Shirley Murdock (born May 22, 1957) is a R&B singer-songwriter, who is known for her hit single “As We Lay” and for her vocals on Zapp and Roger’s hit single “Computer Love”. Her lead vocal special guest appearance with Smooth Jazz artist Ben Tankard, climbed to #1 Gospel and #20 on Billboard Top 200 on WOW Gospel 2006 and is certified Gold. Their collaboration of the Lionel Richie song “Jesus Is Love” is one of the most played songs on Sirius XM Radio's gospel channel for eight years since its initial release.

She started out singing gospel music in her native Toledo. Singer/musician Roger Troutman hired her as a backing vocalist for his family’s band Zapp, which had several hits on Warner Bros. Based on this success, Troutman began recording tracks with her and lead singer Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players, among others, at his Dayton-based recording studio, Troutman Sound Labs. She and Troutman’s first charted single was a Warner Bros. single issued as Roger (featuring Shirley Murdock), “Girl, Cut It Out”, which charted at #79 R&B in early 1985.

Murdock released “No More”, which made it to #24 R&B. Her signature hit, “As We Lay”. The tender, melancholy ballad made it to the R&B Top Ten in 1986 and peaked at #23 pop and #21 on the adult contemporary chart in early 1987. Her debut album was certified gold, also helped along by the follow-up hits “Go on Without You” and “Be Free.” She released albums in 1988 (A Woman’s Point of View) and 1991 (Let There Be Love!). She toured in the inspirational/gospel play Be Careful What You Pray For.

She released Home, her gospel-music debut album, in 2002 on T.D. Jake’s Dexterity Sounds record label. She made her acting debut in the movie Sweating in the Spirit. She signed with Tyscot Records and released her most recent album in March 2007.

In 2009, she collaborated with Teena Marie on the song “Soldier”, from Marie’s album Congo Square. She appeared in the 2009 stage play A Mother’s Prayer, with Johnny Gill, Robin Givens, and Jermaine Crawford. She appeared in “A Mother’s Love” in 2014. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

RiZen Is Back Together & Kicking Year Off With New Single

Picture it. A warm night, June 2004. Four Michigan women known as RiZen stepped on to a stage at Rocketown, a skatepark/youth facility in downtown Nashville. Their voices exploded and bounced off the cinderblock walls as the quartet zig-zagged the stage with churchy, synchronized choreography that complimented their feverish, youthful approach to traditional gospel music. One of the songs “View the City” was already a radio hit and now they were shooting a video so fans could see what they’d been hearing on the radio. The video breathed new life into a genre that was being phased out by samples, loops, and auto-tune. It earned them over 100 million radio airplay impressions and a Stellar Award as New Artist of the Year. Sadly, the song has been out of print and off streaming sites for over a decade because of legal disputes, but fans keep requesting it. So, RiZen (Adriann Lewis-Freeman, Ashley Griffith, Aundrea Lewis, and Kanika Trigg), reunited in 2021 and they are now releasing “View the City (Remix),” via DAF Gospel / Tyscot Records on Friday, January 20th. “So many times, artists redo the song and it’s not the same as the original that took the nation by storm,” Adriann Lewis-Freeman says of the track that was created by the original producer, Ay’ron Lewis who has also gotten Aretha Franklin and Shirley Caesar in the vocal booth.   “We sat down and put some extra tunes, some different vocals, and I think it overshadows the old `View the City.’  I know everybody will enjoy it and I know you’ll do the same thing: walk, shout, sing, shout. But most importantly, it represents that RiZen is back together again after 20 years of getting married, raising children, going back to school, taking care of parents that have become ill. Award-Winning ‘Gospel According To PJ Morton’

The Grammys were recently held, and the winnder of the ‘Best Gospel Album’ went to “Gospel According to PJ Morton.”

Through a series of remote recording sessions, keyboardist, vocalist and composer PJ Morton, the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton (senior pastor of Changing a Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church in Atlanta, and co-pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church in New Orleans), has released his first gospel album.

PJ is most widely recognized as a member of the Grammy-winning rhythm and blues/pop band Maroon 5 and for his work and Grammy-nominated recordings released under his own name. He did however begin his musical journey in the church before leaving his hometown of New Orleans to pursue his career in secular styles. PJ’s roots in the church remained in his sound, as heard on his 2017 album Gumbo and through the material he composed for artists in the gospel world.

