Licorice

Scientific Names: Glycyrrhiza glabra Other Common Names: Chinese, Persian, or Russian licorice, sweet root Overall Safety: 🙁
Therapeutic Efficacy and Considerations:
Gastric/Duodenal Ulcers: 🙁 Despite considerable amounts of anecdotal evidence and folk use, four trials examining use of deglycyrrhizinated licorice in treatment of gastric or duodenal ulcers found no benefit for healing or symptom relief compared to placebo. Use for this indication is not recommended. Usually given as 450 DGL (deglycyrrhizinated extract) four times a day, 1000 mg five times daily, or 200-600 mg glycyrrhizin daily for no longer than 6 weeks.
Atopic Dermatitis: 😊 One trial has examined the efficacy of a topical licorice gel in mild-moderate atopic dermatitis and found benefit compared to placebo. Due to the well-studied safety and efficacy profile of corticosteroids for this indication, until more is known about the safety and extent of efficacy of topical licorice, it should be considered a last line option for treatment, with a limited duration of use of two weeks. Use 1-2% licorice gel applied three times a day.
Reducing Body Fat Mass: 😐 Two small trials, one of oral licorice and one of a topical cream, examined effects for weight loss and found decreases in body fat mass, although body mass index remained the same due to water gain. In light of significant safety issues, licorice cannot be recommended for this use.
Reduction of Spironolactone Side Effects in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Treatment: 😊 One observational trial examined use of licorice to reduce side effects of spironolactone treatment in women with PCOS. Adverse events such as high blood pressure, hypovolemia, and menorrhagia were decreased in frequency and severity. Although data is preliminary and more research is needed to characterize benefits, licorice may be considered an option for women with PCOS who have trouble tolerating spironolactone therapy alone. Strict monitoring by the care provider will be essential to ensure safety. Dose: 3.5 g licorice (265 mg glycyrrhetinic acid) once daily.
Note: Because of the high incidence of severe possible side effects of licorice, oral use is recommended only under the supervision of a healthcare provider able to properly monitor electrolyte levels and other parameters and only when the possible benefits clearly outweigh the safety risks.

Chemistry/Pharmacology: Glycyrrhizin is hydrolyzed to the pharmacologically active form, glycyrrhetic acid. Glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid inhibit 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, an enzyme in the aldosterone receptor cells of the cortical collecting duct. Glycyrrhizin causes mineralocorticoid side effects (e.g., hypokalemia) by binding to mineralocorticoid receptors and decreasing conversion of cortisol to inactive cortisone. Glycyrrhizin may stimulate gastric mucosal synthesis through its effects on prostaglandins, especially D and F2. One component, glabridin, may have estrogenic activities, which licorice as a whole may have both estrogenic and antiestrogenic properties. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), although chemically very closely related to the synthetic ulcer drug carbenoxolone, does not seen to have clinically beneficial effects on ulcers. Licorice’s anti-inflammatory and mineralocorticoid effects have caused it to be labeled “natures prednisone” by some references.
Drug Interactions: May increase cardiac effects of ANTIARRHYTHMICS. May increase hypokalemic effects of DIURETICS and ANTIHYPERTENSIVES. May inhibit CYP450 3A4 and thereby increase levels of 3A4 substrates. May increase effects and risk of adverse events of oral and topical corticosteroids. May have additive effects with drugs that prolong the QT interval. Spironolactone may inhibit some aldosterone-like effects. Use with estrogens or antiandrogen agents is not advised due to metabolic influences and possible estrogenic and antiestrogenic activities.
Contraindications/Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with arrhythmias, cardiovascular, renal, or hepatic disease, hypokalemia, hypertension, congestive heart failure, or edema due to worsening of these conditions. Also contraindicated during pregnancy due to abortifacient and possibly hormonal effects. Use caution during breastfeeding due to unknown effects. Licorice causes sodium and fluid retention. Avoid use in children and use caution when using in the elderly.
Adverse Effects: Potentially serious adverse effects include cardiac arrest, hypokalemia resulting in paralysis, hypertension, edema, ventricular tachycardia, pulmonary edema, and congestive heart failure. Other adverse effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, growth retardation, decreased serum testosterone, renal tubular damage, primary aldosteronism, rhabdomyolysis, and hypersensitivity reactions. Four trials have examined the effects of licorice in healthy adults which support the relationship between licorice ingestion and suppression of the renin-aldosterone axis; effects in patients with cardiovascular or renal disease could be even more pronounced. Severe effects have been experienced by individuals taking licorice in the forms of candy and tea sweeteners.

Type 2 Diabetes: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Prevention

Maybe you have found out that you have a high chance of developing type 2 diabetes, the most common type of this disease. Maybe you are overweight or a father, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes. Maybe you had gestational diabetes, which is what appears during pregnancy. These are just a few examples of the factors that can raise the likelihood of suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, and Prevention Genes. | Extra weight. | Metabolic syndrome. | Too much glucose from your liver. | Bad communication between cells. | Broken beta cells. | Lose weight. | Get active. | Eat right. | Quit smoking. | A1C: | Fasting plasma glucose: | Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): Diabetes can cause serious health problems , such as heart disease, stroke, and eye and foot problems. The prediabetes can also cause health problems. The good news is that it is possible to delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. The longer a person has diabetes, the greater the likelihood of suffering from health problems; therefore, delaying the onset of diabetes even a few years is beneficial for health. You can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetic if you lose a moderate amount of weight by following a meal plan with reduced calorie intake and being physically active most days of the week.Ask your doctor if you should take metformin , a medicine for diabetes that helps prevent or slow type 2 diabetes.
