Cement bags loading in railway wagon rakes has attained a new dimension through the new ten sets of ‘butterfly conveyors’ (name based on the design of Vivian conveyors ) recently delivered and commissioned by Vivian Conveyors for Adani Cement’s Rabariyawas Cement siding at Rajasthan, located within the cement production plant of Adani Cement. 

The mechanisation of loading the break bulk cement bags from trucks to the railway wagon rakes, aided by the conveyors, has contributed to large-scale productivity improvement. This has also resulted in the curtailment of labour costs, and faster wagon rakes turn around, thereby avoiding chances of incurring demurrage charges from the Indian Railways.

Mentioning the productivity of the ‘butterfly conveyors’, “ Through the electrically operated conveyors,

complete 1200 cement bags can be loaded or unloaded in full one hour in one covered railway wagon. This used to earlier take close to 6 hours with the involvement of 12 labourers unloading the cement bags from the trucks and transferring them to wagons, and subsequently stacking them. Now with the 6-meter conveyors, one end of the machine is placed on the truck body floor or ground, conventional wooden-bodied truck and the other end is placed on the wagon door entrance for every easy movement of the cement bags from one end to the other or vice versa.” He adds, “ With wheels attached below the structure of conveyors, they can be shifted manually from one wagon door to the other to facilitate quicker loading and stacking of the cement bags.” Adani Cement weekly loads three full 58 wagon rakes from Rabariyawas siding.

“ The decision of Adani Cements to acquire Vivian conveyor’s wagon loading conveyor has been on past credentials, where Vivian has successfully delivered and commissioned the butterfly conveyors at their rail cement siding at Sankrial in West Bengal, near Kolkata. Besides, the positive performance credentials with other cement loading facilities were also behind the decision to go for Vivian machines. However, importantly it has been the reliable performance of the machine, ease of maintenance and higher machine availability behind choosing our conveyors compared to competitive offerings.

The conveyors made at Vivian’s Pune facility, feature ease of transportation. The, fully assembled, the entire structure can be directly transported to the work site/ railway or truck siding and can be commissioned in a day. While appropriate levels of fabrication and welding make the machines durable, enabling them to withstand rough handling. The fixed conveyors assist direct loading & unloading of the cement bags on the trucks parked on the other end of the warehouse following the unloading and stacking of the cement bags from the railway wagons.