Powerhouse Singer Melissa Bethea Drops “Awesome” Single || @melissacbethea1

Houston, TX: Former Jersey Girl Melissa Bethea’s debut radio track, “You’re Coming Out,”  snatched over a half million digital streams in 2021. The mesmerizing gospel belter who shot to church fame as the soloist on the GRAMMY® Award nominated group JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise hits such as “No Holding Back” and “You Are Worthy,” is ready for her next close-up. On August 26th, the Houston, Texas transplant will release the bouncy track, “Awesome” (New Flavor Entertainment/ Tyscot), on all digital music platforms. “Awesome” was written by Bethea’s production duo of Eric Davis ((known for writing and producing for JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise) and Clarence Singleton (known for writing and producing for Marvin Sapp, Hezekiah Walker)  along with Makeba Riddick-Woods who has co-written pop hits such as Beyonce’s “Déjà Vu,” Jennifer Lopez’s “Holding Me Down,” and Rihanna’s “Rude Boy.” The close of summer track boasts the zest of a Jamaican street festival with a soulfully commercial flavor that should bring Bethea a diverse audience of new fans. In 2021, the 30-something singer was recruited to join the music department staff at the 28,000-member New Light Church in Houston where she is now one of the worship leaders. Bethea, her husband Joseph, and their four-year-old daughter Jade packed up their belongings and moved to H-Town where they have made a new life for themselves. The life isn’t that different from the one she knew in her hometown of Newark, NJ. Her world revolved around church and music. Her mom was a singer with regional choirs. Her dad didn’t sing, but he loved music. “My father loved music,” she says of the man she lost to diabetes when she 13 years old. “Because of him, I listened to blues, a lot of Motown. I feel like a 90-year-old person because I know all about ZZ Hill, The O’Jays, The Temptations.” On the church side, Bethea became a fan of worship music when she started attending her uncle, Bishop Charles Harris Jr.’s Bethel Church of Love and Praise in Bloomfield, NJ. “I had gone to church all my life, but I never heard praise and worship music before that time. Their music department showed me that there’s another way of getting God’s attention.” “Initially, I did not want to sing,” Bethea admits. “I went to the New Jersey Institute of Technology to become a pharmaceutical engineer with a minor in biology. I was good at math, but that wasn’t my purpose. When I learned about  praise and worship, that became my calling.” Bethea began singing with gospel artists in the New York Tri-State area such as Hezekiah Walker and Lance Williams. She also began to develop her own style. “Cece Winans and Oleta Adams are my favorites,” she confesses. “With Oleta, I like the tonality of her voice and how she approaches a song. She doesn’t do a whole lot, but when she does add a little sauce, it’s impactful, and on top of that, she plays piano.” Bethea and Singleton have known each other since they were teenagers, running into each other at various church services in New Jersey. Singleton formed New Flavor Entertainment with Eric Davis in 2017. They have since collaborated on recorded music by gospel megastars such as Marvin Sapp, Ricky Dillard, and Bryon Cage, among others. Video Now Available As PJ Morton Performs All In His Plan

R&B singer/producer, and Maroon 5 keyboardist, PJ Morton, performed his No. 1 hit, “All in His Plan,” on the September 17th episode of the late-night CBS television program,

 “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The stripped-down performance was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans with Morton at the grand piano and three of his background singers humming along. 

The thought-provoking song hails from Morton’s first gospel album, Gospel According to PJ (Morton Inspiration/ Tyscot), which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart earlier this month. The album version of “All in His Plan” features powerhouse vocalist, Le’Andria Johnson, and platinum-selling sister act, Mary Mary. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart the week ending September 5, 2020.

PJ Morton "All In His Plan" Hits Billboard Top Ten

Grammy Award winning recording artist and producer, PJ Morton, debuts at No. 9 on this week’s Billboard Gospel Digital Songs chart with, “All in His Plan.” The thought-provoking track pairs the soulful vocals of Le’Andria Johnson with the platinum-selling sister act, Mary Mary.

“All in His Plan” is the first track from Morton’s forthcoming special event album entitled, The Gospel According to PJ (Morton Inspiration/Tyscot), which will release in 2020. On it, Morton will showcase a who’s who in R&B and Gospel music coming together to re-interpret songs that he’s written for others, as well as, some new original compositions.
