Sonic the Hedgehog Analyzer, Issue #65: Misadventures (Part 4)

We're back with another Issue, this time focusing on two different, but interconnected stories. I'm happy to announce that this one features Knuckles and the Chaotix going against the Babylon Rogues, as well as Cream, Cheese, Chocola and Gemerl dealing with Rough and Tumble. It is nothing too plot-heavy, but still a fun read.

We get straight into the action, with Knuckles being pissed off to see the Babylon Rogues stealing stuff from Marble Garden. Storm is ready to scrap, though.

However, since this is Knuckles we're talking about, he can keep up, at least until Storm slams him into the wall. Better luck next time, buddy!

Knuckles is absolutely pissed about the thieves, narrating how he tried to hunt them down, only for them to escape since his gliding is much slower than their Extreme Gear, meaning that he needed to get help.

He is currently at the Chaotix Detective Agency, explaining his situation and asking the detectives to help him track down the Babylon Rogues. Vector points out that, since the Babylon Rogues are professional thieves, they would obviously target Angel Island and all its echidna relics, but Knuckles points out how there are more valuable treasures on the island (like the Master Emerald, I assume). Espio figures they went for the ones that are less guarded or that they have a buyer with specific interests... which might actually be correct in this situation, but that's for later.

Charmy decides to call Amy to help them return the relic, but Knuckles slams the phone down, nearly breaking it as he screams that they can't tell Amy. Ah, the older brother is embarrassed to tell his younger sister he lost the relics and wants to get them back on his own. Yeah, I get it, although Espio calls it ''maintaining a warrior's pride''.

Vector accepts the case, but they'll have to make it quick, since they still have to attend a dinner at Vanilla's.

Their way of finding the Babylon Rogues is... to attack one of Eggman's Egg Bases? What?

Naturally, Eggman is pissed off about people ruining his base, especially considering he hadn't done anything this time... Oh, and he's also alive after Shadow used Chaos Control when Eggperial City blew up during his last appearance. Yeah, that's not surprising. After all, this is Eggman we're talking about.

In any case, it turns out that the reason they went after Eggman was because they assumed that he was the one who hired the Babylon Rogues. Not gonna lie, I would've assumed the same, but that doesn't make Eggman's reaction less hilarious. It's like someone trashing your backyard because they believed you hired someone to steal their package from their porch.

Eggman, naturally, is pissed off at Vector for assuming that, while Vector tries to explain himself and fails.

Eggman can only sigh in frustration about the whole misunderstanding, explaining how his robots keep track of whatever he takes, and when Knuckles explains to him that it's the same relic he stole earlier, Eggman points out that he basically has no reason to hire the Babylon Rogues, getting even more frustrated when Knuckles responds how the only value that relic has is historical and sentimental rather than having mystical powers.

Eggman basically tells them to get out, with Knuckles and the Chaotix leaving in shame. I kinda feel bad for Eggman here, since he really wasn't doing anything evil to deserve it, but at the same time, I'm laughing my ass off because this was pretty hilarious.

Back at Seaside City, our boys are brainstorming their next move. Vector's next suspect is Clutch, explaining to Knuckles who that guy is and that he might be selling off artifacts. Unfortunately, they lost track of him and they don't know where to even start looking for him. This angers Knuckles, who just wishes things were as simple as finding the guilty party and beat them up.

Same here, Knuckles. Same here.

Charmy and Espio then pop out of nowhere, telling the two how they got a lead and scaring the hell out of Vector. Turns out, Charmy overheard some gossip between a couple of sketchy-looking people, with Espio noting how it was very convenient. However, they don't dwell on it for too long, because Knuckles already left to pursue the only lead they have.

We spot the Babylon Rogues hanging out on a pier, waiting for their client, with Jet and Wave being impatient, while Storm is just having fun using the relics as puppets. Wave jokes how Jet is showing some cultural sensitivity, but Jet just points out how he doesn't want them to get busted before he can sell them. With what money, I don't know, since SEGA doesn't want to show any money in this world.

