"SING TO YOUR SISTERS, YOUR BROTHERS ARE DEAD. THE ARMY RETREATED, THE SOLDIERS HAVE FLED."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on isolated artwork and the original 7" vinyl record itself of the "Who's the Enemy" EP, debut vinyl studio release by UK crust punk band AMEBIX, and released under the Spiderleg label in August 1982.
TRACK LIST:
A1.) "Carnage" - 5:04
A2.) "Curfew" - 2:40
B1.) "Belief" - 2:51
B2.) "No Gods, No Masters" - 3:47
ECHOES & DUST: "How exciting was it being in the studio doing the "Who’s the Enemy" and "No Sanctuary" EPs?
Stig: "Who’s The Enemy" EP, we recorded in a few hours at S.A.M studios in Bristol with Steve Street at the desk if I remember rightly, pretty much unrehearsed. We just went in and banged out what we could as quickly as we could mixed it then it was done. "No Sanctuary," we actually had some rehearsed songs to record so it took a few days in Southern Studios in London to bang them down, that was more enjoyable as ideas were flowing and at the end of each day we would have new ideas to put in. Things seemed to flow fairly effortlessly, music is a pleasure to be involved in when the ideas are flowing and you can see “the face in the fog taking shape as it moves toward you and becomes recognisable“, so to speak."

MY SPIRIT ANIMALS WHEN I'M HAVING "ONE OF THOSE DAYS."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on members of "Dismal"-era GRIEF -- Boston sludge/DOOM metal band, c. 1992-'93.
These shots are damn near impossible to find on the interweb, so, I figured the next best thing was to snap the pictures from the CD booklet itself, from my Fuck Yoga Records/Hellmilitia reissue of "Dismal" on CD, and which you should totally already own if you like slooow, heavy, fucked up sounds with a slight hardcore punk influence in Jeff Hayward's vocal delivery.
Tune Down, Stay Down, DOOM On!!

"WE WERE STEEPED IN BLACK SABBATH... WAKING UP TO MOTÖRHEAD..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the almighty AMEBIX, performing live in Manchester, UK, c. "Arise!" era. 📸: John, followed by the two primary influences on AMEBIX: BLACK SABBATH and MOTÖRHEAD.
"There was simply no one else at that time playing heavy music with a punk attitude. We were steeped in BLACK SABBATH despite our musical illiteracy, waking up to MOTÖRHEAD and bass power chord riffing. Gigs were amazing, people didn't know quite what the fuck was going on, we were intense, heavy as hell, and loud!"
-- Rob "THE BARON" Miller (bassist/vocalist and co-founder of AMEBIX)

TAM LOVES CRASS -- DAMIAN LOVES DISCHARGE -- LET'S MAKE A NOISE!!
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on Lynda "Tam" Simpson and Damian Thompson of UK hardcore punk band SACRILEGE, c. mid 1980s, location & photographer unknown.
Such an early shot of Tam, rocking far shorter hair than in her later incarnations, and she's still got some baby fat on her, too, which almost makes her look cherubic. Anyway, these shots are clearly from the same gig, and I don't know if Damian and she were in a relationship yet at this point.

NO LESS THAN ORGANIZED METAL PUNK CHAOTICIANS HARD AT WORK.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on UK punk/crust/ heavy punk ANTISECT, playing the legendary Mermaid pub in the Sparkhill inner-city area of Birmingham, England, c. 1987.
"Hosting a wide array of bands from anarcho-punk legends such as CONFLICT and ANTISECT through to old school names such as UK SUBS and American bands including SWANS and CIRCLE JERKS, the Mermaid was initially known for its unwavering support of underground punk. Talking to regulars and bands who frequently included the pub on their tour schedules, the idea of community came up time and again. Crust punk mainstays AMEBIX regularly toured there, as guitarist Stig Miller fondly remembers.
"A place like the Mermaid couldn’t exist in the present time,” he says. “By modern standards it would be considered a dump. They didn’t bother with things like fire regulations or having working toilets … sometimes when we were playing there the floor would be bowing and I thought we’d all end up falling through to the downstairs bar. But what an atmosphere: fantastic, DIY, real punk rock.""

"...AND DECIDED TO GO IN A DISCHARGE-INFLUENCED, STRIPPED-DOWN, HARDCORE-PUNK STYLE THAT DOOM BECAME KNOWN FOR."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on a "drummer wanted" ad by UK hardcore/crust punk band, DOOM, and who they ended up getting was none other than "Stick," c. late '80s.
ORIGIN: "DOOM began as THE SUBVERTERS (formerly RELIGIOUS VOMIT) with Bri Doom (guitar), Jon Pickering (bass/vocals) and Jason (Hog) Hodges (drums).
Around the time that Hog was replaced by new drummer, Mick Harris (NAPALM DEATH), the band changed its name to DOOM...
This line up played one or two gigs, playing in a crossover metal style, but Bri and Jon decided this wasn't the direction they wanted the band to move in as every other band was trying to "crossover" & Bri's guitar playing was somewhat limited (still is).
Consequently they left Harris and the metal style of music, and decided to go in a Discharge-influenced, stripped-down, hardcore punk-style that DOOM became known for.
Pickering dropped bass to concentrate on vocals and Pete Nash (A.G.L.) joined as bass player. "Stick," recently made band-less, joined after a very drunken meeting (hassle) at the infamous Mermaid Pub, this was when the "real" DOOM was formed."

"....BLENDED CRUST, THRASH, HARDCORE, DOOM, AND DEATH METAL TO CREATE A TIMELESS ALBUM..."
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1080x1565 -- Spotlight on a record ad for the 30th anniversary re-release of "Behind the Realms of Madness," debut album by crust punk/metal punk/UK hardcore band SACRILEGE, originally released under the UK's Children of the Revolution label in 1985.
"Originally released in 1985, SACRILEGE were one of the first bands of the '80s that both punks and metalheads rallied behind. Propelled by singer Lynda "Tam" Simpson’s ferocious vocals and politically charged lyrics, "Behind the Realms of Madness" blended crust, thrash, hardcore, doom and death-metal to create a timeless album that has directly influenced scores of punks and metalheads alike."
