heya!! Was wondering if you had any tips for writing characters going through withdrawal? Sorry if it's a weirder ask, but would a symptoms list be possible? Thanks in advance!!
Writing Notes: Withdrawal Symptoms
Withdrawal - Substance-specific physiologic effects, symptoms, and behavioral changes that are caused by stopping or reducing the intake of a substance.
It is a pharmacologic symptom in which untoward physical effects occur when the drug is stopped or when it is counteracted by a specific antagonist
Substance Withdrawal - A syndrome that develops after cessation of prolonged, heavy consumption of a substance.
Symptoms vary by substance but generally include:
physiological,
behavioral, and
cognitive manifestations, such as nausea and vomiting, insomnia, mood alterations, and anxiety.
DSM–IV–TR identifies 6 drug classes associated with withdrawal:
alcohol,
amphetamines,
cocaine,
nicotine,
opioids, and sedatives,
hypnotics, or anxiolytics.
DSM–5 and DSM-5-TR list
tobacco in place of nicotine and
further identify caffeine and
cannabis as being associated with a withdrawal syndrome.
To be classified as a substance-withdrawal disorder,
the withdrawal syndrome must cause the patient significant distress and/or impair functioning (e.g., social, occupational).
Most patients with withdrawal recognize that readministering the substance will reduce their symptoms.
ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL
Alcohol Withdrawal - Symptoms that may occur when a person who has been drinking too much alcohol on a regular basis suddenly stops drinking alcohol.
These symptoms tend to occur within 8 hours after the last drink, but can occur days later. Symptoms tend to peak by 24 to 72 hours, but may go on for weeks.
Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:
Anxiety or nervousness
Depression
Fatigue
Irritability
Jumpiness or shakiness
Mood swings
Nightmares
Not thinking clearly
Other alcohol withdrawal symptoms may include:
Sweating, clammy skin
Enlarged (dilated) pupils
Headache
Insomnia (sleeping difficulty)
Loss of appetite
Nausea and vomiting
Pallor
Rapid heart rate
Sweating, clammy skin
Tremor of the hands or other body parts
Delirium Tremens - a severe form of alcohol withdrawal. It can cause:
Agitation, irritability
Sudden, severe confusion (delirium)
Fever
Seeing or feeling things that aren't there (hallucinations)
Seizures
A continuum of symptoms and signs of central nervous system (including autonomic) hyperactivity may accompany cessation of alcohol intake.
A mild alcohol withdrawal syndrome includes tremor, weakness, headache, sweating, hyperreflexia, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Tachycardia may be present and blood pressure can be slightly elevated. Symptoms usually begin within about 6 hours of cessation. Some patients have generalized tonic-clonic seizures (called alcohol-related seizure, or rum fits) but usually not > 2 in short succession. Seizures generally occur 6 to 48 hours after cessation of alcohol.
Alcoholic hallucinosis (hallucinations without other impairment of consciousness) follows abrupt cessation from prolonged, excessive alcohol use, usually within 12 to 24 hours. Hallucinations are typically visual. Symptoms may also include auditory illusions and hallucinations that frequently are accusatory and threatening; patients are usually apprehensive and may be terrified by the hallucinations and by vivid, frightening dreams. Alcoholic hallucinosis may resemble schizophrenia, although thought is usually not disordered and the history is not typical of schizophrenia. Symptoms do not resemble the delirious state of an acute organic brain syndrome as much as does delirium tremens (DT) or other pathologic reactions associated with withdrawal. Consciousness remains clear, and the signs of autonomic lability that occur in DT are usually absent. When hallucinosis occurs, it usually precedes DT and is transient.
Delirium tremens usually begins 48 to 72 hours after alcohol withdrawal; anxiety attacks, increasing confusion, poor sleep (with frightening dreams or nocturnal illusions), profuse sweating, and severe depression also occur. Fleeting hallucinations that arouse restlessness, fear, and even terror are common. Typical of the initial delirious, confused, and disoriented state is a return to a habitual activity; eg, patients frequently imagine that they are back at work and attempt to do some related activity.
OPIOID WITHDRAWAL
Opiates or opioids are drugs used to treat pain.
Opiates are derived from plants and
opioids are synthetic drugs that have the same actions as opiates.
The term narcotic refers to either type of drug.
If you stop or cut back on any of these drugs after heavy use for a few weeks or more, you will have a number of symptoms. This is called withdrawal.