We end this story on a cliffhanger, just as Knuckles and the Chaotix are about to beat up the Babylon Rogues.

Honestly, there isn't really much to say here, aside from the fact that I love seeing Knuckles hanging out with the Chaotix and have the Babylon Rogues involved, so we'll move on to the next story.

This one is about Cream, Cheese, Vanilla, Chocola and Gemerl preparing the dinner party for the Chaotix. They're having fun, only for Vanilla to go blue screen when she realizes they ran out of butter.

Going by Cheese's expression, it seems that Chocola ate the butter, so Gemerl offers to get more, but Vanilla tells him that she'll get it, trusting Cream and the rest of the household to take care of the dinner.

Unfortunately for them, they are being observed by two familiar figures.

Rough and Tumble are back and their latest scheme involves to break into Cream's home and rob it.

Oh, boy...

Cream is determined to keep an eye on the dinner, wanting to make her mother proud by showing how responsible she is, and Gemerl even praises her for her hard work during her previous adventures, which is really sweet of him.

Cream is happy, asking him to set the table in the dining room, only for Gemerl to spot the intruders.

Rough and Tumble are about to mess things up, only to spot Gemerl in the corner, believing him to be some kind of butler robot and thinking they can defeat him.

Yeah, that would be a bad idea for the skunk brothers, given what Gemerl is capable of.

Cream, Cheese and Chocola overhear the scuffle, with Cream being worried about Gemerl, but she can't let the dinner alone since it might burn. She asks Chocola to check on Gemerl instead, the Chao accepting their task.

To Chocola's shock, they find Gemerl fighting Rough and Tumble, the former beating their asses. Chocola rushes back to Cream, with Rough and Tumble going after them, figuring they could take whoever is in the house as a hostage.

We then get another cliffhanger, with Rough and Tumble barging into the kitchen, causing Cream to accidentally knock over some of the food on the stove and resulting in a huge fire.

Sheesh, so much for the dinner party. I hope the Rabbit household has a fire extinguisher to deal with this. I also feel bad for Cream, but I will comment more in the next Issue when we see the resolution of this mess.

As said, this wasn't as plot-heavy as the previous Issue, but nevertheless, it was quite entertaining.