How can I reduce my chance of developing type 2 diabetes?
Research, like the one done by the Diabetes Prevention Program, shows that much can be done to reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. Here are some changes you can make to lower your risk: Lose weight and do not increase it again. You can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes if you lose 5 to 7 percent of your initial weight. 2 For example, if you weigh 200 pounds (90 kg), your goal would be to lose approximately 10 to 14 pounds (4.5 to 6 kg).Move more. Do at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. If you have been inactive, ask your doctor which activities are best for you. Start slowly and move forward until you achieve your goal.Eat healthy most of the time. Eat smaller portions to reduce the amount of calories you consume each day and thus help you lose weight. Choosing foods with less fat is another way to reduce calories. Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Ask your healthcare provider what other changes you can make to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Most of the time, your best option to prevent type 2 diabetes is to make changes in your lifestyle that work for the long term. Start with an action plan to prevent type 2 diabetes. What should I do if my doctor told me that I have prediabetes? Prediabetes is diagnosed when blood glucose levels, or blood sugar, are higher than normal, but not enough to make a diagnosis of diabetes. Pre-diabetes is serious because it increases the likelihood of type 2 diabetes. Several of the factors that increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes put the person at risk for prediabetes. Other names for prediabetes are impaired fasting glucose or impaired glucose tolerance. Some people call prediabetes "borderline diabetes." According to recent data and statistics about diabetes of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 3 people in the United States has prediabetes. You can not tell if you have prediabetes unless you have a test. If you have prediabetes you can decrease your chance of developing type 2 diabetes by losing weight if necessary, by doing more physical activity and by following a low-calorie diabetes diet plan. Start your Action Plan to prevent type 2 diabetes. If you want more support, you can find a lifestyle change program in your area through the National Diabetes Prevention Program. If I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant, how can I reduce my chance of developing type 2 diabetes? The Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and usually goes after the baby is born. Although gestational diabetes disappears, you still have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 5 to 10 years. Your baby is also more likely to become obese and suffer from type 2 diabetes later in life. Making healthy choices helps the whole family and can prevent your child from becoming obese or diabetic. Here are the steps you should take, both for you and your child, if you had gestational diabetes: Get tested for diabetes 6 to 12 weeks after your baby is born. If your blood glucose level is still high, you may have type 2 diabetes; If it is normal, you should have the test every 3 years to see if you have developed type 2 diabetes.Stay more active and eat healthily to return to a healthy weight.Breastfeed your baby. Breastfeeding gives your baby the right balance of nutrients and helps you burn calories.Ask your doctor if you should take metformin, a medicine that helps prevent type 2 diabetes.
Symptoms and causes of diabetes
Symptoms of diabetes include: diabetes symptoms increased thirst and the urge to urinate Appetite increase fatigue blurry vision numbness or tingling in the hands or feet ulcers that do not heal Weight loss for no apparent reason The symptoms of diabetes type 1 diabetes can appear quickly, in a matter of weeks. In contrast, the symptoms of type 2 diabetes usually progress very slowly, over several years, and can be so mild that sometimes they are not even noticed. Many people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms. Some only know they have the disease when there are health problems related to diabetes, such as blurred vision or heart problems.
What causes type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the immune system, which fights infections, attacks and destroys the beta cells of the pancreas that produce insulin. Scientists think that type 1 diabetes is caused by genes and environmental factors, such as viruses, that can trigger the disease. Some studies such as TrialNet are focused on identifying the causes of type 1 diabetes and the possible ways to prevent or delay the progress or onset of the disease.
What causes type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease, is caused by several factors, including lifestyle and genes. Overweight, obesity and physical inactivity A person is more likely to develop diabetes type 2 if they are not physically active and are overweight or obese. Sometimes, the excess weight causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. The location of body fat also matters. Excess belly fat is linked to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and diseases of the heart and blood vessels. To see if your weight represents a risk for the onset of type 2 diabetes, see these graphs of body mass index (BMI). Neurotrophic Keratitis Market - Brief Analysis by Top Key Players
Neurotrophic Keratitis Market: Introduction
Transparency Market Research has published a new report titled, “Global Neurotrophic Keratitis Market”. According to the report, the global neurotrophic keratitis market was valued at US$ 91.6 Mn in 2018 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of ~17% from 2019 to 2027. Rise in reported cases of keratitis, increase in research & developmental activities, surge in awareness, and rise in co-morbidities & risk factors boost the growth of the global neurotrophic keratitis market.
Pharmacotherapies using Drugs to Lead Global Market
In terms of treatment type, the drugs segment accounted for major share of the global neurotrophic keratitis market in 2018. The segment is anticipated to witness strong growth from 2019 to 2027. The drugs segment has been sub-segmented into artificial tears, recombinant human nerve growth factor eye drop, antibiotics, bandage contact lens, and others. The artificial tears sub-segment accounted for major share of the drugs segment in 2018. However, the recombinant human nerve growth factors eye drops sub-segment is expected to account for major share by 2027, as these eye drops restore the normal healing process of the eye and repair corneal damage. The drugs segment’s major market share is due to increase in clinical studies, approvals, and launch of various novel products. In February 2019, ReGenTree initiated the ARISE-3 study, the phase 3 clinical trial of the new drug RGN-259 for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. In August 2018, Dompé announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for cenegermin (Oxervate), a breakthrough therapy for neurotrophic keratitis (NK), which is a rare and progressive eye disease that can lead to corneal scarring and vision loss.

