Russian Su-57 fighter gets new compact air-to-air missile with a range of 300 km
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/31/2023 - 08:42am Military
The Russian Su-57 fighter was equipped with a new long-range in-fuseling cruise missile, the RVV-BD – R-37M, designed to fit comfortably at the bottom of the stealth aircraft.
A informed source revealed to RIA Novosti that the missile is smaller in size compared to the "classic" cruise missiles, specifically adapted for the in-casting compartment. Although the exact specifications of the missile remain undisclosed, it has a range comparable to the cruise missiles of the strategic bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95MS. This size reduction was achieved through the incorporation of a folding wing, a new small bypass turbojet engine and an impeccably refined design.
Tumblr media
New missiles for the Su-57 have been in development for some time, gradually increasing the aircraft's arsenal. At the end of August of this year, reports emerged that the fighter would soon receive a long-range missile capable of hitting high-speed air threats up to 300 km away, presumably the long-range guided air-to-air missile RVV-BD - R-37M.
Speculation surrounds the potential adaptation of the R-37M missile system, already integrated into the Su-57 fighter. This advanced variant of the 1989 R-37 missile system can hit high and low altitude targets at distances greater than 300 kilometers. Notably, this missile technology is also expected to extend to the Su-35.
The R-37M, also known as RVV-BD (Long Range Air-Air Air missile) can reach hypersonic speeds. It will be used by modernized MiG-31BM interceptors, Su-35S and Su-57 multifunctional fighters. This missile is capable of reaching altitudes ranging from 15 to 25,000 meters, guided semi-actively or actively by the Agat 9B-1388 system.

Ron Beckett had already served two tours in Vietnam when he received orders to return in April 1969. As the district senior advisor in the remote, rural Dinh Quan District of Long Khanh Province, he would face a demanding and dangerous assignment on the front lines of pacification. Review: This is a book that is very different from others, as his role as a DSA was more about pacification and rural development. You have stories about introduction of new strains of rice, chickens and hogs into the district. You have stories about interfacing with the Vietnamese people, government, and military. You learn about different programs from USAID and others functioning under CORDs to achieve a multitude of goals. - And ultimately, the author does a great job detailing these stories.
But most of all, he details what an absolute failure the whole fucking thing was and why.
This will hit close to home for anyone who served in Afghanistan because the same problems existed, the same solutions were tried, and it was the same failure at the end!
He goes into detail about poor training for being an advisor, cultural differences, language issues, commitments and breaking them, and most importantly, how military actions affect the populace, especially one that didn’t give a fuck about the government to begin with. He also talks about how when you have a corrupt government and military, one that is based on class warfare and nepotism, you are fighting an almost impossible battle.
It was a bit of a slog to get through, but it was still very well written, very well detailed, and there are a lot of good lessons to take from it, especially when paired with Bernard Fall’s work.

It saw both sides embroiled in a competition to demonstrate their respective technological might and, in 1961, the USSR stole a march yet again when Yuri Gagarin became the first human to go into space.īuzz Aldrin embarked on three spacewalks during the Gemini 12 spaceflight on November 12, 13 totaling 5½ hours. In that year, the president Dwight D Eisenhower's press secretary James Hagerty announced America's intention to launch a science satellite and this spurred the Soviets into action, according to NASA History Division (opens in new tab) - the USSR's Sputnik 1 satellite was sent into space just two years later, according to (opens in new tab). Since 1955, the United States and the Soviet Union had been engaged in a space race. It was the second time he had applied, having been inspired by his friend, Gemini and Apollo astronaut Ed White, Aldrin stated in a tweet (opens in new tab) in March 2020. Shortly after graduating four years later, having written a 311-page thesis called Line-of-Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous, according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (opens in new tab), he was selected by NASA to become an astronaut. He was intrigued by science fiction - Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon in particular - but he didn't look towards the night sky with a great desire to explore, Aldrin said in an interview in 1988 (opens in new tab). During his childhood, however, he didn't display any great interest in space. He was actually named Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr., after his father (the US Army aviator and officer Edwin Eugene Aldrin Sr) but when one of the youngster's two elder sisters, Fay Ann, began mispronouncing "brother" as "buzzer" the nickname, shortened to Buzz, soon stuck according to (opens in new tab).Īll of his family including mother Marion and eldest sister Madeleine called him Buzz and he liked it so much he used it himself, finally making it his legal first name in 1988, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica (opens in new tab). COMMEMORATIVE MESSAGE TO THE HBO WAR FANDOM IN HONOR OF THE 75TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE VICTORY IN EUROPE AND THE 109TH ANNIVERSARY OF NAVAL AVIATION IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Ladies and gentlemen, to all the people of the United States of America, to all our remaining living veterans of the Second World War of 1939-1945 and of all conflicts past and present and their families, to our veterans, active servicemen and women, reservists and families of the entire United States Armed Forces, and to all the uniformed military and civil security services of the Allied combatants of this conflict, to all the immediate families, relatives, children and grandchildren of the deceased veterans, fallen service personnel and wounded personnel of our military services and civil uniformed security and civil defense services, to all our workers, farmers and intellectuals, to our youth and personnel serving in youth uniformed and cadet organizations and all our athletes, coaches, judges, sports trainers and sports officials, and to all our sports fans, to all our workers of culture, music, traditional arts and the theatrical arts, radio, television, digital media and social media, cinema, heavy and light industry, agriculture, business, tourism and the press, and to all our people of the free world:
To all of you, our greetings of goodwill and peace as we mark as one people the 75th year anniversary of the victorious conclusion of the Second World War in Europe and Northern Africa and the 109th anniversary of the beginning of naval aviation in the United States of America, a day of remembrance and celebration for millions of people all over the world. We celebrate this historic anniversary in a time wherein our health workers are fighting the dreaded pandemic COVID-19 in every corner of the world, which has postponed or cancelled many of the planned festivities in honor of this historic occasion in the history of humankind, that guided by the legacies of the millions of our Greatest Generation – the millions of men and women who served in the military, paramilitary and civil security services of the Allies, a few of those living having passed away due to this pandemic that has killed many in almost every country of the world, we may press on as one united people to conquer this disease, save millions more people, help to recover from the world’s greatest economic recession of recent memory, and move onwards to build a better and prosperous society guided not just by the lessons learned by this health crisis but also by the legacy of these heroes of our past, who fought bravely against fierce enemies determined to destroy our way of life.