Early symptoms of opiate and opioid withdrawal include:
Agitation
Anxiety
Muscle aches
Increased tearing
Insomnia
Runny nose
Sweating
Yawning
Late symptoms of opiate and opioid withdrawal include:
Abdominal cramping
Diarrhea
Dilated pupils
Goosebumps
Nausea
Vomiting
These symptoms are very uncomfortable but are not life threatening. Symptoms usually start within 12 hours of last heroin usage and within 30 hours of last methadone exposure.
Withdrawal from opioids can cause:
Sweating
Chills
Anxiety
Agitation
Muscle aches
Insomnia
Abdominal cramping
Nausea
Vomiting
Withdrawal symptoms may increase in severity over 72 hours before beginning to ease. Unlike withdrawal from other drugs such as alcohol or benzodiazepines, withdrawal from opioids is uncomfortable but rarely life-threatening.
The opioid withdrawal syndrome usually includes symptoms and signs of central nervous system hyperactivity.
Onset and duration of the syndrome depend on the specific drug and its half-life.
Symptoms may appear as early as 4 hours after the last dose of heroin, peak within 48 to 72 hours, and subside after about a week.
Anxiety and a craving for the drug are followed by increased resting respiratory rate (> 16 breaths/minute), usually with diaphoresis, yawning, lacrimation, rhinorrhea, mydriasis, and stomach cramps. Later, piloerection (gooseflesh), tremors, muscle twitching, tachycardia, hypertension, fever and chills, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may develop.
Opioid withdrawal does not cause fever, seizures, or altered mental status. Although it may be distressingly symptomatic, opioid withdrawal is not fatal.
The withdrawal syndrome in people who were taking methadone (which has a long half-life) develops more slowly and may be less acutely severe than heroin withdrawal, although users may describe it as worse.
Even after the withdrawal syndrome remits, lethargy, malaise, anxiety, and disturbed sleep may persist up to several months.
Drug craving may persist for years.
NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL
Common Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms
Having urges or cravings to smoke
Feeling irritated, grouchy, or upset
Feeling jumpy and restless
Having a hard time concentrating
Having trouble sleeping
Feeling hungrier or gaining weight
Feeling anxious, sad, or depressed
Trying to quit smoking feels different for each person, but almost everyone will have some symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. When you stop, your body and brain have to get used to not having nicotine. This can be uncomfortable, but nicotine withdrawal can’t hurt you – unless you give in and have a cigarette. Over time, withdrawal symptoms will fade as long as you stay smoke-free.
CAFFEINE WITHDRAWAL
Caffeine intoxication and caffeine withdrawal are included in DSM-5-TR.
Caffeine use disorder, however, is in the section of DSM-5-TR for conditions requiring further research. While there is evidence to support this as a disorder, experts conclude it is not yet clear to what extent it is a clinically significant disorder.
Some signs of caffeine withdrawal include:
impaired behavioral and cognitive performance,
decreased or increased blood pressure,
decreased motor activity,
increased heart rate,
hand tremor,
increased diuresis,
skin flushing,
flu-like symptoms,
nausea/vomiting,
constipation,
muscle stiffness,
joint pains, and
abdominal pain.

Hi, it's alright. This is an interesting topic and quite important to portray in literature and other media. The symptoms depend on which substance/s your character has been using, but each person may also have different withdrawal symptoms. You can find more details in the sources. Hope this helps with your writing!

You are my favorite Andorian poster, no doubt. I was wondering..... what do you think education/parenting and overall childcare are like for Andorians? how do you think all four parental figures would take care of them? Would it be some big co-parenting thing, or would they not all be involved? Do Andorian kids get bounced around their thaan, shen, chan, and zhen like hot potatoes? XD
Aww, thank you, Anon! <3
This ended up being a little on the longer side, so I'm gonna put a read-more cut here.
So, education is standardized across Andorian territory. All children from age 4 to 18 are required to attend school starting with partial days in what is effectively kindergarten for socialization and motor skill development and eventually progressing to 12 hour days, plus about and hour and thirty minutes' worth of breaks for meals broken up amongst those schooling hours. (Remember, Andorians function on a 36 hour day, not a 24 hour one. A twelve hour period is only a third of the day, for them.) This gives parents a reasonable amount of time and space to work or look after younger children as needed.
