The Role of Software Requirements Specification (SRS) in Software Development
In the ever-evolving field of software development, project success relies on a precise and thorough understanding of what needs to be built. This is where the Software Requirements Specification (SRS) comes into play. Serving as a foundational document, the SRS defines what the software must achieve and how it should perform, ensuring alignment among stakeholders, development teams, and end-users.
What is an SRS?
A Software Requirements Specification is a detailed document that outlines both the functional and non-functional requirements of a software system. It acts as a blueprint, clearly defining the scope, objectives, and constraints of the project. An SRS typically includes information about the system’s purpose, user requirements, functional specifications, and technical details.
The primary objective of an SRS is to eliminate ambiguity, fostering a shared and unified understanding of the project deliverables among all parties involved.
The Importance of an SRS Document
Clarity and Alignment: A Software Requirements Specification (SRS) ensures all stakeholders, from business leaders to developers, have a shared understanding of the project’s objectives. This clarity minimizes misunderstandings and facilitates seamless execution.
Scope Management: By clearly defining requirements, an SRS helps mitigate scope creep—a frequent challenge in software development where unplanned features are added without proper assessment. It ensures the project remains focused, on schedule, and within budget.
Quality Assurance: Quality assurance teams use the SRS to create test cases and validate the software. A comprehensive SRS provides measurable benchmarks to assess whether the final product meets the intended user requirements.
Cost and Time Efficiency: Clearly identifying requirements early on reduces the likelihood of expensive modifications later in the development process. An SRS serves as a central reference, saving both time and resources by minimizing rework.
Essential Components of an SRS
A well-structured SRS document typically includes the following sections:
Introduction:
Purpose of the document
Project scope
Definitions, acronyms, and abbreviations
References and an overview of the document
Overall Description:
System context and interfaces
Characteristics of the intended user base
Assumptions and dependencies
Functional Requirements:
Detailed descriptions of system functionality
Use cases and scenarios
Non-Functional Requirements:
Performance benchmarks
Security requirements
Usability standards
Considerations for scalability
System Models:
Visual representations such as UML diagrams, flowcharts, or wireframes that illustrate system architecture and workflows
Appendices and Glossary:
Additional information to support clarity and completeness
An SRS is a cornerstone of successful software development, serving as a guide for all phases of the project while fostering alignment, efficiency, and quality.
Best Practices for Writing an SRS
Engage Stakeholders Early: Involve key stakeholders during the requirement-gathering phase to ensure all perspectives are thoroughly considered.
Use Clear and Concise Language: Avoid technical jargon or ambiguous terminology. An SRS should be comprehensible to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Make it Measurable: Include quantifiable criteria for performance, usability, and other non-functional requirements to support effective testing and validation.
Leverage Templates: Utilize standardized templates to streamline the SRS creation process, ensuring consistency and completeness.
Iterate and Validate: Treat the SRS as a dynamic document that evolves based on feedback. Regular reviews ensure it remains aligned with project objectives.
Conclusion
A well-developed Software Requirements Specification is more than just a document; it serves as a strategic tool that bridges the gap between vision and execution. By clearly defining requirements and expectations, an SRS establishes a solid foundation for a successful software development lifecycle. Whether you are building a small application or a large-scale enterprise system, dedicating time to crafting a comprehensive SRS significantly reduces risks, enhances quality, and ensures stakeholder satisfaction

Game Blog #1
Hi! My name is Joshua and this is my blog about our game, Stairway to heaven, a roguelike tower climber game.
These past few weeks have been pre-production on the project! Although not much coding progress was made on my part, it felt very good to get all of the planning out of the way before getting into the nitty-gritty coding. I got lots of work done on the GDD, and we had lots of good inspirations to get down on paper.
I find that the easiest way to describe a game is to compare it to other games and add an adjective, e.g “Hades is like enter the gungeon combined with god of war” I think stairway to heaven is going to be like dead cells combined with hollow knight, which sounds lots of fun… even though i haven’t really played either of those games. Anyways, aside from the GDD, I also got my TDD done. This was…less fun, but it’s still very important work. My TDD was on saving and loading, which will be important due to the planned length of our game.
Still, at least making the flowchart and UML diagrams were fun! Actually feels pretty good to lay everything out in a visual way.
It looks dry, I know, but these will be very important later on when I’m actually trying to implement these systems.
Collaborating with my teammates is lots of fun! Working with others towards a collective goal is something I already enjoy, but combining it with game development is even better. It was very interesting to be taught how to use github by another member, and it seems he’s very experienced with it! Having him teach me all of the ins and outs of github was very interesting, it’s very nice to be taught by somebody with lots of experience. However, the biggest collaboration we’ve had so far was when we all worked on the GDD together. That was lots of fun! We all discussed certain parts of the game, found reference images, as well as writing down our thoughts in general. It reminded me of doing it last year, except a little more thought out due to our experience. I also loved helping another group member write characters! At one point, I had an idea for a psychotic shop keeper character, and he had an idea for a calmer and more friendly one. So we both wrote the shopkeepers in, one sells weapons and the other sells healing items (guess which) and both of them are by far my favourite part of the game so far! They seem like they’ll bounce off each other really well. The final time i’ll recount is when me and all of the members had a meeting about if the game will have lives or not. It seems small, but it was the first time we all came together in person to decide on something. It’s very interesting hearing everybody’s perspective on how a game mechanic will affect what they will do! I loved every discussion we had, really. That’s it for now, I’ll be back in another two weeks with more!