Today marks the diamond jubilee since the night the documents of surrender were officially signed between the representatives of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the Allies in the ruined German capital of Berlin that very night, where so many had perished in the days of fighting that led up to the victorious capture of the city by the combined forces of the Red Army and the Polish Land Forces  earlier in the month while partisans and Allied servicemen began to liberate Prague at the same time, formally concluded a long and bitter period in our history, which began 80 years ago with the Nazi offensive in western parts of Poland, while there had already been a war in the Asia Pacific with armed conflict already going on in both China and the Korean Peninsula since 1937 due to the invasion of forces of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, and while they would be a few months left to go before the end of the war in the Asia-Pacific, the goals of the Allied forces in Europe and northern Africa – the unconditional surrender of the German government, people and armed forces as recommended by Allied heads of state in the Postdam Conference earlier in the year, the end of Fascist government in Italy and the liberation of much of Europe and northern Africa from the yoke and suffering of the Axis Powers, that resulted in the deaths of millions of lives, including Jews and people of various religions and ethnicities, and the destruction of properties and important landmarks, as well as the seizure of countless artworks – were successful accomplished, all thanks to the valiant millions of men and women of the military, paramilitary, civil defense and public security organizations of the Allied Powers and their national governments, who, thru their intelligence agencies and assisted by our home front workers, the entertainment industry and our athletes in sports, made possible the historic victory that we celebrate as one united people on this very day. We cannot forget these millions of men and women who risked lives and careers in performing their duties in both on and off the battlefields, in the work places and in their homes in the defense of our freedoms and liberties and contributing to the effort to win the war against the Axis Powers in every corner of the world. We cannot also forget the millions who perished at the hands of the Axis Powers in this part of the world, both civilian, military, paramilitary, law enforcement and first reponders. Most of all, we are eternal grateful that their courage and bravery opened the gates of the long road to victory that we celebrate on this very day.
On that very night 75 years ago, Europe and North America rejoiced in celebrations of the end of a long and bloody period in the history of humanity, the end of a five and a half year conflict that changed millions of lives around the globe, with hostilities streching from Britain and France, Libya and Italy, to the Arctic Circle and European Russia, with conventional and non-conventional combat operations in land, air and sea, partisan operations and intelligence operations behind enemy lines, which led up to the total collapse of Axis rule in much of Europe and the reemergence of freedom and independence in this part of the world. Without any doubt, the millions of men and women of the Allied armed forces made this historic and memorable victory possible, a victory that deserves to be remembered for generation upon generation.  The sacrifices of those who died in this long and painful war cannot be forgotten, nor even of those who survived in the concetration camps run by the Nazi paramilitary organizations in much of Europe and the Soviet gulag system. This unforgettable day in our history must be honored and remembered for all generations as the day we won the great and eternal victory against international fascism and totalitarianism, and as the shades of the very ideologies that begun this conflict rise once more, reminded by the heroism of our forebears who fought this conflict we must be, as one united people, ever more determined to honor the legacy and to remain forever aware and vigiliant at all costs to forever defend the freedoms cherished today and fought by these men and women of our past. No matter what the times might change, the legacy of this great victory will in all our hearts live on forever.
For today only a few remain living among the millions who served in the ranks of the victorious armed forces, paramilitary organizations, law enforcement and emergency services of the Allied Powers who served up till this very day of the victory won by their hands against the Axis aggressor, and risked their lives to accomplish this very goal.  Today, as we celebrate the diamond jubilee of this great and eternal victory, we think once more of these old men and women who many years past served with distinction in the uniforms of the victors, and once more say our deepest and eternal gratitude not just for their service to their countries but also the victory in which they took part as servicemen and women in our armed forces and paramilitary organizations,  personnel of law enforcement, civil defense and emergency organizations, home front workers, artists and entertainers, and athletes not just the remaining veterans but also their friends and companions who also served but have also left this earth. We pledge once more to forever honor the memory of their fallen comrades in battle,  glorify forever the memory of this great victory and ensure that the legacies of their service live on in our future generations.  To them who are the reason we celebrate this great holiday, we promise that we must never let the ideologies of this war break even into our modern world of today, that our children and youth know of the reasons why they had to even risk losing lives for the sake of this great victory over the Axis Powers, to do our best to live in the spirit of the generation of the victorious, to honor the memories of the millions who perished for our liberties, to fight inspired by their spirit and legacy the problems faced by today’s generation, and to build a world that is peaceful, prosperous, clean, progressive and developed with a shared vision for a better and brighter tomorrow for all the peoples of the world regardless of their differences.
