A bronze portrait bust of George V by Sydney March, 1911.
The King Emperor is portrayed in his coronation year of 1911 and is shown wearing the robes and insignia of the Order of the Garter, the insignia of the Royal Victorian Order and of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Signed and dated 1911.Sydney March (1876–1968) was the second of nine children, eight of whom became artists. The March family established their own sculpture studio at Goddendene, Kent, in 1901. Sydney also worked with the art founders Elkington, and was responsible for royal portraits, including Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and George V, and for producing figures, busts and statues of leading figures of the day.  In the early 1920‘s the March studio was honoured with a visit by members of the Royal Family. Sydney’s public works include statues of Colonel Bevington (Tooley Street, London Bridge, 1911) and Lord Kitchener (Calcutta, 1914; Khartoum, 1921, removed to Royal School of Military Engineering, Chatham, 1958). Among his portrait busts were Cecil Rhodes, Sir John French. March also executed a number of war memorials including Bromley Parish Church (1921) and the United Empire Loyalists Memorial (Hamilton, Ontario, 1929). Following the death of Vernon March in 1930, Sydney and his siblings completed the Canadian National War Memorial at Ottawa.

See this is why I can't take 'climate change causes wildfires' analysis seriously:
I don't know about the ones in northern or eastern Louisiana but the big wildfires here in the western part have all, minus the Cameron Marsh fires, been shown to be the work of an arsonist piece of shit. Not necessarily one person setting each of these fires, given they arrested one person for one of the Vernon Parish fires who thought that a burn ban didn't apply to him because Jesus shaves and would keep his little ass out of the jail cell where it belongs.
Climate change is why Louisiana is so much hotter and drier than usual in the summer. Climate change is not, however, the direct cause of these fires. Lightning did not do it, the wild causes of wildfires did not do it. Arsonists and pieces of shit who thought 'burn ban? Not in my barbecue' did.
Unless you want to argue climate change is the scientific version of a Hollywood demon convincing people to act with malicious intent

"Probe Is Imperative, Say Two Meetings On Social Service," Toronto Globe. September 22, 1933. Page 1 & 2. --- Council of Church of England in Canada and Committee of Canadian Social Service Adopt Resolutions Seeking Inquiry and Reform ---- OTTAWA ADVISED OF ACTION TAKEN --- Two more important bodies yesterday expressed the view that an investigation Into penal institutions and reformatories was imperative. One resolution urging the investigation came from the Council for Social Service of the Church of England in Canada, presided over by the Most Rev. C. L. Worrell, Primate of All Canada and Archbishop of Nova Scotia, and attended the majority of the Bishops of the Church, representatives of the laity and clergy from every diocese of the Dominion.
The other resolution was passed at a meeting of the Criminology Committee of the Social Service Council of Canada, held in the Y.W.C.A. McGill Street, Hon. W. F. Nickle, K.C., and W. M. Nickle, K.C., his son, attended the meeting.
Thorough Probe. Resolving that "there ought a thorough investigation and study by an independent and representative Commission of all our penal and reformatory Institutions," the Council for Social Service of the Church of England in Canada went on record at the annual meeting yesterday morning on the question of penitentiary conditions. At the meeting of the Council, which was held in the Parish Hall of St. Paul's Church, the Primate presided.
The Council declared that it was strongly of the opinion that such an Investigation be made and that its scope should include Do-minion, Provincial and local institutions and the entire system of dealing with delinquents and criminals.
Findings of 1914. In secondary paragraph it was urged that consideration should be given to the findings of the Royal Commission of 1914, and the committee on the revision of penitentiary regulations of 1921, and suggested careful study of the English Adult Probation system and the Borstal system. A concluding rider authorized the sending of the recommendations to Prime Minister R. B. Bennett, to the Premiers Premiers and Attorneys-General of the various Provinces, to the Minister of Justice, and to other social organizations
The final draft of the resolution was prepared by a special committee appointed after protracted discussion in open Council. The committee, which was composed of the Bishop of Fredericton, Archdeacon Scott, Chancellor Harris, Chancellor Gisborne, Canon Vernon, Rev. W. H. Adcock, G. B. Woods, and Magistrate J. E. Jones Woods, took up the correspondence on the question which had been received from other social service agencies, and placed their opinion in a formal resolution. This was introduced to the Council by the Bishop of Fredericton, and seconded by Chancellor Gisborne.
Statement Issued. The following statement was issued after the meeting of the Social Service Council's committee meeting:
"At the call of the Criminology Committee of the Social Service Council of Canada a conference on penitentiary reform met in the Y.W. C.A., 21 McGill Street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock.
