According to the World Resources Institute, the number of electric school buses operating or delivered in the United States more than doubled—from 598 in 2022 to 1,285 through June 2023—all driven to serve school children while providing cleaner air in 40 states.

Looking into the near future, the number of electric school buses that were already funded or on-order nearly tripled, and were spread across districts located in 49 states.

The emissions-free buses are found in 914 U.S. school districts and private fleet operators, according to the evidence-based nonprofit’s report published in September, 2023: State of Electric School Bus Adoption in the US.

California leads all states, with over 2,000 committed electric buses across the sprawling territory. This is more than five times as many EV buses as the next leading state, Maryland, with 391 commitments.

New Jersey has the second largest increase with 107 new buses, while West Virginia has the third largest increase with 42 new commitments. The updated data shows electric school bus commitments are now more evenly distributed across all regions of the country.

“We estimate approximately 69,000 students across the country are currently served by electric school buses that are delivered or in operation,” said the report authors, Lydia Freehafer, Leah Lazer, and Brian Zepka.

Zero pollution from tailpipes while buses are idling or driving means the students, staff, and community will be exposed to significantly less harmful air particulates that contribute to asthma and lung disease. The environment also benefits from reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

The federal government’s Clean School Bus Program, administered by the Environmental Protection Agency, is one of the biggest funders of these vehicles, having awarded 2,339 electric school buses—with more on the way.

Personally I think 8 hour exams split over multiple days should not be split into three hour and two hour sessions. Maybe it should be in 2 and one hour sessions, even if it means you have 2 sessions a day so you get a fucking break instead of three fucking hours at once. Like, you know THIS EXAM WAS LAST YEAR

Hate the number of people I know who just want to leave the US because of xyz political issues that don't exist in the imaginary other country they hope to move to. Not One of these people ever puts in the leg work to make the world around them better (at least one isn't even registered to vote) and it is literally the height of privilege to think you can just go live somewhere else where someone else has made everything work without doing anything to participate in your community first.

“Green light”: London’s buses become more environmentally friendly

New statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that investment in buses in the UK is continuing unabated, with zero emission buses making up a quarter of all new registrations.

The second quarter was the fifth consecutive quarter of growth in the number of new buses, coaches and minibuses hitting UK roads. The 1,826 new vehicles is a 61.7 per cent increase on last year’s second quarter.

The fact that there has been a steady year-on-year increase in demand since the start of 2023 is partly due to a rebound from the lack of investment during the pandemic, when demand was at historic lows, as well as government efforts to stimulate demand with incentives such as the bus fare increase subsidy.

Of the three vehicle types considered, demand for new minibuses increased by 97.2 per cent and new double-decker buses by 100.5 per cent, while single-decker buses were less in demand, growing by just 12.1 per cent.

New registrations of zero emission buses rose by a third (36.3 per cent) to 424 units in the quarter, making the UK the largest ZEV bus market by volume in Europe, followed by Italy, Germany and France.

The SMMT believes that because the transition to electric is somewhat easier for buses – they are based in depots and follow predictable routes – the bus fleet could reach net zero sooner than any other vehicle sector. However, it can be seen that it is not as easy for small and rural bus operators to finance the purchase of a new vehicle and the necessary infrastructure.

Mike Howes, SMMT chief executive, said:

A boost in uptake of new buses which provide mass mobility across the nation is also a boost for our economy and society, given the vital role these vehicles play – from commuting and staycations to transport for schools, charities and health and social care. At the same time, fleets continue to go green in rising numbers and, with suitably ambitious incentives and infrastructure is in place, buses and the communities which depend on them could be the UK’s first to reach net zero.

However, even the greenest diesel bus emits 1.3kg of carbon dioxide per kilometre, or around 104 tonnes per year.
