How much blood do vampires drink in a sitting?

In a sitting maybeeeeee anywhere around one and a half to two pints? Enough to be substantial but not lethal. They don't feed everyday either, they give the humans time to build up their red blood cells again. Here are some of the symptoms I found from losing this volume of blood!

Cold and clammy limbs.

Pale skin.

May become confused, disorientated and flustered.

Heart racing and palpitations.

Feeling exhausted and sluggish. Weak and dizzy.

Nauseated.

Vampires don't always drink a lot. Sometimes they may only take a sip to tide them by, sometimes they may drain their blood bag dry!

In your world, what determines the taste of a human’s blood? Genetics, character, hormones? Why is Vince so drawn to Declan’s blood?

Blood type is a factor! Declan has O-Negative blood, which is one of the rarer blood groups. For vampires, it has a richer, cleaner, delectable taste than maybe more common blood types. It's alluring to vamps.

Hormones also play a role! Vince noted how Declan's blood tasted nicer when he was scared or stressed, so adrenaline definitely affects blood taste. Blood with high levels of insulin might taste sugary or a little thicker. Or high levels of testosterone might make it taste a little muskier?

So when I write my next Shattered chapter, I'm currently planning that I'll probably keep it still in our current recovery arc and pushing forward with present day Declan chapters!

However, I could also do a Vince and Declan captivity flashback, I have plenty in the bank! I'm just curious as to what readers of shattered are feeling!

Does Declan’s youth have anything to do with why Vince wants him so bad? Would the dynamic have been different if Declan was, say, a middle aged father of three? While there will always be a power differential due to them being different species, would their interactions have been different if Declan had been the older and physically bigger one?

Yes! Declan's youth definitely plays a role in why Vince desires him so much! With their age difference, Vince perceives him as young, small, weak and helpless. There's a sense of vulnerability, and Declan's youth makes it easier for Vince to manipulate and dominate him and feel superior.

If Declan were older, I think the dynamic would be slightly different. His age, life-experience, and probably confidence that comes with maturity would change how Vince would view him. He might view him as a man and not a boy. Maybe Declan would be less easily intimated or manipulated, and he might have more physical strength behind him to challenge Vince.

Is the taste of a human’s blood affected by their mood? My headcanon is that Declan’s blood becomes tastier to Vince the more scared he is, which is why Vince prefers to constantly torture him instead of a more clinical approach

Anon!! I'm so glad you asked this ahaha! 💖 I've actually been re-reading some Shattered chapters today to get in the writing headspace and I just finished up Chapter 7 where Vince says to Declan that he tastes better when he's terrified!

"You know," he lifts Declan's salty tear-tracked face up to look at him, "Somehow, you taste better in pain. Maybe it's the adrenaline streaming through your blood… the fear adds to it. But I like it. Has a certain kick. We should do this more often. Get you scared out of your wits… make my meal divine."

Perfect timing! I know it definitely tastes better when they're scared!

Was Declan allowed to brush or shower when he was Vince’s prisoner? Does his cell include a washroom?

Yes! Declan was allowed to brush and shower! He had the tiniest washroom in his cell and the tiniest kitchenette too.

The washroom only had the bare necessities; a shower hose and drain, a toilet and a sink with a plastic mirror over it (so he couldn't smash it and use glass shards as a weapon). Vince also left him a bucket filled with toiletries and cleaning supplies so Declan could clean his own quarters.

The problem came when Declan was too weak to make it to his washroom, or when he couldn't find the energy to even crawl for food 😞💔 I plan to show some flashbacks to this in the story when Declan's getting weaker and can't fend for himself and Vince has to force jugs of water down his throat, or drag his limp body into the shower to douse him with the shower head.

Had a fever dream that Vince was Italian and couldn’t speak a word of English which made Declan extra terrified because this scary vampire was monologuing at him in a foreign language and he was like, whaaat. Kinda tickled by the thought of Vince having to threaten Declan in sign language and grudgingly picking up elementary English books.

five sentence ask game-

"what will it take for you to learn?"

"What will it take for you to learn?!" Vince roars, kicking Declan's frail, sleeping body from his mattress. He springs awake, tumbling to the floor, all the colour draining from his already pale and gaunt face when he locks eyes with the vampire.

He didn't wake up in time. Again. For the third time this week. Declan knows the routine, it's ingrained in his skull; the second he hears the jingle of the padlock, the door being unbolted - he has ten seconds max to scuttle into the center of the room and bend to his knees.

But he's so exhausted. So weak. His minds so foggy and his energy depleted. He knows the rules like the back of his hand, he doesn't need to learn them. It's not disobedience. It's fatigue.