Andorian education is a little more involved than what Terrans are typically used to. Even from as young as four years old, Andorians are being assessed for various roles that they might best be suited to for future careers. Children who display aptitudes early on are encouraged to pursue them, with resources readily provided and extracurricular opportunities presented. Children who are late bloomers in this department are encouraged to explore as many skills and creative outlets as possible to help them find an aspiration. This is all in addition to the basic, standard education all Andorians receive regardless of aspirations - or lack thereof.
Furthermore, Andorian schools sport robust extracurricular programs ranging from book clubs to martial arts to cooking classes, and all students are required to pick at least one to participate in.
Another quirk of the Andorian system is that there is very little in the way of homework. Work assignments are intended to be completed in class, as it's strongly believed that failure to understand the course material and then taking work home to cement those misunderstandings can only be detrimental to a student. It is for this reason that Andorian classes are divided into two parts - lecture during which students go over the course material with their instructors and ask questions, and the lab portion, during which students work alone or in groups to complete coursework with the instructor on hand to assist. Many Terrans note that these classes resemble university-style courses, and in fact Andorian universities continue with this format, since there's no reason to 'fix' something that is already working well.
For parents who need to work longer shifts and are unable to personally look after their children during the gap between their school hours and the parents' work shift, family is usually the first resource utilized. Andorian Clans, or keths, are deeply invested in looking after the youngest generation and there is rarely a shortage or relatives to mind the kids for at least part of the day. Many teenagers are also recruited to help out with younger cousins, as Andorians feel that it helps reinforce extended familial bonds. Additionally, the Clan Leader (and spouses) generally make a point of being available whenever they can to take over childcare. This has a number of purposes, in that it allows the Clan Leader to be enmeshed in the goings on of the entire Clan while providing a valuable service, and it also allows the Clan Leader to form familial bonds with the children of the Clan.
Sometimes, the parents can arrange their work schedules so that every parent takes a day to spend with the children and then swaps with the next parent the following day, and the next the following day, and so on. It becomes a rotating schedule of sorts. Not every job can accommodate this, but it's common enough amongst Andorians.
The prospect of handing one's children off to total strangers is appalling to Andorians, who are in turn horrified to find that this is a common Terran practice. One's children are the future of the Clan - thus, only the Clan can be trusted with their safety. I believe I touched upon this in another post, so I'll leave it there. As for who actually does the childrearing... that depends. Some quads are all enthusiastic parents, and all of them take very active roles in their children's upbringing and homelife. Sometimes, only half the quad wishes to have children at that point in time, and the other bonded couple ends up being more tangential to the children's lives until the kids grow up enough to hold a conversation with. Usually, in this latter example's case, the other bonded couple will provide support, handle chores and such, but be less active in the actual childrearing aspects of things unless the children directly engage them.
Other times, children are desired but most, if not all, of the quad have extremely demanding jobs and cannot simply step away for any real length of time. Career-focused parents like the aforementioned are a little controversial amongst Andorians, as some feel that it is unfair to the children to have so little access to their parents, but society and the demands it places upon adult Andorians in general are slowly softening to the idea. To be honest, though, these are only some examples of possibilities within a quad. Andorians are as varied as Humans, after all, and every permutation under the sun can exist for how quads arrange themselves around children and childcare.
In Shral's case, for example, all of his parents were involved but the parents actively serving in the Imperial Guard were not always able to step away to spend time with the kids.
Meanwhile, Thelen's parents were very much career-focused, and Thelen spent a great deal of time with his cousins and extended family during his childhood.
Vrath, by comparison, was doted on by all four of her parents full-time, to the point where Vrath's birth-mother would bring the baby to work with her rather than leave her behind.
I think that about covers it! Hope this answered everything!

What to Expect During a Full Health Checkup: 7 Must-Know Insights to Prepare Yourself
Wondering what really happens during a full health checkup? You're not alone. Millions of people delay routine health screenings simply because they don’t know what to expect. But skipping this crucial step in preventive healthcare can cost you your well-being—and your wallet. A full health checkup is your early warning system. It uncovers silent threats like diabetes, heart disease, thyroid issues, and more before symptoms even appear.
In this guide, we break down what to expect during a full health checkup, answer frequently asked questions, and help you walk into your next appointment feeling informed, confident, and in control of your health.
Tumblr media
1. What Is a Full Health Checkup?
A full health checkup is a comprehensive package of tests that evaluate the overall functioning of your body. It typically includes blood tests, urine analysis, imaging (like X-rays or ultrasounds), ECG, and doctor consultation. The goal is simple: detect potential health issues early, even when no symptoms are present.