While Victory Day falls tomorrow for those in the former countries of the Soviet Union (except for the 3 Baltic countries) and in Israel, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania, as well as in the Channel Islands, most countries of the European Union, USA and Canada celebrate the holiday today with much joy, commemoration, remembrance and gratitude to these men and women who through their service and most of all by their sacrifice against evil enemies, brought forth the victory in which we honor today. Out of respect and gratitude for the liberty they fought so hard during those 5 years, 8 months and 7 days  of global conflict, and in memory of those who perished during the conflict as well as of those veterans who survived the war and have been deceased in recent years, even as the rising of radical and evil ideologies in recent years have begun to fade the memories of the victory millions fought for with their lives,  once more we give our greatest gratitude to the already mentioned greatest generation, that is to say, to the millions of our military, paramilitary and civil uniformed personnel of the Allied combatant nations who served during the 5-year long world war, and the hundreds of thousands who still remain living, as well as our home front veterans of the conflict, and athletes who played their sports in the midst of the war, as well as athletes and coaches who served in the uniform of the armed forces, and most of all, the millions who perished in service for their countries for the defense of our freedoms against the forces of the Axis Powers in the battlefields, concentration camps, in the cities and towns, and in any terrain, honored forever in works of art and forms of media, in monuments and documents, and most of all in the memories of the generations of today and tomorrow, including the servicemen from Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regt., 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, XVII Airborne Corps, United States Army, dubbed today as the “Band of Brothers” after the book about them by the late Stephen Ambrose, the vanguard unit of the airborne forces of the United States Army in the campaigns in Normandy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Southern Germany, and in the 2014 film “Fury” by director David Ayer recalling the bravery of Allied tank crews in the final months of this war, including those under the 2nd Armored Division, and the recent Canadian TV drama X Company about the important role played by Allied intelligence and counter-espionage units and personnel – all of these units among the hundreds of units made up of the millions who served in the armed forces, security services and intelligence agencies of all the Allied countries whose role in the great victory we honor today will never be forgotten for years to come as the cause of our eternal remembrance for the role they played in the liberation of Europe and Northern Africa from the might of the Axis Powers!
Today, together with all the people of the United States of America, we mark as one people the 109th year anniversary of the beginning of naval aviation in the United States of America in the great city of San Diego in the state California, long connected to the heritage and history of her armed forces. Within almost a decade since that first flight in the sands of North Carolina, and with the United States Army preparing for the formation of a full military aviation branch, the humble beginnings of this important service arm of the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard began in the fall of 1910 under the leadership of no less by the “father of United States naval aviation”, Commander George Washington Chambers, when the first test flights were staged, and the test flights conducted later in San Diego in January 1911 by Glenn Curtiss’ firm which prepared the way for the opening of the service’s own naval air training facility in this great city, the fruits of this great effort led up to this historic day 109 years past when the two planned training biplanes to be manufactured for the Navy where officially ordered by this service from the Curtis firm, therefore officially starting the long history of naval aviation in this country. For over 109 years, United States naval, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aviators and flight crews have glorified the august name of the United States and her people in the defense of the homeland in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside other actions called by the government and the Armed Forces of the United States, as well as in disaster relief operations at home and at aboard, and have seen action in the recent campaigns against the Islamic State in Yemen, Iraq and Syria. And today, these naval aviators and aircrews, aside from their duties in national defense, have also contributed in fighting the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic not just at home but also overseas.
Once more, as we today mark 109 years of naval aviation, we thank all our naval aviators and aircrews of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, past and present, who through all these years served the people of the United States and its allies abroad, protected our seas and oceans from the air in its responsibility of national defense, helped the advance of our Marines in landing operations, supported our special forces operations and assisted during times of calamity at home and abroad. These Top Guns are the men and women who are the wings of our country’s naval service, the protectors of the skies above our seas and the men and women who serve as the guardians of our seas and coasts, chosen and fit enough to be up there with the best of the best, maintaining the traditions of naval aviators of the past and honoring the memory of those who perished in the defense of the homeland. Today, as its aircraft continue to fly over the seas of whole country, the thousands of men and women of the aviation branches of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard continue their duty to the country and people and to millions all over the globe, determined more than ever to help defend and protect the United States and her people, and in addition to the millions all over the world in its patriotic and internationalist duty in times of war and peace from its bases in the United States and overseas, as well as in our naval carriers operating all over the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, people of the United States and Canada and the free world, on behalf of a grateful people, today, with great joy and happiness in our hearts we mark both the 75th year anniversary of the great victory won in Europe by the Allied Powers against the fascist Axis Powers, especially against Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic, and the 109th anniversary of the beginning of naval aviation in the United States of America!
Today, with great respect and profound gratitude to Divine Providence we once again commemorate these great events in our countries’ history, as we bow down our heads in remembrance of the millions who perished during these years of war, civilians and soldiers alike, whose immortal sacrifices to the altar of freedom and independence inspired our millions of servicemen and women in the road to the victory we celebrate today and who still are models of inspiration to all the servicemen and women of the Canadian and United States Armed Forces and their public security services.  It is without a doubt that the spirit of the great victory of 1945 lives on in the generations of today, especially the men and women of the uniformed services, and to our younger generations we must always never forget that as the future of the world it is you all that the generations of today entrust the task of forever inheriting the traditions of victory by those who came before you.
