RIP Kirstie Alley!

The role I got to know you first was Virgilia Hazard in North & South, and boy, this woman could fight for her beliefs. Which led to death, unfortunately.

Kirstie Louise Alley (January 12, 1951 – December 5, 2022) Film and television actress. Her breakout role was as Rebecca Howe in the NBC sitcom Cheers (1987–1993), receiving an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe in 1991 for the role. From 1997 to 2000, she starred in the sitcom Veronica's Closet, earning additional Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Alley made her film debut in 1982 in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, playing the Vulcan Starfleet officer Lieutenant Saavik,  In 1985, she played Virgilia Hazard in the ABC miniseries North and South, books I and II.

In 1987 she joined the cast of NBC sitcom Cheers, replacing Shelley Long and remaining with the show until its eleventh and final season.

Alley has won two Emmy Awards. After two nominations for her work on Cheers, in 1988 and 1990, she won for her third, in 1991. She earned her second for the 1994 television film David's Mother.   For her contributions to the film industry, Alley received a motion pictures star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7000 Hollywood Boulevard in 1995.

In 1997, Alley received a further Emmy nomination for her work in the crime drama series The Last Don. In 2005, she played a fictionalized version of herself on Showtime's Fat Actress. She later appeared on Kirstie Alley's Big Life (2010). In 2016, she appeared on the Fox comedy horror series Scream Queens

From 1997 to 2000, Alley played the title character in the NBC sitcom Veronica's Closet, as well as serving as executive producer on the show. She served as the spokesperson for Pier One from 2000 to 2004, and for Jenny Craig from 2005 to 2008.

TV Land aired a sitcom that centered on Alley as a Broadway star and a new parent. It was titled Kirstie, and reunited her with former Cheers co-star Rhea Perlman and Seinfeld star Michael Richards. The series premiered on December 4, 2013, and ran for one season before it was canceled, five months after ending its freshman run.

In February 2011, Alley was announced as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. She was partnered with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Their first dance, a cha-cha-cha, earned them the second-highest score, 23 points of a possible 30. In May, Alley and Chmerkovskiy performed their final dance, also a cha-cha-cha, which earned them a perfect score of 30 out of 30. Alley finished the competition in second place, behind NFL Super Bowl champion Hines Ward. She also took part in the 15th season of Dancing with the Stars for a second chance to win the mirrorball trophy again with Maksim Chmerkovskiy. They were the seventh couple eliminated from the competition.

Virgilia from North and South. It’s been airing on TV these days and I love the costumes. Fanaticism, regardless of the cause is not the way.

North and South (USA) Nailed Strong Female Characters:

Brett Main:

Certified best girl and a total sweetheart, Brett has the innate goodness of a Disney Princess, and the backbone of a queen. While she’s typically very sweet and friendly with everyone, Brett proves fully capable of standing up for and defending herself and those she loves. Her family, her friends, and her home are what matter most to this woman, and good luck trying to mess with any of them while she’s around.

Virgilia Hazard:

A perfect example of self-destructive decision making. While her ideals and the conviction she has for those ideals are admirable, Virgilia’s tendency to dial everything right up to eleven and damn the consequences leads to her throwing herself into some really awful situations over the course of the show. She burns more bridges than she builds, but you still feel sorry for her when she hits a low point.

Constance Flynn:

This woman is a SAINT. Easily the smartest and most level-headed person in any room she walks into, and she’s relentlessly compassionate to everyone. Constance is always the voice of reason when things go to hell, and she’s far more patient with everyone else’s shenanigans than they probably deserve. Her loved ones are lucky to have her, and they know it; she’s a steadfast companion and a devoted friend.

Ashton Main:

A nasty piece of work; scheming, jealous, vindictive, and a chronic liar, Ashton is everything her sister Brett isn’t. She’s used to always getting her way and having the best of everything, and is more than willing to backstab her own family to make sure it stays that way. There’s a small handful of moments where her conniving gets her into real trouble, and you almost feel bad for her, but then she opens her mouth and you’re reminded that she brought it on herself and actually deserves way worse.

Madeline Fabray:

She needs two things: hugs and self-defense training. How Madeline’s gentle nature manages to make it through the hell she endures is a mystery for the ages. Because she knows what it’s like to be helpless, she’ll risk just about anything to help anyone who needs it. Her willingness to lend a hand has been taken advantage of a time or two, and she’s suffered as a result, but that doesn’t stop Madeline from offering anyway.

Each of these ladies is a fully realized character. They’re not just love interests, they have their own ideals and motivations, and they are the ones making decisions about their lives. They work with their male counterparts to get stuff done, and are fully capable of handling things on their own when they need to. They’re wives, sisters, mothers, friends, and people.

I was watching North and South and this bit came up and just hearing ‘blood and fire’ made me think of Game Of Thrones. Not to mention the ‘North and South’ divide, and the freeing of slaves.
