Maha polls: No discrepancies found in VVPAT voter-slips count, says ECI

Setting at rest all doubts, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday said that no discrepancies were found in the counting of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) voting slips in the recently-concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Supreme Court Reserves Verdict On Batch Of Pleas Seeking Cross-Verification Of Votes Cast Using EVMs With VVPAT

Supreme Court reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas seeking complete cross-verification of votes cast using EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT).

PTI reported that a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta reserved its verdict after hearing the response of Election Commission on the pleas.

The petitioners have also sought reversal of the poll panel’s 2017 decision to replace the transparent glass on VVPAT machines with an opaque glass through which a voter can see the slip only when the light is on for seven seconds. Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the Election Commission, explained the process of how an EVM functions. Advocate Prashant Bhushan and senior advocate Gopal Sankararanarayanan appeared for the petitioners. Other lawyers represented the intervenors.

On April 16, the top court had deprecated criticism of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and calls for reverting to ballot papers, saying the electoral process in India is a “humongous task” and attempts should not be made to “bring down the system”.

Meanwhile, Election Commission of India informed the Supreme Court that allegations of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) showing one extra vote during a mock poll in Kerala’s Kasaragod were false.

“These news reports are false. We have verified the allegation from the district collector and it appears that they are false. We will submit a detailed report to the court,” senior deputy election commissioner Nitesh Kumar Vyas told a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta. Vyas was present in the courtroom to apprise the bench about the functioning of EVMs.

Delhi Election Results Tomorrow: AAP, BJP In Intense Battle For Glory

Several exit polls have given the BJP an edge over the AAP, which has been ruling in Delhi since 2015.

New Delhi:

Counting of votes for the Delhi assembly polls will take place on Saturday to decide whether the AAP comes to power for a fourth term or the BJP forms a government in the national capital after 27 years.

The Congress is also looking for some gains after drawing a blank in the last two elections.

Several exit polls have given the BJP an edge over the AAP, which has been ruling in Delhi since 2015.

The counting process will begin at 8 am with early trends likely to start coming in from initial hours. According to the Election Commission, 60.54 per cent votes were polled on Wednesday.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva has claimed his party will win nearly 50 seats. The AAP has rejected the exit poll predictions, asserting it will form the government again with its convener Arvind Kejriwal becoming chief minister for the fourth time.

Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Alice Vaz said that a total of 5,000 personnel, including counting supervisors, counting assistants, micro-observers, and supporting staff trained for the process, will be deployed on Saturday for the counting of votes.

In view of the fairness of the counting process, a random selection of five VVPATs (voter verifiable paper audit trails) will be done in each assembly constituency.

In a snowballing controversy, Lt Governor VK Saxena on Friday ordered an anti corruption branch (ACB) probe into allegations by AAP leaders that the BJP had attempted to poach its candidates by offering them Rs 15 crore and ministerial berth.

The AAP leaders have accused the BJP of trying to create an illusion in their favour based on exit poll predictions, but trying to poach AAP's candidates with chances of victory.

The BJP has demanded that AAP retract its charges and tender an apology or face legal action.

Delhi BJP general secretary Vishnu Mittal also wrote to the Lt Governor requesting for an ACB probe into AAP's charges. Soon after the LG's order, an ACB team visited Kejriwal in connection with the matter.

Earlier on Friday, Kejriwal held a meeting with all party candidates and asserted that the AAP will form its government, while alleging that the opposition is using exit polls to create "psychological pressure" and attempting to execute "Operation Lotus".

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai said that under Kejriwal's guidance, all candidates presented their ground reports, which indicated that AAP is set to win over 50 seats decisively, with a close contest on 7-8 seats.

The AAP established its dominance in Delhi's political map routing both the BJP and Congress in 2015 Assembly polls, winning 67 of the 70 Assembly seats.

The party again formed its government in 2020, winning 62 seats and decimating the opposition BJP and Congress.

A victory for the AAP will establish Kejriwal's dominance in Delhi and enhance his political stature nationally.

However, if the BJP wins the polls, it will not only be back to power in Delhi after a long gap of 27 years, but also succeed in breaking the spell of AAP and Kejriwal that it has been vying for a decade.

The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years in a row till 2013, is striving to stage a comeback after failing to win a single seat in the previous two elections.

Election Commission : CEC Rebuffs Influencing Charge, Hails World Record 642 Million Voters ; Says Postal Ballots Count First ; Responds To ‘laapata gentlemen’ Memes On Social Media

Citing the Conduct of Election Rules, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the count of postal ballots will start first across all counting centres and asserted that there was “no doubt about it”.

Responding to questions at a press conference as reported by PTI , he said after half-an-hour of the start of the postal ballot count, the counting of votes recorded in the electronic voting machines will commence.

CEC Rajiv Kumar says, “We have created a world record of 642 million voters. This is 1.5 times voters of all G7 countries and 2.5 times voters of 27 countries in EU.”

The Election Commission of India gives a standing ovation to all voters who took part in Lok Sabha elections 2024.

A delegation of the opposition parties had on Sunday met the Commission to demand that postal ballot count should start first and the results of postal ballots should be announced first.

“Rules clearly state (Rule 54A) that postal ballot count will start first. On all centres in the country it will start first, no doubt about it. After half-an-hour we start the EVM count. So, there are three countings which are happening simultaneously — it happened in the 2019 elections, it happened in all the assembly polls held thereafter. It happened yesterday also in case of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim assembly (vote count). We can’t change anything mid course. Why can’t we change, because it is compliant with the rules,” he said.

He said the postal ballot count and then the EVM count and finally the marching of VVPT slips with EVM results will continue.

In majority of the booths, the number of postal ballot is less. It will automatically end first, he pointed out.

Since 2019, VVPAT (paper-trail machine) slips from five randomly selected polling stations per assembly constituency (or segment in cases of Lok Sabha seats) are matched with the EVM count for greater transparency.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar referred to various memes doing rounds on social media, describing the Election Commission as ‘laapata gentlemen’, asserting that he and fellow commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Sing Sandhu were “never out” and were “always here”.

Social media users had targeted the Commission for allegedly being absent amid the model code violations by top leaders during campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

The memes were based on a recent film titled ‘Laapata Ladies’.

Addressing a press conference on the eve of the counting of votes on Tuesday, Kumar said in a lighter vein that now people will see memes on the social media with a tag line that ‘laapata gentlemen’ are back.

“We were never out, we were always here. We chose to interact with you through our press notes. This was the first time we issued close to a 100 press notes and advisories all put together,” he said.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar dared the opposition to share evidence of allegations that returning officers and district magistrates were influenced to vitiate the poll process so the panel could take action against them.