IAN FLYNN: Sonic would tolerate it briefly. "Haha, alright, you're a big fan, that's cool, time to let go." KYLE: Mhm. IAN: Uh, Tails would be incredibly bashful about it, but wouldn't be able to like, fight against it because he wouldn't want to hurt anybody's feelings or be insulting. Amy would be kind of- likewise, flustered, and if it lingers a little too long, she'll go from flustered, to a little impatient, to possibly violent. KYLE: [laughs] IAN: Knuckles... it depends. If it's like, a small child or one of them lady types, he might actually kind of endure and be kind of flustered, and not know what to do. 'Cause he doesn't know how to handle the ladies, and he's not gonna punch a kid. KYLE: What?! Why not?! IAN: He's a good guy! KYLE: [laughing] Oh, okay, fine. IAN: Now, anyone who doesn't fall into those two categories? No, you're getting punched right then and there. KYLE: [chuckling] He'll punch a bat lady, though! IAN: Eh, if she steals his stuff, but the minute she does anything remotely flirtatious, he just doesn't know what to do. KYLE: I mean, same, but still! [laughs] IAN: [chuckles] Uh, Charmy would be all like, "yay hugs!" KYLE: Yeah. IAN: Espio would be extremely uncomfortable, but- KYLE: And go invisible. IAN: -just kind of endure it, he- yeah! [laughs] Just turn invisible and hope they think he's gone. "I can still feel you, you know." [annoyed groans as Espio] KYLE: [laughs] IAN: Uh, Vector's a good bit taller than everybody else, but- KYLE: Yeah, he's like, human height! Or maybe even a little taller. IAN: Pretty close. So, I don't know... Vector strikes me as the type of guy as- if he sees that dude at a convention, trying to be all creep-o with the sign, "free hugs," he'll take that hug. KYLE: Yeah, he'll do it! IAN: He'll teach that guy a lesson. [Vector voice] "Hey, I love free stuff! Come here!" KYLE: [cackling laughter] IAN: Uh, Silver's in the same boat as Tails and Espio. He's just gonna be a flustered puddle of, "I don't know what to do." He's probably starved for touch, considering his timeline. KYLE: [chuckles] Poor Silver. IAN: [Silver voice] "Physical contact that doesn't involve applying a tourniquet! Wow!" KYLE: [chuckling] Aw! IAN: Blaze will not have it. KYLE: Blaze is not interested, no! IAN: No, no, no, no. She will not be violent, but she will not humor it. No, Sir. KYLE: No, no... you're gonna get burned a little. Just enough, just enough to put that fear in 'ya. [laughs] Oh, man. And Big! Big's like, [Big the Cat voice] "Okay!" IAN: [Big the Cat voice] "Yay, hugs!" KYLE: [Big the Cat voice] "Yay!" IAN: You're not really hugging Big, so much as pressing yourself to him. KYLE: Yes, yes. IAN: If you have the wingspan to hug Big, I don't know what you are, but you ain't human. KYLE: [laughing] It's very comfy. It's like- it's like, uh, hugging a Snorlax. IAN: A beanbag chair that smells of fish. KYLE: Hugging a Snorlax... [laughing] Aw, man. Alright, I think that's enough.

Sonic drug himself back to his feet and sighed as Surge yelled at him, and he couldn't help but feel like this was there relationship. What was with him and angry hedgehogs? sure she was a Tenrec but they were closely related! If it wasn't amy yelling at him, or shadow trying to grind his face into a wall. It was Surge yelling at him! It was like he had some gene to piss off all his friends or something!

" And what if someone took that shuttle loaded it with civi's and was trying to get the hell out of dodge? look i get you worked for the guy and you ain't wrong it coulda been him! but there is always the chance it wasn't--- we don't blow things up based on a hunch ... especially since i know the Chaotix have been looking into Clutch... "

Almost as if on que another shuttle was launching from the hanger and heading out to clear the airspace. Almost as if proving Sonic right as Storm and Vector appeared to be on top of the shuttle yelling at each other though way to far away to hear it clearly. Sonic gripped his nose and let out a long winded sigh.

" Let's get inside and see what is going down, maybe i can find Tails, or one of the Chaotix--- not Jet though, i don't need him squawking at me today..."

He was thankful with Surge stopped the giant Wisp though maybe he wished she would do it less violently. You could see his annoyance building as this day was getting more complicated by the second. First Mimic, then Clutch and now Eggman! What next infinite? Like that would be his damn luck today! Though Metal was more likely and as fun as it was to bash his head in he didn't really have time for that!

" She's right though Big Mom, he's trying to bait us... you just nudge the ship away from HQ let Surge and i Go say Hi...alright let's go bust his head in and find out what he's up to! "

The Gator stood on top of the shuttle poking his finger into Storms chest with an annoyed look on his face! He wasn't about to let them get all the credit when it was Espio who found the shuttle! it was Vector and Jewel who found the people! and charmy to! so he wasn't gonna let them get away with it no way no how!

" NOW you listen here bozo! we spent WEEKS in that hole! plannin' the perfect escape! waitin' for the right beat to do our thing! we ain't lettin' you criminals steal all the cash! "

" YEA! we are gonna steal that cash! wait--- isn't stealing bad? "

" YEA! well whose gonna stop us? you! HAH loved to see you try! "

Storm cracked his knuckles ready to go to town on both Vector and Charmy! Though the buzzing of Jewel's wings caught his attention as she put herself between both of them. Hoping to stop a brawl before it started! they saved the civilians that was the important part and she just wanted to get everyone to safety!

