An Introduction to Thermal Imaging

The technique of turning infrared (IR) radiation (heat) into visual pictures that reflect the spatial distribution of temperature differences in a scene observed by a thermal camera is known as thermal imaging. The imaging camera has an infrared detector, generally in the form of a focal plane array of micron-sized detecting components or "pixels." The detector array can be cooled or uncooled, depending on the materials used and the intended application of the camera. The scene radiation is focused into the detector array by a lens mechanism, and the images is displayed by suitable processing circuits. The atmosphere attenuates infrared light, and the degree of attenuation relies heavily on the local atmospheric conditions at the time the imaging is acquired.
Thermal Imaging is critical to match the detector response to one of the two atmospheric windows: mid-wave infrared (MWIR) or long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) (LWIR). To extract useful data on the detection, recognition, and identification of animals of interest in the field, it is critical to capture the finest photos available. The military produced the first thermal imaging cameras in the 1950s; they were enormous, heavy, and highly expensive.
