Diverse condizioni di base devono essere soddisfatte affinché possa essere prodotta una mappa del campo visivo di successo, a prescindere dal metodo. Il paziente deve essere in grado di mantenere uno sguardo costante verso una posizione fissa per diversi minuti. Ogni occhio viene testato separatamente mentre l'occhio opposto viene coperto con una benda. La correzione refrattiva deve essere eseguita con una lente di prova. Gli occhiali non devono essere indossati perché possono causare falsi deficit del campo visivo a causa della loro forma. Inoltre, deve essere effettuata una correzione per la presbiopia, per ridurre lo sforzo accomodativo. Gli aggiustamenti standard per la presbiopia variano in base all'età. Per correggere un astigmatismo maggiore di 0,75 diottrie, è necessario utilizzare una lente cilindrica. Se la palpebra o le ciglia ostruiscono l'asse visivo, è possibile fissare la palpebra alla fronte per sollevarla.
