Pete Astor and Dodgy Complete the Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas line-up

There was a time in the mid-eighties when every mixtape that I put together began with the same track: "Almost Prayed" by The Weather Prophets. I remember, like it was yesterday, seeing the band play at Treforest Poly in my hometown of Pontypridd and remember more than a few discussions about the band and their frontman Pete Astor with a mate in work at Companies House, Steve, who was a massive fan of Pete's previous band The Loft. For those unfamiliar with the heyday of Indie, The Loft released two acclaimed singles on the legendary Creation label, with "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" reaching No 3 in the independent charts. Pete and Dave Morgan formed The Weather Prophets in 1985, going on to have four top ten independent singles between 1986 and 1988. Their album Judges, Juries and Horsemen was a number one album on the indie charts in 1988.

Pete began a solo career in 1990 and has released 10 albums to this point, as well fronting Ellis Sound and The Wisdom of Harry. His latest solo album, Time on Earth, came out earlier this year. Pete works as a senior lecturer at the University of Westminster and is the author of Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Blank Generation.

Between May 1993 and September 1998, Britop combo Dodgy racked up a dozen chart hits, including the mighty “Good Enough”, which peaked at no 4 in 1996. Their album of the same year, Free Peace Sweet, achieved platinum status.

 The band have been long-time supporters of Crisis and other charitable organisations. The proceeds from this 2013 release originally went to The Trussel Trust. Massive thanks to the band for being 100% keen on contributing to Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas

My first submission

I am back. It was a time like in another world. No words for the effort, which I experienced in the last weeks. In the university, the submissions and requirements were becoming more and more. The language barrier always gave me strong headaches and tiredness. My laptop broke and my phone isn’t working either very well. So, a lot of aspects of getting frustrated. I think the most challenging task is to find out how to stop when everything is getting too much. I've spent every day at the university for weeks and still I'm a little behind in every subject.

But at this point, it is great to see that every single stress is worth it. I had my first submission four weeks ago and the related exhibition two weeks ago.

It was from my art module and we worked in a collaboration with the National Museum of Wales. Everyone, of my course has chosen an artwork, which he likes and then everyone has created a prototype for it. It's about making art more accessible for people who have visual impairments or other limitations.

My artwork was made by the impressionist painter Alfred Sisley. I decided to make a tactile access resource.

Two weeks after the submission, we shared our Creative Access Resource Prototypes in response to selected artworks at the National Museum of Wales with members of the Visually Impaired Group. The resources are made in the hope of making the artworks more accessible for the public and are often multi-sensory in their design.

Last week I got my grade for my art piece. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good outcome, but at least and most important: I passed!

If you think about the fact that I joined in the last year of another course, there are of course many things for me to catch up. Especially when it comes to the tasks, it means that I have to catch up on the gaps from the last two years before I get to work on the actual work. And that means more time, of course.

I headcanon Remus as Welsh, born at home in Treforest, Pontypridd

Tom Jones is also from Treforest, and in my head he’s a wizard (but obviously no one knows this because he had to keep it a secret).

The song ‘it’s not unusual’ by Tom Jones came out in 1965, therefore Remus’ family can probably be seen about the house vibing to it.

Michael Sheen's fundraiser for flood victims makes double its target inside 24 hours

He had originally hoped to raise £10,000 but the figure has already topped £26,500, with more than 900 people around the world making donations to support those affected

Welsh actor Michael Sheen's fundraiser for the victims of the flooding in south Wales has more than doubled his original target in less than 24 hours.

He had hoped to raise at least £10,000 for the flood-hit communities from the crowdfunder but the GoFundMe campaign has already raised more than £25,000 from around 920 donors.

On Friday morning that figure had risen to more than £26,500.

Residents in many different locations across the country have spoken this week of their despair as they begin to clean up the mess left behind by the weekend's torrential rain.

Watching this the 51-year-old actor decided to take action, saying: "The devastation that Storm Dennis has left behind is very real and thousands of people across the UK have lost everything.

"Friends and family of mine have been affected in south Wales and my hope is that we can raise money to help with the rescue efforts on the frontline.

"I see people working together to help their friends and neighbours. I see communities coming together and helping one another. I see people on the frontline doing everything they can to support those families whose lives have been turned upside down in the last few days."

Posting an update to Twitter, Sheen said: "Thanks so much to all donating and sharing. Already doubled our initial target within 24 hours!

"People all over world sending £10, £20 donations and saying sorry it's not more! Hugely touched by it. Let's keep going."

All the money raised from the campaign will go to the Wales Council for Voluntary Action, which Sheen has been the president of since 2017.

It will then be distributed to communities across Wales with those worst affected taking priority.

He is not the only high-profile star raising money.

Welsh rock giants Manic Street Preachers have dug deep to help the Pontypridd flood relief fund.

The band have made a donation of £3,000 to the online crowdfunder set up by Pontypridd MP Alex Davies-Jones.

The fund, which also includes a donation for £1,000 from the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, now stands at £21,000 after starting out with an initial target of £5,000.

The music community in south Wales have rallied around to raise money for those affected by the floods and for two music venues, The Green Rooms in Treforest and Clwb Y Bont in Pontypridd, whose businesses have been hit by the aftermath of Storm Dennis.