Thus, as we today mark these great anniversaries of our history, once again we send our greetings to all our remaining living Allied war veterans of the war in Europe, to  all the hundreds of thousands of the active, reserve and retired servicemen and women of the uniformed military, public security and civil defense services of all the combatant Allied countries, and all active and reserve personnel , military families and veterans of United States naval aviation on this great holiday, sending to all our best wishes of a happy and long life and of peace, sending our prayers to Divine Providnce for your health and well being and for the eternal remembrance of the fallen of this great war. We send our greetings and warmest thanks to all of you on this very day that we celebrate both the Victory in Europe and the official birthday of United States naval aviation. Today, we are proud to honor and to thank all who served in the Second World War as part of the European and Mediterranean Theater of Operations of the Allied Powers, as well as to all the naval aviators, flight officers and aircrews, active and reserve, their families, and our aviation veterans of the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Coast Guard in this double holiday anniversary that we celebrate with joy and gladness. For it is for their determination and courage to win the freedom we enjoy today and for always being prepared at all time to defend it at all costs, especially at the risk of losing their lives for the sake of the future generations of humankind!
Today, as we mark these great days in our history, may we never regret to recall the heroic deeds of our predecessors who fought in this war and of all our past naval aviators who flew throughout all these years for the sake of the freedom and independence not just of the United States of America and Canada, but the independence and sovereignty of all of the free world. May we as one people never tire of honoring the memory of our heroic forebears and always work hard to be worthy of their sacrifices, most of all, for the sake of our present and for the future of our world. And as we move towards tomorrow, we, the generations born after this great war, will do our best to build a world that will surely be of peace, prosperity and progress, with its nature and history preserved and our future generations ready to live in the spirit and shadow of these great heroes of the war years, who perished for the sake of the world of our future!
And in conclusion, may we who honor the millions who died during this war and the memory of the millions of Allied soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, policemen, firefighters and home front workers who perished for our generation and for our children may have the courage to continue to honor their service and the role they played in the victory in which we honor and celebrate today  and in the 109 years since the start of naval aviation in the United States, and may we who will keep these sacred  and memorable days with respect and reverence especially for those who went before us  and always be ready to stand worthy of our great heroes of the past, and to help win a world for our tomorrow that is peaceful, prosperous, clean and with a bright future for our children – a world that is worth defending and worth fighting for!
And as the men of Easy will always say: WE STAND ALONE TOGETHER!

My Innings as DDG at Army HQ
In the beginning of Mar 2002, while Op PARAKRAM was still in progress, I reported in Army HQ to take charge as Deputy Director General, DDG (Equipment Management) in MGO Branch. It was an exciting moment to enter the South Block for the first time in my career, for shouldering new responsibilities, in an entirely new role, in an entirely new Organisation. It took me almost a month to understand the magnitude of the tasks involving “Equipment Management”. I was in the core group for the purchase, procurement, stocking and release of all types of equipment, for all the Units & Formations of the Army. It entailed inventory management of diverse weapon systems & ammunition, a large variety of combat vehicles for specific requirements of each Arm/Service, complex communication equipment and a range of clothing including special clothing for high altitude terrain. Additionally, the  entire supply chain management had to be monitored to ensure that the right equipment, of the right quality & in the right quantity, reaches the right location, at the right time. The challenges were numerous with multiple solutions.
Soon on arrival in Delhi, I was allotted temporary accommodation in Army Battle Honours Mess. I got accustomed to the new lifestyle of carrying pack lunch & commuting by the Army Bus. The new office timings (9 AM to 5 PM) and observing a five day week were some other major  changes. It was quite a learning experience about new office procedures as well, since the MGO Branch had to interact with all the Command HQ  and the officials in the MOD (Ministry of Defence) & the OFB (Ordnance Factory Board) frequently. In the first week of Apr, I went to Bagrakote & returned to Delhi along with my mother, Sanjivani & Aditya. We shifted to temporary accommodation in Shankar Vihar complex, near the domestic Airport. Soon thereafter, Aditya got admission in Xth standard in Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan. Incidentally, our children looked forward to this process of change consequent to each posting, which certainly laid the foundation of their personality development.
In order to familiarise myself  with the functions of the Ordnance Depots & the Base Workshops, I visited Agra, Kanpur, Jabalpur & Pulgaon  in the first one month.  In addition, I got an opportunity to attend the Review Meeting at OFB, located at Kolkata. It enabled an update about  the progress of achievement of targets by various production agencies and the PSUs, as also the progress of procurement of equipment and ammunition ex- import. Thereafter, we had the six monthly Review Conference at MGO Branch, which was chaired by the MGO and attended by the DGOS,  DGEME and the MG Adm of each Command HQas also  the members of the OFB. We had to modify our plans and  allot the critical requirements to each  Command HQ.  It was always a race against time, specially for equipment management of the formations deployed on the LOC & the LAC. Necessary priority was also accorded  to formations deployed  in Counter Insurgency operations as also the units deployed on the Siachen Glacier. It was a great learning experience personally, facing entirely new challenges, which I had never visualised earlier.