Stage II Neurotrophic Keratitis to Remain Significant
Based on application, the stage I segment held major share of the global neurotrophic keratitis market in 2018. However, the stage II segment is projected to capture the largest share of the global market by 2027. Dominance of the stage I segment in 2018 can be ascribed to off-label availability of products for stage I, high prevalence of early symptoms in stage I, and high demand for preservative-free artificial tears during the first half of the forecast period. Symptoms of stage II neurotrophic keratitis help in diagnosis of the disease. A study published in 2014 titled, “Diagnosis and management of neurotrophic keratitis”, stated that stage II NK is characterized by recurrent and/or persistent epithelial defects (PED) with an oval or circular shape, most frequently localized at the superior half of the cornea. Diagnosis of NK is primarily based on the clinical history of conditions associated with trigeminal impairment, presence of PED or ulcers, and decreased corneal sensitivity.
A study published in Elsevier, Inc. in November 2017 indicated that around 34% of total studied patients in Italy were affected by persistent epithelial defects (PED) of stage II. Hence, the growth of the stage II segment can be ascribed to rise in awareness about and rate of diagnosis of the disease, launch of products which are effective in stage II persistent epithelial defects treatment, and surge in inclination of patients toward specialized centers for receiving advanced treatment.

Sugar is Killing You, Use these Natural Sweeteners Instead!
Here’s the paradox:
Americans spend more on health care and supplements than any other country, yet our health and our health care system both rank at the bottom of virtually every study and survey today. (1, 2, 3)
As we bathe themselves in coconut and fish oils and take every supplement under the sun, most people are coming to the realization that a “cure-all” doesn't really exist. However (and this is a HUGE however) if a “panacea” does exist, it would be completely omitting sugar from our diets!
Sugar & Immunity
But everything in moderation, right? Nope. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Most people don’t realize this, but ever since the early 1970s, it has been proven that sugar literally shuts down white blood cell effectiveness immediately after it is consumed and puts the body in harm’s way for up to 5 hours! (1)
According to nutrition expert K.C. Craichy (Quest for the Cures), just 100 grams of sugar inhibits our white blood cell’s ability to kill the pathogens in our body by up to 90 percent. And this happens within 15 minutes of consumption! (2) To put this is more familiar terms, Founder of the American Anti-Cancer Institute Bob Wright confirms that data from a 1973 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition still holds true today: “One can of [soda] has enough sugar to shut down 50 percent of our immune system for a minimum of 4 hours,” Wright says. (2)
Additionally, in the words of the American Anti-Cancer Institute,
When we consume sugar, we are simultaneously shutting off our defenses while pouring gasoline on the fire that is Cancer. When we take into account that “50 to 70 percent of our total immune system cells cannot see cancer … even on our best day,” the notion of adding it to our diet seems even more blasphemous (A.J. Lanigan, Quest for the Cures). (2)
More Risks with Sugar than Previously Expected
First off, sugar is arguably the most dangerous substance on the planet and should be avoided like the plague. Nancy Appleton, PhD even claims that there are literally 141 ways sugar ruins your health. (3) In addition to containing absolutely no nutritional value, sugar has been reported to: (4, 5, 6)
Cause dental cavities.
Cause skin conditions like acne and eczema.
Contribute to hormone imbalance and adrenal fatigue.
Deplete your body of natural energy and prevents mineral absorption in your bones.
Encourage stomach ulcer formation.
Feed candida.
Greatly inhibit metabolism.
Lead to osteoporosis and arthritis.
Cause gallstones.
Spike blood sugar levels.
Suppress the immune system.
Second, the real danger of sugar is its ubiquity. It’s literally everywhere.
In the words of the American Nutrition Association,
“According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the average adult in the United States takes in 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day, or a whopping 150 pounds a year, while teens pile in 34 teaspoons a day. That’s more than twice the amount of sugar we should be eating.” (7)

The Sugar Habit
Consuming sugar and simple carbohydrates can lead to an addictive dopamine cycle, which makes it extremely challenging to cut them out of your diet. Research has actually shown that there is a neurochemical similarity between intermittent bingeing on sucrose and drugs of abuse: “both can repeatedly increase extracellular [dopamine levels] in the nucleus accumbens.” (8) In fact, sugar is more addictive than cocaine! (9) Eight times more addictive, to be precise, according to Mark Hyman, MD. (10)
This is why it's important to consume as many natural, whole foods as possible because they will trigger a gradual, moderate amount of feel-good hormones. Whereas sugary treats will cause a spike, which in turn causes people to crash soon afterwards. Like narcotics, this dramatic fall back to Earth after riding high on the sugar clouds will create an intense craving in your body for another “hit.” Ever wonder why it's so challenging to eat just one cookie or have one slurp of a cola?
3 Natural Sweeteners Safe to Enjoy
Thankfully, natural sweeteners abound and kicking the habit can be a cinch if you use these three instead of sugar.
Stevia – By far the healthiest and sweetest natural sweetener, stevia is an herb that has been shown to help reverse diabetics and obesity. Stevia is the best natural sweetener for two reasons:
#1: It is a natural plant that has powerful healing properties.
