From 1899 she exhibited with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society; many of her bindings were on Private Press books for friends in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Katharine Adams designed both the bindings and most of the special tools used in their decoration. The acorns and oak leaves, here forming the border, and pointillé floral designs, using numerous small dots, are characteristic of her work. The central panel bears heraldic roses and pomegranates, uncial Ms, and crowns like Queen Mary's 1911 coronation crown. With ninety-eight pages and 316 plates, the book was printed in London by the Oxford University Press for the Trustees of the British Museum. Knit reflection

Overall I found that knit can be extremely hit or miss mainly because of how easy it is to drop the needles just like hand knitting. However, when it goes as planned, even the least technical sample looks impressive and the feeling is so rewarding. Because of how temperamental the knit machine is and how frustrated I can see myself getting, I won’t be choosing it as my specialism. I much prefer the outcome than the process.

Independent Study Visit - Tate Britain

William Frederick Yeames (1835 -1918) - Amy Robsart exhibited 1877

David Hockney born 1937- Man in the shower in Beverly Hills 1964

This painting is of Amy Robsart (1532 – 1560) wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Queens master of the horse.

In the painting Amy is found dead at the bottom of the staircase by Anthony Foster and a male servant both higher up the staircase looking down at Amy. The death is believed to be suspect and the main suspects are Foster, Robert and or the queen.

The picture is painted by William Frederick Yeames whose work is primarily centred around the Tudor period.

In this painting you are forced to look at the body of Amy as she is ethereal in white fully out stretched before you while the two men are in the shadows darkly dressed looking down on Amy.

The relationship between the viewer and the sitter is one of voyeuristic as the sitter is dead wearing white light clothing with no footwear. The representation of the body is according to Fowle (2000 Pg 1) romantic “The women’s body lies bathed in light, the cloak romantically arranged across the bottom steps … she appears less bruised and battered victim of a vile murder than a seductive sleeping beauty”. This interpretation also helps to confirm the binary male active mind versus the female passive body. Moreover, the sense of male power dictates how women are perceived in different types of media. (Mallik 2018)

Class and race do play a part in representation Mallik (2018) believes that it is the white male that takes the lead on the sense of what represents women in art. Amy for example is of noble blood and therefore it could be argued that it would not seem fitting to see her completely bloodied and bruised in a way in which we might expect of a person who has fallen down the stairs.

My second painting is based in the twentieth century by a well know artist called David Hockney born 1937 whose career started in the 50s and 60s.

Hockney’s painting is called “Man in the shower in Beverly Hills” 1964. The painting depicts a naked man with his back towards the audience bending over ready to get into the shower. Hockney completed this painting while in Los Angeles, California. The area was well known for its Boeheim lifestyle and the acceptance of homosexuality which was banned in England at this time. Therefore, as Hockney is gay himself he found the freedom to express himself with other artists in a way it could be argued enabled creative and artistic people to flourish. (Valinsky 2018) Moreover, Hockney was able to represent his sexuality in his art. (Sotheby’s 2018)

It could be said that Hockney had a fascination with men and water. Showers, swimming pools, bathers all featured in his work. The information plaque at the Tate says “For an artist the interest in showers is obvious: the whole body is always in view and in movement usually gracefully, as the bather is caressing his own body”.

The painting encourages you to look at the body as he is the only person in the painting with the exception a large plant that obscures the feet of the man.

“Hockney doesn’t choose to show the man’s feet. Rather his focus is on the body – the ultimate object of desire”. (Valinsky 2018) The man’s face is also hidden in the painting which means that the balance of power is with the viewer and not the subject. (Sartle 2012-2019) calls the viewer a “pervy peeping tom”.

The theory of the male gaze helps to explain that what’s going on in the painting. It could be argued that having a shower is usually an act performed in private but in this picture the act is made public by the painter. Therefore, the gaze is one of power and could be argued again one dominated by the white male (Malik 2018).

Both paintings although of different time periods conforms to Halls (2003) belief that the person with the power is able to ensure that the meaning of representation is sustained via communication and art is if nothing else is a form of communication.

