The Sims 4 Mod: The Custom Preferences Mod
To support the new Turn Ons and Turn Offs in Lovestruck, patch 1.108.289.1030 changed the code for how preferences work, so custom categories must be added to a list and no longer show up automatically in the Likes and Dislikes section. Furthermore, the list uses SimData, so it's not possible to simply inject it with a Python script.
Sadly, this means the only way for custom categories to work at all (at least without some really complex UI modding) is via a global mod that adds them all back.
This mod adds support for custom categories in the following mods:
Preferences Plus by helaene (includes Seasons addon)
All of Vicky Sims (chingyu1023)'s custom preference mods
Paws and Claws by ChippedSim (animal preferences)
Secret Occults by JaneSimsten (occult preferences)
Go to School V5 by Zerbu, aka me (school subject preferences)
Road to Wealth by xosdr
Occult Preferences by SpinningPlumbobs
Visible Weather Preferences by Andirz
Pizza Preferences by Kuttoe
Lovestruck Attraction Overhaul by MissyHissy
It's Movie Time by TANK
Preventable Diseases by NateTheL0ser
BetterSims by Nowhere
Townie Preferences by Scipio Garling
WooHoo Preferences by Lumpinou
TS2 Turn Ons by tyjokr
Political World Mod by Kemzima
Seasonal Preferences by Nom Nom Sims
Personalities+ by plumlace (attraction)
In addition, this adds a whole new Sim Attributes section, for preferences that don't fit the Likes and Dislikes section.

MOVIE LOVER TRAIT BY SASHA'S SPACE

This CAS trait is for sims who love to watch movies. The movies from Movie Hangout and movie theater options from Growing Together are included in this trait. This trait is meant for child sims to elder sims. There are 34 in-game movies, so that means your sims will have 34 wants plus other social-related wants. Thank you so much for supporting my first-ever mod, the love language mod.
Packs Needed: Mostly Growing Together and Movie Hangout, but there are some wants that have Get Famous and one want is from Kids Hangout.
HOW DOES THIS MOD WORK? Your sim will wants to watch movies. For Growing Together’s movie theater wants, the symbol will all be the same. This is also true for Movie Hangouts. IMPORTANT NOTE: Sims who don’t enjoy a movie won’t have a want completed, so I recommend you to cheat it with UI cheats mod. Right-click over the want and complete it like that.
Child sim wants: Watch Moonlight Massacre III Watch SuperKids Cortex Catastrophe Watch Lost Dog’s Journey Home Watch The Adventures of Spaceship Simulation Watch the Sheriff from Alpha Centauri Watch Yibs Yibs! Watch A Room with No Door Watch Of Tea & Treachery Watch VoidBop: The Movie Watch Critters from Mauven Forest: The Last Llama Watch Peter Barker’s Homecoming Hijinks Watch SuperKids: Agent Diaper Eat Popcorn Imitate movie scene Read books under the covers Discuss love for movies Complain about movie Talk about your favorite movie Talk about the movie you last watched Declare your favorite movie genre Text a friend about a movie Invite a friend and watch a movie with them Watch a movie Perform a puppet show Dream about the cartoon world Join the drama club Host a sleepover *you can use MizoreYuuki's mod that unlocks plan social events for child sims as a bonus way to complete the want if you want* Read the book from that one movie
Teens to Elder wants: Watch Simder Watch College Cram Watch Moonlight Massacre III Watch Roaring Vice Watch SuperKids: Cortex Catastrophe Watch Lost Dog’s Journey Home The Khlumzee Sisters Watch Diamonds Are For Sims Watch The Adventures of Spaceship Simulation Watch the Sheriff from Alpha Centauri Watch Yibs Yibs! I don't recommend this mod for people who use movie overrides because it may be a bit annoying to keep getting wants on movies you don't have in your game since you have an override. I'll consider making an override user-friendly version for this trait in the future♥

Thank you for being part of this journey with me. To celebrate all my recent milestones, check my video out to join the giveaway for Growing Together and Movie Hangout to celebrate all my recent milestones. The video also shows how this mod works. This mod will be in early access for two weeks.
