The Sacred Valley
Impulsive like me, Irene booked a last minute trip to come visit me in Cusco. Only a few days before she left, Jonathan decided to tag along as well. They arrived on Thursday morning and I met up with them briefly before their walking tour.
We connected again for a romantic dinner at Rucula where we sat and chatted for hours. It was so nice to have them in town! For dessert, we met up with Garrett at Qucharitas to split some peculiar nitrogen ice cream flavors along with picarones which is a type of donut made with sweet potato, squash, and star anise. That makes it healthy right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Friday morning I actually had a lot of work to do, but I finally managed to make it out to a not so quick lunch with Irene. Later, a bunch of the tribers met up at the San Blas Market to start off our cooking class. Our chef gave us a tour, which was needed due to the sheer size of the market and the variety of its offerings.
Tumblr media
Once we got to the kitchen, we made maracuyá sours - cocktails with ice, pisco, passionfruit, eggwhites, and simple syryp. For the appetizer we assembled a Japanese-influenced ceviche and for the main course we made quinoa-encrusted oyster mushrooms/alpaca. With all the jokes back and forth, we never thought we would make it out of there to catch our bus to the Sacred Valley. We actually had to skip dessert!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The majority of the group rented a lavish house together in the Sacred Valley. In the morning, chefs made a nice breakfast spread before we got ready to get on our tour bus. Due to a series of miscommunications and unfortunate circumstances, the bus was an hour late so some of us took a stroll around the town of Urquillos. The town appeared to be run by stray dogs although there was soon to be a mayoral race which was split on the important issues - corn vs. cows.
Tumblr media
Our first adventure for the day was an ATV tour to Moray which is a terraced architectural Inca site. Along the way, we got a great view of the landscape and saw a variety of livestock. Next, we climbed to the top of the Ollantaytambo ruins which signifies the beginning of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last stop of the trip was the Maras Salt Mines which are composed of over 5,000 pools and were established over 500 years ago. Back at the house, chefs cooked us dinner and we started heating the wood-fired hot tub. We spent the majority of the night in the tub, which we squeezed 10 of us into! The night ended with s'mores around the fire pit.
Tumblr media
Sunday was spent at Mountain Views Maras which is a glamping spot with, as expected, expansive mountain views, a nice restaurant, and alpacas, llamas, and horses. All afternoon, we fed the animals with corn husks and did photoshoots. It was so special being able to be in such close proximity to these big animals for a prolonged period of time.
Tumblr media
On our way back home we stopped at a textile place where they gave us a demo on how the yarn is made and dyed.

I have been thinking about #Peru and the surrounding areas quite a bit lately but it being featured in the Sunday Chicago Tribune has to be a sign. I think 2017 is a great year to check it off the #BucketList. #Travel is a must in life at this point and so rewarding on so many cultural levels. #macchupicchu #Inca #Urquillos (at Macchu Picchu)

Inca Trail: the most famous trek in Peru
heard about the Inca Trail, an unforgettable walk! The Inca Trail 4 days is the most famous trek in Peru, it is an unforgettable trek that it deserves, since it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, only 500 people have the opportunity to practice each one. day in Peru, and you have to reserve your place very, very much in advance. Supply less than demand, the price is now quite high. The Inca Trail or "Inca Trail" that leads to Machu Picchu hike is only a small section of the Qhapaq Ñan, the "Great Road" in Quechua, a network of more than 40,000 km that crosses the Andes and the Pacific coast to the south from present-day Colombia to the northernmost limit of the empire south of what is now Santiago de Chile.
The Qhapaq Ñan crosses 6 countries in South America in almost 6,000 km. It crosses Colombia, the equator, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. If Peru attracts the largest number of tourists on the Inca trail, it is because it is lucky to have the best preserved section, almost 80 km, with forts throughout the trek. , post offices, temples, "tambo" (you could almost say the stops and service stations along the way!) agricultural terraces, bridges and numerous structures of which only a few vestiges remain.
Inca Trail: a bit of history
The Inca road network was born from the merger of all the roads traced by the various pre-Columbian civilizations, previous to the Incas, such as the civilizations, Mochica, Chavín, Caral, Nazca, etc. The Wari culture would have made a first reunification of all these routes in an enormous network of communication routes. The Incas only had to strengthen the roads, reconnect, consolidate and protect them to build their colossal empire. The main axis of the Inca trail is 6000 kilometers, a path that begins in San Juan de Pasto in Colombia, south of Santiago de Chile! It is thanks to this path that the Incas were able to establish their economic and political power, with the capital Cuzco at its center, the navel of the Inca empire.
Tumblr media
It is difficult to imagine what Qhapaq Ñan represents, it is not just a simple trail in the middle of the mountains ... In some places, it is more than 20 meters wide, it winds through the valleys to connect the cities. , temples, mines, etc. and its altitude can go from 800 to 5000 meters. The Incas have in certain vast sections paved with rocks, huge stairs carved into the mountainside, etc. The network brings together a set of structures unique in the world.
Today it is necessary to improve the Qhapaq Nan and protect it from the wear of time, natural erosion and especially from the impact of man. It is important to maintain this route, which allowed the unification of all Andean cultures and which gave rise to one of the most majestic cultures in the world and, without a doubt, the best administratively organized at that time. , compared to those in Europe.
The Inca Trail in Peru, the best preserved part! Peru is fortunate to have the sections in the best state of conservation of all the Qhapaq Ñan. One of the most beautiful sections, over 80 kilometers between Huari and the second largest city in the Inca empire Huánuco Pampa, it is simply wonderful for anyone interested in the history of Andean civilizations. You can see paved roads, bridges, ruins, channels, etc.
There are many sections in good condition in the Lake Titicaca region and we have discovered one in which we are the only ones who take visitors there. The Qhapaq Ñan de Collasuyu passed through the great temple of Wiracocha near the town of Raqchi and it is possible to travel one kilometer near the temple site. There is also a very beautiful section of the royal road that led to the palace of the Emperor Wiracocha Inca in Huchuy Qosqo. Another very beautiful section leads from Chinchero to the Sacred Valley in the town of Urquillos. The most beautiful classic Inca trail and, without a doubt, the longest is the one that allowed dozens of Andean pilgrims to descend on the coast to the great religious complex of Pachacamac, near Lima. Small vestiges that allow us to imagine the magnitude of
Finally, the four stages of the "Inca Trail" in Peru. The 40 kilometers that, from the Sacred Valley, take you directly to the site of Machu Picchu tours built during the reign of Pachacutec, around 1440, are simply magical. These routes are now more effectively protected by the Peruvian government and classified by UNESCO to prevent deterioration and allow a limited number of privileged visitors to travel them. and immerse yourself in the heart of the Inca civilization walking to its most emblematic city: Machu Picchu.