History of Suffolk county’s architecture

The architecture of the county of Suffolk is a mix of colour and character, with timber-frame and flint, pargetting and thatched roofs, moats and chimney stacks

Scattered around the flinty-grey churches of Suffolk, you will sometimes see groups of brightly-coloured cottages, for all the world like flowers growing about the stumps of dark oaks. This contrast is typical of Suffolk, for this Eastern county has no quarries or brickworks, and its people have always collected bits and pieces with which to create their buildings. As a result, many Suffolk buildings are glorious jumble of flints from the beaches, rushes from the marshland, and clay and timber from the farms.

That is not to say that Suffolk lacks grand homes. There is Elveden Hall, where Angelina Jolie filmed part of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, not to mention Framlingham Castle and Ickworth House. Yet somehow it is often the humbler homes that engage the emotions and delight the eye.

Just inside Suffolk’s southern border, Long Melford’s rambling village street is lined higgledy-piggledy with five centuries’ worth of typical vernacular houses. Some are plastered, some are timbered, and some boast the enormously tall chimney-stacks that betray their Tudor origin.

Five hundred years ago, those quaint buildings represented the last word in homes and warehouses for hard-nosed modern businessmen, for medieval Long Melford was a thrusting, busy place. Like many other Suffolk towns – notably beautiful Lavenham – it was built with money from the cloth trade, and it did very well indeed. In Lavenham, the beautiful timber-frame Guildhall of the Wool Guild of Corpus Christi still stands in the market place and is now under the care of the National Trust, with a museum and exhibitions on the medieval cloth industry.

There were around 30 weaving businesses in Melford, plus associated craftsmen like dyers who made pigments from the plants they gathered in the surrounding countryside. Yellows and greens came from nettles and cow-parsley, reds from ladies-bedstraw, and mauves from damsons and sloes.

Indeed, it was probably the dyers of Suffolk who first stumbled upon the idea of Suffolk Pink – an exquisite example being the pink cottages by St Mary’s Church in the village of Cavendish. The Suffolk Pink concept has now become so popular that a new variety of apple (discovered in Suffolk, of course) has been named for it.

Traditionally, though, it is a style of decoration: some have diamond-paned windows and oversailing upper storeys. Others are medieval moated halls, or cottages with low doors and steep thatched roofs. What they all share is their colour – pink. Shell-pink, rose-pink, geranium, even raspberry.

Centuries ago, these pink shades were created by adding natural substances to traditional lime whitewash. The cottager might perhaps stir in some elderberries – small black globes that release an amazing carmine red – or dried blood, or crumbled red earth.

Long Melford’s wealthy burghers also built the longest church in Suffolk – the amazing Holy Trinity. The size of a cathedral, it is as splendid inside as out. It contains, among other treasures, Suffolk’s largest collection of medieval glass.

Most of this glass commemorated the Clopton family, who lived in the village’s Kentwell Hall. A large brick mansion, Kentwell is essentially Tudor, with a Gothic centre block. Its latest owners insist that it is no stately home, just a family dwelling – albeit a very unusual one.

Kentwell has moats as well, and so do many smaller old Suffolk houses. By the 1500s, moats had become popular ornamental features and although many of Suffolk’s smaller moated houses are not open regularly to the public, although many offer private tours by arrangement. However, some have exquisite gardens which they do open during the summer months, such as those at Helmingham Hall, for example, home of the Tollemache family for 500 years. Here, there are two drawbridges which are pulled up every night as they have been since 1510, and the hall reverts to being an island, protected by its wide moat.

The historical gardens at moated Otley Hall, just north of Ipswich, are open by arrangement, and they include such curiosities as a croquet lawn and a nuttery. The gardens of nearby Heveningham Hall are also often open, and they contain many secret bridges and tunnels, as well as an elaborate parterre.

Parterres, popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, capture the curlicued decorative style of this period perfectly. They are hard to create, hard to maintain, and you cannot use them for much; so they made a perfect status symbol.

So, too, did the pargeting which became popular in Suffolk and adorned the walls of so many Suffolk houses. First seen around Henry VIII’s time, this elaborate custom-made plaster decoration has undergone something of a revival in recent years, although few modern displays can equal the best of the old ones.

In fact, gorgeous though pargeting looks, expert Tim Buxbaum believes that the craft developed partly as a way of covering up second-rate timbering or untidy new extensions on the outside of houses. “Coating the structure with a decorative coat of plaster was a good way to give an old building a new lease of life,” he says.