#2: It has no calories and virtually 0 glycemic index, and when it is used instead of sugar (and even other natural sweeteners), blood glucose levels are not affected
Of the 350 scientific articles referencing stevia, we are starting to see that stevia can help with more than diabetes and obesity. The journal Nutrition and Cancer, for example, recently published a groundbreaking study showing how stevia can actually prevent and kill breast cancer! (11) Time will tell how truly effective this wonderfully sweet herb can be for our health and wellness.
Raw Honey – Ranking #2, most raw unfiltered honey are a rich source of: (12)
Amino acids
B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
Calcium
Copper
Iron
Magnesium
Manganese
Phosphorus
Potassium
Sodium
Zinc
This cornucopia of nutrition has made honey an extremely effective wound healer and has been known to help with irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, MRSA, tooth decay and a slew of other disorders.
Taking just one teaspoon of local raw honey has been shown to enhance immune function by building a tolerance to local pollen. The International Archives of Allergy and Immunology published an article that discovered that pre-seasonal daily use of birch pollen honey literally decreased allergy symptoms by 60%! (13)
Maple Syrup – Shown to kill colon cancer cells, maple syrup is a delightful replacement for most baked good recipes. (14) It is rich in calcium, iron, zinc, manganese and in the words of University of Rhode Island researcher Navindra Seeram
“I continue to say that nature is the best chemist, and that maple syrup is becoming a champion food when it comes to the number and variety of beneficial compounds found in it,” Seeram said. “It’s important to note that in our laboratory research we found that several of these compounds possess anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which have been shown to fight cancer, diabetes and bacterial illnesses.” (15)
A Note About Agave & Sugar Alcohols
Both agave and sugar alcohols like xylitol have been praised for being “natural” sweeteners and many health care providers are recommending them because they are low on the glycemic index. First of all, they are anything BUT natural. Secondly, they are quite toxic to the body.
Ever since the 1950s, researchers have known that xylitol: (17)
Cannot be properly metabolized by humans.
Causes digestive issues like gas, bloating and diarrhea.
Gets stored in the liver, which can contribute to long-term liver damage.
Agave is even worse! A great explanation came from a recent Dr. Oz article where the famed medical celebrity retracted his opinion of agave.
After careful consideration of the available research, today I’m asking you to eliminate agave from your kitchen and your diet. Here’s why.
We used to think that because agave has a low-glycemic index and doesn’t spike your blood sugar like regular sugar does, it would be a good alternative for diabetics. But it turns out that although agave doesn’t contain a lot of glucose, it contains more fructose than any other common sweetener, including high-fructose corn syrup. (18)
When it comes to sweeteners, let common sense be your guide. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stick with stevia, raw honey and maple syrup – these 3 have been tested by time and science to not only satisfy your sweet tooth, but are also healing and abundant life giving!

What are the Benefits Of Kimchi?
Kimchi anyone? I’m into this food so much! Though most of people might not be the same like me,cause this food definitely smell a little bit foul, ahaha! . . .for others I guess. As a matter of fact it’s a little bit fishy (due to the fish sauce ingredient :D) and also spicy..
According to Organic Facts, the health benefits of kimchi results an improved heart health and a healthy digestive system. The wealth of antioxidants in the kimchi develop healing effects in medical conditions like cancer, diabetes, obesity, atopic dermatitis, and gastric ulcers. This flavonoid and probiotic-rich food delays aging, regulates cholesterol levels, and boosts the immune system.
Nutritional Value of Kimchi
Kimchi is a low-calorie, high fiber, and nutrient-packed side dish. It is a storehouse of a range of vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, and vitamin C. It is also rich in essential amino acids and minerals such as iron, calcium, and selenium. It contains impressive assortment of powerful antioxidants and provides an additional benefit of probiotics as well in the form of lactobacillus bacteria. It contains numerous helpful components including capsaicin, chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids, and isothiocyanates and has a low amount of fat and sugar.
Health Benefits of Kimchi
The delectable taste of kimchi, which has been admired globally comes with a super bonus of health benefits attributing to a range of qualitative evidence supported by several pieces of research. The major health benefits have been discussed below.
Promotes Digestion
The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture has published a study, which states that kimchi is an excellent food to promote digestion. It is a source of probiotics that attributes to the process of fermentation involved in its preparation. The process of fermentation not only enhances the taste but also creates healthy bacteria, Lactobacillus, which is required by the body to keep a healthy state of intestinal flora.
It is made from cabbage which is already well known for its detoxification qualities and helps the body in getting rid of the wastes and toxins. It aids in cleaning up the intestines and stimulates better assimilation of nutrients in the body. The Fiber content present in kimchi also assists in stabilizing the bowel movements and prevents constipation.
Regulates Cholesterol
In a randomized trial conducted by the researchers at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Pusan National University, Korea, it was diagnosed that kimchi helps in lowering the total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol along with the concentration of blood glucose in the body.
Regular consumption of kimchi has a beneficial effect on the levels of cholesterol. Garlic, which is used to prepare it, is rich in selenium and allicin. Allicin is an eminent component which helps in lowering the cholesterol levels, thereby, reducing the risk of developing cardiac disorders such as strokes and heart attacks. Selenium also exerts a protective effect on the artery walls by preventing the build-up of plaque and decreasing the threat of atherosclerosis.
Antioxidant Properties
A 2008 study found that kimchi varieties made using the red pepper seeds are rich in powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants along with phenols and flavonoids present in it exert a protective effect against oxidative damage and shield the body from the harmful effects of oxygen free radicals.