Day Four of YOLO/FOMO Trip: Quick to Chinchero from Cusco (used to be the center of the Incan Empire) where we saw sacred terraces (super filtration-set up with nutrient-rich soil courtesy of bat poop) with sculpted condors and pumas made out of small boulders, (remains at least since the Spanish conquered - the condor represents the heavens, the puma represents the present/earth, and the snake represents the underworld), learned that Peru has 4,000 types of potatoes (the Bank of Potatoes is in Lima), and saw a weaving demonstration (wowza they are super resourceful for dyes and their designs holy cow). Then we started our 5 mile hike through the Sacred Valley of the Incas (12,375 ft/ 3,762 m), to Urquillos (9,573 ft/ 2,918 m). After arriving we drove to Ollantaytambo, where we saw a Temple of the Sun and learned that when the Spanish wanted to conquer the fortress, the puppet Incan ruler purposely took the long way around (aka not cutting through the valley) so that they wouldn’t find and destroy Machu Picchu. Quick reminder that many, many times in history, a way for a new civilization to take over an existing one, including imposing their new religion, was to destroy or build on top of the pre existing civilization’s religious sites. #CarsCommunicateOnlyWithHorns #DogsLookLikeTheyLiveOnTheStreetBecauseTheyBasicallyDo #TheyAreCaredForByFamiliesButAreNotAllowedInside #NotLikeOurTrulyDomesticatedPetsAtLeast #ButPeruviansDoActuallyKeepCatsIndoors #CocaTea #AltitudeHelper #JustDontTakeADrugTestForAtLeastSixWeeks #PeruvianPassionfruit #PeruvianOreos #MarchingBandDays #GratefulForTheRelativeEaseOfTravel #VeryHardForSouthAmericansAmongOthersToTravel #TomatoesAreRelatedToPotatoes #ThereIsSuchAThingAsDomesticatedCrops #SOMuchWater #RidgesForDays #TectonicPlates #ControlledCrackingAtTheTemple #NaturalStaples #HandCarvedBouldersThatFitLikeAGlove #WhenThatSunHitsJuuuuustRight #EquinoxesAreTheMost #LiterallyEnlightening #SacredSites #ThoseIncansWereSmartCookies #PleaseLetMeViewYourWaresInPeace #BrokenButWorkingSpanish #CatepillarThing #AkaCocoon #CocoonOfWarmth #EducarLaMenteSinEducarElCorazónNoEsEducación #Aka #ToEducateTheMindWithoutEducatingTheHeartIsNotAnEducation

Montmartre is a village... but there is so many things to discover there. Here is La Maison Rose, an old modest caff where the artists were used to eat in 1910, immortalized thanks to the paintings of Maurice Urquillo. Nowadays this is a touristic restaurant and one of the most famous houses in Montmartre. You could visit it by walking few minutes from our hostels and hotels in Montmartre: #montclairhostel #villagehostel #leregentmontmartre #vintagehostel #smartplace #hotelrocroy #avalonhotel #montmartre #lamaisonrose #paris #famous (à La Maison Rose)