"S-Sor-"

Vince backhands him across the face, slamming him to the floor. Reeling and dazed. He pushes on his shaking arms to lift himself back up, Vince stamps him back down. Declan resigns, crumbling onto his front and resting his pounding head against the cold concrete.

"Repeat after me, human. You are nothing but food."

Declan feels Vince's parasitic control worm through his ears and seize hold of his brain, pulling at his strings like a puppet. Throbbing pain bursts behind his eye sockets, and his eyes glaze over until they're cloudy and unfocused.

"I am nothing but food, master," Declan robotically parrots the words. The voice that scratches through his throat doesn't even sound like his own. It's the first time he's properly spoken in weeks - Vince only likes to hear him scream. His vocal chords feel sore and swollen, fried to a crisp.

"You live to serve me."

"I live to serve you, master," Declan's voice breaks, tears well in his eyes. It's true. He'd admit all this were he not under the vampires influence. It still hurts to confess.

There's really no need to use persuasion on Declan. He complies every step of the way. Anything for a second of relief.

"Every breath you take is because I allow it."

Vince says that like it's a mercy. That allowing Declan to still live and breathe is a favour, and one that Declan could never repay. It feels like the cruelest torture Vince could ever inflict. Forcing Declan to live like this.

"Every breath I take is because you allow it, master."

Vince erupts into a fang-filled grin of glee, his eyes light up.

"I. Own. You."

Declan isn't human. He is food. He breathes to live, and he lives to serve his master. He is property - Vince's property. Vince owns him.

"You. Own. Me. Master", Declan croaks.

"Good," Vince huffs, leaning down to pat Declan on the head. "Now get on your knees. And you will repeat all you've just said until whenever I decide to finally tell you to stop," Vince commands.

I really really want to say yes! It's not anything I've ever mentioned or settled on in Shattered but I've always imagined Declan with a rarer blood type and that's why it's more appealing and delicious to Vince 👀

Do vampires have a sexual appetite in your world? They obviously procreate and have families, but do they have base desires the way humans do? We need food and we need sex and both of those things are separate, but for vampires drinking blood seems more…carnal than eating regular food. So is sex an impulse that exists as strongly for them?

Did it have anything to do with why Vince took Declan? He obviously hasn’t touched him in *that* way, but was it ever a subconscious factor as to why Declan appeals to him?

Vampires definitely do have a sexual appetite! In the same way that humans would - sometimes maybe more or less so than others! For example, August is asexual, he feels more romantically and has little to no desire or interest in sex. He would have romantic relationships though!

And you're totally right about feeding! It is a lot more carnal than human hunger. Their bloodlust is an impossible, primal craving (painful starvation) that consumes every thought and with how weak they become without it - it's that sense of powerless that drives them too. But I would say their sex drive isn't as intense.

Luckily for Declan, Vince's motives have not ever been sexual. Declan is just pure sustenance (and a fun little plaything). Vince truly did just catch a sent of mouth-watering blood and snatched the human it belonged too. Declan could have been anyone, and Vince has had other blood bags before through the same reasoning. That's not to say that other vampires don't take or pick humans for that reason...

Hi Shannon! How are you? It’s Declan Boyfriend Anon. So I was rereading Shattered (it’s my comfort read now) and your answer to one of my older questions. You said that Declan might have been able to evade Vince if he simply hadn’t gone back to his house as his scent would eventually have faded enough, and it got me thinking.

Would Vince have grabbed Declan in public? Hypothetically, if Declan had perpetually remained around a very big, public group of people (not, for example, his family in a private dwelling) where grabbing him would become a public spectacle, would Vince have risked that level or exposure? The humans obviously know about vampires and know enough to take precautions, so what kind of public response would that have caused?

To answer your question, Vince would not risk kidnapping Declan in a crowded public setting! The risk of getting caught, captured, killed by hunters is too high and unfortunately he's not stupid enough to chance it. He would have turned his eyes to a new potential bloodbag if Declan was unattainable. I imagine if he was hunting with a few vampires though... maybe he'd try it?

Who has the best and worst mother in Shattered?

Worst mother by far is August's mother. She was so authoritarian in her parenting and commanded respect - she cared more about her family's reputation than her own children. I don't think August has ever felt a drop of love from her, and he doesn't really have many happy memories with her. August fears her rather than respects her. And now he's cut her off entirely, and he's better off for it.

Best mother is Declan's! Oh, I promise she's an absolute angel. The love and dedication she has for Declan melts me. She never stops searching, waiting, hoping for him to come home - even when everyone tells her Declan is most likely dead. She lives and breathes her children, she would never give up on him. And when he's home, she's so patient and beautiful with him 🥹