Most full body checkups are tailored based on age, gender, medical history, and lifestyle. For example, a 30-year-old office-goer might need a different panel than a 50-year-old diabetic patient.
2. Why Is a Full Body Health Checkup Important?
According to the World Health Organization, 60% of adult deaths in India are linked to chronic non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and cancer. Most of these conditions are preventable or manageable when detected early through regular checkups.
Benefits include:
Early diagnosis of silent diseases
Reduced risk of complications
Cost savings in the long run
Peace of mind with preventive healthcare
3. What Tests Are Included in a Full Health Checkup?
While the exact tests vary by provider and package, here are common tests included in a standard full body checkup:
Complete Blood Count (CBC): Detects infections, anemia, and other blood disorders
Liver Function Test (LFT): Evaluates liver enzymes, bilirubin levels
Kidney Function Test (KFT): Monitors creatinine, urea levels
Lipid Profile: Measures cholesterol and triglycerides
Blood Sugar Test: Identifies risk of diabetes
Thyroid Profile: Checks for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
Urine Routine Analysis: Detects infections or kidney issues
ECG: Monitors heart rhythm and detects abnormalities
Chest X-ray or Abdominal Ultrasound: Visual scan of organs
Vitamin D and B12 Tests: Identifies deficiencies
Some advanced packages also include cancer markers, hormone levels, and cardiac stress tests.
4. How Should You Prepare Before a Health Checkup?
Preparation is key to accurate results. Follow these essential guidelines:
Fasting: Avoid food or drink (except water) for 10–12 hours before blood tests
Medication: Inform the lab about ongoing medication as it can influence results
Hydration: Drink plenty of water to ensure smooth blood and urine sample collection
Rest: Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise 24 hours before the test
Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes for comfort during ECGs or imaging
5. What Happens on the Day of the Checkup?
Here’s a typical flow:
Registration and Documentation
Vital Signs Measurement – blood pressure, pulse, weight, height
Sample Collection – blood and urine
Imaging Tests – X-ray, ultrasound if included
ECG and Physical Examination
Doctor Consultation – assessment and recommendations based on reports
The entire process usually takes 2–3 hours.
6. Common FAQs
Q: Is it painful? No, apart from a small prick during the blood sample collection, it’s non-invasive and painless.
Q: Do I need to visit a hospital? Not necessarily. Many diagnostic labs offer home sample collection and online reports, making the process convenient.
Q: How often should I get a checkup? Annually, especially after the age of 30. For those with chronic conditions, more frequent tests may be necessary.
Q: Will my insurance cover it? Some health insurance plans offer wellness benefits that cover annual checkups. Check with your provider.
Q: Are the results reliable? Yes, provided you choose NABL-accredited labs or reputed diagnostic centers.
7. Choosing the Right Lab or Provider
Not all diagnostic centers are created equal. When booking your full health checkup, prioritize:
Accreditation (NABL, ISO)
Transparent pricing
Digital access to reports
Same-day sample collection or walk-in convenience

The Science Behind How Long Nootropics Last in Your System
Nootropics have gained tremendous popularity for their cognitive-enhancing properties, but understanding their duration in the body is crucial for optimal usage. Wholistic Research has compiled comprehensive information about how long these brain-boosting compounds remain effective and detectable in your system.
How Nootropics Function in Your Body
Nootropics work by influencing brain neurotransmitters, primarily dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine. These chemical messengers are responsible for memory formation, focus enhancement, mood regulation, and overall cognitive performance. By increasing neurotransmitter availability, nootropics improve mental functions while simultaneously protecting neurons from oxidative damage.
Different compounds target specific neurotransmitter systems. For example, Vyvamind enhances dopamine and norepinephrine activity, while Lion's Mane Mushroom boosts nerve growth factor production for neuroprotection. This diversity in mechanisms explains why duration varies significantly between different nootropics.
Onset Timeframes: How Quickly Do Nootropics Work?
Nootropics begin working between 15 minutes and several weeks after consumption, falling into three distinct categories:
Fast-acting nootropics (15-60 minutes): Stimulant-based compounds like Vyvamind provide rapid cognitive enhancement
Moderate-onset nootropics (1-3 hours): Substances like Modafinil and comprehensive stacks such as Mind Lab Pro need more time to fully activate
Cumulative-effect nootropics (days to weeks): Natural compounds like Lion's Mane Mushroom build up gradually with consistent daily use
Several factors affect how quickly you'll experience effects, including whether you take them on an empty stomach, your individual metabolism, the specific formulation, and whether you're combining multiple nootropics in a stack.