CAPSTONE PROJECT PROGRESS
Week 9: Moving Forward with Our Campus Clinic System
As we enter Week 9 of our capstone project, we're excited to share our latest updates. Our goal is to create a helpful Campus Clinic Information System for Xavier Academy at Initao, and we're making steady progress.
In Week 8, we simplified our project name to "Campus Clinic Information System for Xavier Academy at Initao." This change makes our mission clear – we aim to build a system that helps the campus clinic run smoothly.
We're grateful for the feedback we've received, especially from Sir Gulfan, which has helped us improve our project's initial chapter. We've also improved our project documentation to make it more reader-friendly.
To make things clearer, we've started working on a flowchart to show how our system will work. This visual tool helps us understand the step-by-step process within our information system.
We've also been using Unified Modeling Language (UML) to create a simple diagram that explains how the system will work for nurses and patients.
Our project documentation continues to grow, showing our dedication to keeping track of our progress and sharing it with others.
We've created a web-based prototype using Canva, which visually demonstrates the main features of our system, like the dashboard, student profiles, inventory management, consultations, registration, analysis tools, and an "about us" section.
Our team, including Hacker Posadas, Hipster Caironisa, and Hustler Bajao, is focused on making our project successful. We're determined to create a useful system for Xavier Academy at Initao, and we're excited about the progress we're making. Week by week, we're building momentum and refining our vision for the project.

Week 6 Chapter 3: Concepts, Theories and Technical Background

On October 1 , 2023, our group conducted a virtual meeting to discuss the chapter three of our project and what to include on our weekly update. Along the discussion one of us suggested to focus on chapter three since we highlighted the chapter two on our week five update.
Our group will use the Unified Modeling Language(UML) because the diagrams helps us to effectively communicate with the stakeholders. By using UML diagrams, these stakeholders will be able to understand the structure and behavior of the Student Information System. Use case Diagram, Activity Diagram, and Context Diagram are the diagrams that we will be using. In addition, our group will use the Entity Relationship (ER) model to carefully examine what data is needed in order to create a database of the SIS that is well-organized.
HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS),and JavaScript are the Front-End Development Tools that we will be using in our Proposed system. While PHP will be use as our Back-End Development Tools. Different types of testing will also be included in our proposed system.

Together with the other group, the group Hustller visited the Mindanao State University-Naawan Library on the last week of September to gather ideas from the previous related capstone project that we can use as part of the development of our proposed System.
In general, the group are intent on including the system interface on the next update.

Week 6: Programming Languages and Tools
Final Topic: Student Palakasan Information System for Student Supreme Council of Mindanao State University at Naawan
Target Client: Supreme Student Council (SSC) Officers
On the 2nd day of October, the Endeavor group decided what particular programming language that will be utilized for our proposed system. After doing extensive research in the internet, the endeavor group decided to use the following tools being indicated below:
Visual Studio
HTML5
CSS
JavaScript
PHP
PHPMyAdmin
XAMPP
MySQL
On the same day, the Endeavor group have decided to use the Unified Modelling Language (UML) that will assist the developers in specifying, constructing, and establishing the structural behavior of the proposed system from the following diagrams below:
Activity Diagram
Context Diagram
Use Case Diagram
Entity Relationship Model (ERM) will be utilized by the developers to determine the overall logical functions of the proposed system by determining the relationship of corresponding entities in the database. The proposed system uses Agile Method as well to provide a clear framework about the steps and stages that our project will go through. The following are the 5 phases of Agile model that will be utilized in the proposed system:
Planning
Requirement Analysis
Design
Development
Software Testing
In the software testing, the Student Palakasan Information System will undergo different kinds of procedures to determine the quality assurance of the proposed software using black box tests. The black box test is divided into two (2) categories: the functional testing, and non-functional testing. In functional testing, it ensures that the system operates as expected and meets the demand of the client’s needs. On the other hand, the non-functional testing measures the satisfaction level of the client's needs in exploring the system.
Overall, the Endeavor group is consistent and full of determination to accomplish the responsibilities of developing the proposed system. We are excited and fulfilled to solve real-time problems and issues faced by our client. I hope we will get through this with the help of our adviser, Sir Gulfan, especially the creator of all things. These are all the important information that the Endeavor group can share on week 6. So stay tuned and God bless!