"Canon Pilcher occupied the chair, and in addition to the committee a large number of representatives or religious denominations, service clubs welfare agencies and others interested were present. By Invitation Hon. W. F. Nickle, K.C., and W. M. Nickle, K.C., both of Kingston, were present to give the committee what information they could regarding penitentiary conditions. It was made very definite that this meeting had no political partisan significance whatsoever, that conditions in Kingston had prevailed under both Conservative and Liberal Governments.
"Among the reforms needed, the following were enumerated: The segregation of prisoners, so that youths would not be put to work with hardened criminals. Cases were cited of boys, 15 and 16, in the penitentiary, who who by by contact contact with older prisoners became morally degenerate within a short time. Another evil evil referred of to was that of isolation prisoners, it being mentioned that one prisoner, O'Brien, had remained in solitary confinement since 1931. On their discharge prisoners were sent out with $10 and a suit of clothes, which mode of dress in itself branded them as former inmates of the penitentiary, there- by making them an easy mark for those who are criminally inclined.
Silence Rule Condemned. "The report of the Royal Commission of 1914 and the report of the committee to Investigate conditions in Kingston Penitentiary of 1921 were discussed, and the system of condemned which advocated absolute silence, that no prisoner was allowed to speak except when spoken to by one of the guards. It was emphasized to the prisoner on entering that he was there for punishment, that he had no privileges, that he should question nothing, and the system proceeded on the basis that every every man had full mentality, while many prisoners were mentally no older than children of ten years. The result of this system was that many prisoners returned to society with a worse outlook on the world than they had before they entered.
"Among other evils in the administration of justice was inequality of sentence; that it should not be possible for a man to be sentenced by a Magistrate to a long term; that there should be a public defender appointed and a board to take into consideration all circumstances in the life of the prisoner before pronouncing sentence. A system system should be devised whereby prisoners, by work, should be able to earn something to support port their wives and families while they are in prison. It was an injustice that the wives and children should suffer when they are wholly innocent.
Coast-to-Coast Probe. "It was pointed out that as yet there is no machinery to recoup an accused man for loss that he sustained in his defense, and the meeting strongly advocated an inquiry into the administration of justice and conditions in our penal Institutions, not only in in connection with Kingston, but also with the whole of the Dominion.
"A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to W. P. Nickle and W. M. Nickle for the information they extended, and to the Y.W.C.A. for placing the auditorium at the disposal of the meeting.
"The Committee on Criminology of the Social Service Council of Canada will met again next Tuesday to decide upon further action."
Committee to Report. Kingston, Sept. 21. A committee to Inquire into the administration of penal institutions was appointed at the Kingston meeting of the Kingston Presbyterian Presbytery of the United Church of Canada held in Harrowsmith.
The committee is to report back he committee. Members are Rev. H. В. Presbytery in the near future. Clarke, Rev. J. O. Watts, Rev. J. M. Shaw, Rev. F. W. Mahaffy (all of Kingston), and C. A. Winters of Brockville.

Alfriscombe past
Tumblr media
“THE TOWN OF Alfriscombe has long been of historical interest. First recorded in the Domesday Book as a manorial hall in the possession of one William Vernon and featuring heavily in many of the fairy tales and folklore of this region, this location has seen many events over the years.”.
True of any place that’s a place, Mainder grouches silently, easing into the back of the room. Why mudsiders place so much faith in sticks and stones was always beyond him; like somewhere isn’t a real place until they’ve been there and smothered the living earth in stone and steel.
The current speaker is an almost pitch-perfect stereotype of the absent-minded professor, even down to his choice of clothes - unfashionable jeans paired with a fussily patterned shirt and a sage-green tweed jacket. He hardly seems like a formidable adversary. Mainder can only hope there’s more to him that meets the eye - or indeed the ear. Half his audience are arms folded, frowning down at the ground, a pose that says they’re listening only because they can’t think of a compelling reason to get up and walk out. The other half appear to be surreptitiously composing emails on their laptops.
“After a promising start, William took possession of the parish in 1103 as a reward for his family’s assistance in the Norman invasion. He promptly built a simple hall, the remains of which you will of course have noticed in the hotel’s reception area. His grandson Robert was one of the architects of the Treaty of Wallingford, and as a result of his endeavours was able to considerably enlarge the original structure and add two new wings with building work spanning twenty years from 1157 onwards. Sadly by the late 1500s records suggest the Vernons had fallen from royal favour, and the manor saw no further expansion from that point.”.
Of all the people in this room Mainder is the least in need of a potted history of Alfriscombe, and if he ever felt the need then this rambling word-salad wouldn’t be it. Nonetheless he keeps his thoughts firmly to himself and schools his face into an expression of polite attention.
