HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Casey Affleck, swamp pop singer Rod Bernard, Sid Bernstein, Joe Besser, Cantinflas, John Cazale, Kid Creole, Del The Funky Homosapien, Cecil B. DeMille, Leslie Duncan, George Hamilton, Roy Hay, Heintje, Mark Knopfler, Greg Langston (The Next, No Alternative), Ron Mael, Tiny McCloud, Pat Metheny, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Alexei Nikolaevich, Peter Ostroushko, Buck Owens, Marjorie Reynolds, Theodore Scaife, Erwin Alexander Schrödinger, Lakeith Stanfield, Matt Thiessen (Reliant K), Stefanos Tsitsipas, Mladen Vukic, Porter Wagoner, Deborah Walley, Wednesday 13, Jane Wyatt, and recording artist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Derrek Van Eaton.
Classic rock-philes and deep Beatles fans will recognize him from the brother band Lon & Derrek Van Eaton. Prior to their association with Apple Records (the record label created by The Beatles), they were part of the eccentric New York-based folk rock band Jacob’s Creek. They shared a studio with Simon & Garfunkel and released one album on Columbia in 1969. Two years later, John Lennon and George Harrison “discovered” them as a brother-act duo and signed them to Apple. The Van Eaton’s music blended urban folk and dreamy rock with a blues-gospel undercurrent, which perfectly coincided with the sounds of Badfinger and latter-day Beatles. The Van Eaton’s excellent BROTHER album was co-produced by George with Klaus Voorman. The Van Eatons toured the USA to promote BROTHER. Their 1972 tour brought them to where I was living in Huntingdon PA, where they played Ellis Hall at Juniata College (I stood listening from outside, a lad with no ticket money).
The BROTHER album launched a long association with George, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, and other travelers in the Apple/Beatle legacy that unfolded in the 1970s. Then the Van Eatons became studio session players favored by producer Richard Perry, who hired them for recordings with Art Garfunkel, Martha Reeves, and Carly Simon. Perry also produced the Van Eaton’s 1975 WHO DO YOU OUT DO album. Following that era, the brothers created a non-profit film and music company called Imagine a Better World.
The Van Eaton brothers since have released sporadic works (duo and solo), notably their acclaimed 1996 cover of “Apple of my Eye” on the COME & GET IT Badfinger tribute album. In 2013 they issued a career-spanning anthology with new recordings with contributions from Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Klaus Voormann, and Gary Wright, and the Van Eatons are still active in musical and spiritual pursuits.
Some years ago I met Derrek some years ago at church we were both attending in Pennsylvania (where I picked his brains about that 1972 concert I heard but couldn’t see), and the last time we crossed paths was at a Monkees concert in Denver in 2011. Even in passive meet-ups I can see the creative spark in Derrek’s eyes. Here’s one of my favorite Van Eaton cuts “Sun Song” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5VSJmb2VI0...Meanwhile, HB DVE and thank you for your years of remarkable creativity and soul.

Finally willing to grind it out in the Challengers to rebuild his ranking on his favorite grass season, former World No. 10 Denis Shapovalov took on seventh seed Aleksandar Vukic for a spot in the second round. Sharpness would also be necessary for one to stand out in this match, which could be tricky but possible, depending on their point construction and pacing.
Even if Shapo had a backhand pass somewhere before A. Vukic held his serves to 1-1, the Canadian started to have a trouble in his second serves as he frequently double-faulted in this game, followed by some erratic showings where the seventh seed turned out to redirect more from his forehand side to secure his break to 2-1. Subsequently, A. Vukic consolidated his lead to 3-1.
Maintaining his point construction as concise as possible, the Australian seventh seed then saw an opportunity to break for the first set thanks to his slight sharpness. After firing a close-call backhand, which turned out to be in, for a crucial equalizer to 5-3* 30-30, he successfully converted his set point made due to Shapo's unforced error with an intuitive volley to break for the first set 6-3, setting himself a set ahead in this match.

