I randomly saw from Freddy's Instagram that he and Amita were working the till at the Choose Love pop-up on Carnaby Street.
It's a fantastic cause - buying supplies for refugees. The number of refugees and displaced people globally have doubled since 20 years ago. My parents were refugees of the Vietnam War, and boat people, so one of the things we bought was a Sea Rescue package. Maybe it'll give someone the second chance that my parents got.
This trip let me see all the Season 1 Crows again! Was only expecting to see Kit (Influence at the Collective Theatre was great, go see it!), got bonus Freddy and Amita ❤️ and a good cause .

December 1965
Picking at the sutures stitched across one palm, Elias watched from his bunk as a few squads shared some laughs over a game of Texas Hold ‘Em. Of course, he’d been invited to play but found it to be all more relaxing to watch as he smoked a cigarette.
“You too big for your britches now, sarge?” A large man named Willis had teased while the others cackled. Even sheepish Doyle joined in.
“At ease, private.” he chuckled, running one hand through a growing tuft of tawny hair. It’d been a while since he’d gotten it trimmed, an early Christmas present. “Let me enjoy some time off before we head to Danang.”
“Sure you don’t want any holiday cheer?” Doyle shook a half empty bottle of Jack as the others hooted, “You’ve been quiet as a dormouse since we’ve been back. Thought that was my job.”
That had been true though Elias wasn’t a man of many words to begin with. Truth of the matter was exhaustion had settled in his bones. Muscles ached as a barrage of scars were earned like the medals he’d likely never last long enough to see. The concept of war was wearing on him, even more so as he prepared for another mission. Being promoted to sergeant only put a bigger target on his back.
A year had practically slid through bloody fingers and they were no closer to winning this war. They’d all be damned to hell before the army even regained their footing against Ho Chi Minh and the his soldiers with state of the art weaponry. They could end them all before even one American unjammed their ancient M16s. Tonight on base was the closest reprieve that anyone had. The chances of being bombed were slim as the men drank and fooled around with silly card games. They bet pennies and peanuts a few mothers had sent in care packages.
“Hold ‘Em isn’t exactly my bag, man.” Elias groaned, arching off his bunk in an attempt to stretch a tense back. Pulling the filter from his lips, a plume of smock emerged. “More into a heated game of parcheesi and a fat blunt.”
“Heard you’re here because of drug charges,” Willis added solemnly, knowing he shouldn’t goad a superior. Wide lips curled into a smirk, blue eyes squinting as the cigarette continued burning. Elias folded lean arms behind his head.
“You heard right, private,” he snickered playfully. “But a basehead wife will get you in hot water quicker than shit. Only into devil’s lettuce and some psychedelics myself.”
“You’ve tripped?” Doyle’s eyes were magnified beneath bottle thick glasses, big as brown bonbons as thin lips fell open. Grodin chuckled, remembering when he’d been a young and scrawny shit that was impressed by everything. “That’s wild?”
“Not really,” Linskey, another private playing poker added with a scoff, “You’ve just never done anything wild in your life.”
“I’ve always wanted to smoke weed,” Doyle half whispered, earning a round of laughter at his expense.
“Worried your mother’s gonna hear?” Willis bellowed, biting back his own giggle. “All the way out here in Củ Chi?”
“Leave him alone,” Elias groaned, throat aching for the pleasant burn of a blunt. He could even go for a mushroom at this rate. It’d make the jungles and the dust laden camp a little more colorful and interesting. He’d definitely be picked off by a sniper, but what a way to go, high as a kite. “He’s just a kid.”
“Everyone is but you, old man.” Elias didn’t catch who snorted out that revelation but found it humorous all the same. “Lot of us are gonna grow up here before they toss our bodies into a crater.”
“I hate the smell of dead bodies,” Willis chimed in, before smiling at the cards in his hands, “I’m all in.”
“Maybe I am pushing thirty,” his gaze traced the metal frame of the bunk above him; everything was drab and utilitarian in nature. He missed the woven rugs, peacock chairs, and incense that Jeannie kept their place filled with. “But wisdom comes with age.”