For any modder who wants to translate any of my mods, I don't mind if you upload it on your Patreon or any other website that monetizes, BUT I do not want you to post it on CurseForge. I would also like it if you keep the mods up publicly for download no early access/paywall. If any translator translates mods before the early access period, please wait till the mod is public to release it for everyone.
A bonus mod I recommend to help the in-game movie experience is the RVSN film reaper mod (movie theaters in all worlds). Btw I will create a Tumblr post on all my favorite mods for movie gameplay in the coming days!

Something I keep meaning to talk about is about video games and art.
We've sort of meandered closer to a cultural perception of video games as art, I feel - more 'serious' games discussing major ideas like Disco Elysium, for example, seem to have helped. And of course the vast majority of video games contain at least one, often more, types of art within them: visuals art of many stripes, writing, music, etc.
But while thinking on this, something occurred to me.
I think you can argue that game mechanics are a form of art.
(My mother's old sculpting teacher differentiated 'art' and 'craft' by whether something had an intended function. I do think it's an interesting and occasionally useful metric, but I don't think it's a hard rule, personally. Hyperfunctionality can trip over into art in its own way imo. That's just me kind of preloading this bit: I don't think being functional means mechanics can't be art, but also, what is and is not art has been an argument since art first existed, so.
Anyways.)
We talk about ludonarrative dissonance - when game narrative and game mechanics contradict each other, worsening the experience - but I don't think we talk about ludonarrative harmony as much. And, deliberate (or at times, serendipitous) ludonarrative dissonance can also enhance an experience.
Undertale is a fantastic example of game mechanics being part of the experience in an inextricable way. It has too many examples to list here and some are quite spoilery, but from the saving mechanics to a major boss jumping straight into the first attack if you rudely skip the leadup dialogue, to straight-up destroying parts of the UI, it highlights just how much the gameplay can enhance an experience. A significant element of Undertale's narrative is about video games - about the casual callousness with which players are expected and encouraged to treat certain aspects of a game world - so I think it's very fitting that the video-game-part of the video game itself plays a role in the telling.
The Portal series, but specifically Portal 2, does this quite well as well. The player-character has no lines and limited opportunities to change the course of the narrative, but Portal is a very active game. The storytelling is built into the environments - particularly once you break out of the pristine, highly-controlled testing environments - but also your actions. The final action you can take in Portal 2 is incredibly rewarding if you've been paying attention to the story at all, and it pushes the game mechanics you've been using for the past 2 games to the absolute limit of what you dreamed possible.
On a more specific detail, Portal 2's gameplay plays around with your perceptions. Early on, Wheatley instructs you to say "apple", and you're given a button prompt. The text on screen reads, "press [button] to say apple". When you press the button, you jump. Chell doesn't speak. It's not only funny, but it sets up your expectations for the game you're about to play. Fallout: New Vegas, Final Fantasy XIV and some other games do a similar thing in quest updates, either updating the quest verbatim ("go find the idiot in sunglasses") or immediately telling you to proceed by doing something the quest NPC just told you not to do.
Tapping the 4th wall is common in many video games, especially big ones with more irreverent writing, but it's not the only way to bind narrative and gameplay. (It can also be grating if overdone, so one has to know how to balance it; I think FF14 does a pretty good job of that, for instance.)
FNV has one I really hate-like in a zone that is straight out of a horror movie. The unique enemies in this zone can be spotted in the foliage if you look closely, but VATS - a mechanism that lets a computer target foes for you - doesn't acknowledge them until they fully stand up and begin to attack you. If you, like me, have been using VATS for combat this whole time, it's an incredibly unnerving moment - it feels like my legs have been scythed out from under me. VATS is particularly helpful if you don't have a lot of FPS experience or the reaction time for it, and without its immediate assist you either have to try and kill these things freehand or back up and hope you can target them before they Get you. It's a subtle but extremely effective way of enhancing the fear factor. It's almost like the game is lying to you, a little bit.