Treats Atopic Dermatitis
The presence of lactobacillus bacteria in kimchi makes it a multi-talented condiment. It extends its therapeutic effects on various skin ailments such as atopic dermatitis which is characterized by increased levels of immunoglobulin E and skin lesions such as edema and hemorrhage. A study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology has shown that healthy bacteria present in fermented kimchi exert suppressive effects on mite-induced dermatitis and help in reducing inflammation.
Weight Loss
Kimchi is a source of healthy lactobacillus bacteria which the body utilizes for its healthy functioning. This good bacterium also assists in weight loss by controlling the appetite and reducing the blood sugar levels. The fiber content present in it keeps your body full and your hunger satisfied for a longer duration preventing you from overeating. The Nutrition Research journal from New York has included a study conducted on obese patients has validated the favorable effects of fermented kimchi on the body with respect to body mass index (BMI) and body fat, which helps in reducing the development of factors implicated in metabolic syndrome.
Boosts Immune System
The multi-nutrient packed kimchi is rich in a range of flavonoids and phenolic components. The variety of ingredients including ginger, garlic, and peppers involved in the preparation of kimchee are super protectors which are renowned for their beneficial effect on the immune system. They help in fighting infections and are valuable in curing cold and flu symptoms.
Anti-aging Properties
Another valuable benefit provided by kimchi is its anti-aging qualities, which can be attributed to the presence of antioxidants and vitamin C. A study evaluating the anti-aging activity of kimchee has revealed that it helps in regulating and attenuating the inflammation that speeds up the aging process. The same study also showed promising results with regard to factors like reduced oxidative stress in the cells, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and extended lifespan in the subjects, making kimchi a potent anti-aging component.
Prevents Cancer
Kimchi is a valuable food which helps in reducing the risk of development of various cancers. A study performed on its samples has validated its anti-cancer properties. Cabbage present in it contains healthy flavonoids which are known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Other powerful cancer fighters present in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage are glucosinolates. Glucosinolates break down to form isothiocyanates which are well-known for their effectiveness against cancerous cell growth.
Treats Diabetes
A study conducted on high-fat-diet-fed type-2 diabetics who were given kimchi revealed the anti-diabetic properties of this Korean delicacy. The study showed better glucose tolerance and lower levels of fasting glucose after eating a kimchi-containing diet in the diabetics. It also suggested that this Korean delicacy can prove more useful in diabetes if it is eaten with a normal or low-fat diet instead of high-fat food.
Reduces Gastric Ulcers
Kimchi exerts therapeutic effects in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease caused by Helicobacterpylori bacteria. Research conducted in this regard has shown that the antagonistic activity of kimchi attributes to the abundance of Lactobacillus bacteria which inhibit the harmful pathogens from connecting to the human gastric cancer cells.

Intragastric Balloons Market Research Report: Forecast up to 2025
Intragastric balloons are gastric balloons made of soft biocompatible silicone material generally filled with sterile saline solutions or gas. These are inserted into the stomach through a non-surgical endoscopic process. An intragastric balloon when inflated would reduce the volume of stomach making a person feel fuller quicker and longer. It would also reduce the amount of food intake. This procedure is an option for overweight and obese persons with a body mass index (BMI) ranging from 30 to 70 who are not eligible for weight loss surgery. Permanent healthy changes to diet and exercise is required to ensure success of the intragastric balloon procedure. Primary advantage of this procedure is it helps avoid the risk associated with surgical procedures. However, few disadvantages are that it is not tolerated by all patients and risk of nausea and vomiting. These balloons may also lead to failure of weight loss if a patient does not stick to the diet and exercise.
Obesity is a complex metabolic illness resulting from the accumulation of excessive fat in the body leading to critical health conditions. It is now the new epidemic. According to WHO, over 1 billion people are overweight in the world, of these 50% are severely obese. Obese patients have high chances of developing serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, stroke, and liver diseases. Studies have shown that these life threatening medical conditions can be improved by weight loss.
Major drivers of the intragastric balloons market are preference for minimally invasive technique, non-eligibility of obese patients for the surgical procedure, increased commercial availability of the product, and rise in prevalence of obesity due to diet and lifestyle changes. However, non-coverage of the endoscopic intragastric balloon procedure in insurance, and other side effects such as gastric erosion, development of gastric ulcers, nausea, and vomiting act as major restraints of the intragastric balloons market. Technological advancement and innovation along with reduced cost of the procedure are anticipated to propel the intragastric balloons market.
View Report-
http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/intragastric-balloons-market.html
In terms of product type, the intragastric balloons market has been segmented into single, dual and triple intragastric balloons. The triple intragastric balloons segment is anticipated to be driven by increased weight loss and insertion with less invasive procedures.
Based on filling material, the intragastric balloons market has been segmented into saline filled and gas filled. Introduction of colored sterile saline solution as filler is likely to boost the growth of the market as it helps early detection of deflated balloon, thus avoiding the risk of surgical procedure for removal of the deflated balloon from the intestine. Gas balloons are bacterial resistant and are layered which reduce the risk of deflation of balloons.
In terms of end-user, the intragastric balloons market has been categorized into hospitals, ambulatory clinical services, and clinics. The hospitals segment is anticipated to witness significant growth due to availability of highly skilled professionals and funding.