Capstone Project Progress
-------------------------------------------------
Week 6: Navigating the Building Blocks of Our Health Information System
"This week has been a pivotal one for our capstone project as we dived deep into Chapter 3. Our goal: crafting the foundation of our Health Information System (HIS). It was a week of brainstorming, discussions, and crucial decisions.
SDLC Selection: First and foremost, we tackled the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) question. It's the roadmap that guides us from concept to a full-fledged HIS. After thoughtful consideration, we decided to embrace the Agile model. Agile's adaptability and iterative approach perfectly align with the dynamic healthcare landscape.
Designing with UML: Unified Modeling Language (UML) took center stage in our design process. This powerful tool, co-authored by software pioneers Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson, has been an industry standard for years. We've chosen it to map out our HIS's structure, creating detailed diagrams like Use Case Diagrams and Activity Diagrams. These diagrams help us envision the system's functionality and architecture with precision.
Tech Stacks: Choosing the right tech stack is like selecting the perfect tools for an intricate craft. For our HIS, we've decided on ReactJS for the front-end and Laravel for the back-end. ReactJS, known for its lightning-fast user interfaces, is an excellent fit for ensuring a seamless and responsive user experience. Laravel, on the other hand, with its robust features and elegant syntax, provides a solid foundation for our back-end development.
These decisions aren't made lightly. They form the backbone of our project, laying the groundwork for what's to come. With Agile as our guide, UML as our design muse, and ReactJS and Laravel as our building blocks, we're confident in our ability to create a Health Information System that meets the needs of our users and makes a meaningful impact in the healthcare sector. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to shape our capstone project into a reality."

Saw your ask to triviallytrue - what kind of database management does library school cover? I'm a backend software engineer, so I have a fair amount of working knowledge of DBs, but not sure how much it overlaps with what you're studying.
Hi, thanks for the offer! in theory, most of what many libraries do is database management, but in practice this has mostly been an introductory course to help us get our feet under us in case we really have to dig into a database. The textbook we're using is Database Systems: A Practical Approach to Design, Implementation, and Management by Connolly and Begg, if that rings any bells.
We've learned a little bit about Microsoft Access and SQL queries, but the bulk of the learning has been on the relational model and database design. More or less the entire second half of this semester has been about starting from scratch and ending up with a complete database. Like, here are the four phases of the final project I'm working on right now:
Make up an organization, then decides what data they use/need, what data they already collect, and what the users need this database to do
Make an Enhanced Entity-Relationship model of the above, in proper UML notation
Derive and represent a relational database schema from the EER model, and explain what processes you follow to get here
Use the schema to make a relational database and user interface, including test data, two SQL queries, two Access QBE queries, and three customized forms
So none of it is insanely complicated stuff, but it is a lot to wrap my head around. The software in particular feels like it's fighting me every step of the way: I'm not much of a visual thinker and any Microsoft Office product is a miserable slog to use, so diagram-making is not a good time.
Anxiety about tech work is also a significant factor here. In undergrad, I did an English major and physics minor, and one of the things that screwed me out of a double major was my abysmal programming abilities. A second-year Intro to Computational Physics course was a prereq for most of the other things I wanted to take, but I just could not handle learning EMACS and C++ at the same time and withdrew from the course to save myself the humiliation of an F. Learning to work with databases has brought back some of those "oh god, I'm going to accidentally destroy everything, aren't I?" nerves.
This may have been a bit of a ramble, but I wasn't sure what typical database work looks like, so I wanted to get into some detail. Thanks for listening!

CAPSTONE PROJECT PROGRESS
Week 8: Continuous Progress and Advancements in Our Capstone Project
In Week 8 of our capstone project journey, we maintained the momentum of our progress and pushed forward in our mission to deliver a valuable addition to Xavier Academy. Several noteworthy developments and refinements were made, signaling our commitment to creating a comprehensive Campus Clinic Information Management System for Xavier Academy at Initao.
One significant update in Week 8 was a further refinement of our project title. After careful consideration, we simplified our project name to the "Campus Clinic Information Management System for Xavier Academy at Initao." This change aligns perfectly with our vision to provide an efficient and comprehensive system for the campus clinic.
We continued to receive invaluable feedback, with Sir Gulfan's insights contributing to the enhancement of our project's initial chapter. Our documentation underwent further improvements as we introduced narrative listings to enhance clarity and readability throughout our report.
Recognizing the importance of visual aids in conveying complex ideas, we embarked on the creation of a flowchart. This visual representation will play a vital role in helping us understand the logical flow of operations within our information management system.
In our pursuit of an organized and structured project, we delved into Unified Modeling Language (UML) and are currently working on a use case diagram. This diagram will provide a clear and concise overview of the system's functionality, specifically focusing on interactions between nurses and patients.
Our project documentation continues to expand, showcasing the thoroughness of our efforts. We remain committed to providing a well-documented and detailed account of our project's development and implementation.
To bring our ideas to life visually, we've designed a web-based prototype using Canva. This prototype highlights the core components of our system, encompassing the dashboard, student profiling, inventory management, consultation, registration, analysis tools, and an "about us" section.
We are excited to see our capstone project evolve and grow. Our dedication to making continuous progress remains unwavering as we work towards the goal of advancing to Capstone 2. Our vision is clear: to create a valuable and effective information management system for Xavier Academy at Initao.
Our team includes Hacker Posadas, Hipster Caironisa, and Hustler Bajao, and we're all dedicated to making our capstone project a success.
