Birds of the midnight sun by Knut-Sverre Horn, Norway. Winner, Urban Wildlife
Knut-Sverre Horn offers a glimpse of kittiwake chicks illuminated in an abandoned factory. From his vantage point inside an abandoned fish-processing factory, Knut-Sverre kept watch on the black-legged kittiwakes tending to their chicks on the windowsill. As midnight approached, the low summer sun struck the north-facing window, sharpening the birds’ silhouettes and giving him the image that he wanted. Kittiwakes naturally nest on the narrow ledges of high, steep coastal cliffs. Recently numbers have plummeted, and some have headed for urban areas due to shortages of food caused by warming oceans and pollution.

Norway’s government has “euthanized” Freya the walrus, and this article from two weeks ago shows another walrus, in the north of Norway, dubbed “Hvalrosette” (Walrusette).
Just...
Tumblr media
Don’t.
Tumblr media
Stop.
People like this are the reason animals like these are killed. They are not pets, they are not Disney characters, they are wild, unpredictable animals, who you are messing with. They can feel threatened, they can be territorial, they can have all sorts of sex hormones depending on the species and season, there can be a hundred and one other reasons they would act aggressively.
And then the animal is shot, and the humans aren’t punished. (Even if the animal never acts aggressively, but people just won’t leave it alone and it’s killed as a precaution, as happened to Freya.)
A brief search shows me that this walrus was a male with a known identity, but a paywall prevents me from reading more. Since he hasn’t been mentioned in more recent news, I guess (and hope) he got away from there.
When you live on the edge of wilderness like the Norwegian sea, you have to try to coexist with animals. And that is done by leaving them alone. This misguided love (which only extends to “I want to get close because it’s cool”) gets the animals killed. Our ancestors who lived here for thousands of years, with far more wildlife like this, would not have gone up to wild animals to try and pose with them. They had more sense.
And as this article points out, Freya had made it through five countries before she came to Norway. The Norwegian government is not kind to wildlife, as can be seen in our native predators only being allowed to exist on the brink of extinction.
The walrus Freya was first observed in Tromsø in 2019. Since then she has visited Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Shetland and Sweden. But it was only when she came to Norway that she became a threat. "Don't get as close as Aftenposten's photographer", wrote Aftenposten in a report about the boaters on the fjord looking for the summer's big celebrity. The media's hype over the event has probably contributed to the Oslofjord becoming the most dangerous fjord for walruses.
One might suspect that the knowledge of wild animals originates from Disney. Or is there simply something wrong with the mind? An animal weighing over half a ton is no cuddly toy. But in the country where Disney comes from, it seems that they have come further than us in Norway in how to treat wild animals. A YouTube film shows hundreds of walruses and seals on floating docks set up for the animals at a marina. It can also be solved that way. But here you choose to euthanize.
The Norwegian government was like “oh yeah we could move her but it would be too risky”. Meanwhile, France tried to move a beluga that had gotten into its river, and was only forced to euthanize him when his health deteriorated.

Call for Northern Saami pen pals?
Hello! My name is Kayd and I figure I may as well make a formal post on tumblr after debating this for a little while. I’m seeking out Northern Saami pen pals to write to, or maybe even someone living in the Romsa ja Finnmárku/Troms og Finnmark area.
My grandfather’s family is Saami, which we did not know until recently when I was looking at old photos and recognized the Romsa Gákti- however I’ve suspected this for some time. It makes me sad to say this side of my family is very broken, stemming back to my great great grandfather, and there was little understanding to why. They immigrated to Canada in the late 19th century and early 20th with Norwegian immigrants and naturalized.
My grandfather was an amateur historian and genealogist, looking into his own family, as is my mother. I greatly looked up to my grandfather, he taught me to fish, to hike and was a man comfortable in nature and I miss him dearly. It’s my belief that he would have wanted to learn about this rift, as he considered culture very important. I am learning about Saami culture, reading books, watching films. But if there’s interest, I would like to talk to somebody immersed in the culture, both to learn and reconnect, as well as make a friend!
A bit about myself: I’m 21, live in Canada and I’m a university student studying environmental science and art. I enjoy history, fantasy, science fiction stories and video games. If we connect, I would like to draw you pictures (examples below!) :)
