Jameson is a huge theatre nerd and he converted Avery so now they listen/watch/go to musicals together

they sing and quote them so often, everyone gets SOOOO annoyed

for Halloween, they went as pre say no to this Hamilton and Elliza one year and as jd and veronica another year and everyone LOST IT

Jameson even surprised her with Hamilton tickets but she had to solve a riddle to see where they were going

the riddle was a single letter that just said “My Dearest, Avery” and nothing else (iykyk)

Grayson has secretly watched every episode of Dance Moms and even memorized some of the dances

Avery one time did a spicy dance on TikTok and Jameson absolutely LOST HIS MIND

Alisa made her take the video down, because she said it was too “inappropriate” (even though it wasn’t even as bad as half of the other dances out there)

Jameson managed to save it beforehand and still has it to this day

Xander has read Avery’s diary and saw some THINGS things she wrote (especially about jamie (iykyk)) and he almost died but she just laughed it off

Libby often says stuff that sounds really dirty but she doesn’t mean it that way and gets very confused why everyone started laughing at what she was saying

Top says he doesn’t care if he is Mew’s first (Mew tells him he can’t say “as long as you’re my last” or else he will throw up) -> the idea of permanence of a "first love" or "last love", but also there is ephemerality in not caring whether you are a person's first or last (acknowledging they have a past too, etc.)

Ray and Sand make future plans together to open a liquor business -> eyes on the future, wanting to build something permanent and lasting together, being bound by a business relationship and not only a romantic one

Yo is still with Plug in the time skip to February 2024

Yo wants a permanent record of their promise to let her stay at the hostel (“Let me record that”)

in the time jump to February 2024, Cheum has a framed and printed photograph of their first day at the hostel -> very permanent and material reminder of their friendship and this time in their life

Ephemerality: YOLO, change

Mew says he gave Top another chance but if he messes up again they are done (second chances)

"People only realize the value of things after they lose them"

Top suggests not inheriting from his dad and building his and Mew’s life together (Mew isn’t interested in having Top act like a sugar daddy) but Mew tells him not to be hasty -> YOLO, those who are wealthy have a different relationship to money and the future

Nick and Boston also discuss future plans (taking photography classes and having an exhibition, etc.) -> though unlike the other couples, they have an end to their relationship in mind as they talk about the future (permanency and ephemerality)

Nick says Boston should do what he wants (i.e., pursue photography) since he has wasted enough time doing things he doesn’t want to do (pursuing a degree in business)

Boston says he is not the type to plan things and Nick can’t keep up with him, Boston says they should just enjoy the time they have left now -> YOLO, living in the moment

As a dig at Boeing, Sand (who says he is like a dog when he loves someone) says Ray “doesn’t get a new dog when bored” -> Boeing left Sand for Top because he was bored, YOLO and ephemeral behaviour

Boston's view of non-monogamy (he can kiss whoever, but he is only sweet with and only goes home with one person) -> ephemeral, contrasts with Nick's monogamous view of being boyfriends (all these aspects are exclusively reserved for one person)

At the New Year’s party the friend group says, “We should throw away bad things and start fresh”

Boston says he slept with Top not because he hated Mew but because he didn’t give a shit about anything -> boredom, interesting to note that "boredom" and "not caring" can have the same effect on others as actively targeting them because you hate them

Sand says it is a bad idea to go into business with partners, but Ray says it will be fine (not considering consequences, YOLO)

Mix shows up at the end and is flirty, the way the end is shot seems to imply he may shake things up/that these relationships aren’t as permanent and settled as they might seem

The ephemerality of keeping some friends and "letting others go" (e.g., Mew remaining friends with Ray and Cheum but not with Boston)

Change

I have been tracking the idea of change and what the characters think of change over the course of this show (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Once again, people are saying they don’t think Top can change (Boeing's said it, Mew's said it, now Cheum questions it too)

Top believes that people can change (as he has changed for Mew - he says this episode that Mew has made him want to be a better man), but he doesn't think that Ray can change (he thinks that Ray will always be in love with Mew, or could fall for Mew again)

Top is better with fire now

Mew and Top talk about compromise and change (e.g, Top says he doesn’t like people who get mad but don’t say what is wrong and Mew recognizes that that is something he does and says “I will try and improve”); they say “We have a lot of adjustments to make. Let’s take it step by step” - if they can made these adjustments and change, they can be together for a long time (permanency)