Duration Factors: How Long Effects Last
The half-life of a nootropic is the primary determinant of how long its effects last. This measurement indicates how long it takes for the concentration of a substance in your body to decrease by 50%. For example, Modafinil has a half-life of 12-15 hours, resulting in effects lasting 25-30 hours, while Lion's Mane Mushroom has a much shorter half-life of 30-40 minutes, with effects lasting only 1-3 hours.
Other significant factors influencing duration include:
Metabolic rate: Fast metabolizers process nootropics up to 50% quicker than slow metabolizers
Dosage: Higher doses generally extend the duration of effects
Body weight: Heavier individuals may experience different duration patterns
Age: Older users often metabolize compounds more slowly
Tolerance: Regular use can lead to diminished effects over time
Elimination and Detection: How Long Nootropics Stay in Your System
Nootropics typically remain in your system for approximately five half-lives, which can range from 24 hours to several days depending on the specific compound. The elimination half-life—the time it takes for half the substance to be eliminated from your body—provides a good estimate of detection windows.
After one half-life, 50% of the substance is eliminated; after two half-lives, 75% is gone; and so on. Complete clearance typically occurs after five half-lives, though trace amounts may remain longer.
Regarding drug testing, most standard tests don't specifically screen for nootropics. Routine urine, blood, and hair tests typically target common illicit substances rather than cognitive enhancers. However, specific testing for particular nootropics is possible if there's a reason to do so, such as in athletic doping cases.
Optimizing Your Nootropic Experience
Understanding duration factors helps you optimize your nootropic regimen. For instance, if you need cognitive enhancement for a specific event or time period, choosing a nootropic with an appropriate half-life ensures effects when needed without lingering too long afterward.
Consistency is often more important than seeking immediate effects, especially with cumulative-effect nootropics. Many of the most beneficial cognitive enhancers work subtly, with benefits building gradually rather than producing an obvious immediate impact.
Remember that individual responses vary significantly, so what works for others may not work identically for you. Starting with lower doses and carefully observing effects helps you determine your personal optimal usage pattern.
Conclusion
The duration of nootropic effects varies widely based on the specific compound and individual factors. Fast-acting nootropics like Vyvamind work quickly but last shorter periods, while compounds like Modafinil provide extended cognitive enhancement. Understanding these duration profiles helps you make informed decisions about which nootropics best suit your specific cognitive enhancement goals.

Bilastine: Uses, Interactions, and Mechanism of Action
Bilastine: Uses, Interactions, and Mechanism of Action
In the crowded world of antihistamines, Bilastine stands out as a modern, non-sedating agent used for the treatment of allergic conditions. Approved in over 100 countries, this second-generation antihistamine is gaining popularity due to its favorable safety profile and effectiveness in relieving allergic symptoms without causing drowsiness. This article explores the key aspects of Bilastine — its uses, interactions, and mechanism of action.
What is Bilastine?
Bilastine is a second-generation H1-antihistamine used to treat allergic rhinitis (both seasonal and perennial) and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It is known for its selectivity, long duration of action, and lack of sedation, making it a preferred choice in daily allergy management.
Uses of Bilastine
Bilastine is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with:
1. Allergic Rhinitis
Sneezing
Nasal congestion
Runny nose
Itchy eyes and nose
2. Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
Persistent hives
Redness
Itching and swelling
Key Benefits:
Works within 1 hour of administration
Provides relief for up to 24 hours
Non-sedating and does not impair driving or cognitive function
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine works by selectively blocking peripheral H1 histamine receptors, which are responsible for allergic symptoms like swelling, redness, and itchiness. When allergens trigger the immune system, histamine is released from mast cells. Bilastine binds to H1 receptors, preventing histamine from exerting its effects.
Pharmacological Highlights:
Does not cross the blood-brain barrier significantly, reducing the risk of sedation.
No significant anticholinergic effects, which are commonly seen with first-generation antihistamines.
Drug Interactions
Although Bilastine has a relatively low interaction potential, certain substances may affect its absorption and efficacy:
1. Food and Fruit Juice
Bilastine’s absorption is reduced when taken with food, especially fruit juices like grapefruit, apple, or orange juice.