✅️ Alexander won his first match at the US Open against Vukic 6-4 6-4 6-4

🥰 I'm very happy to say that Alexander got off to a winning start in his first US Open match in 2 years. He started a little shakily, but it was truly beautiful watching his form blossom throughout the match, producing phenomenal tennis to win in straight sets. ❤️
In the first set, Alexander faced two tense 30-30 opening games, but managed to hold for 2-2. And he followed that up incredibly well, holding firm in the rallies to break Vukic's next game for 3-2, and held for 4-2. Alexander then briefly had a chance to break again, but Vukic relied on his big serve to hold for 4-3. Both players held serve from then on, with Alexander serving out the first set 6-4.
Alexander raised his level superbly in the second set, producing a stunning forehand return winner to obtain an early break for 2-1, and hit some impeccable shots on his next serve to extend his lead to 3-1. Despite playing some beautiful shots to obtain three chances to break for 4-1, Vukic held for 3-2. A moment of tension then came in Alexander's next service game, in which he faced his first break point of the match. But fortunately, he kept his composure and held serve for 4-2, eventually serving out the set 6-4.
And he carried the momentum beautifully into the start of the third set, outclassing his opponent to earn three break points at 1-1, and seized the first one with a gorgeous forehand down the line to lead 2-1, before holding serve for 3-1. Both players then held serve until an unfortunate error on Alexander's serve at 4-3 offered Vukic a break point, causing him to be broken back for 4-4. But Alexander fought back like the champion he is, breaking back instantly for 5-4 and serving out the match to seal the victory 6-4 6-4 6-4.
❤️ That was such an amazing performance from Alexander today to begin his US Open campaign. Alexander now advances to the next round, where he will face Altmaier. I hope he can carry this incredible form into his next match. Let's go, Alexander 🔥

Phoenix Ch QF: Matteo Berrettini [WC] def. Terence Atmane [Q] 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6) Match Stats

📸 Tennis Channel 2
It took a while, once again, for M. Berrettini to find his range from his forehand. Often, this influenced his point construction, but T. Atmane ended up appearing clutch on serve, which was evident in the ninth game of the third set among any other moments in this match. However, M. Berrettini timely fired his forehand winner to secure the key point of the third set tie-breaker, which was closer than how he dominated the second one, which paved the way to his victory. The said forehand influence was also predominantly behind 8 of his break points despite T. Atmane's deep returns converting 2 out of his 7 break points from the first set and the beginning of the second set before M. Berrettini struck back.
On the other hand, it appeared that the difference between both players were thin. M. Berrettini fired 10 aces than T. Atmane's 4, allowing him to have the slight edge from the first serves by 3% with a 76% winning percentage, which helped him nailing some pressure points on his serve. However, even though he double-faulted just twice than T. Atmane's 5, he won 4% lesser points than the Frenchman, which was a consequence of his forehand errors while trying to follow up to T. Atmane's deep returns on his serve, but it was insufficient for T. Atmane to sustain in this match.
Shortly (local time) as this was written, seventh seed Aleksandar Vukic awaits, who earlier defeated Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-4 in an almost simultaneous manner, but way earlier due to Halys' double faults that concluded the set. This turned out to be a rematch of their second-round encounter in the Phoenix Challenger last year, where outside of the possible servefests, M. Berrettini's forehand became the key to mini-break at the second set tie-break to win the match, while he went after A. Vukic's forehand to secure the only break of the match back in the first set. Should be an intriguing one to see how and if the Italian wild card could find his range, sooner or later.