Buxbaum, who runs a conservationist architectural practice in Lower Ufford, draws special attention to the Ancient House in Ipswich, one of the finest surviving examples of pargeting in the country.

Commissioned in the 1600s by Robert Sparrowe, a widely travelled spice merchant, the house carries representations of Neptune with a trident, riding a sea-horse, St George and the Dragon, and Atlas carrying the world upon his shoulders – and that is just a fraction of its ebullient imagery.

Suffolk’s churches offer an exterior contrast to its ornate or colourful houses. One of the most famous Suffolk churches is Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, near the coast. It is full of light yet also shimmers with mystery. Inside, its wooden roof is covered in carved angels. Not far away, at Huntingfield, the rector’s wife, Mildred Holland, hitched up her skirts, climbed onto scaffolding and lay flat on her back for eight months in the 1860s to paint a stunning, Pugin-esque masterpiece of Victorian Gothic angels all over the ceiling.

In contrast, the parish church of St Peter and St Paul of Lavenham is typical of the wool churches of the county – completed by 1530. After visiting the church, stroll down the hill into the town, which has nearly 350 listed buildings. It’s regarded as one of the finest surviving medieval towns in England. Some parts of the town must still look much as they did when Elizabeth I made a grand state visit in 1578.

Indeed, when Robert Louis Stevenson visited Lavenham in 1873, he thought it looked, even then, like “what ought to be in a novel.” Now, of course, he would be imagining Angelina Jolie in a movie. Which all goes to show that times may change, but Suffolk does not.

Since video takes up more bandwidth than text and imagery, ISPs may charge more. Dismantling these rules may harm tech giants such as Facebook, Google, Amazon, Netflix, and Spotify etc. These large tech firms may be worse off while consumers may or may not receive fair and open online access to all websites.

Harvard public finance professor Martin Feldstein, however, says this tax overhaul is worth its costs because U.S. corporations will use their tax cuts to boost real wages and capex investments, and these firms will repatriate $2.5 trillion offshore cash to invest in job creation, manufacturing automation, and R&D innovation. In line with some economists' op-ed articles and blog posts on the probable effect of the Trump corporate tax cuts on real wage growth, a firm invests up to the point that the after-tax return on its labor and capital investments equates the return that investors require to allow the firm to expand its factor inputs. As the firm receives income tax breaks, it finances the purchase of new machines, plants, and computers. These capital expenditures make the typical worker more productive. Then the firm wants to hire more workers to run the new machines and computers etc. As a result, the typical firm raises real wages until the economy restores its steady state. Hence, tax cuts can effectively boost real wage growth ceteris paribus.

Tech titans from Apple and Amazon to Microsoft and Google can benefit from the G.O.P. tax reform. Large multinational tech firms such as Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon can benefit much from the G.O.P. tax reform. A recent stock research report assumes the effective U.S. corporate income tax rate declines from 35% to 21%-22% in January 2018 with no subsequent changes in international taxes and all other aspects of the U.S. tax legislation. Specifically, Google will receive tax benefits of more than $2 billion in 2018, Facebook expects to attain tax cost reductions of $1.5 billion, and Amazon will enjoy about $1 billion in tax credits. Also, these tech firms plan to expand their capital expenditures with preferential tax provisions in the Trump administration's current tax reform. Overall, these tech firms can expect to achieve hefty tax benefits in the range of $4.5 billion to $5 billion in the 5-year period from 2018 to 2022. Harvard macrofinance professor Greg Mankiw entertains a key policy question: how much would the average real wage rise for each $1 decrease in the typical firm tax outlay ceteris paribus? The answer is likely to be $1.5 to $2 in real wage terms for each $1 tax cut, or equivalently $4,000 to $ 9,000 per capita per year. Several eminent economists such as Brad DeLong, Larry Summers, and John Cochrane suggest that if we take into account positive externalities and positive returns to the scale of capital usage, the resultant real wage increase can turn out to be higher. An open controversy clouds the fundamental view of whether these massive tax cuts may exacerbate fiscal inequality in America.