Recommendation: Take Bilastine on an empty stomach — either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal or juice.
2. P-glycoprotein Inhibitors
Drugs like ketoconazole, erythromycin, diltiazem, and cyclosporine may increase plasma concentrations of Bilastine by inhibiting its transport.
Clinical Impact: Usually not significant in healthy individuals, but caution is advised in people with renal impairment.
3. CNS Depressants
Although Bilastine is non-sedating, concurrent use with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants may rarely cause drowsiness.
Dosing and Administration
Adults and children ≥12 years: 20 mg once daily
Should be taken on an empty stomach
Not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment if co-administered with P-gp inhibitors
Safety and Side Effects
Bilastine is generally well-tolerated. Common side effects (typically mild) may include:
Headache
Dizziness
Abdominal pain
Drowsiness (rare)
It does not significantly affect the heart (no QT prolongation), liver, or kidneys in healthy individuals.
Conclusion
Bilastine offers effective allergy relief with minimal side effects, positioning itself as a reliable option for patients seeking a non-drowsy antihistamine. Its once-daily dosing, rapid onset, and long-lasting action make it particularly convenient for individuals managing chronic allergic conditions.
Whether you're dealing with seasonal allergies or chronic hives, Bilastine is a modern antihistamine worth considering — provided it’s taken correctly and with awareness of potential interactions.

Using Lidocaine Patches for Post-Herpetic Neuralgia
Tumblr media
Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful condition that can develop after a shingles outbreak, especially in older adults. It is caused by nerve damage from the varicella-zoster virus, which continues to cause persistent, burning, or stabbing pain long after the rash has healed. Managing PHN can be challenging, as the pain often resists conventional treatments. One effective, targeted solution that has gained recognition in clinical practice is the use of lidocaine patches.
Understanding How Lidocaine Patches Work
Lidocaine pain patches contain a local anesthetic that numbs the area where the patch is applied. They work by blocking sodium channels in peripheral nerves, which are responsible for transmitting pain signals to the brain. In the case of PHN, the affected nerves have become overly sensitive due to viral damage. By applying a lidocaine patch directly to the painful area, the overactive nerve activity is quieted, resulting in significant pain relief.
This targeted mode of action is particularly important in PHN, where the pain is usually confined to a specific part of the body, often on one side of the chest or face. Because lidocaine works locally, it provides relief exactly where it's needed, without affecting the rest of the body.
Advantages Of Systemic Medications
Many patients with PHN are older adults who may already be managing multiple health conditions and taking several medications. Systemic treatments for nerve pain, such as antidepressants or anticonvulsants, can cause dizziness, sedation, or gastrointestinal side effects that may not be well tolerated. Opioids, while sometimes prescribed, carry risks of dependency and sedation. In contrast, lidocaine patches offer pain relief with minimal systemic absorption, making them a safer and more manageable option for long-term use.
Application Guidelines
Lidocaine patches are typically applied once daily to the area where PHN pain is most intense. The standard recommendation is to wear the patch for up to 12 hours in 24 hours. After removal, a 12-hour patch-free interval is advised to minimize the risk of skin irritation and systemic absorption. The patches should be applied to clean, dry, and intact skin, and patients should avoid using heat sources like heating pads over the patch, as this can increase lidocaine absorption and potential side effects.
While the patch is in place, most patients begin to feel a numbing effect within a few hours, with pain relief lasting throughout wear. This makes the lidocaine patch an effective tool for maintaining daily function and improving the quality of life in those with PHN.
Conclusion
Lidocaine patches offer a practical and well-tolerated solution for managing post-herpetic neuralgia. Their localized effect, minimal side effects, and non-addictive nature make them especially suitable for older adults or individuals with multiple health conditions. For patients struggling with the persistent pain of PHN, lidocaine patches can be a vital part of an effective pain management plan. Always consult a healthcare provider to determine if this treatment is appropriate for your specific condition.