In the end of May 2002, I felt elated to be selected as a member of MGO Branch  Delegation for an official visit to USA. Our schedule  included visits to several logistics establishments and the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) involved in manufacture of defence equipment. We had just one month to plan our itinerary, prepare the agenda for discussions for each visit and finalise the  arrangements for travel & stay during our visit.  Finally, in the last week of Jun, we took off by Air India, on our maiden long duration flight. On arrival in New York, we were received by our Defence Attache, who escorted us thereafter during the entire Tour. Our schedule commenced with an impressive briefing at the Operations Support Command.
Tumblr media
Thereafter, we visited several Defence establishments and the OEMs on the West Coast and progressed in a sequence for completion of visits on the East Coast. The visit to the US Army Aviation Centre was really special. In fact every visit was unique and provided us an opportunity to visit local  tourist attractions as well. In the end, we came to New York and boarded the return flight, with memories of this professional experience. On return to Army HQ, we prepared the Delegation Report  and submitted it to the MOD, which was followed by a Presentation. I will always cherish this life time opportunity of a Defence Delegation.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, we were allotted permanent accommodation in Sardar Patel Marg complex, which was just adjacent to the Taj & Maurya Sheraton hotels. It was a coincidence that Ashvini & Nandini had come over to  spend their summer vacation. So, all the members of the family again contributed their expertise of packing, shifting and unpacking before settling down in our new Home!! We organised visits to some of the major tourist spots in Delhi on the week ends. In the end, we went for a short trip to Jaipur, popularly known as the Pink City. It was a refreshing break for all of us, before Ashvini & Nandini’s  departure for Pune.
Tumblr media
I continued my routine visits to various Ordnance Depots and the PSUs, on case by case basis. However, the most memorable visit was to the  Siachen Base Camp. I went there to acquaint myself urgently, about  the critical requirements of special clothing & equipment authorised to the Siachen Brigade. Initially, I went to Leh by the IAF Courier from Delhi  and completed the acclimatisation process at Leh. Subsequently, I travelled by road from Leh to Partapur, crossing enroute the famous Khardungla Pass located at 18,000 feet. This journey itself was a breathtaking experience literally. I had a night halt at the Brigade HQ at  Partapur before  proceeding ahead to Siachen Base Camp, which is located at 12,000 feet. I observed the rigorous training & acclimatisation being conducted at Siachen Battle School. It was a prerequisite before the induction of  Infantry Battalions & support elements onto the Siachen Glacier. I was also briefed about the logistic plans for supply & replenishment of various posts and methods of  casualty evacuation which were vital for operations in the challenging terrain and climatic conditions on the Glacier. I returned to Delhi after two weeks, with profound respect for all the Siachen Warriors.
Tumblr media
Next major event was the Army Commanders Conference in Oct. We had to compile the latest status of all types of equipment held by the formations, ascertain the essential requirements and prepare a plan for making up the deficiencies from the stocks held in the Ordnance Depots. In the Conference, all the Command HQ gave a review of their activities and projected their critical requirements. Similar Presentations were given by all the Branches & Directorates at the Army HQ. It was a great opportunity since I learnt about the methodology of integration of all operational and logistics  plans, with a long term perspective. The ultimate aim was to continually enhance the levels of operational preparedness, with higher priority for operations on the LOC & LAC as also the Counter Insurgency operations and the Siachen Glacier.
2003 commenced with the preparations for the Army Day Parade & the Republic Day events. It was a privilege as we availed the chance to witness the magnificent Republic Day Parade, from the main enclosure reserved for the Armed Forces. The latest equipment on display was a matter of pride not only for the Contingents but equally for the MGO Branch. All the celebrations culminated with a splendid Beating the Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk followed by the illumination of Rashtrapati  Bhavan and North & South Block.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is often said --- “Time & tide wait for none.” It proved to be true as  one year of my tenure was completed so quickly, enriched with so many professional experiences.  Aditya completed his Board Exams and while  the results were awaited, Ashvini & Nandini  joined us for another summer vacation. This time, we visited the remaining tourist attractions in Delhi on every weekend. The most enjoyable visit was to the famous Red Fort where we learnt about it’s historical significance by watching the Sound and Light Show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thereafter, I arranged a short trip  to visit  Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. Our visit to the iconic Taj Mahal ---- one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was the most wonderful experience.
Tumblr media
By now, the results of the Board Exam were declared and Aditya was delighted with a score of  90%. It was perhaps destined that Aditya would pursue higher education in Pune as we decided to shift base. I took Annual Leave for a month and all of us went  to Pune. We completed the admission process in Fergusson College and rented accommodation in Kothrud. It enabled all the children to stay together and enjoy their college life. Sanjivani also stayed on in Pune and once again shouldered the responsibility as their coach, guide and mentor. I returned to Delhi and experienced an “Empty Nest” feeling for the first time!!
There was yet another important  assignment  when I was detailed as a representative of MGO Branch to witness the trials and evaluation of BPJs (Bullet Proof Jackets). I had to attend these trials in different locations and carry out the comparative analysis. All the subsequent procedures till the finalisation of the  contract by the MOD were an educative experience. We continued to obtain monthly feedback about the state of holdings of equipment from the Command HQ and check progress of target fixation from the OFB. This ensured  that the rate of supply was always faster than the rate of expenditure, specially in case of weapons and ammunition. The result of this proactive approach was higher state of combat readiness and enhanced user satisfaction at all levels. At the MGO Branch, it created a ripple effect of enthusiasm resulting in setting higher targets, stringent timelines and further improvement of the supply chain management.