Hot or Not? at Sotheby’s on a Chilly Sydney Winter Night

On an evening in Sydney with an arctic chill in the air, Sotheby’s sale of Important Australian Art in Sydney on 28 August 2018 did break a number of Australian auction records. But one still has to wonder about the random nature of selling art in the auction room, which can particularly be observed in a tight sale containing just 67 lots. Perhaps before bidding commences, the audience might be asked to “Hot or Not” the artwork with a thumbs up or down in the Amanda-Keller-style of “The Living Room”.

The art of Del Kathryn Barton is clearly furnace hot at the moment, so no need to ask for a thumbs up, as paddles were blazing to acquire this first lot in the sale. The monumental large work from 2004, titled Farewell, (Lot 1 ) was an excellent starter with extremely wide estimates of $150,000-350,000, suggesting great possibilities for this painting; it actually settled nonetheless at a very healthy $200,000 hammer price.

The number 2 Australian hot artist of the moment coincidentally, or perhaps not, is Cressida Campell. With an exhibition slated at Simon Lee Gallery in London in 2019, you would think the only way is up price-wise for Campbell’s work. There has been an insatiable appetite to acquire her work in the auction room. The highest hammer price however dates back to April 2015 when Banksias, 2004, sold at $90,000. Perhaps the estimate of $90,000-120,000 for Wheat Fronds and Sky, 2016 (Lot 2 ). was just too bullish for most, as this - nonetheless exceptional - work got the thumbs down from the audience last night.

Not simply hot, but rather parched, Lin Onus’ Frogs, 1988 (Lot 3 ), a painting of a cracked, bone dry landscape is about as poignant an image in today’s drought-stricken Australian climate as you can get. The painting sold to one of Onus’ loyal collectors for $150,000, right on the low estimate.

There was fierce competition in the room for a Gordon Bennett Landscape from 1993 Edge (With Displaced Point of Identification) (Lot 4 ) which sold nicely mid-range of the estimates at $35,000, and similarly a monochrome townscape by Howard Arkley, Tudor House, Fitzroy Gardens, 1987 (Lot 6 ), had numerous bidders to secure this piece of real estate at $42,000, just above the low estimate.

Meanwhile there was a thumbs down for the upside down Woman in a Landscape, 1998 (Lot 7 ) by Juan Davila, which failed to sell on its expectations of $60,000-80,000.

Nicholas Harding’s In the Swell, 2006 (Lot 9 ) suffered no such fate, as this much feted artist’s painting went above its $25,000 high estimate, selling for $28,000.

Clearly, there were a number of bidders who had already assigned a suitable location for Dale Frank’s dreamy but massive 200 x 260 cm Conara Cleveland Epping Forest, also from 2006 (Lot 10 ). On estimates of $30,000-40,000, it also got a massive thumbs up with $55,000 hammer price.

Speaking of dreamy: there was also a massive battle for a classic Clarice Beckett Beaumaris painting (Lot 15 ), which achieved a red hot $46,000 on expectations of $25,000-35,000.

Two equally fabulous works by Grace Cossington Smith brought out the buyers too, with Chair in the Room, 1960 (Lot 16 ) selling for $68,000, well above its $45,000 high estimate, while Fruit in the Window, 1957 (Lot 17 ) with one-time Joseph Brown provenance and estimated at $200,000-250,000, proved to be even more tantalizing, and was only secured at $370,000.

Perhaps someone had turned up the heating, as the excitement continued with Fred Williams’ Orange Hill (1966-67) (Lot 18 ), last sold by Menzies in September 2004 for $275,000 hammer price. It simmered along nicely to a sale price last night of more than three times its previous sale price in 2004 for $900,000 hammer, surely to the delight of the seller.

There was no boil over however for Brett Whiteley’s Harbour (Grey Day), 1978 (Lot 19 ). This magnificent and easy on the eye picture purchased from Australian Galleries almost exactly 40 years ago, and the cover lot of the catalogue, had all the potential for a $2 million plus sale.

Given Opera House was sold by Sotheby’s in May 2007 for $2.4 million IBP on the same estimates of $2 to $3 million, and The Olgas for Ernest Giles, 1985, achieved $2.9 million IBP at Menzies in June 2007 on expectations of $2.25 to $3.25 million, Harbour (Grey Day) looked particularly ripe for re-sale, but did not get the thumbs up on the night. (For what it’s worth, we think it’s hot.)