Allium schoenoprasum Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are among my favorite herbs to grow, second only to lavender. If you have yet to include this beloved herb in your garden, you are missing out on one of the most rewarding plants to grow – ever. I’m not exaggerating. These hardy perennials are very easy to cultivate and are ideal for those who are just starting out with herb gardening. We link to vendors to help you find relevant products. If you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. Chives are also ornamental, the pretty flowers attracting a plethora of butterflies and other beneficial insects – which makes them ideal for companion planting. Functional and beautiful, I really can’t say enough about chives. In this guide, I’ll cover how to grow these flavorful herbs. Here’s what’s ahead: A. schoenoprasum is a member of the onion (or Alliaceae) family, native to Asia and Europe, where the plant has been used medicinally for centuries. There is debate as to whether the species is also native to North America, or merely naturalized here. Quick Look Common name(s): Chives Plant type: Perennial herb Hardiness (USDA Zone): 3-10 Native to: Asia, Europe Bloom time / season: Summer Exposure: Full to part sun Soil type: Fertile, organically-rich, well draining Soil pH: 6.0-7.0, slightly acidic to neutral Time to maturity: 60 days Spacing: 8-10 inches Planting depth: 1/4 inch (seeds), same depth as root system (transplants) Mature size: 12 inches wide x 12-24 inches high Water Needs: Moderate Taxonomy Order: Asparagales Family: Amaryllidaceae Genus: Allium Species: Schoenoprasum These small plants form bulbous roots, growing in clumps which can easily be divided every two to four years. Reaching heights between 12 and 24 inches, individual plants are low-growing and compact, usually no more than 12 inches wide. Their narrow, hollow leaves are bright green, and striking purple rounded flowers appear in May or June. With a mild onion-like flavor, chives are ideal for use on omelets, salads, pizza, baked potatoes, and so much more. The flowers are also edible – you can add them to salads as a pretty, tasty garnish. Plus they make attractive additions to cut flower arrangements. Chives are hardy in Zones 3 to 10 and can be overwintered indoors in colder areas. This herb makes an excellent companion to a variety of vegetables and herbs, from parsley and rhubarb to squash and nightshades, like eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. Now that you’re better acquainted, it’s time to get growing! How to Grow Widespread throughout North America, chives are adaptable to most garden conditions. But for the healthiest and most productive plants, you’ll want to keep the following in mind: Light If possible, choose a site in full sun, one that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. They will do fine in partial sun as well if that’s all you have available – in my experience they can tolerate as few as four hours of direct sunshine. Soil Chives love fertile, organically-rich, well-draining soil with a pH of between 6.0 and 7.0. To encourage robust growth throughout the season, add organic compost to the soil at the time of planting. Keep in mind that root rot is possible if soil is especially poor draining. Fertilizing It’s always a good idea to conduct a soil test before adding any fertilizer. You can use a mild, balanced fertilizer, with an NPK ratio of 4-4-4 or similar at planting time and once in the spring. A top dressing with compost is usually enough unless your soil is very depleted. Water Water new transplants and seedlings regularly in the absence of rain. When they are established, chives can be quite drought-tolerant, but for best results, keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. During the heat of summer be especially vigilant about watering, if you want the most flavorful herbs with high yields. If you are growing your chives in containers, be aware that the soil in pots typically dries out faster than in the ground and they may need to be watered more frequently. Where to Buy In addition to the common variety, North American gardeners may come across garlic chives (A. tuberosum), giant Siberian chives (A. ledebourianum), and Siberian garlic chives (A. nutans). Each of these species has a different flavor. Chives A. schoenoprasum seeds are available from High Mowing Seeds. For something a little different, A. tuberosum aka garlic chives seeds are available from True Leaf Market. Garlic Chive Seeds This species produces attractive white blooms. You can learn more about garlic chives here. Maintenance If you’re primarily growing chives to use in the kitchen, consider cutting off flower buds before they bloom. Doing this will encourage more vigorous growth. Additionally, by not allowing flowers to go to seed, you will keep chives from spreading into areas of your garden where they aren’t wanted. Deadheading, the process of removing spent blooms, will help to encourage new flowers, if that is what you prefer. Dividing plants every two to four years helps to promote healthy growth. Generally, the best time to divide is in late winter to early spring. You can also divide the clumps in early fall, just be sure to give plants enough time to become established before the first frost. Mulch Mulch with compost, wood chips, or pine straw to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and add additional organic matter to the soil. Winter Care To overwinter, you can dig up or divide existing plants and pot them up in small containers. You can grow them on a south-facing windowsill through the winter, and plant out again in the spring. Another