Too bad wisdom won’t save your hide.
One thing was for certain: Elias Grodin wouldn’t make it out of this war alive.
……
Time at base evaporated in the dusty humidity before choppers were being filled with Alpha squad. M16s were loaded with fresh rounds, safety still flicked on in case turbulence ended with someone’s head getting shot clean off.
Christmas had passed in a haze of cigarette smoke, painfully sober. The young sergeant felt his altruism begin to fade like the early morning fog that lingered across the horizon as the sun rose.
He thought of his parents. His kid brother and sister. His wife.
Ex wife.
That idea made his gut coil tightly, thinking of the woman he once loved living a carefree life while a stranger no doubt warmed his side of the bed. Doyle nudged him with a boney shoulder as the helicopter blades sliced through the air, beginning it’s descent. If rain wasn’t pouring down like a monsoon, the heat would be baking them alive. Elias could already feel the sweat dripping down his brow and burning clear blue eyes.
Today, they were scouting past the DMZ, on the Cambodian border. They all feared another battle, considering how ill equipped and wet behind the ears the majority was. Even if Viet Cong soldiers were new to this game, they were always ruthless and tactical.
The Americans never were.
Alpha began humping over shallow foothills as the border was breached, hoping to secure some land on the trail to Hanoi. The city had already been bombed overhead, giving them a slight advantage. As much of an advantage as kicking the wasp’s nest could be.
Hauling ass across the border of Laos left them open for attack in the demilitarized zone. If there rules in war, none of them mattered here. Elias lead his men, using a rusted machete to break through foliage as company A forged their ow path through the jungles. Brush shook a few yard a way, guns cocked as the sergeant quickly reached for his own. Doyle’s sweat laden finger budged on the trigger, a few rounds colliding with the trunk of a teakwood. A frightened pangolin emerged from the underbrush, stubby legs waddling in the opposite direction.
“Be careful with that thing, private,” he scolded gently, wiping sweat from his brow with one hand, “Don’t want to give our position away.”
“Yessir,” the younger man saluted before pushing glasses up the bridge of a thin nose. Trek continuing through a dense thicket, a few monkeys screeching from the canopy of trees scraping the sky above. The sun was muted in the jungle though the humidity was assaulting the senses. Elias licked his lips, mouth salted from rivulets of sweat. The radio crackled, their commanding officer asking whereabouts when the RTO responded in a hissed whisper. No NVA seemed to be near, but letting their guard down was a sure way to get themselves butchered. The sergeant attempted to drown the distracting thoughts, his subconscious taunting him.
Kill the first, right? Even though your enemies are doing the same as you: survive and unwinnable war.
Knuckles were white, fingers wrapped harshly around the hilt of the knife. The blade sliced easily through a web of branches with a quelled rage. Now wasn’t the time to chide himself and think about the morality of mortality. Soon, shafts of sunlight were shining through the sparsening tree line. In front of them was a stretch of land that stretched out in planes between the jungle. Blue hills rolled in the distance. Doyle attempted to step forward before a muscular arm popped up.
“Watch it, boys.” Elias warned, having seen how these battles played out before. If they were lucky, they could crawl through the tall grass, watching for mines and avoiding an ambush. If they were unlucky…he didn’t care to think about that. “Spread out and stay low. Firearms at the ready.”
The gnarled machete was threaded through the leather holster, M16 quickly pulled from the strap diagonal across his torso. Beads of sweat decorated the lines of his freckled chest, staining canvas fatigues. It was a cliché, too still, too quiet…
Doyle, the RTO, and the rest of the privates spanned out as the bone-dry grass scraped against their knees. The crunch of their boots was as loud of breaking glass against the silent soundscape. It put his nerves on edge, made his mind race:
We’re going to die out here.
Crunches follow their every step as the men approached the bookending tree line. Doyle stopped suddenly, stifling a yawn as he turned on his heel.