And some games push that "almost like" to "absolutely". There's a certain trust one places in a game when you start playing - a trust that the mechanics will function as expected, that you can do the things you're told you can do. Some games, particularly horror games, can leverage this innate trust to do some really unsettling stuff. I haven't played Spec Ops: The Line, but I have heard some things about it and how it becomes increasingly unsettling. Some games change or remove things in your inventory, force you to fight back against 'your own' violent urges, or otherwise affect your access to the tools you expect. Interface Screw (the experience of the game's actual interface changing or working against you, such as suddenly flipping directional inputs, lying about your health, or otherwise messing with the UI) is another pretty common component. Games like Pathologic and Slay The Princess may limit your dialogue options in ways the player can lampshade in dialogue, and I've heard Pathologic 2's save games can get weird, which is a real breach of that unconscious trust.
Speaking of, some games - not all of them horror - will delete or offer to delete your save at key points or if you do certain actions. This is a pretty major act - save games can represent hours, sometimes hundreds of hours, of the work and playtime you put into something, and destroying all that is no joke.
A particular form of interface screw can be seen in some visual novels or other games with dialog logs, such as Doki Doki Literature Club or The House In Fata Morgana - where the text on the screen and the text in the log don't match. (In DDLC I think it was mostly the messed-up text being more readable in the log, but it's been a minute.) Most games with text logs don't do this, so going back to see if the creepy thing you just noticed was real only to find out that something has changed is definitely unsettling.
In other games, the exact mechanics can really affect your gameplay. It doesn't all have to be deeply profound or creepy stuff. Sometimes the snappiness of combat, ease of performing the main game loop, or the kindness built into the platforming mechanics can boost a game from good to great. Games that feel good to play are going to be more fondly remembered than those that aren't, after all.
In Stars and Time and its predecessor, Start Again, do some interesting stuff with time loops in gameplay that I haven't really seen before. In some ways, SASAP is even more successful at certain things - because it has way less opportunity to build up everything, the moments have to hit a lot harder. In SASAP I got sick of the grating replay of each dialogue line shockingly fast, and it was good at putting me in the protagonist's shoes; I also (since, again, starting at the end) found Siffrin's 'act again' move even more potent emotionally, because there's less variety of enemies in SASAP so it's generally more effective to give turns to the person with the right counter - and this matches the narrative, because Siffrin is literally using his bonkers high-level power to give his friends more time. It plays into the narrative into a way I found really powerful. ISAT has more time get into the groove of things and build up ideas, so both do some really interesting stuff with the concept of a time loop in video games that I don't think I've seen elsewhere.
Anyways, it's interesting to think of gameplay itself as an art - not just something accomplished by a person with technical skill, vision, and luck, though it is that - but something that can enhance a game with its own merits and mesh with the rest of the game that boosts the result to new levels.
EDIT: All of that I forgot a major example in Mouthwashing; the game is a pretty linear (so to speak), self-contained story, and it could work as a short film, for instance, but it's much more powerful narratively as a video game. The classic low-poly graphics add to the sense of jank as you-the-player try to piece things together. More to the point, it makes the story much more compelling, to me; by starting so close to the end, it's pretty clear that Mouthwashing is a tragedy, and as the player constantly marching the story to its end, I felt culpable in that tragedy. Driving, yet unable to change the outcome. The mixture of responsibility (ah ha ha...) and helplessness really accentuates the actual story being told, while the surreal moments and hard, glitchy scene transitions gives it a very unreal feeling.
(Some of the alternate gameplay sections like the cargo bay kind of took me out of it, tbh; reminded me too much that I was Playing A Video game, since the mechanics differed and were harder to grapple with than what I'd been doing up til that point. This I think emphasizes the balance it was trying to maintain where you're both playing a game and living a story at the same time; when that balance falls out of whack, it's more jarring.)

One underrated aspect of Mouthwashing is that it's really good as a video game.
I thought the player feedback was super strong. There's so many little gimmicky nightmare worlds and "minigames" and the game really helps you understand them very quickly and keep up the momentum. There were only a couple times I got stuck for long enough that I felt like it was breaking me out of the narrative, and I was able to resolve them pretty quickly. And one of them was my own fault - I was trying to use an item somewhere the devs had already indicated it was impossible, because I forgot about the little framing that pops up to indicate you can go into "interaction mode". That's a great little UI mechanism for making it super obvious what is and isn't interactive while still being unobtrusive and letting you feel immersed in the ship environment. Oh, and using the birthday cake scene to introduce the sawing mechanic? So when the player saws at Curly's leg, it's an incredibly powerful callback and the player already knows what they're supposed to do, defending the emotional punch from a "wait... which buttons am I supposed to press for this...?" moment? Brilliant.