In Jan 2004, Defence Expo was organised in Pragati Maidan. All of us at the MGO Branch attended this event since the exhibition showcased the latest trends and technological developments pertaining to military equipment. Thereafter, I got  another opportunity to witness the traditional Republic Day Parade and associated celebrations. Next month, I was delighted to be selected as a part of another Defence Delegation for visiting a few countries in Europe ----- Finland, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.  Our Delegation was specifically assigned the responsibility to examine the latest developments in Snow-clothing, Snowmobiles  and Mountaineering Equipment essential in Snow Bound area.  We left Delhi on 15 Mar 2004, and over the next two weeks visited several  OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in Helsinki, Geneva, Berne, Zurich, Vienna, Rome and Venice.
We were shown the manufacturing process by each Firm and given a demonstration of the equipment in the Alps. We also got an opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle while travelling North of Helsinki. The Vatican City and the majestic Colosseum in Rome kept us spellbound. Finally, we went to Venice and enjoyed the enchanting Gondola rides. The Delegation was  privileged to have a meeting followed by dinner with our Ambassadors, both in Austria and Switzerland. On return to Delhi, we submitted the final report to the MOD. Thereafter, we gave a Presentation which was attended personally by Mr. George Fernandez (then Defence Minister). I will always cherish the memories of this fascinating experience of another Defence Delegation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just after completing two years and three months of my prestigious tenure in the South Block, I received my posting orders to proceed  to Ahmedabad. I was required to take charge as DDG NCC, Gujarat by mid Aug. I looked forward eagerly to shouldering this new appointment which would be quite different compared to all my previous  assignments. It entailed training of the NCC Cadets, appropriately called the process of  “Grooming Tomorrow’s Leaders”. As I finally departed after a traditional farewell from the MGO Branch, I had a feeling of tremendous accomplishment having fulfilled  most of the expectations of the  Formations. The dedication and support by my Team of Directors -----  Col Sanjay Kulkarni, Col KJ Singh, Col Saini and Col Ratnaparkhi deserve special compliments. I consider my innings at the Army HQ as a feather in my cap. It was time to shift from the dynamic Army HQ to the tranquil NCC Directorate, with an attitude of gratitude.

After the German embargo on Eurofighters, Saudis now target Rafale fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/22/2023 - 18:45 in Military
Saudi Arabia has its eye on the French-made Rafale fighter, after its long wait for the Eurofighter proved to be useless due to Germany's reluctance to export weapons to the country.
According to French media reports, the kingdom is considering acquiring 100 to 200 Rafale combat jets.
According to the French newspaper "La Tribune", in addition to acquiring the 100-200 Rafale fighters, Saudi Arabia wants to participate in the joint European program to develop a new FCAS fighter.
Tumblr media
However, the French newspaper reports that "the signing of a contract is still very hypothetical".
Germany announced in July that it would not allow the delivery of new Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia. The 72 Eurofighters of the Saudi Air Force are the second most numerous type of fighter, behind the Boeing F-15 manufactured in the USA.
Tumblr media
The largest fleet of fighters in Saudi Arabia is the F-15.
The change could have irritated the United Kingdom, which hoped to deliver 48 jets of the type to Saudi Arabia, whose contract was awarded to BAE Systems five years ago.
The export of weapons to Saudi Arabia was blocked by Germany after the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2018, taking a much tougher approach than the main allies such as the US, France and Great Britain.
Saudi Arabia's participation in the Yemen war was also cited as the reason for the blockade. The pressure from the business-friendly Free Democratic Party (FDP) has been increasing to reconsider the position after Saudi Arabia reached a ceasefire with the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen last year.
Tumblr media
FCAS concept.
Still on the FCAS, the Saudis are not interested in a contract, but in a partnership. In addition, according to La Tribune, Saudi Arabia would consider participating in the European aircraft project of the future if the agreement with Germany failed.

Asian anxiety about Atlanta shootings (NYT) The slaying of six Asian women among eight people killed in shootings at three Atlanta-area spas on Tuesday left Asian communities in many Western countries shaken, after a year that has seen a spike in racist attacks and threats against people of Asian descent. The South Korean Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that four people of Korean descent were among the victims. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was already in Seoul on a diplomatic trip, said Wednesday that he was “horrified by this violence” and offered “deepest condolences to the families and friends” of the victims.
IRS will delay tax filing due date until May 17 (AP) Americans will be getting extra time to prepare their taxes. The Internal Revenue Service says it’s delaying the traditional tax filing deadline from April 15 until May 17. The IRS announced the decision Wednesday and said it would provide further guidance in the coming days. The move provides more breathing room for taxpayers and the IRS alike to cope with changes brought on by the pandemic. The decision postpones when individual taxpayers must file their return and when their payment is due. The IRS said taxpayers who owe money would not face any further penalties or interest if they pay by May 17. The new deadline also applies to individuals who pay self-employment tax.
Troubled US-China ties face new test in Alaska meeting (AP) The United States and China will face a new test in their increasingly troubled relations when top officials from both countries meet in Alaska. Ties between the world’s two largest economies have been torn for years and the Biden administration has yet to signal it’s ready or willing to back down on the hard-line stances taken under President Donald Trump. Nor has China signaled it’s prepared to ease the pressure it has brought to bear. Thus, the stage is set for a contentious first face-to-face meeting Thursday. Difficult discussions are anticipated over trade, human rights in Tibet, Hong Kong, China’s western Xinjiang region, Taiwan, Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea, and the coronavirus pandemic. Just a day before the meeting, the U.S. announced new sanctions on officials over China’s crackdown on pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong. In response, the Chinese stepped up their rhetoric opposing U.S. interference in domestic affairs.