option for overwintering is to plant them in a container initially. When temperatures start dropping, move the container indoors. Propagation Propagating chives is very easy. You can choose to start from seed or if you or a friend have an existing clump, you can propagate them by division. From Seed If you choose to sow seeds it’s best to start them indoors eight to 10 weeks before the last spring frost. You can also direct sow seeds outdoors as soon as the soil is workable. Keep in mind if you direct sow outdoors, you may not experience much of a harvest or bloom until the following year, when plants have a chance to become established. You can learn more about how to start chives from seed here. By Division To divide an existing clump, water the plants ahead of time. Cut the leaves back to just a few inches above the ground. Use a pitchfork to dig up the clump, and lightly tap the roots on the ground to break up the root ball a bit. Then simply pull the root ball apart to create smaller clumps. Don’t worry too much about damaging or ripping the roots, chives are tough. Hold back on harvesting newly divided plants for a few weeks, or until they are established. Transplanting Whether you have grown your own seedlings or purchased nursery starts, be sure to harden off your young plants before putting them in the ground. Prepare your soil by loosening it to about six inches down, amend with compost, and add a little grit to improve drainage if necessary. Dig holes the same size as the containers your plants are currently growing in, remove the plant from the pot, setting it in the hole. Backfill with soil and water in well. If you plant your chives in a group, space them eight to 10 inches apart, to allow them to fill in and form a clump. This works well if you want to create a formal edge or border. If you prefer seeing some mulch in between your plants or are planting them within a cottage style garden, space them a minimum of one foot away from other plants. Managing Pests and Disease Chives are generally resilient and low-maintenance, which is part of their charm. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely immune to pest and disease problems. Let’s take a look at the most common issues you might encounter and how to handle them. Pests Though deer, rabbits, and other herbivores tend to give chives a pass thanks to their strong oniony scent, insects aren’t always deterred. Aphids Aphids are the most common culprit. These tiny, soft-bodied pests congregate on the foliage, feeding on sap and causing yellowing or curling. You might also spot the sticky residue they leave behind, called honeydew, which can attract sooty mold. A strong spray of water from the hose can knock them off, or you can use insecticidal soap as needed. Learn more about dealing with aphids here. Onion Maggots Onion maggots (Delia antiqua), while more common in larger allium crops like onions and shallots, may occasionally attack chives. The larvae burrow into the roots, leading to yellowing leaves and stunted growth. Floating row covers can help keep the adult flies from laying eggs. Thrips Thrips can also target your herbs, especially in dry weather. These slender insects leave silver streaks or speckled damage on the foliage as they feed. Neem oil is an effective treatment for light infestations. Learn more about how to manage thrips here. Disease These herbs don’t suffer from a long list of diseases, but a few fungal pathogens can become an issue in the right – or wrong – conditions. Downy mildew is one of the primary concerns. This disease is caused by fungus-like pathogens called oomycetes and they thrive in cool, damp environments. Symptoms include grayish patches on the leaves. You might also see the tips start to brown and die back. Rust is another fungal foe. It shows up as small orange or brown pustules on the foliage, weakening the plant over time. Remove and dispose of infected foliage as you see it. Avoid working among the plants when they’re wet, as this can spread spores. Finally, Botrytis, also known as gray mold, may develop if chives are overcrowded, growing in poorly draining soil, or exposed to prolonged moisture. This fuzzy, gray growth typically starts on older or damaged leaves. Cut out affected parts and give your plants a bit more breathing room. Harvesting Harvesting in the early morning is preferred, before the heat from the sun dehydrates the leaves. To harvest, wrap your hand around a clump of leaves and cut with clean, sharp scissors or a knife a couple of inches above the crown. Leaving some green at the base of the plant allows it to regenerate. I like to store newly harvested leaves in water to keep them firm and fresh. Fill a glass with a couple of inches of water, make a fresh cut at the base of the leaves, and stand them upright in the glass. Replace the water regularly – daily if needed. Another great way to store chives is wrapped in a damp paper towel and placed in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge. The leaves can be dried or frozen, but they lose a lot of flavor this way and are best eaten fresh. Cooking Ideas Chives are versatile in the kitchen, and can be used in a variety of different dishes from omelets to salads, and to add flavor to quiches. Chopped up in cottage cheese or as a garnish for egg salad, a sprinkle of chives adds flavor to so many recipes. They are a classic pairing with potatoes, and our sister site, Foodal, has a wonderful recipe for German potato salad which features chives as well as gherkin pickles and their juice. If you enjoy baking, this recipe for sourdough biscuits with cheese and chives, also on Foodal, is sure to be a hit.