" Listen both of you--- important thing is, the people are safe, we are out of danger... fighting among ourselves right now isn't helping anyone! we'll discuss compensation once this is all over! please Vector... let's just get this on the ground... i'm just glad wave can drive this thing..."

Vector and Storm huffed and turned there backs to Jewel not wanting to fight with the Director between them. Though neither happy with the situation! Jewel was just glad this conflict was over and they could focus on getting back on the ground! though her eyes went to the massive Wisp---she had no idea if that was good or bad but seeing Sonic in the distance gave her hope!

Eggman Just smiled at the mysterious stranger, and had so many questions! but he'd get to the bottom of that soon enough. But first it was time to give that hedgehog something to remember him by! He lifted up the device on his wrist and flicked a button. Accessing the ships systems, and shifting through the network. He found the ships defense systems and with a flick of his finger he turned all the weapons back online! A parting gift to Sonic and his new wisp friend! he doubted it would be enough to kill the wisp mother, but more then enough to make her fight back! and if he knew GUN---they'd respond with force!

" ... Till we Meet again... next time i'll be sure to be more properly prepared for you--- but as for this day, i've had my fill. Enjoy your gift Sonic! may you coke on it! "

Eggman closed his sub-space portal leaving the room empty, save for the remains of the Egg Carrier. It was almost in this instant that Jet came down the shaft and shifted his gear into the room, finding it empty? he'd been looking for Clutch and had tracked him here but? Nothing but an odd egg carrier? was he to late? had he missed him? His rage welled up inside of him as he wanted to get his licks in before sonic!

" that old man is slippery as an Eel... looks like i missed him--- Tch, all this for nothing... what a waste of my time! "

Surge would shove Sonic away from her. "Oh, yeah, I'm sure that private shuttle flying AWAY from Restoration is just full of people and not Clutch at all." The tenrec would stop herself, taking a deep breath. "I used to work for the guy so I know the airship and it's shuttles better than anyone else. I'm not stupid enough to start blasting at any shuttle leaving." The speedster wanted to take another shot, though even if she boosts her lightning it's too far by this point.

Surge's attention went to Sonic pointing out Eggman. "If he wants to fucking play then let him try. I hope he brought that stupid metal version of you so I can crush him too." The tenrec wasn't scared of Eggman or Metal Sonic. If anything she had a huge advantage seeing as they don't know about her new abilities and was sure if she just boosted her lightning while in contact with Metal Sonic he wouldn't be able to counter the sudden increase in voltage.

The Mother Wisp was trying to figure out how to safely move the airship without bring it down, at least until she saw Eggman. The Wisp's Hyper-Go-On energy building up around it before it began to reach and grab him. That was until it saw a bolt hit it's energy making her stop and look down at Surge.

"Don't be fucking stupid! Eggman is just trying to piss you off so you start smashing shit up trying to get to him! Just ignore his bitch ass and leave it to me and Sonic! After all, you trust Sonic, right?!" Surge doubt her word would get anywhere with the Wisp, though Sonic was here so hoped that'd be enough.

The Mother Wisp while not happy with the idea of not attempting to grab Eggman saw Surge's point. Without a word it'd shift to gently grabbing the airship, starting to move it away from the base as carefully as she could.

"Why should I care? I haven't done anything wrong, and video recording will prove we just happened to both be after Clutch and that I don't work for you. That said, if you get in my way you may not like it the next time we meet." He didn't care for Eggman one way or the other, though if he got in is way he'd make himself a problem for the other.

"Though I could be lying. After all, I lied about where the Chaos Emerald I have is," he said, letting one slide out of his right sleeve into his hand. "You'd be surprised how easy it is to mask the energy it gives off by using the Emerald itself." He then teleports away.

Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald and Angel Island, and up until now, thought he was the last echidna left in the world...  That changed when Shade and the rest of the Marauders returned to the planet from the Twilight Cage.

Knuckles first came into the picture when Eggman crashed the Death Egg on Angel Island.  He duped Knuckles into thinking Sonic and Tails were the enemies, and did everything he could to stop them from putting an end to Eggman’s plot.... Until Knuckles saw Eggman stealing the Master Emerald, so he worked with Sonic to stop him.   

Knuckles and Sonic had a rocky friendship at the start, but their bond has since grown stronger.  Even though they may still butt heads at times, they will always have each others’ backs, especially when returning 200 years later to an Earth completely taken over by the Eggman Empire.

Crusher’s Sonic Intelligence Tier List 2.0

Last year, I made my own estimations on where the Sonic cast would rank from an intelligence standpoint. For the sake of keeping up to date now that Mania and Forces have been released, I wanted to go back to it for the sake of adding a few characters who weren't featured the first time around. I also wanted to change a few placements on the list in light of the characters’ portrayals in Forces, as well as just having some second thoughts about them in general. Note that this is still a game-centric list, so no characters from SatAM/Archie/etc.

Do you agree with this list? Disagree? Feel free to elaborate on your thoughts either way. :)

GENIUS TIER

Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Dr. Eggman - Most people would argue that Gerald Robotnik should be higher than him, since the doctor himself held his grandfather in high regard in Adventure 2. Thing is, Gerald's long dead, and Ivo himself has made a great number of breakthroughs and achievements SINCE Adventure 2. Regardless of where you stand on the subject, Robotnik is indisputably the greatest living genius in the Sonic universe.

Professor Gerald Robotnik - That said, Gerald was a very gifted man to have created a lifeform like Shadow, as well as other accomplishments like the Artificial Chaos and the Space Colony A.R.K. Especially when you remember that he lived during a time in which the world as a whole was far less advanced.

Miles “Tails” Prower - How many kids do you know who can create different types of highly advanced contraptions and vehicles like it’s nothing? Let alone fake Chaos Emeralds?

VERY HIGH TIER

Wave the Swallow - Her engineering prowess speaks for itself.

Rouge the Bat - Comes with the job. An expert in infiltration and hacking, a master of deception, and an expert treasure hunter. Given how she explained Soleanna’s monarchy system to Shadow at the drop of a hat, that would also indicate she’s well read and has a good memory.

Blaze the Cat - More to do with implication, but she did once ask Tails if he could build a device that scans and analyses plasma and electromagnetic signals, in a tone that implied she knew what she was talking about.

HIGH TIER

Sonic the Hedgehog - Being able to avoid obstacles and fellow citizens with no issue at such insane speeds would imply that Sonic has a sharp mind and thought process. He’s also been shown on numerous occasions to adapt very quickly to unfamiliar situations, and his advice is usually profound in it’s simplicity. He can be pretty sly with his battle strategies as well when he puts his mind to it.

Shadow the Hedgehog - He doesn’t always have it right, but most of the time he’ll figure out what’s going on pretty quickly. Ever since the Black Arms incident, he’s also been wise to villainous trickery.

Erazor Djinn - Played his cards right from start to finish. Didn’t really make any stupid decisions, and made dastardly efficient use of what he had to work with, particularly his complicated relationship with Shahra.

Metal Sonic - Another one born out of implication, but given how he was created to be a match for Sonic in every way, I would assume Metal is just as clever as the real deal. He was pretty sharp in the OVA at least, and he had quite a few strategies to throw at the player in his Mania boss fight, including summoning a bunch of Silver Sonics to distract you with.

Merlina - She managed to keep Sonic distracted from her plan, all the while doing a competent job at portraying herself as a helpless bystander.

