Vanilla Forums es un software para crear foros escrito en php, es de código abierto y destaca por ofrecer todas las características necesarias para ejecutar un foro de tipo profesional y con éxito. Es fácil de instalar y utilizar, ademas viene con muchos complementos y temas para elegir. En este tutorial, vemos cómo instalar un servidor Vanilla Forums Open en CentOS7. Los requisitos para instalar nuestro servidor son simples de cumplir, los enumeramos. Un servidor o VPS (en este articulo usaremos CentOS 7). Instalar LAMP o LEMP (Linux, Apache / Nginx, MySQL / MariaDB, PHP). En el ejemplo de este articulo instalaremos LAMP. Acceso raíz SSH completo o usuario con privilegios de sudo. Sin más preámbulos vamos directamente al articulo.

Antes de comenzar actualizamos el sistema e instalamos "unzip" sudo yum update yum install unzip Una vez actualizado el sistema reinicia y comenzamos. reboot   Instalar LAMP Empezamos por instalar Apache. yum install httpd Ahora el servidor de base de datos MariaDB. yum install mariadb-server Una vez haya completado la instalación de MariaDB, la aseguramos. sudo mysql_secure_installation Nota: Si te pide que ingreses la contraseña raíz actual de MariaDB, simplemente pulsa la tecla una vez, ya que no se establece una contraseña por defecto al instalar MariaDB. Aparecerán una serie de preguntas en la pantalla, te recomiendo que respondas "sí" a todas con el carácter "Y". ejemplo... Remove anonymous users? (Press y|Y for Yes, any other key for No) : Y Disallow root login remotely? (Press y|Y for Yes, any other key for No) : Y Remove test database and access to it? Proseguimos.   Descargar Vanilla Forums Antes de descargar Vanilla visita "este enlace" y te aseguras de cual es la ultima versión, al escribir este manual la ultima versión estable es la 3.1. sudo wget https://open.vanillaforums.com/get/vanilla-core-3.1.zip Extraemos los archivos en /var/www. sudo unzip vanilla-core-3.1.zip -d /var/www Podemos borrar el archivo descargado. rm vanilla-core-3.1.zip Modificamos el nombre de la carpeta con el comando mv. mv /var/www/package /var/www/vanilla Concedemos los permisos correctos. sudo chown -R apache:apache /var/www/vanilla   Configurar la base de datos (MariaDB) Iniciamos sesión en MariaDB como usuario root. sudo mariadb -u root -p Si cuando aseguraste la instalación colocaste una password, te la pedirá. Si no es tu caso pulsa "Enter". Una vez que hayamos iniciado sesión, creamos una nueva base de datos y un usuario con los siguientes comandos en la shell de MariaDB (con tus datos): CREATE DATABASE vanilla_db; CREATE USER vanilla_user@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'mi-password'; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON vanilla_db.* TO vanilla_user@localhost; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; Salimos. exit   Configurar Apache Creamos un virtual host para Apache. sudo nano /etc/httpd/conf.d/vanilla.conf Con tus datos, copia y pega lo siguiente. DocumentRoot /var/www/vanilla/ ServerName midominio.com Options FollowSymlinks AllowOverride All Require all granted ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/vanilla_error.log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/vanilla_access.log combined Guarda el archivo y cierra el editor. Recargamos Apache. sudo systemctl reload httpd   Instalar Vanilla Forums Para concluir la instalación accede a tu dominio desde un navegador web. http://mi-dominio-com Debes ingresar la información de la base de datos que creamos anteriormente (nombre de usuario, nombre de la base de datos y la contraseña). Te recomiendo que marques la opción "Usar Vanilla's .htaccess".

Blog Post 3: “What Digital Humanists Do” by Paige Morgan.

For digital humanists, one of the most integral parts of building a project is finding the most effective and appropriate way to present information. This article is based on Miriam Posner’s ‘How Did They Make That?’ and focuses on what kinds of projects structures are needed for different types of information presentation, the characteristics of each project, what is involved in building each project and appropriate software for each project. The projects presented in the article include knowledge sites, digital editions of texts, databases, semi-linear narratives, large-scale text analyses, digital 3-D models, online events and crowdsourcing projects.

Initially, a knowledge site is a primary source gallery which can be used for accumulating or archiving and organising information about a particular topic from primary sources like original documents. Suitable software for this project are Word Press or Omeka.The article presents a few reasons why this project can be used including more public accessibility. For knowledge sites, information constantly needs to be managed and updated and it is, therefore, a long-term project that will require as many people as possible.

Secondly, a digital edition of a text or texts can be made using any HTML/ CCS site that can be self-built. This type of project format is an edited digital archive in which information is digitalized and edited to fit a certain format. Digitally editioning texts can be done easily if a schedule is followed or if assistance is given.

Thirdly, collecting data and navigating information is made simple with creating a database. Databases are helpful in compiling and organising data and subsequently pull out specific and related information from that data through queries. Software such as Microsoft Access can be used to create databases. Making a database could be a daunting project and could become a long-term project depending on the function of the database. 

Additionally, semi-linear, media-rich narratives are works that allow readers to read information any order. This is done since some projects may entail information that applies to different subject areas. The Scalar platform can be used to do this and the article states that this project can be done individually. 

Next, large-scale text analysis and topic modelling are another project format presented. This type of project can be done using TextEdit and Notepad++ and is used when working with large volumes of text. Analysis software and tools can be used to recognise patterns and relationships in the text that were not previously detected. This project can also be done individually.

Further, a geographic mapping site is a presentation of data on a map specific to geographic location. The article presents this interesting project format as an alternative to regular text. Software like Neatline, Google Maps and ArcGIS can be utilised for these kinds of projects. Mapping projects can be carried out singly or in conjunction with others.

In addition, creating digital 3D models entail re-creating a historical structure or area. This project format can be used to provide views with an opportunity to experience they structure or area that may be unavailable or dangerous for visiting. SketchUp and CityEngine are two software that make bringing a digital 3D model to life possible. Whether or not a team is needed for this project depends on its size and complexity.

Subsequently, an online event is defined in the article as an online social gathering that invites people to interact and collaborate on a project. Discussion boards such as VanillaForums can be used as well as other class setting software that will facilitate the sessions. It is important to note that this format of project building can be done on both a large-scale and a small-scale.

Lastly, a crowdsourcing is presented as a project format that can be used for obtaining, analysing and organising information from a large number of people.Omeka can be used for this type of project and naturally, such projects are very large since they require the participation of persons to be successful.

What Digital Humanists Do

 Digital humanists read and respond to literary, historical and cultural artifacts by the use of technology. The information can be presented as a poem, prose, or blog.

Digital humanists work on project such as knowledge site , digital edition , database , geographic mapping site , digital 3D model , online event and crowdsourcing project. They do this to make work on public domain more accessible, to work with a particular type of data that have no specialized catalog.

Some of this project involved the knowledge of MySQL  ,PHP, Neatline, Omeka , GeoCommons, ArcGIS, 3D-modeling programs, VanillaForums, ProBoards, HTM, ArcGIS and placing the information on Scalar.

I think that Digital 3D modeling and geographic site requires a lot of work but are really exciting because you get to work with detailed model of a particular space or area based on historical data which allows users to explore and “walk” into the space or area also you explore a text by grounding them in their geographical landscape and explore the relationship between text and “real” space. This project are really big. Examples of this projects are The Negro Travelers, PoetryBox, Mapping the Lakes ,Map of Early Modern London, Digital Magnesia,HyperCities and Digital Karnak.

In the near future I would love to work on project containing Digital 3D modeling and geographic.
