Plant of the Day
Monday 10 February 2025
The cultivar Rubus 'Glencoe' (raspberry) was bred at the Scottish Crop Research Institute to have fruits that are a very deep purple. This is a tall-growing thornless raspberry and one plant will form a multi-stemmed clump. It is a floricane (summer bearing) variety which flowers quite early producing its harvest in midsummer on canes produced in the previous year. Here the beautiful red canes have been pruned and tied in readiness for the coming season.

Its spring, and spring is a time of new growth and flowers that bring forth summer fruits and berries, it also brings pruning. Pruning isn't a fun experience, its messy and it hurts....it hurts a lot...especially when its something you've wanted a lot.... but I think its important to have trust/faith in the One who has the shears. Our Father in heaven knows how to give good gifts to His children, and know what is good for us and what needs to be snipped. I invite you to have some quiet time with the Lord in reflection and be vulnerable with Him to let Him prune... "Not my will, but Your will be done..."

Information on pruning overgrown plants.
Your goals are to have adequate air flow throughout the plant, remove diseased or dead branches, and have good light penetrating the entire plant.
Remove any branch that is rubbing against another. This can cause an open wound on the branch, which is an opportunity for disease to invade the plant.
Remove branches that are growing toward the center of the plant. Also, remove any branches that cross each other. Remember we want to provide both air circulation and light penetration.
Remove any dead or diseased branches. A dead branch will be brittle, its buds will be brown. While a live branch will be flexible, buds will be green and there will be a green layer under the bark.
Generally, remove 1/3 of the plants’ height or 1/3 of its branches.
Remove any suckers and or waterspouts. These 2 types of branches look similar, growing straight up. However, a sucker originates from the roots or below the graft. While the waterspout will be vigorous and originate from the trunk or large branches.

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 8 April 2025
Perfect for training on the side of a warm barn is the large rambling Rosa 'Cooperi' (Cooper's Burma rose, Cooper's Burmese rose). This can reach up to 12m in height so it needs pruning and tying in every winter. In summer these stems will be covered in glossy, green leaves and large, single, slightly fragrant, creamy white blooms with a centre of golden stamens.