Heavy King - He was wily enough to try and steal the Master Emerald specifically when Knuckles wasn't guarding it. And it’s possible that he got Heavy Rider to keep Sonic and Tails busy so that they wouldn't intervene either. Too bad for him that Knuckles walked in at the last moment...

Zavok - He had a simple plan, but it was an effective one. He was also good at rolling with the punches whenever things didn’t go his way, and while Master Zik was the one who actually came up with the idea of turning Sonic into a robot, Zik himself estimated that Zavok would have probably came up with the idea on his own accord sooner or later anyway.

Vector the Crocodile - Despite his occasionally bumbling attitude, he’s still the brains of the Chaotix at the end of the day, and his deduction skills have proven to be accurate most of the time. Note that he suspected early on that the person guiding them in Heroes was Robotnik, and he also suspected early on that someone was pulling the Time Eater’s strings. Both of these predictions turned out to be correct.

AVERAGE TIER

Amy Rose - Can be ditzy at times, but she tends to have a good amount of common sense, and despite the lack of focus on it, her skill with tarot cards would add further evidence to her being far from stupid. She's also skilled in sussing out people's emotions and feelings even when they’re strangers to her, and as of Forces, she's now had experience as a resistance leader. With the latter, she's implied to have been reasonably competent in that occupation.

Knuckles the Echidna - He may be incredibly gullible, but he also knows a lot about ancient history, and like Rouge, he’s a very skilled treasure hunter. He was also the main leader of the resistance in Forces, although it seems Amy did most of the actual field work in that regard.

Espio the Chameleon - Maybe he should be higher, but we haven’t really seen much to know for sure with him...

Black Doom - Doesn't do anything especially idiotic (or at least not when it doesn’t involve the in-game AI, that’s another story...), but he can be oddly naive for someone so powerful and ancient. His dialogue in Sky Troops heavily and hilariously suggests that he doesn't know what lightning is.

E-123 Omega - For a robot who likes to use brute force to solve his problems, he has shown to be aware of the thoughts and feelings of those around him, especially when it comes to Shadow.

Marine the Raccoon - She was able to create a decent ship in spite of her boisterous personality.

Cream the Rabbit - Naturally her youthful innocence makes her a little naive, but she’s still prone to surprising moments of insightfulness, such as when she's explaining the concept of sadness to Emerl.

Big the Cat - Some fans (and Bioware) might think he should be lower, but one of the themes with Big is that he’s simple, NOT dumb. Given how we’ve seen him do things like piloting the Tornado - a plane he was unfamiliar with - without any obvious trouble, he's more on-the-ball than most fans give him credit for.

Silver the Hedgehog - Despite his incredible powers and competence with using said powers, he’s proven to be a bit foolish, and doesn’t often plan things out that well. That said, he seems to have gotten his act together somewhat by the time of Forces.

Infinite - Not a moron, but often too careless for his own good and usually bites off more than he can chew because of it. His use of the Phantom Ruby also tends to be very basic and thuggish, compared to the more elaborate and cunning ways Robotnik makes use of it.

Captain Whisker - Goofy, easily distracted and tricked, yet surprisingly effective at making getaways.

LOW TIER

Jet the Hawk - He probably isn’t that stupid overall, but aside from his legitimate hoverboard skills, his arrogance makes him out to be a bit of a fool more often than not. Usually more bark than bite. (Also, he doesn’t seem to realise that being the fastest on an Extreme Gear doesn’t mean you’re actually faster than the guy known for being the fastest thing alive on foot.)

Sticks the Badger - Some of her conspiracy theories can be correct, but she tends to be very... behind on things otherwise.

Charmy Bee - He has to be somewhat competent to still be working with the Chaotix, but he’s generally an airhead.

VERY LOW TIER

Storm the Albatross - Clueless individual in general. Mostly a yes-man through and through.

G.U.N. Commander - “I'm going to get revenge on the guy metaphorically responsible for killing Maria by joining the organization that actually killed her.”

INCOMPETENT SWINE TIER