Cycle of retribution takes Bolivia’s ex-president from palace to prison cell (The Guardian) It was November 2019, just days after Evo Morales had abandoned Bolivia’s presidency and fled into exile, and the country’s newly installed interior minister was making no effort to hide his glee. “Any terrorist should spend the rest of their life in prison,” Arturo Murillo gloated during an interview in his recently occupied chambers, vowing to put the runaway leftist behind bars for the next 30 years. “It’s not about whether you’re an ex-president,” the pugnacious hotelier-turned-politician insisted. “In fact, it’s even worse when it’s an ex-president. An ex-president should be sentenced twice over because people trust in their president.” This week, an ex-president was indeed jailed in Bolivia—but not Morales. Instead, it was Murillo’s former boss, Jeanine Áñez, who found herself languishing in a La Paz prison cell after being seized by security forces early on Saturday. “We’re seeking a 30-year sentence,” Bolivia’s new justice minister, Iván Lima, announced, as Áñez was accused of terrorism and sedition—the very same charges Murillo had levelled at Morales. The imprisonment of Áñez, a Bible-bashing conservative who became interim leader after Morales fled under pressure from the military, was met with jubilation by some. Others, however, described the arrest as an alarming development in an already profoundly divided country.
E.U. unveils vaccine passport plan to enable summer travel (NYT) The European Union on Wednesday launched a closely watched effort to create a joint vaccination passport for its more than 440 million citizens and residents, embarking on a tightrope walk between economic pressures, discrimination fears and concerns over Europe’s slow vaccination progress. Supporters hope the “digital green certificates” will be ready by June, which could help to salvage the European summer tourism season and even serve as a model that could be extended to the United States and other countries. But E.U. countries lag far behind the United States in vaccinations, which has raised concerns that the passport plan could be launched prematurely. The passes are expected to be digital or paper documents for travelers to prove that they have been vaccinated, that they recovered from the virus or recently tested negative for it. In many cases, this could free travelers from quarantine obligations. Those privileges could eventually also apply to Americans or British citizens traveling to continental Europe, given that all vaccines approved in the two countries are also approved for use in the European Union.
Russia recalls its ambassador to the US after Biden says he thinks Putin is a killer (USA Today) Russia has recalled its ambassador to the United States to discuss relations with Washington, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said Wednesday. The move came after President Joe Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin would “pay a price” for Moscow’s interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. In an interview with ABC News, Biden was also asked if he thought Putin is a killer. “I do,” Biden responded. The president did not elaborate on the “killer” question or on what costs the U.S. might impose on Russia over election interference. The diplomatic tiff comes amid rising tensions between Washington and Moscow. On Tuesday, U.S. intelligence officials released a report concluding that Russia tried to denigrate Biden’s candidacy in the 2020 election. The declassified assessment said that Putin authorized the election meddling, which sought to help former president Donald Trump’s re-election bid.
Myanmar construction magnate claims cash payments to Suu Kyi (AP) A Myanmar construction magnate with links to military rulers claimed he personally gave more than half a million dollars in cash to deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a broadcast on state television aimed at discrediting the ousted civilian government. The statement by Maung Waik could pave the way for more serious charges against Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the Feb. 1 military takeover while security forces increasingly use lethal force against a popular uprising demanding the restoration of democratically elected leaders. The military has already tried to implicate Suu Kyi in corruption, alleging she was given $600,000 plus gold bars by a political ally. She and President Win Myint have been charged so far with inciting unrest, possession of walkie-talkies and violating a pandemic order limiting public gatherings.
Myanmar faces growing isolation as military tightens grip (Reuters) Myanmar faced growing isolation on Thursday with increasingly limited internet services and its last private newspaper ceasing publication as the military built a case against ousted elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Western countries have condemned the coup and called for an end to the violence and for the release of Suu Kyi and others. Asian neighbours have offered to help find a solution, but the military has a long record of shunning outside pressure. Large parts of an economy already reeling from the novel coronavirus have been paralysed by the protests and a parallel civil disobedience campaign of strikes against military rule, while many foreign investors are reassessing plans. The U.N. food agency warned this week that rising prices of food and fuel could undermine the ability of poor families to feed themselves. “Whatever happens in Myanmar over coming months, the economy will collapse, leaving tens of millions in dire straits and needing urgent protection,” historian and author Thant Myint-U said on Twitter.