In terms of region, the intragastric balloons market has been segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. According to data provided by the WHO, over 50% of the world’s population was overweight or obese in 2014. Obesity is higher in regions with large high-income group population. Hence, North America is anticipated to be the fastest growing market, followed by Asia Pacific where the number of people suffering from obesity is increasing significantly. According to the WHO, top five countries with high obese population are the U.S., China, India, Russia, and Brazil.
Key players in the intragastric balloons market are Allurion Technologies, Apollo Endosurgery, Districlass Medical, Helioscopie Medical Implants, Silimed, Lexel, Medsil, Obalon Therapeutics, ReShape Medical, Spatz, Life Partners Europe, and Tulip Medical.
Request a brochure of this report to know what opportunities will emerge in the rapidly evolving Intragastric Balloons Market during 2017- 2025

How Lap Band Surgery Houston Causes Weight Loss
By Jennifer Baker
Weight loss surgery has been around for many years. Newer techniques are being developed everyday to make the process safer and more effective. Of the newest procedures is the lap band surgery, which is a safer alternative compared to the permanent gastric bypass. Lap band surgery Houston is done at friendly costs and is very effective at treating obesity. In case an individual has tried dietary therapy and used drugs to induce weight loss without any success, such as a person is eligible for this kind of surgery. However, the patient must be tolerant to an implant since pain intolerance to such may not allow them to have the procedure carried out on them. The existence of certain medical conditions may prevent one from undergoing this procedure. Hypothyroidism, ulcers, and Crohns disease cause a person not to be a good candidate for the medical procedure. In order to be considered for the procedure, one must clearly understand the risks and benefits of the surgery and be willing to comply with dietary restrictions so as to achieve the long term success. One must also have tried various weight loss programs supervised by physicians over a reasonable amount of time without any success for them to be considered for the lap band surgery. When doing your research about this procedure, you will come across the risks, possible complications and the benefits that arise on undergoing it. There are also a number of side effects that you will need to be aware of and determine if you can handle them before the procedure. The pace at which the results of the treatment come also differs among patients. Weight loss may be faster and more pronounced for some patients unlike others. For one to qualify for this procedure, you have to have a body mass index of 40 and above. The only exception is if you have a BMI of 35 with obesity related conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. You must also be of between 18 and 55 years of age. Upon considering this factors and ascertaining that you qualify, you must then evaluate on the costs associated with this surgery. They include, surgeon fees, hospital expenses, follow up visits and a nutritional requirement to be adhered to. Side effects such as nausea, vomiting and regurgitation are also commonly experienced. Some patients will find that the band has been displaced from its original position and it will need to be adjusted. Leakages from the device and blockage of the passage to the lower stomach are also commonly experienced. Unlike other forms of surgeries, it is unusual for gastric band patients to experience any nutritional deficiencies. It works by sending messages to the brain that the stomach is full when in fact it is only the small crouch at the upper part of the stomach which is full. The brain perceives that the stomach is filled thus enabling the patient to only eat a small portion of food. Over time, the patient is able to lose much of the weight since they do not eat much.

Age, systolic blood pressure, and number of antihypertensive agents were also independent predictors of CAD.
Fasting pancreatic polypeptide may be a potential marker for macrovascular disease, according to study results presented at ENDO 2017: the 99th Annual Meeting & Expo, April 1-4, in Orlando, Florida.
Researchers from the Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust in London, United Kingdom and the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, hypothesized that fasting pancreatic polypeptide would be higher in patients with established coronary artery disease (CAD).
As they noted, CAD is 2 to 3 times more prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes, but is often subclinical and undiagnosed.
A total of 1332 adults with normal glucose tolerance (n=231), prediabetes (n=175), or type 2 diabetes (n=926) were examined, and 10-year Framingham risks were estimated using the calculator that incorporates the lipid profile. The primary end point was CAD, defined as "specialist diagnosis in combination with a record of either regional wall motional abnormality or angiographically proven disease."
CAD was present in 8.7% (n=51) of the men and 3.8% (n=28) of the women. Pancreatic polypeptide significantly correlated with Framingham 10-year risk (R2=0.39; P <.0001) after correcting for estimated glomerular filtration rate.
Log-transformed pancreatic polypeptide was an independent predictor of CAD in logistic regression, specifically in men with type 2 diabetes (odds ratio [OR], 5.95; 95% CI, 1.55-22.81; P <.01) when corrected for age, body mass index, diabetes duration, HbA1c, insulin, number of oral hypoglycemic medications, systolic blood pressure, number of antihypertensive medications, high-density lipoprotein-to-triglyceride ratio, statins, smoking status, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.
Log-transformed pancreatic polypeptide remained an independent predictor in logistic regression with the same covariates in men (OR, 4.50; 95% CI, 1.35-15.02; P <.05).
Age, systolic blood pressure, and number of antihypertensive agents were also independent predictors of CAD, as the investigators expected.
Pancreatic polypeptide had a modest predictive value for CAD, but was superior to waist circumference.
"Fasting [pancreatic polypeptide] may provide a more accurate marker of the contribution of central obesity to vascular risk than external measures of body composition," the researchers concluded.

The Incredible Health Benefits of Turmeric
Most of us know of turmeric (Curcuma longa) as a powdered spice that is an integral part of Indian cuisine and used in curries as well as in almost every Indian dish.
It has been in use for thousands of years in Asia and according to Indian folk culture, the many health benefits of turmeric make it the most effective nutritional and medicinal herb known to mankind.