“I think we’re clear, sarge!” his voice somewhere between a whisper and shout. Before Elias could even chide his underling again. A step forward changed everything. He’d run into a claymore, the PVC was sent flying, body torn to confetti as he fell to folded knees, slumping forward.
“Doyle!” Elias roared, suddenly frightened and forgetting his own command. Then hell was breaking loose. Commands were shouted in Vietnamese, likely telling the invisible soldiers to ‘Charge! Take the bastards down!’
Carnage was shed in a matter of seconds as his legs were carrying him to the edge where he took cover in a collapsing foxhole. Dirt rained down over tawny waves, helmet hooked firmly atop his rucksack. His RTO, Richards he thought, fell forward, bloody and riddled with holes.
“I’m not gonna make it,” he wailed, blood sputtering from between his dusty lips. Elias gritted, jumping up to empty a few rounds. He thought he saw one of the NVA fall before ducking down again. “I’m going out, man. The medic got his head blown off.”
Grodin didn’t know what to say. The man was going to die. They’d know each other for maybe a week. Hell, he didn’t even remember his name. Death wasn’t worth running from out here. The only thing that made it worse was not being able to comfort them in dying moments.
Instead, a large hand clapped a bloody shoulder, heart lurching as the man’s chest deflated. Eyes glazed over. Bullets sprayed over the meadow, eviscerating the rest of the squad in mere minutes. Dark clouds of blood blossomed from the shoulder of his uniform, shrapnel embedded in his left pectoral.
“This is Sergeant Grodin,” he winced while speaking through the radio. All my men are down: Willis, Doyle…I need back up. The VC is closing in.”
Hidden in the shallow foxhole, he only heard static as another wave of gunfire was released. There was only one thing that could save him now. Tears welled in his eyes as long fingers dipped into Doyle’s blood, pooling in the moist sod. It was the most macabre painting as he disguised himself as a corpse lying face down as boots squelched closer in the mud.
Then he waited.

Day Twenty-Seven: Bonus
It’s late. I have packing to do, and I really need to get to bed. But since tomorrow is the last day of the trip, I feel I ought to start doing some “wrapping up.” I’ll save the larger philosophical issues for tomorrow. But here are a few random (and very minor) things I learned over the last four weeks.
As is common in Eastern countries, religious sites and many homes and businesses in Southeast Asia will have a raised threshold that you have to step over before entering. Almost always, you have to remove your shoes before doing so. A set of racks is helpfully placed nearby. If you ask someone why there's a raised threshold, these are among the answers you will receive:
1. To keep water out during heavy rainstorms.
2. To keep small animals out.
3. To keep evil spirits out.
4. To keep crawling babies in. (This reason is usually only given at private homes.)
5. Because, in order to step over the threshold, you have to look down. You are thus bowing and giving the place you are entering a sign of respect.
In most cases, I was given two of these reasons, typically one of them “practical” and the other one “spiritual.” But they were rarely the same two reasons as I moved from place to place. People tend to mix and match their explanations according to their personal beliefs or local custom and then to generalize those explanations.
Also, it is generally protocol to step over the raised threshold, not on it. Once, however, I was surprised to see one of my guides step directly on the threshold. I was (I must admit) a bit shocked, and I said, “I thought you weren’t supposed to do that."
He looked at me with some surprise and replied, “Meh. Old superstition. No one believes that anymore.”
I suppose I should've known this, but I also learned that Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are considered Indochina, but Thailand isn’t. That division both makes sense, and it doesn’t. It doesn’t make sense because the borders of all four countries have been highly fluid throughout history. Territory that was part of one country for a certain number of years often became part of another country later. And just keeping track of all those shifts can be an intimidating task.
But it makes some sense, too. There’s a different “feel” when you move from Indochina to Thailand. One rather obvious shift: Because of French influence, people drive on the right in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Because of British influence, they drive on the left in Thailand. It's a small change, but it's noticeable.
