All 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse, Rescued After 17 days

A team of 41 workers were rescued from a collapsed tunnel beneath the Himalayas on Tuesday, marking the completion of a remarkable and dangerous rescue operation spanning several weeks. These men had been trapped for 17 days while recovery teams worked to create an escape route through rock and debris. Despite encountering several technical challenges along the way, the final few meters of the route were carefully drilled by hand.

Video footage captured the moment when Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand state, greeted the workers during the scenes of triumph as they emerged from the tunnel. During a press conference held on Tuesday night, Dhami confirmed the good health of all 41 workers.

What did the Chief Minister say in the Press Conference?

“Given their exposure to an extremely different environment, we’ll take note of the doctor’s advice and closely monitor them. No one is in critical condition,” stated the chief minister. “None of them exhibit signs of weakness or fever, they are all in good health. Despite the provision of stretchers, they chose to crawl out on their own,” he added, extending gratitude to the workers,engineers, and government officials involved in arranging the successful rescue mission.

The Chief Minister further announced that each of the rescued workers would receive checks amounting to 1,00,000 rupees. He further stated, “We will also request the company to grant these 41 workers a leave to reunite with their families for a duration of 15 days, 20 days, or even a month.”

Death toll rises to 91, rescue work on full swing in Punjab, Uttarakhand on high alert

Tuesday was a disastrous day for Uttarakhand as the twin storms lashed over the state causing heavy rain. Monsoon combined with the western disturbance is causing heavy rainfall across India. In Uttarakhand on Tuesday, it killed 8 people including 3 Gangotri pilgrims from Madhya Pradesh.

Previously, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh saw the wrath of the weather but there was sunshine today delivering relief. The authorities in these states got a chance to gear up the relief, rescue, and road restoration works.

There were 21 fresh death cases reported due to the torrential rains in the region taking the death toll to 91 in the rain-affected areas.

Many new areas were added to the list of flood-hit areas in Punjab including Fazilka where Sutlej river water was released. Further, in UP, Agra & Prayagraj were placed on the flood alert map after the Yamuna and Ganga river started flowing above the danger mark.

Landslides became a common site in Uttarakhand where rocks rolled down the mountains over vehicles crushing a minibus on the highway at Gangnani in Uttarkashi district, killing three pilgrims from MP’s Dewas who were on their way back from the Gangotri shrine on Monday night. Heavy rain was recorded between Monday night and Tuesday morning in Uttarakhand “The spell will continue, particularly in the Kumaon region, , over the next 24 hours,” said Bikram Singh, director of the Met office in Dehradun.

The death toll at Uttarakhand’s Draupadi Ka Danda avalanche rises to 19

The death toll at the avalanche hit Draupadi Ka Danda II peak in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district has reached 19 by this morning.

Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar reported that "A total of 19 bodies have been recovered from the crevice. Efforts will be made to bring the bodies to Matli helipad by Advanced Light Helicopter today. Total 30 rescue teams deployed."

Earlier this week, a team of mountaineers from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi went missing at the Draupadi Ka Danda 2 peek after meeting an avalanche. The team was returning after summiting Draupadi Ka Danda II peak.

chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his condolences to the grieved families on Wednesday.

"The rescue teams are working continuously and I am monitoring the situation", the chief minister said, according to ANI.

The district administration of Uttarkashi is working day and night to rescue those surviving. The administration has also banned trekking and mountaineering activities for three days due to the meteorological department's rain and snow alert for the next few days.

Nayab Subedar Anil Kumar, who manage to have a narrow escape from the depths of the thick snow, had an interview with a leading news house and recalled the horrific experience.

He said, "Within seconds, everything was enveloped by a thick cloud of snow."

He is one of the 4 mountaineers who were brought down by the rescuers and offered medical aid at the local district hospital. "There were 42 climbers in the team, including 34 trainees. I was leading them. Instructors Savita Kanswal and Naumi Rawat were behind me while the rest followed them," said the instructor.

“Just then, the avalanche hit and buried everything under thick snow within seconds," he added.