Mouthwashing also has beautiful interplay between its gameplay elements and its storytelling. I think of Mouthwashing as "movie-like", because I feel like the pacing + tone + themes remind me very much of horror movies, but this story is meant to be a game. Think of the scene where Jimmy is basically telling Curly that he intends to destroy the ship. It starts with the player controlling Curly in first person POV. But right as Jimmy is talking about how Curly doesn't have agency in his own life ("You're standing at the top. Feet in cement. I get it now.") the camera escapes Curly's perspective and moves into a third person perspective, giving us our first look at pre-crash Captain Curly.
That was the last moment Curly had to avert the tragedy. He knew Jimmy had attacked Anya. Anya told Curly that Jimmy must be physically prevented from accessing the means to hurt the rest of the crew. Jimmy said it would be best if they all just died and then walked away saying "I'll take care of it" and Curly stood there watching him and did nothing. In chronological order, the next scene is the first time the player controls Jimmy. The agency and control, the status of "player character", has left Curly. He let himself become a character in Jimmy's story. And by the time he gets control again, it's already too late.
(Not that I think the game is actually presenting "player character" status as something that's true or real. Look how much Anya's internal life and deliberate choices shape the story, before and after the crash, even as Jimmy casts her as an annoying quest-giver NPC.)
I also really like how much playing through the little nightmare vignettes have the player recreate Curly and Jimmy's decisions. Like when Jimmy is forced to stare directly at the post-it note that's telling him to take responsibility (or whatever the exact words are), but he simply backs away from it. It's all about the way he finds mental and emotional loopholes to get away from what he's done, no matter how directly he's forced to confront it. What other medium could so intimately guide you through that metaphor, to express its internal logic so clearly without words? God, I love video games.

Protest The New Tumblr Changes
ok so since everyone and their dog absolutely hate the new changes outlined in this new post from staff, I've been thinking about what we can do about it. HERE is the contact page on Tumblr's parent company, Automattic's, website. Please write FEEDBACK/WEBSITE FEEDBACK/TUMBLR FEEDBACK in the "What's This About?" section HERE is the Tumblr help centre link, please select the category FEEDBACK when messaging them. My recommendation would be to write something like this, but in your own words to mitigate any spam filters: "Hello, I'm contacting you today because of the proposed changes to Tumblr's UI. This is not what the community wants, and will negatively impact all users of the site. Users enjoy the Tumblr experience because it is unique, and a throwback to the days before all websites were algorithm focused. Employing this sort of algorithm will kill your websites usability, and along with it, drive away your current userbase. People will simply remain using their other social medias, as New Shiny Algorithm is not the reasons why people would flock to your site. Please reconsider these changes, and instead reach out to the wider community about changes that we need to use Tumblr more easily, such as: - A reworked search function on blogs and tags as the current one does not work/is not stable. We also cannot search for untagged posts. - Better toggle options for people with photo sensitivity, your advertisements often strobe and it makes the website unusable. Ads should be tagged as flashing, or with content warnings for users (i.e diet ads, ads for horror movies with gore in them) that actually work (advertisements are filtered out of the tag system).
- Options for 18+ and NSFW creators on your site; Your userbase would quintuple overnight if you were to look into options for NSFW hosting and safe toggle options for adult users. The community labels were a step in the right direction, please pursue this further. This is by no means an exhaustive list of things, but changing the very fabric of what makes Tumblr work is NOT the move that any of us want. Please, again, reconsider these changes and listen to the community. Thank you" AGAIN please add your own points to this to help prevent spamfiltering of your messages, and please spread this to everyone you know. If anyone wants to add more ideas of what to add to this list, please do so in the replies, tags or add a comment to this post!
#ok rb this version it's the comprehensive one#if anyone has better ideas pls pls pls say them lol I'm just spittin thoughts rn#umm yea ok that's it#pls tumblr userbase manual blaze this post I ain't even gonna try to blaze it#my posts