In addition, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos have had a major and lasting influence of the Communist Party. They’ve gotten rid of their kings, and they seem quite happy about that. Thailand still has its king, and the Thais seem pretty happy about that, too. Suum cuique.
As a result, Thailand was an ally of the US when the US was waging war in Indochina. That war has left deep scars in those countries, particularly in Vietnam and Laos. If the impact of what the French and Americans did in this region seems less of a daily presence in Cambodia, it’s only because (as the Cambodians will freely tell you) they did worse things to themselves … and they will tell you this with that haunting Cambodian smile. There are similarities but also important differences among the peoples of this region.
It has been a somewhat unreal experience “vacationing” in cities and regions with names that, when I was growing up, were daily mentioned on the news as war zones. Hanoi. Da Nang. Cambodia. Laos.
It was unreal but also, in a strange way, affirming. If those places that were once so associated with bombing and death are now places where we can go for culture and relaxation, who’s to say that other spots that today are associated with bombing and death may not also one day be places where future generations go on package tours “to get away from it all”?
Maybe someday someone will be writing a diary about a leisurely month they spent in Ukraine or Gaza and commenting on things so seemingly trivial as which side of the road people drive on.
We can only hope.

Saturday, April 1
Have had a couple of days in Phuket to think about our Vietnam experience. At our Farewell Dinner, Tuan asked us to share two trip highlights. I didn't yet feel ready.
One reason was that many highlights were moments that happened separate from the group. Swimming with Aaron in the South China Sea. Looking at the colored lanterns while walking hand- in-hand on the night streets of Hoi An. Seeing Aaron's glow as he told me about his standout dinner experience at Rue and then offering four carefully packaged take out boxes so that I might enjoy the experience too. Getting measured for a second dress at that sweet little woman's shop. Having our quiet cup of coffee on the deck before the group got up, looking at the wonders of Ha Long Bay. Sharing a drink on the roof top at The Rex after a memorable performance in Saigon. Connecting with Nancy as a special friend.
Tumblr media
The other reason was that I needed to let it all sink in. The moments I shared that night were right, but the "why's" weren't yet clear to me.
The impact of ongoing war lives on in Vietnam. 100 years of tortuous French colonial rule led to new ideas under Ho Chi Minh. Then, as so often happens, greed prevailed and land reform was a grab that back fired. Promises broken led to civil war. The winners of that war who are tied to the Party have much privilege today. A full 90% of the population however is not party to that privilege. They work oh so hard. They toe the line. The Communist ideals continue to evolve within the modern global market economy. They worry about China. The country is clearly in transition.
So indeed, one of my most memorable moments was meeting the gentle man from the south who shared so much. And in so doing, taught so much. The idea that I'm not able to record anything he said which is still just unfathomable. It all really sunk in.
Tumblr media
A country broken? It's hard to say. The people are unwaveringly positive and present focused.
A second most memorable moment was meeting the nun at the monastery. She exuded peace. Care. Love. Presence. Acceptance. I realize now that watching Tuan interact with each of our hosts on the trip made everything all the more impactful. He is a perfect representative of the kind of respect, honesty and kindness that is so important to the country's culture.
Tumblr media
The spontaneous sharing of music is always special. Imagine indeed.
Someone in our group asked about recycling. There is trash littered in the waterways and streets throughout the country. Later, Tuan saw a woman on the street who was sorting through trash bags. He stopped to ask her what she collected and how she got paid, all the while treating her with the utmost of respect. After an insightful conversation, he pulled a $20 US bill out of his pocket (a fortune!) and offered it to her in thanks. Classic Tuan. She was overwrought with joy. (Another traveling insight ~ we are literally wealthy in Vietnam. To not even think about a taxi ride, the cost of a meal or a massage is so wildly freeing. And yet so jarringly difficult too. So . . . Not . . . Fair.)
Tumblr media
The Bamboo Circus at the Opera House was a perfect culmination of our trip. The Vietnamese are flexible like bamboo. May these beautiful people find their way to ongoing peace, health and happiness. ❤️🇻🇳❤️