Turmeric is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. Highly branched, the plant grows up to the height of about 1 meter with yellow to orange, cylindrical aromatic rhizomes (underground stems), which are boiled and dried to make turmeric powder as we know it. When available, fresh turmeric roots may also be used, both in culinary setting as well as for its therapeutic value.
Initially, turmeric was used as a dye and later as a key ingredient in Asian dishes and after its therapeutic properties was discovered, as an herbal remedy. Its use as a coloring and flavoring agent, for cosmetic purposes and as a medicinal herb dates back to the Vedic times. In both Indian and Chinese systems of medicine, it is considered one of the most potent anti-inflammatory herbs.
It has a slightly bitter and a peppery flavor with a fragrance that reminds one of ginger and orange. The spice does not have any calories (5gms = 16 calories) and has a very low glycemic index. It is a rich source of manganese, iron, potassium, copper, magnesium, dietary fiber and vitamin B6.
Health Benefits of Turmeric/Curcumin
Modern science has woken up to the therapeutic value and health benefits of turmeric only recently. Turmeric contains curcuminoid, a group of chemical compounds that are natural phenols and produce pronounced yellow color. Curcumin, the principal curcuminoid of turmeric is also its active and primary pharmacological ingredient. The health benefits of curcumin have been studied, established and well documented.
While researchers are not sure of the mechanism of action through which the body is helped by the health benefits of curcumin, they believe that most of its therapeutic value is derived from its anti-inflammatory effect and antioxidant properties. It inhibits a major inflammatory agent known as NF kappa-B. As an antioxidant, it prevents cellular damage by neutralizing free radicals.
The added advantage of turmeric is that it has been found to be safe in large doses and its active ingredient, curcumin, is effective in very small doses, even in concentrations as low as 0.25 percent.
This means that the health benefits of the curcumin in tumeric are beneficial even when used as a coloring and flavoring agent in foods like curries and other dishes and the side effects of turmeric, even in large doses, are virtually nil.
Potent Anti-inflammatory
Studies have established that one of the major health benefits of curcumin is it is as good an anti-inflammatory agent, if not better, than drugs such as hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone. While these drugs have serious side effects such as intestinal bleeding, ulcers and decrease in white blood cell count, curcumin is not associated with any toxicity.
Curcumin is safe and well tolerated, due to the lack of side effects of turmeric, and has been proven to be an effective treatment for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). IBD is a group of inflammatory conditions associated with the colon and small intestine. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the most prominent types of IBD.
In an animal study, mice were given an inflammatory agent that normally induces colitis. It was seen that mice given curcumin were well protected. It was also observed that mice given curcumin lost less weight and showed much less signs of colitis such as ulceration and thickened intestinal walls as compared to mice that were not given curcumin.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
As an antioxidant, curcumin combats free radicals, which are primarily high-energy particles, usually an oxygen molecule that has lost an electron. Free radicals travel wildly through the body and damage healthy cells and cell membranes. Free radicals are associated with many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Damage cause by free radicals leads to inflammation of joints and joint pains and eventually to joints become dysfunctional.
In a study that compared curcumin with phenylbutazone, curcumin showed comparable efficacy in reducing joint swelling and reduced duration of morning stiffness. It is considered one of the major health benefits of turmeric that it has proven to be an effective treatment for RA because it has a dual anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. Taken regularly, turmeric alleviates pain in patients with RA and other conditions that affect joints.
Boosts Immunity and Delays Aging
Did you know that curcumin is a stronger antioxidant than both vitamins C and E? Curcumin enhances antibody responses that may boost immunity, control cholesterol levels and delay the aging process. These claims are substantiated by a number of studies.
Researchers at Department of Experimental Therapeutics, University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center reported that the ability of curcumin to modulate the immune system is the primary reason for beneficial effects of the compound on patients with asthma, atherosclerosis (fatty deposits inside arterial walls), diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative condition marked by deterioration of cognitive abilities along with behavioral changes and declining activities of daily living. Curcumin decreases formation of beta-amyloid plaques, a waxy translucent complex protein resembling starch that results from degeneration of tissue.
Beta-amyloid plaques are considered to be the major cause for occurrence of Alzheimer’s. Curcumin also delays neuron degradation, which along with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect improves memory in patients with Alzheimer’s.
Prevents Liver Disease
Data from studies conducted on the health benefits of curcumin reveals that it may be an effective treatment of chronic liver diseases.
In a Mexican study on rats, curcumin demonstrated that it effectively prevents acute liver damage. Here again, it is due to its antioxidant action and inhibition of the inflammatory agent, NF kappa-B. It stimulates the production of cytokines, molecules that serve to regulate the immune system, which boost the body’s inherent capacity of fighting disease.
Another study published in Fundamental & Clinical Pharmacology, demonstrated that another one of the health benefits of turmeric is that it may prevent and reverse liver cirrhosis by its ability to reduce expression of TGF-beta.
Diabetes Type 2 Prevention
A study conducted by Thai researchers and published in Diabetes Care journal reveals people at high risk of developing diabetes could benefit and prevent occurrence of diabetes type 2 by taking turmeric capsules.
The reason was provided by Drew Tortoriello, an endocrinologist and research scientist at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center. According to him, this is due to the ability of turmeric to reduce insulin resistance.
There is a case here for regular intake of turmeric. This is due to low bioavailability of curcumin, which can be addressed by regular ingestion by way of turmeric capsules or by adding turmeric powder to food.
Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a common congenital disease in which the child’s lungs, intestines and pancreas get clogged with thick mucus due to a defect or mutations in a single gene. In a 2004 study published in the journal Science, curcumin was shown to correct the expression of the gene that causes cystic fibrosis, a fatal disease that affects thousands of Americans.