“Of course it’s not the Vernon family who have brought us to Alfriscombe - although their descendants are certainly interested in what we may find!”. The speaker chuckles weakly, and when there’s no answering ripple from his listeners he pretends not to notice and continues, “This period in Alfriscombe’s history also coincides, as far as we are able to establish, with the charming story of the Moon Princess. Of course it’s no more than a children’s tale, but there may well be some historical basis in fact. Rather more mundane than the story would have us believe, but it was hardly uncommon for a young woman to be carried across borders, quite possibly against her will, to be married into a neighbouring tribe!”.
He twinkles happily, as if abduction and forced marriage were some quaint regional custom on the same level as cheese-rolling or Morris dancing.
“What little evidence we have of such a person as our mythical princess existing is limited to the Moon Brooch, part of the Vernon Collection. Of course as you know my own specialism is not in metalworking or jewellery, so you may be asking yourself why on earth am I so interested in a few trinkets?”.
He breaks off to take a sip of water, and possibly to allow his listeners a moment to ponder a hypothetical scenario where they might be persuaded to care what he’s thinking. Mainder’s view from the back of the room suggests the majority remain focused on correcting typos in their email drafts.
“The Moon Brooch, while sadly damaged, still bears the trace of a stamp on the underside, a maker’s mark in the very distinctive form of a triskelion. By itself this is interesting, but with the recent discovery by my colleagues of the Alfriscombe hoard bearing the exact same mark - ah, I’m sure you can see the implications! It strongly suggests the items were made somewhere nearby, rather than a single item being an import from elsewhere. Now - this is where it gets really interesting. Using some very new techniques - some of you may already know this, of course; we’re not quite ready to publish but, aha, no surprise that the odd snippet will have slipped out! - a very new technique, as I say, we believe we may have discovered a very significant connection.”.
The slide show advances to an artist’s impression of Fairy Hill from pre-history. Lively, imperfect pencil strokes describe a wooden palisade and rough huts clustered at the bottom, a grand circle of standing stones at the summit, and ragged stick-figure inhabitants who don’t appear to own a razor or a comb between them leading a reluctant ox to ritual sacrifice.
“The significance of the barrow and its stone circle of course cannot be denied. No question, no question at all, there must have been some ritual function connected to Alfriscombe during that time. However what brings us here today is something many have missed, which is the very clear connection between the objects in the hoard, the Moon Brooch, and with the town itself.”.
The slide advances again to display a 3D model of the landscape, monochrome blocks just recognisable as Alfriscombe’s bay with the town in the foreground and the hill rising up behind it.
“The Lidar scanning technique we have been utilising on a larger scale - capturing the landscape topology, you see here the clear evidence of a structure at the foot of the hill which I am certain has some connection to ritual worship - this technology can also be deployed at a much finer resolution, so for example we might scan a surface to see what is underneath a layer of paint, dust, or what-have-you. On an impulse I directed my team to test this on some samples around the hoard site, and …”. He holds the projector control high, as if he’s about to perform a magic trick, and triumphantly presses a button.
The result is underwhelming. Due to some technical hitch or other the layout has been horribly mangled, so what should have been a neat gallery has become a jumble of images stacked on top of each other. The top of the pile shows two young men standing either side of a very ordinary looking section of dry-stone wall, grinning at the camera with thumbs up and a heap of equipment at their feet .
“Ah. That’s … uh, I don’t quite know what happened there. What we should be seeing is - ah, perhaps I could have a moment to fix this …?”. He appeals to the timekeeper in the front row, who returns a firm head shake. “Of course, yes, we must keep to time. Perhaps it’s best if I simply describe the results. The scan revealed a carving on the stone here, at the centre of this frame, a very distinctive design that almost exactly matches the triskelion we saw on the objects in the hoard!”.
Evidently from his breathless delivery, that was intended to be the climax of his presentation. Without the scan image as proof though, the only reaction he gets is a handful of people glancing up briefly from their screens and immediately looking down again.
“So, ah, in conclusion: while many continue to advocate for more traditional methods used solely in isolation, I can safely say we have demonstrated how effective the newer technologies can be at assisting the early phases of a project. I am sure your home institutions will be as keen as mine to explore the efficiency angle there!”.
That at least prompts a murmur of ironic laughter from the audience, and he preens for a moment before advancing to his final slide.
“We look forward to testing our approach over the summer with a little, ah, proof of concept here in Alfriscombe. A few minor details to wrap up, ah, very promising talks with the landowner and, um, yes. We expect to have an agreement any day now. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I think we possibly have time for a few questions?”.
There it is. Mainder stretches his fingers out to loosen the tension in his hands, and pushes away from the wall. It’s almost unsporting. The universe may eventually see fit to send him a challenge, but today is not that day.