Combat Drones Made in China Are Coming to a Conflict Near You (Bloomberg) A dozen years into its fight with the Islamic insurgent group Boko Haram, Nigeria is getting some new weapons: a pair of Wing Loong II drones from China. The deal is one of a growing number of sales by state-owned Aviation Industry Corp. of China (AVIC), which has exported scores of the aircraft. The United Arab Emirates has used AVIC drones in Libya’s civil war, Egypt has attacked rebels in Sinai with them, and Saudi-led troops have deployed them in Yemen. The company’s drones “are now battle-tested,” says Heather Penney, a fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, a think tank in Arlington, Va. “They’ve been able to feed lessons learned back into their manufacturing.” Nigeria is getting AVIC’s second generation of Wing Loongs—the name means “pterodactyl”—which can fly as fast as 230 mph and as high as 30,000 feet, carrying a payload of a dozen missiles. Since 2015, when AVIC introduced the newer model, it’s produced 50 for export and an unknown number for China’s People’s Liberation Army. And it’s working on even more advanced aircraft, such as a stealth combat drone with a flying-wing design similar to that of the U.S. B-2 bomber. The drone program, combined with deliveries of fighter jets, trainers, transporters, and assault helicopters, has propelled AVIC into the upper ranks of the global arms trade. In 2019 it sold military equipment valued at $22.5 billion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri), placing it sixth in the world, behind five U.S. companies. AVIC’s drones have two big selling points: They’re cheaper than comparable aircraft from producers in the U.S. or Israel—the other primary manufacturers—and China doesn’t much care how they’re used, says Ulrike Franke, policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
As 4th Election Looms, Some Ask: Is Israel’s Democracy Broken? (NYT) Israelis will vote on Tuesday for the fourth time in two years, in a do-over election for a do-over election for a do-over election. The seemingly endless loop is the most prominent symptom of the polarization that has paralyzed Israeli politics since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began to be investigated for corruption in 2017. Mr. Netanyahu has refused to resign. That decision has split the country, almost down the middle, and divided voters less by ideology than by their support or antipathy for Mr. Netanyahu. The polarization has been exacerbated by Israel’s multiparty system, which virtually guarantees that no single party will win an outright majority in Parliament, forcing the construction of wobbly coalitions with disparate small parties. Now, even the right-wing coalition that kept Mr. Netanyahu afloat for 12 years has fractured, mainly over question of the acceptability of a prime minister under criminal indictment. In the last three elections, Mr. Netanyahu did not win enough support to form a stable government. But neither did his opponents, which allowed him to remain prime minister, first in a caretaker role, and then, for the past year, as the head of a fragile coalition. Polling suggests that next week’s vote is unlikely to break the deadlock, leading many Israelis to brace for yet a fifth election later this year.
Clubhouse: the new social platform that is frightening Arab regimes (Le Monde) A month ago, the up-and-coming app Clubhouse took the Middle East by storm. In just a few days, the latest gem from Silicon Valley had already earned its place in the crowded market of Arab social networks. Since this audio chat platform only runs on iOS for the moment, its use is restricted to iPhone owners, i.e. the relatively wealthy classes. But in these circles, especially in Egypt and among the ultra-connected youth of the wealthy Gulf States, followers for this new app started to grow rapidly. In these countries where social pressure and official censorship stifle dissenting voices and non-conforming opinions, Clubhouse provides a unique breathing space. In these virtual rooms, where anyone can initiate a discussion on a topic of their choice, or join an ongoing conversation, Arabs are rediscovering a taste for free speech. As the powers that be have not yet found a way to lock down this new network, the three great taboos of the region (sex, politics and religion) are openly discussed. In a sign that the application scares autocrats, the Sultanate of Oman announced on Sunday that the country had blocked Clubhouse, following the footsteps of China, who blocked it in February. In the Emirates, discussions have not been accessible for several days, which is interpreted locally as an act of censorship without saying so openly. Fans of the platform can bypass the jamming with a VPN, but in doing so, they risk breaking the law: The use of such software is strictly codified in the UAE.
Yemeni rebel offensive threatens camps of those who fled war (AP) Already displaced once in Yemen’s grinding civil war, Mohammed Ali Saleh fled with his pregnant wife and their three children to central Marib province last year to seek refuge in a region that has known some relative peace and stability because of well-protected oil fields nearby. But now the fighting is moving toward them again. Iran-backed Houthi rebels are pushing to capture the province from the internationally recognized government to try to complete their control over the northern half of Yemen. If they succeed, the Houthis could claim a strategic win after a largely stalemated battle in almost seven years of fighting. The sounds of war terrify Saleh and his family. “It’s a nightmare we are experiencing every night,” he said from a camp for the displaced that had previously escaped violence.

Korean Air was selected on August 12 as the preferred bidder for the Korean Defense Development Agency (ADD) "slaught UAV squad development" project.
Korean Air received high scores for its technology in the first phase of the bidding process.
Stealth UAV squad technology is being developed for the first time in Korea as part of ADD's "Future Challenge Defense Technology Research and Development Project" to develop new weapons systems.

The ADD began developing the UAV squadron in November last year and completed the basic project. The agency plans to work on the detailed project with Korean Air.
Korean Air will develop an unmanned team system in which one manned aircraft and three to four stealth UAVs can perform missions simultaneously. The UAV squadron will not only support and escort a manned aircraft, but will also be able to carry out its own missions, including surveillance, electronic interference tactics and precise firing.

The South Korean company continued to acquire the main UAV stealth technologies by participating in projects such as the joint development of stealth UAVs with ADD in 2010, in which it was successful on a test flight for the first time in Korea. Korean Air also joined a project last year to research and develop technology for broadband stealth UAVs for the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT).
Meanwhile, Korean Air plans to use its capabilities acquired in more than 20 years in the development of UAVs to protect the main next generation technologies for stealth UAVs, such as manned and unmanned teams, cluster control and autonomous mission execution, and become a leader in the development of stealth drones in Korea.
Korean Air will continue to contribute to the future advanced development of weapons systems and the strengthening of the defense capabilities of the armed forces, actively participating in ADD's multipurpose stealth UAV development project, as well as a feasibility review of artificial intelligence-based stealth UAV squad operations using manned teams and unmanned systems.
