health. Once the soil is revived, the garden can flourish again, supporting lush lawns, vibrant flowers, and strong trees.
Restoring Lawns to Their Former Glory
A patchy or yellowing lawn can bring down the whole appearance of your garden. Lawn restoration is a vital component of Garden Restoration Services Sydney. Professionals identify the underlying problems — whether it’s poor soil, pests, or incorrect mowing practices — and restore the lawn to a lush green carpet.
In areas like Ryde, Chatswood, and Inner West Sydney, where space may be limited, a well-maintained lawn can provide a valuable outdoor living area. Re-seeding, top-dressing, irrigation adjustments, and turf laying are all part of the process to ensure long-lasting results.
Tree and Hedge Rejuvenation
Trees and hedges give structure and shade to a garden, but over time they can become overgrown, diseased, or unsightly. Part of any comprehensive Garden Restoration Services Sydney package includes tree trimming, hedge shaping, and even safe removal when necessary.
Experienced arborists work to retain the health of mature trees while removing any dangerous or dying branches. Hedges are pruned to encourage denser growth and a neat appearance, helping to reframe the look of your entire yard.
Seasonal and Storm Damage Repairs
Sydney’s changing seasons, especially the stormy summer months, can wreak havoc on gardens. Fallen branches, eroded soil, and broken fences are common aftermaths. Garden Restoration Services Sydney offer quick and efficient recovery for storm-damaged gardens.
Whether you live in Northern Beaches or Western Sydney, local restoration experts can clean up debris, repair plant beds, restore drainage systems, and get your garden looking its best again. Timely intervention also helps prevent long-term damage and costly repairs down the line.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Practices
Modern Garden Restoration Services Sydney focus heavily on sustainability. Restorations today aim to reduce water usage, promote native plant growth, and limit chemical treatments. Services often include installing water-efficient irrigation systems, using organic fertilisers, and planting drought-resistant flora.
Eco-friendly restoration not only supports Sydney’s natural environment but also helps homeowners reduce water bills and future maintenance needs. If you’re looking to build a garden that’s both beautiful and sustainable, hiring a service with green credentials is key.
Why Choose Garden Restoration Experts in Sydney

Why Regular Tree Pruning Is Vital for Tree Health, Safety, and Sustainability in Sydney
In Sydney’s dynamic climate, tree health depends heavily on proactive maintenance. One of the most essential practices is regular Tree Pruning Sydney. Strategic pruning strengthens trees by removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches and encouraging healthy, balanced growth.
Without proper attention, trees can become overgrown or structurally weak, posing serious safety hazards. Dead or compromised branches are especially dangerous during Sydney’s frequent storms, with the potential to cause property damage or personal injury. Engaging professionals for Tree Pruning Sydney helps minimize these risks while enhancing the tree’s natural shape and vitality.
Environmentally, regular pruning contributes to a stronger urban forest. Healthy trees offer better shade, absorb more carbon dioxide, and support local biodiversity — all vital for sustaining Sydney’s livability and resilience. A well-maintained tree not only boosts your property's appearance but also benefits the wider community.
However, there are situations where pruning alone isn’t enough. When trees become dangerously unstable or suffer from extensive disease, expert Tree Removal Sydney services are the safest course of action. Aus Arbor’s experienced team ensures any necessary removals are conducted efficiently and responsibly, preserving the surrounding landscape.
With a commitment to safety, sustainability, and professionalism, Aus Arbor delivers tailored tree care solutions across Sydney. Whether you need routine maintenance or urgent removals, trust their certified arborists to protect your trees — and your environment — for the future.