On New Year’s Eve, Mew wants to put away all his books and wake up to a new room and a new life in a new year -> change, moving past this past year and phase of life, starting anew

Boeing has said that Top can't change when he was trying to woo Mew, this episode he says he doesn't like rock music but he can enjoy it for Sand (Boeing could change for a relationship)

Boston has acknowledged the possibility of changing (Nick might be an exception to his usual disinterest in relationships), he adjusts his behaviour (he is very affectionate and sweet, he kisses Nick in public) because he knows that’s what Nick likes; in this episode he says “everyone needs time to figure out what their heart desires” -> adjusting for someone else; change, growth, settling into one’s self, also having the privilege of time to be able to do that

Boston says he won’t kiss anyone else anymore (offers to change for Nick), Nick says Boston might be the type of person who rolls better alone and he shouldn’t have to change himself -> you can change for relationships but also you shouldn't have to, their needs are just incompatible

Boston says he wants to go to New York because he thinks it might help him change (“I just want to be in a new place. It might change me into a new person”); though Mew says it won’t change him significantly, because if Boston only changes his outer self and not the inner, nothing will really have changed

Mew has doubted that Top can change, though now he has decided to give Top a second chance; Mew doubts that Boston can make significant change in himself though he wishes him the best of luck in improving himself

Ray says he wants to quit drinking and stop going to bars, Sand is changing his life to be better for Ray’s sobriety (not selling liquor, no longer working at the bar, etc) -> again, changing for relationships (and for themselves)

Self-awareness and improvement

I was struck by the amount of talk about self-awareness and improvement this episode, which of course relates to the idea of change:

Mew and Top talking in the bathtub and being aware of places where their habits would both the other person, showing self-awareness of their own habits and flaws and pledging to work on them (relationships require work and compromise)

Nick says Boston should stop trying to be something he is not, Nick has also realized for himself that he is not interested in non-monogamy and, despite their feelings for each other, his and Boston’s definitions of a relationship are irreconcilable

Boston says, “If you really love me, you must accept who I am”

Mew says it has been a tough year but he got to know himself better and next year will be even better - what they gained this year is self awareness

Nick says that next year he wants to focus more on himself

Mew and Top talk about what they have learned from each other - Top says thank you for making me want to be a better man, Mew says thanks to Top he knows how far he can go if he loves someone

Ray says that his sobriety is up to him, everywhere is risky because there is alcohol being sold everywhere

Accountability and honesty

Plenty of instances of accountability (or a lack of accountability) and moments of honesty this episode:

Cheum says that because Top stole Sand’s boyfriend, and Sand is dating Ray, so Top has to apologize if he wants to be part of the group

Cheum gives a perfunctory apology to Boston when they run into him in the hallway at school (she says she learned the truth from Atom so there are no hard feelings now and apologizes for slapping him), she says she can put Boston’s name back on their project

Boston tells the group he doesn’t care about graduating he just wants to be their friends again

Sand teaches the kids at Ray’s community service how to apologize, and says those who do something bad should be punished

Mew says “to start over, you must first accept your past”

Top and Ray reconcile and are polite with each other

Mew and Top have an honest conversation about their flaws and pet peeves and how they will have to work to adjust and be together (e.g, Top says he doesn’t like people who get mad but don’t say what is wrong and Mew recognizes that that is something he does and says “I will try and improve”)

Honest conversation between Nick and Boston about their differing definitions of “boyfriend”; Nick says that their relationship situation/ending is fair, Boston was honest about how much he can give

Cheum invites Boston to the New Year’s party and asks if he is going to apologize to them

Boston apologizes for sleeping with Cheum's brother; he apologizes for recording Mew and Ray and for telling Sand about Ray’s feelings for Mew, but he does not apologize for punching Ray; Boston also apologizes to Mew for sleeping with Top

Boston asks why Mew forgave Top but not him, Top says he had to go through a whole process for forgiveness first so Boston can’t compare himself to Top

Mew says Boston is avoiding his problems by running away to New York; Mew does not apologize to Boston for blackmailing him

Top apologizes to Sand for “stealing” Boeing

Mew asks Top if he thinks Mew is mean for not forgiving Boston, Top says that even though he and Boston did the same bad thing, “This is your life. You have the right to choose who to keep and who to let go.”
