Skiing, snowboarding and the very cold Snow Festival

30th January - 4th February

This may have been the closest we have come to missing a flight. We were on a budget airline and had already rearranged the timing as both of us had to work that day. Rob made it to the train for the airport, shouldering his massive board bag with seconds to spare and just managed to check said luggage within 2 minutes of the drop off.  Not short of enthusiasm as we were off for a long weekend of sliding in Hokkaido!

Niseko is a three hour coach ride from Sapporo, we got there late on the Wednesday night, stopped in a BnB and hit the powdery slopes first thing. We had been to the same place the previous year with Jon, Spare and Jo so knew what to expect...lots of Australians and lots of amazing deep powder. 

Our lovely self catering apartment had a great location and fantastic view of Mount Yotei when it was not hidden by snow clouds. After settling and getting back into the ski zone The Grunds arrived from their hot tropical home of Singapore. It was a bit of a temperature change for them but they adjusted well. Obviously Ilja’s 80s vintage onesie was completely the right choice for the Hokkaido winter - but his German pride kept him warm. 

We had quite heavy snow the first few days but on our last day, the snow cleared, meaning all the chair lifts were open and we were able to enjoy the stunning vistas surrounding us. 

As the sun rose from behind the mountain, it signalled a day for great riding. Rob was sporting a minor rib injury from a previous day but powdered on with assistance from some painkillers.

Rob and Ilja obviously had a great time. I had a lesson that attempted the green runs from the top of the mountain to the bottom. It was challenging but my lessons have definitely paid off. We love Niseko and will endeavour to make it back next year. 

On our return journey to Sapporo airport we dropped into the world famous Snow festival. It was very, very, very, very cold. 

This was an appropriate snow sculpture for Rob to pose in front of as it is a replica of the church in Helsinki -  Rob got stuck in Helsinki at Christmas - due to ice and snow.

The snow sculptures were great - we particularly enjoyed the one representing the 2019 Rugby World Cup with its year of the pig boars and rugby ball. It was however very, very, very, very, very cold!

As well as all the sculptures we also got to see some crazy, young, snowboarding guys and gals throwing themselves down a freestyle jump and attempting some crazy tricks. Lots of hats and masks were lost in the process.

We met one of the mascots... and then enjoyed watching his mate trying to fit through a door. 

The Snow Festival was great but very, very, very, very cold. Hokkaido, we will be back - maybe in the summer next time.