In fact, further analysing the data of Australian Art Sales Digest reveals that this is only the fifth time in Australian art auction history that estimates at or above $2 to $3 million have been set for an Australian painting. The other two were $3 to $5 million for Sidney Nolan’s First Class Marksman, sold for $5.4 million IBP by Menzies in 2010, and Whiteley’s My Armchair estimated at $3 to $4 million, selling for $3.9 million IBP also at Menzies in 2013.

A number of paintings by for example John Brack, Russell Drysdale, Arthur Streeton and Frederick McCubbin have sold above $2 million, but with lower estimates and therefore above expectations.

An interesting Australian record however was set last night for Brett Whiteley for a tapestry titled The Artist’s Studio (Lot 24 ), created by Pinton Frères in Aubusson/France in 1976, and held in a private London collection since 1979. Frenetic bidding ensued on its $100,000-120,000 estimate, shuttling to the Australian tapestry record of $175,000 hammer price.

It was a tale of two bridegrooms from Arthur Boyd’s significant Bride paintings. Drowned Bridegroom (1959) (Lot 20 ) rose up to meet the buyer’s expectations, selling for the low estimate of $1.6 million, and in the process creating a new record price for the artist. The previous record was set also by Sotheby’s in August 2012, when Bride Running Away 1957 sold for $1.4 million hammer price. Meanwhile, Bridegroom in Black Creek, 1960 (Lot 43 ) was left languishing on estimates of $650,000-850,000.

A couple of spectacular recent results for Ralph Balson in the James Fairfax collection at Deutscher + Hackett and from the Michael Hobbs collection at Bonhams have lifted interest in the artist’s abstract compositions. Non-Objective Painting, 1955 (Lot 26 ) at Sotheby’s has added to this trend, which is putting Balson firmly on the “Hot” list. It sold at the high estimate on expectations of $80,000-100,000.

Two Streeton water views painted 30 years apart, San Giovanni a Paolo, 1908 (Lot 29 ), and Hobart, 1938 (Lot 30 ), were treated with much warmth from an appreciative audience. While the Venice picture had estimates of $200,000-300,000, the Tasmanian scene was expected to sell for slightly less, given its lower estimate of $180,000-220,000, perhaps due to its later vintage. However, the inherent charm and grandeur of the Tasmanian vista was enough to see both paintings sell for the exact same hammer price of $220,000.

Another double bill was represented by Rupert Bunny. A Word of Advice (1908) (Lot 31 ), given the large fan in the image, offered us a painting suggesting a somewhat balmy day, and it lead to blistering bidding ending at $290,000 hammer price, on estimates of $250,000-350,000.

Then A Provincial Town in France (1904) (Lot 32 ) depicting a most summery feel and sold at a cooler low estimate of $400,000.

Another European subject, A Lake Scene in Cumberland (Lot 34 ), painted 70 years earlier by John Glover, certainly came in from the cold to hit a scorching $115,000 on its modest $40,000-60,000 suggestion.

Art dealer Bob Lavigne just snook in to capture a new Australian record for Godfrey Miller’s Summer (1955-57) (Lot 42 ), a record that amazingly had been held for 18 years when Trees in Quarry sold in 2000 with Christies as part of the Harold E. Mertz collection for $180,000 hp. Lavigne paid $190,000 hammer price and $231,800 IBP to secure the picture just above the $180,000 low estimate.

Three Albert Tucker paintings were offered at Sotheby’s, including a smallish Intruder with Parrots, 1967 (Lot 59 ), with an equally small estimate of $10,000-15,000. These parrots were clearly of the tropical variety, as a searing $34,000 was achieved for this diminutive work with Kerry Stokes collection provenance.

It was the second time that Charles Blackman’s A Dream of Flowers (Lot 60 ) appeared at auction. In 2010, it sold also at Sotheby’s on $18,000-25,000 for $32,000 hammer price (or $38,400) including buyer’s premium. Yesterday, it was on offer again with $25,000-35,000 estimates, indicating very reasonable seller’s expectations. The dream took flight, and it sold for more than double the low estimate for $53,000.

