#Vika Komova

Since a lot of people compare them, if vika and listy competed under the same cop who do you think would win?

its hard to say bc obviously komova's routine construction and approach would be much different competing under the current code but i'd say listunova would beat her today but i'd probably prefer to watch her even if the scores didnt reflect that lol. komova would beat listunova in 2012

I was thinking about the question I got yesterday about Vika Komova and why she didn’t make my favorite gymnasts on each apparatus for recent quads (the answer is that she just didn’t but also I don’t think of her as really in recent quads, nothing against her).  But one of the discussions that came after was how for a lot of tumblr gym fandom she was the person who made them fall in love with the sport.

And here is my answer:  I had a different entry point.  Lilia Podkopayeva.  And a lot of the way I see people talk about Komova is how I would talk about Podkopayeva so if I’m reaching for a gymnast in that mold... that’s who I think of rather than Komova (or I go further back and think about someone like Laschenova or Boginskaya or name six million beautiful Soviets). 

But I did want to say something about someone who did make all my apparatus lists right now and that’s Kovacs Zsofia.  I think of her in that same line too and much like Podkopayeva her career is full of heart breaking inconsistency.  One of the things I’ve observed is that gym fandom has remembered Lilia for her stunning series of 1995 Worlds to 1996 Euros to 1996 Olympics and we’ve kind of forgotten how often she was in a position to win all the things before those three meets and fell on her butt out of bounds or off the beam.  She was crushingly inconsistent.  Until she wasn’t and when she found consistency she was going to win all the things and did.

That’s kind of what I see in Kovacs.  She is a true all arounder, achingly beautiful in a very classical form of gymnastics I associate with Soviets and former Soviets.  And she keeps falling on random things.  Some day Zsofia Kovacs will figure out how to hit all 4 events in the same night and I hope we forget all the heart break and talk for years about how Zsofia did Zsofia things the way we talk about how Lilia did Lilia things.  And not how we talk about how Vika did Vika things... I kind of see the three of them in the same mold with unfortunately the same flaws as well as the same beauty.

Vika Komova’s floor routine from 2018 Russian Championships. She looks very promising but definitely has not solved her endurance issues. The double layout was solid and the double arabian looked like it got good height. Then there was a simple double twist and a double pike that she had to put her hand down. She had some issues with her spins too but - progress!

I wonder who has the Shaposhnika variation record for most variants competed. I was thinking it could be Aliya since she has competed five of them so far; Maloney, van Leuwen, Seitz, Chow 1/2 and Komova II. Komova has four she competed; Komova I, Komova II, Maloney and Van Leuwen.

Maybe Becky Downie or Beth Tweddle have more given they have (had) really long careers.

Daria Skrypnik has four too; Komova II, Maloney, Chow (2015) and Chow 1/2.

Worlds Team Update.

Girls that are in contention/are on the nominative team - according to Valentina. Team will be decided after this selection camp.

• Melnikova, Simakova, Aleexeva, Akhaimova, Perebinosova , Mustafina & Spiridonova.

So I'm guessing the first three plan to do AA, Lilia VT/FX and then whoever is stronger out of the last three will do UB/BB?

I honestly didn’t expect Vikas come back to be that good. You can see they are taking things slowly but they’re on the right track. Few silly mistakes on ub bb and fx but she slayed that arabian on beam so it’s all good
