Right to Repair Therapy

For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

Today I fixed my expensive bluetooth earbuds. Their batteries couldn't hold a charge for a full hour. (Turns out this was due to a botched firmware update and totally Sony's fault!)

This is the guide I used:

We tried a course of new firmware but the patients continued to deteriorate (as the specialist predicted.) Surgical intervention was unavoidable. The patients are currently convalescing in the charging dock. The procedure was smooth and they will only have minor scars, but a full recovery cannot be guaranteed until they reach full power and take one last course of software updates.

Surgery was successful. The seams won’t be the same ever. But it’s only noticeable if I look for it.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

The good news is my smart typewriter arrived, the bad news is its battery is deceased

#basically i tried to turn it on right out of the box and it did not respond at all #so i put it on charge and left it for like 10 minutes; at which point it did turn right on when i pressed the power button #i did the quick start stuff and postbox works fine; send to email works fine; all the keys seem to work and it did a firmware update #which fixed the tiny bit of lag the screen had at first #i’m constantly hitting the wrong keys but i do that on any keyboard til i’m used to it. it’s a nice keyboard #the only thing is when i checked how charging was going just now; the battery percentage was still showing 1%. 🧐#it’s been charging for well over an hour and a half #i did a restart and switched to what i think is an optimal charger #(i.e. the usb cable that came with the device + the usb-c wall plug that came with my ipad #not the charging lead for my earbuds + a random wonky samsung plug which is what i was using before)#i’m also going to fully stop bothering it until probably like late in the evening at minimum #i SHOULD be working technically #in my defence i didn’t expect it to arrive so soon. tracking never updated so i thought it was stuck at a random international depot #when actually it made it to heathrow like 2 days ago #look i’m just going to try and count my blessings that everything aside from the battery is working beautifully right now #and if i was a lithium battery left in transit for like 10 days i’d probably die too #worst case scenario i’m just going to have to exclusively use the thing while it’s plugged in. and it has a long cable.. i’ll be fine #personal

I would very much like to infoblast about Raven Beak's powersuit upgrade library with all the optimizations, QoL tweaks, security features, and the myriad integration systems Samus is currently lacking with her babby suit, but alas. Time restrictions.

#txt #not art #don't get me wrong it's a good suit. but samus is running on old hardware (ruins test suit) that's literally been dissected (Fusion)#and augmented by comparatively inferior (at least in Raven Beak's 'humble' opinion) GalFed tech #and she's had her arsenal stripped down to the hard-coded essentials more times than should be possible for any reasonable warrior #barring the whole 'Metroid powers ate my firmware updates' thing from Dread #Raven Beak looks at that technical hodge podge of a suit which can apparently have some features remotely restricted by the Feds at will #and he's like 'girl you need an upgrade'#he can understand the whole Metroid DNA eating your suit thing but the rest of it he chalks up to the powersuit equivalent #of a faulty hard drive being dropped on the hard dirty ground and all of the data within going the way of the Titanic #he's like a gazillion years old so all he sees is an eight year old dropping their Gameboy Advance SP with Pokemon Crystal in the game slot #staring blankly at the screen as they boot up the system to find that their entire save is gone

I’m a hater of the freewrite line of products because I just feel like what is being offered is not worth the price and also it’s bloated with features and firmware that shouldn’t be necessary for a “distraction free” writing device. Like I feel like it’s more a way for people to fetishize writing than it is for them to actually write. Like hot take maybe but I don’t think a distraction free device should connect to the internet at all? There are ways to get your documents onto a computer without the Internet. I know this because I’m the owner of one of these bad boys

And honestly I don’t use it as much as I’d want, but mostly because I’m also very into mechanical keyboards and so while having basically an electronic typewriter is nice, I don’t prefer the actual typing experience. Like if there was one thing that would make me actually spend the stupid amount of money a freewrite goes for, it’d be if they made one with a fully customizable mechanical keyboard, but as far as I know you can’t swap out the switches on a freewrite so I’m not tempted to even attempt that

So I’ve been getting back into using my Alphasmart (shown above) and have been looking at stuff lately and apparently between when I got this guy a few years ago and now, someone had created a mechanical keyboard mod for the Alphasmart 3000????

So I just got a 3000 off eBay and now I’m gonna be having a new project because this is like the IDEAL scenario for me

#also imagine my annoyance when I saw freewrite’s ‘alpha’ model #and then all the Alphasmart Neo 2’s shot up in price for SOME REASON #I do like e ink screens I’ll admit that so if freewrite made basically just a mechanical keyboard with an e ink screen attached #I might be tempted to consider #but it’s like #I don’t want to use the cloud actually or have to worry about updating firmware
