Sorry I took so long to answer, I wanted to add other stuff like movies and animated stuff, but the post was already getting so long... Anyways, there you go ! This is totally based on my own (rather obscure) tastes, so there’s a lot of recurring actors and creative teams. Let’s go ! (Also your French is pretty good !!)

a: Le Visiteur du Futur / The Visitor from the Future

Scifi comedy web show, made by François Descraques 

2009. Whenever Raph, a guy in his late teens/early twenties, is about to do some very mundane, “everyday life” thing, another guy appears out of thin air (literally) to tell him to NOT DO THAT, because if he does this normal thing, he’s going to start a very wacky and silly chain reaction which will always lead to the end of the world. Raph just wants to live his life in peace but the Visitor from the future won’t stop going after him for some reason (which gets revealed throughout the first season). 

The first episode was made in 2009, and was originally just a 1 minute long skit. Halfway through season 1, the episodes become longer and the real plot starts to appear. This show has time travel, zombies, betrayals, found family trope, love, lots of robots (all played by the same man), and CANON QUEER REPRESENTATION (which made me realise I’m bi, sidenote). 

Even though the show’s pilot turns 12 years old this year, the production team and the fandom are still very much active ! Le Visiteur du Futur (VdF for short) is 4 seasons long, has a novel and a manga set after the last season, and there is a movie set after the events of the novel coming out in the next year or so.

b)  Le Cycle des Balls /The Balls Trilogy

No idea how to categorise this…, so I’m just gonna give you a… an explanation. 

First of : “Le Cycle des Balls” is NOT the official title, just a name the fandom came up with because this show doesn’t really have one. It’s got a different name for every season, and I don’t even know how to summarise them in a non-confusing, non-spoiling way. So here’s the summary my friend @a-random-fandom-friend made: 

“It's a web-serie in the comdy genre, about an unassuming guy (Tom) that wants to "grow balls" to get back his girlfriend (Emma), so his friend (Mitch) invents for him the Psycho Balls Therapy and shenanigans ensue. It's dumb most of the time but it can be emotional and it's well constructed, and there's 3 seasons ! The last one got ghosts and aliens. Andmaybethingsdontendupheterowhoknowsnotme”

B) SURICATE

A comedic trio from the early to mid 2010’s, with Raphaël Descraques, Vincent Tirel and Julien Josselin. They’ve made two films :

Les Dissociés / The Nobodies (1h15 long movie)

A couple of partygoers wake up after a night out, only to find out that… Their bodies have been stolen, and they are now in the thieves’ bodies. The “thieves” get in touch with them and tell them that they need the couple’s bodies for a mission, and that they’ll give them back after it. Except they also get stolen. The couple now has to join the “Nobodies”, a group of people who can swap bodies with other people to stop one of them, gone rogue, from taking over the world. Oh and they also have to take care of a 5-year-old girl stuck in the body of a bearded 30-year-old man. 

It’s really fun, and queer in the sense that it deviates from the cisgender-heterosexual norm and asks questions about gender and identity in general.

Le Fantôme de Merde / Shitty Ghost (short film, 24 minutes long)

A ghost in a haunted hotel is trying to move up in the ranks of the ghost administration, and for that, he has to scare clients away from the hotel. Except he sucks. Like, really bad. Nobody’s scared of him. Until one day, as tries to scare some guy in his bathroom, his “victim” starts roasting him on his technique. Apparently, the guy can see ghosts. 

And thus begins a strange and wacky friendship between the two of them. 

I haven’t watched it in a while so I don’t know if it still holds up, but I remember liking it back in the day.

3) Cyprien Iov’s short films

This man started his youtube career by making some short humorous videos about mundane everyday life things, but turned towards making short fiction films around 2014.

He’s made quite a few of them over the years, but I can only recommend the ones I’ve seen, which are :

2) Youtube channels

Nota Bene, by Benjamin Brillaud : 

Pretty much anything and everything about history, ranging from Greek, Egyptian and Chinese mythologies to obscure French events like the Vendée war and cathedrals’ architecture. The tone of the channel is pretty light and fun, even when talking about pretty dark stuff, which makes it easier to learn about those kinds of things without feeling too heavy afterwards.

Dirty Biology, by Léo Grasset

About biology, evolution, microscopic organisms’ reproduction, documentaries about asian regions and/or oceanic biodiversity and lots of stuff. The tone is… Erratic, to say the least. The best way to describe it would be : “Very knowledge, much learn wow”. 

Le Fossoyeur de Films by François Theurel

Halfway between serious film analyses and silly webseries. This channel is part of what made me interested into filmmaking. 

Hparadoxae, by Alistair Houdayer

About disabilities, autism, by a disabled autistic transgender person. Advices on how to handle being all that, and how the French system works (or doesn’t) for disabled people. Educative videos about autism, too. The tone is way more serious than the other channels I’ve recommended, but it’s not depressing either.

Mx. Cordélia

A queer french author recommending books with feminism and lgbt+ representation that go beyond “able-bodied cis white twinks”.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST : Ronde Queer ! 

Queer stuff by my friends and I ! Mostly media analysis and recommendations but not limited to it. We’re not very regular schedule-wise though.

Plot:  A band of students comes to celebrate the New Year in an old manor house isolated from everything. But soon after their arrival, strange events disrupt the atmosphere, before the party turns squarely to the nightmare.

Why I Watched It: I’ll throw my hands up on this one, I heard some decent things about it but going in I thought it was more horror than comedy, I blame myself.

Random Thoughts: So this is a France/Belgium film so yes I watched it with sub-titles.  The film’s original title is Le manoir.

I have written this many times before but for my money the horror/comedy sub-genre is the hardest to pull off well, it’s the old problem if it’s too scary then the humor seems out of place and it’s it’s played more for laughs the horror just doesn’t land.

What I Liked: Sadly not a lot, not going to lie this just wasn’t for me, not the worst movie I’ve ever seen but it didn’t work on a ton of levels for me, so give me a second and let me try and write something positive.  The Mansion it’s self is a decent setting, and the film is very weird and very European, this is not a cookie cutter Hollywood horror movie.

What I Didn’t Like: This film is maybe the text book case of why horror/comedies don’t often work, the film is not funny or scary bottom line and really we could end the review right here where the film really misses the boat for me is the humor it’s gross out and really dumb humor not built out of character but just really dumb forced situations. Some of the actors are fine but the characters are almost all terrible, they’re mostly unlikable and I know the plot summary says students but they’re like older 20′s early 30′s.

The film doesn’t know what it wants to be, it’s going for very dark humor cause to be honest where the film goes with a twist is very dark and doesn’t work with the over all tone of the film.  The tone is another bad part of this film they go for a lighter silly tone but then when the killings start and things move more to horror the film keeps the same light tone.  Also there’s a couple of characters so unlikable they’re hard to watch.

I have to also point out the direction is not great some scenes just go on way too long, they don’t work and they beat a dead house also the film is way too long, this should have been maybe 85 minutes.  Also the twists don’t work.  I’ll lastly complain about the horror/killings of the film, not filmed well and are really very boring.

Final Thoughts: Didn’t like this film at all and to be honest almost didn’t get through the whole thing but sadly I made it through and no it didn’t get any better.