Additional Health Benefits of Curcumin & Turmeric
Digestive Disorders
Health benefits of turmeric also include its effect on digestion. It is commonly recommended for treating a weak digestive system and constipation. It promotes digestion and is a natural carminative. It can be added to food for relieving gas in the alimentary tract and managing symptoms of colic, flatulence or griping.
According to Ayurveda, its medicinal properties include promotion of discharge of bile from the system and purging it downward. It enhances the excretion of bile via the gallbladder, which aids in digestion of fats.
Turmeric for Skin Health
Turmeric is commonly used as a home remedy for healing small cuts and wounds. Applied topically, its antibacterial and antiviral properties hasten wound healing.
Dry skin, usually caused by excessive use of soaps and exposure to sun and wind, often leads to cracks in the skin. When the cracks begin to itch, it often leads to sores and bleeding.
Also, allergic skin reactions due to allergens in plants, chemicals and food have a similar detrimental effect of the skin. Turmeric creams not only reduce inflammation, redness and itchiness but also keep your skin moist and glowing.
Skin Cancer
While turmeric will not cure skin cancer, it may help in alleviating certain symptoms associated with it. Homemade turmeric paste or commercially prepared turmeric ointment applied topically on the affected area will help relieve itching and stop bad odor caused by the condition.
Applications in Ayurveda – Turmeric with Milk
Bone Health: Turmeric with milk is a standard Ayurvedic prescription for bone health. Consult any Ayurvedic practitioner (in India there is a professional degree for it: BAMS or Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Sciences) for any bone or joint related problem including fractures and she or he is sure to prescribe turmeric.
Nine times out of ten you will be asked to mix two teaspoons of turmeric powder in a glass of hot milk and drink two glasses twice a day. As we all know milk strengthens bones. When combined with milk, the health benefits of curcumin provide additional benefits. Per se turmeric may not join a broken bone, but its medicinal effect speeds up the healing process.
Turmeric’s ability to reduce pain may help relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Turmeric Face Masks: Milk and turmeric both have antioxidant properties. Turmeric paste made by mixing a little of milk makes an excellent face mask. It helps repair damage done to skin by free radicals. Leave the mask for an hour and then wash with cold water and you will find your skin glowing.
In fact, applying turmeric mask on the bride as well the bridegroom is an important Hindu ritual during weddings. The idea is that both should look their best throughout the wedding, which often lasts for two to three days.
Turmeric paste can also be used as a cream to reduce localized inflammation caused by acne, eczema, psoriasis and burns. Turmeric mixed with aloe vera makes a soothing paste for treating sunburns.
Common Cold and Persistent Cough: This is another time tested Ayurvedic application and one of the more welcome health benefits of turmeric. Turmeric milk is a much better and a safer remedy for reducing symptoms of common cold.
Taken regularly, it may even reduce the frequency of occurrence of common cold. A cup of hot turmeric milk three times a day is good for treating a cough that refuses to go away.
Dental problems
Toothpaste containing turmeric is available in the market. A very effective remedy for taking care of dental problems is to mix turmeric powder and salt and make a paste by adding a little of any edible oil, preferably mustard oil. Rub teeth and gums with this paste twice daily for treating bleeding gums and gingivitis.
Precautions
There are no side effects of turmeric when applied on the skin. However, take care while using turmeric powder in face masks and creams because turmeric stains skin and clothes. While skin stains will go away on their own or after washing, turmeric stains on clothes are difficult to remove.
Too much of anything should be avoided. Although turmeric does not have any known side effects, too much of ingestion of any herb is not good. Excessive intake of turmeric may cause nausea or diarrhea.
Turmeric is an anticoagulant. It is advisable that you inform your doctor that you are taking turmeric supplements before any medication is prescribed to you as well as before any surgical procedure is undertaken.
Which Turmeric is Best
You can buy fresh turmeric roots and make turmeric powder at home. This may not be always possible as it may be difficult to find fresh turmeric roots all year along in your part of the world. Ready made turmeric powder is equally good as long as you buy pure, preferably organic, turmeric powder from an authentic source.
There are also turmeric creams, lotions and ointments available in the market. You need to exercise the same caution while buying them; it must be pure without any chemical additives and from an authentic manufacturer and a trusted source.
Efficacy, Safety, and Side Effects of Turmeric
Turmeric, which until recently was used in Indian kitchens and for its therapeutic value by Indians and Chinese, has now become increasingly popular in the western world.
Modern science has recognized the myriad of health benefits of curcumin and its medicinal properties, a fact which is evident from the patent war that took place a few years ago.
Indians fought tooth and nail and succeeded in keeping turmeric out of the clutches of the big pharmaceutical conglomerates.
There is a valid reason why turmeric is best when taken regularly. The major pharmacological agent in turmeric, curcumin, is not readily bioavailable and the best way of deriving full benefits is to add turmeric powder to food. In the event that is not acceptable to you, you can opt for turmeric supplements easily available over-the-counter as soft gel capsules.
Because the side effects of turmeric are virtually non-existent, turmeric is a highly valuable herb in the treatment and prevention of many health conditions.
As a matter of fact, the most amazing of the many health benefits of turmeric may be that it has such significant curative and preventive value in so many areas of health. Even those who haven’t been diagnosed with any ailment can benefit from its ability to prevent many medical conditions.