Second-last but not least, Harold Septimus Power’s Portrait of a Young Woman with Two Spaniels (Lot 66 ), and with a saleroom notice for a different title The Blue Setter, was listed with a $15,000-20,000 estimate. The multitude of bidders set up a blistering pace for this portrait with a sophisticated 1920s English country atmosphere, quite atypical for Power, better known for his horses and plough scenes. After reaching $66,000, a $75,000 return bid followed straight away – however, it was not the expected knock-out blow which came from the $81,000 phone bid, four times the high estimate.

So what would Amanda Keller say of the sale? HOT.

Some claimed that this castle is the finest and grandest castle that Edward I ever built. The Conwy Castle has the most mesmerizing views from the battlements and its famed walled town within its grounds. Visitors can tour its great halls, private chapels, and royal chambers while getting around its winding medieval pathways. Its eight towers pile beside each other, making it look like a faceless guardian perched on the mountaintop. Even Thomas Telford can’t help but marvel at this castle that he even builds a suspension bridge to match the ambiance.

Caerphilly Castle

Built during the 13th century, Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in all of Britain. The English built this majestic castle locked on its water defenses that feature four siege engines and different arrays of delightful grounds that still has its very majestic ambiance. The castle is so amazing that the BBC TV’s adaptation of Merlin was filmed here. Covering about 30 acres of moats, ramparts, and islands, even Cromwell couldn’t destroy its pillars.

Powis Castle and Garden

Powis Castle has its share of deep history in Wales but its gardens almost surpassed its significance. The castle is famous for its French and Italian style gardens adorned with many varieties of plants and an orangery. Its garden boasts of a very artistic medieval deer park. It’s a perfect place to rest tired feet from all of those roaming inside its medieval galleries and lots of staircases.

Caernarvon Castle

Seven centuries after its completion, Caernarvon Castle remains as one of the most formidable fortresses in the entire European continent. Edward I sure was proud of his undertaking when he built this 13th-century castle on a former Roman fort. Because of its historical significance and its architectural beauty, it is listed as a World Heritage Site. Exhibitions rooms are the best which features different landmarks from all era of the history. Despite the fact it was built more than 700 years ago, the castle is still largely intact and its polygonal towers give it a more contemporary look. Kids love to roam its many rooms and enjoying a fun run at its spiral staircases.

1. Beachy Head & The Seven Sisters

A visit to Sussex County is not complete without a trip to Beachy Head and The Seven Sisters. This series of chalk cliff drops is the most iconic attraction of the area and provides the most spectacular views of the English Channel. This long stretch of cliffs is really a sight to behold, with lush grasslands and on a warm day, the ocean turns a stunning turquoise blue.

Within this huge tree collection, there are rare and endangered species as well as many historically important specimens. 14. Aldingbourne Country Centre

16. Nutbourne Winery & Vineyards

Wine connoisseurs will love visiting Nutbourne Winery & Vineyards, open from May to October every year. Nutbourne is a family-run boutique wine producer and they’re known for their award-winning still and sparkling wines. It’s all a part of the new English wine renaissance, and all wines are made from grapes grown on the estate. Open Tuesday to Friday (2pm-5pm) and Saturdays (11am-5pm).

17. Blackberry Farm

Farm days are so much fun for kids and Blackberry Farm promises excitement for all ages. The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and first public art gallery. In 1971, the charity was registered as an adoption agency, offering a specialist service to find adoptive families for the most vulnerable childcare. If I said, it was the fastest in her day, has incredible history, and smells of old fish, what would you say ? the Cutty Sark. Well done. 10 points for you. Grab your Oyster card, and jump on the boat there. That’s your day sorted then.

It’s never dull at The National Theatre. Check out the family events schedule, and discover the skills and secrets behind productions at the National Theatre: have a go at designing a costume; learn how our actors perform realistic fights on stage. That’s before you’ve even seen a ground breaking piece of drama (dahhhling).

You made that up, I don’t believe you. You must have been hanging out at the Discover Story Centrein Stratford then. The place where families, storytelling, and authors all come together in one gooey icing blob.

The RA (Royal Academy to us ruffians) is the best secret in town, when it comes to art workshops. It also is the best located museum for families, as you can skip over to Green Park for some fresh air, after exercising your brain cells at their latest exhibition.

Fancy yourself as the next Calvin and Hobbs artist? Then take the kids to a workshop at The Cartoon Museum in Bloomsbury please. Please tell me how it went, as we haven’t made it there yet, and we are keen for a mini review.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is right by Regent Street and Regents Park, and serves kids of 8+ well. They offer workshops, and family days. Keep an eye on their what’s on pages, as they offer interesting courses for younger ones in the holidays.

How about a free film at the BFI on the Southbank. They also run cracking weekend film sessions for families, workshops, holiday courses and it’s located next to The National Theatre. You’ll feel inspired hearing the thespian types discussing Rufus Norris’s Artistic Direction around you.

The Fulham Palace holds on tightly to over 1300 years of English history, and aims to become one of Great Britain’s most loved and inspiring historic houses and gardens. They have fun kids workshops, garden walks, and tours. Find out more here.

Do you like the idea of really fun free art, design, craft, and baking workshops for children and young people aged 2 – 16. Then head over to the Geffrye museum in Hackney please.

A visit to Dennis Severs House is both a breathtaking and an intimate portrait of the lives of a family of Huguenot silk-weavers from 1724 to the dawn of the 20th Century. It was Dennis Severs’ intention that as you enter his house it is as if you have passed through the surface of a painting, exploring with your senses and imagination a meticulously crafted 18th Century world. (At least you will have something to tell Grandma, other than about M&M world, on your holiday postcard).

Do you know any budding Knights in shining armour? If yes, get them down to one of the family events at Westminster Abbey pronto, before they are beheaded, and it’s all your fault.

Take a 40 second descent in the ArcelorMittal Orbit Slide, the world’s tallest and longest tunnel Slide as well as experiencing breathtaking views of London from two observation platforms. Book here.

Visit The National Portrait Gallery. With over 1,000 portraits of famous people to discover from the majestic portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I in the Tudor Galleries to the pop stars and artists in the Contemporary galleries – the National Portrait Gallery is a perfect place for all the family to visit.

All Muggles will love this one. How about a visit to The Harry Potter Shop in the Kings Cross Station, before you queue for your photo at platform 9 and 3/4? There are also Harry Potter walking tours, bus tours, private tours not forgetting the tremendous Warner Bros Experience and Tour in Hertfordshire.

Any kids who will ever take an English exam, really should at least take a look at, and even better join in with some family fun at William Shakespeare’s Globe in Borough.

The Wallace Collection, is one of those places that often appears on the ‘secret places to hang out in…’ lists of rather influential and fashionable London types. It might have something to do with the fact that it’s a stones throw from Marylebone and Selfridges, but also because it hosts very civilised drop in and draw sessions for kids during holidays, and at the weekends.

Adult and Kids alike always have a good time at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Their drop in craft sessions are brilliant, the museum shop is ace, and that’s before you’ve checked out the latest exhibitions, played with Punch and Judy, and the indoor sand pit, danced with a larger than life robot, and rocked on a horse.

Those high energy kids might want to see what is happening at The Exploration Society. They offer the best ever adventure days/weekends/ camps. You can choose from sailing, kayaking, mountain biking, and woodland adventures, and these are before you have seen what you can have for ‘main course’.

No child in Chelsea can survive their childhood without at least a weekend spent parading around the National Army Museum. It’s an institution for South West Londoners, and is especially popular with those who own small soldiers and officers.

Trapeze & Circus lovers could try a private class or summer workshop with x-professional trapeze artist Genevieve at her Circus Glory school in Primrose Hill. It’s a special kind of person that can hang up side down on a large lolly stick.

The British Library in Kings Cross hosts a FREE Family Programme that runs from July to September, 2017. We like South Asian Stories Friday 28 July, 2017 (12.00 – 13.30), it’s free, drop in and suitable for ages 5 – 11. This workshop is run in partnership with The Place and coincides with a free dance performance, 14.00 – 15.00, taking place outside on the Piazza. Everyone is welcome to watch.

Book tickets for family shows at the Underbelly Festival 2017, Southbank. For theatre and dance lovers, The Tap Dancing Mermaid (10 June) blends puppetry and dance to fantastical effect, and Metta Theatre’s Jungle Book (1-24 August) melds hip-hop dancing, spoken word and creative design to create a contemporary, urban, politically aware reinterpretation of Kipling’s classic.

ExpeRimental from the Royal Institution is a series of short films that make it fun, easy and cheap to do science at home with children aged 4 to 10. The films give you lots of ideas for kids’ activities that will help you explore the world around you, question and experiment together. They show you how to do the activity and how to make sure adults and children get the most out of it.

You can join the family orchestra and chorus at the Proms family orchestra and chorus. There are many workshops that allow you to play or sing alongside professional musicians, whatever your age or ability (suitable for ages 7-plus). Some sessions will be focussed around highlights from the 2017 Proms season and by Oklahoma!

There are lots of book-ish events happening across the UK at Foyles. You could start with a peek of mad crazy fun at the Adventures in Wonderland event on Sat 29th July, 2-3pm at the Charing Cross Road Foyles (free). It’s a preview of the theatre show that is happening at The Vaults, Waterloo.

Or try Maisy the Mouse Picnic on Thursday 3rd August 2017 1pm – 2pm Royal Festival Hall (Free). Meet Maisy the Mouse and enjoy stories, activities and some picnic treats. They will be serving sweet and savoury treats, you can take part in Maisy-themed activities and reading a selection of Maisy titles.

There is a new fish in town that wants to meet you. At the Natural History Museum, your place on the planet might feel different standing next to the remains of the largest animal that has lived on this planet. The skeleton of a blue whale is the star of their new exhibition Whales : Beneath the Surface. “More than 100 specimens from the Museum’s collection will be on display together for the first time, from parts of a colossal blue whale to a small harbour porpoise”. Musical theatre fans can check the latest list of all the best shows in town here, in an earlier post I wrote for the lovely people at MyBaba. We fully recommend 42nd Street, Matilda and Carole King the musical (which is about to end it’s West End run and go on tour) for the Mums.

I have put together a round up of some of the most popular Kids Theatre, Dance & Art Summer courses. Although many of these have limited places, and get booked up early, they also offer term time classes. If you have recommendations, or know of schools I can include, please let me know.

You might want to treat your Grandma to a really lovely afternoon tea, so here is a list of the Best Family Friendly Afternoon Teas in London, that might help you decide where to take her.

You could take a trip to a National Trust property. They own some of the best beaches in the land, 59 villages, 49 churches and a gold mine (The Dolaucothi Gold Mines). Their teams conserve butterflies, bats, wildlife and plants. It doesn’t stop there, they also own four coastal World Heritage Sites.

If you have a Saturday morning free, you can often grab an early morning movie for next to nothing at your local cinema. If you need a little help, here is a list of some of The Best Cinema Clubs for London Kids in town.

A great way to spend a morning or afternoon is to take a trip backstage around one of London’s many beautiful theatres. Not only will the tour tickets cost little more than a sandwich, you will get the chance to peek into the dressing rooms and tread the boards where many famous actors spend their time feeling sick with nerves.

Grab a view from The Shard. Check : ‘the weather’. Check : ‘your footwear’. Check ‘you are definitely not Acrophobic’. Head over to The Shard at London Bridge and fly up to floors 68, 69 and 72, and you will be at almost twice the height of any other viewing platform in the capital.

Take a cycle ride around the Capital. If you’re keen there are superhighway route maps you can follow. I would try out the Wandsworth to Milbank one. Starting at the legendary ‘The Alma’ pubbang opposite Wandsworth Rail station with a pint of something cold, and a decent lunch. Then hire your bikes, pedal through Battersea, across Chelsea Bridge, and end up at Millbank. You get 5 points for every civil servant you spot, 75 points for any lost soldiers on horseback looking for sugar lumps, and 150 points if you pull up next to Prince William ‘undercover’ on his motor bike!

It would be remiss of me not to mention that over the Summer the gates of Buckingham Palace are opened to the public for visits. You can buy tickets for admission to The State Rooms, Buckingham Palace, The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace and the Royal Mews. English Heritage champions history, and the historic places that make our nation quite a good one. With every visit (and entrance fee) to an English Heritage site, of which there is an incredible list of 400 across the country to choose from, you will be protecting the future of our heritage, so for that reason, amongst many, we would like to give each and every one of the English Heritage team a proper round of applause.

Let’s go for a DIY craft at home today. All you need is a smooth floor and+ A balloon+ Some glue (strong enough to glue plastic. How about a picnic in one of the capitals secret gardens? You could start with Inner Temple, one of London’s four Inns of Court.