Shapo almost looked more settled in the second set, but he had troubles in closing it out that affected him for the rest of the set. An equalizing backhand winner, which looked almost similar to the point he won earlier in the first set, won him the fourth point of the fifth game before eventually breaking to 3-2, followed by a service game hold to 4-2. A. Vukic then stayed in his range until the moment when Shapo should have served for the second set in the tenth game, where the unseeded Canadian started with a double fault before his forehand side got outhit for the Australian's 2-point lead, eventually getting him broken back to 5-5.
Ultimately, the tie-break became inevitable to determine the rest of the set (or flow). A. Vukic did what he had to do here as Shapo had an erratic start, mostly due to a double fault to start (2-0), followed by a third-shot forehand error (3-0). The seventh seed then continued through a working serve+1 to strengthen his position in the breaker (4-0), but another strings of errors (mostly rushed +1 forehands) only resulted in Shapo facing some match points. Without any further ado, A. Vukic converted it due to Shapo's double-fault, completing the tie-bagel to take the second set 7-6(0), thus securing his spot in the second round.

Topping this week's Challenger finals was the Phoenix Challenger, where defending champion and fifth seed Nuno Borges, who also battled mid-match cramping before defeating Luca van Assche 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, faced a comeback wild card Matteo Berrettini, who yesterday defeated both qualifier Terence Atmane 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6) and seventh seed Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(2), 7-6(2) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Knowing the former's form and the later's comeback-in-style, this was proven to be a decent test for the latter, and it turned out to come down to a few points as it delivered enormous action along the way.
M. Berrettini had a decent start to the match as he fired a successful drop shot to signify the drop-shot festival possibility to equalize the point before breaking early 1-0 2 points after his smash due to N. Borges' 2 forehand errors to close the game. The Italian wild card then continued with a service game hold to 2-0, initially signifying his solid start to the match. However, in the eighth game, N. Borges started to capitalize on M. Berrettini's troubled second serves, returning it properly until he came up with a forehand pass (and the latter was not able to respond even with a simple volley in) to set himself 2 points ahead. The Portuguese fifth seed then created his break point thanks to his backhand return ace before M. Berrettini's third-shot forehand error caused the break-back to 4-4, levelling the play since.
Subsequently, N. Borges' forehand error generated M. Berrettini's break point, which was saved over a working serve before the latter forced another deuce thanks to an anticipative read over the volley earlier. The former then held his serves to 5-4, which was followed by his thunderous forehand winner 3 points later for a chance to break for the first set, to no avail as M. Berrettini still held to 5-5. Fast-forward to the twelfth game, even though N. Borges' return adjustments led to M. Berrettini's forehand error for his initial set points, one of the latter's set point saves came from an electronic line call error, which called a rally-able ball "out" before N. Borges conceded the said point. Ultimately, the defending champion set his hopes for a repeat title alive thanks to his redirection, where M. Berrettini's final shot error there caused him to break for the first set 7-5.

Approximately 2 hours after winning his quarterfinal match against qualifier Terence Atmane 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6), wild card Matteo Berrettini faced an intriguing test in seventh seed Aleksandar Vukic, who earlier defeated Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals earlier that day. An interesting rematch of their second-round encounter in the Phoenix Challenger last year, where M. Berrettini won 7-5, 7-6(5), most of their service game consistency and groundstrokes were indeed tested, added by their point construction under pressure that made one of them stand out in this match.
Right in the third set, M. Berrettini came up with slices that resulted in A. Vukic's shank in response, with the latter's third-shot forehand error causing him to face a break point before he held his serves 2-1 several moments after. Subsequently, the Italian wild card and his passes played a significant role as his forehand pass forced a deuce before A. Vukic held his serves to 3-2, added by a forehand winner to set himself one point ahead in the eighth game as he tried to appear more aggressive, pressing A. Vukic's service game more. However, the Australian's mishit on serve caused a double fault, which generated M. Berrettini's break point before it was converted (4-3) thanks to his backhand slice once again, to which A. Vukic's backhand pass shanked to. The moment did not last long due to M. Berrettini's earlier forehand error to create the latter's break point even if it was saved with an ace, taking into account A. Vukic's backhand lob to break-back 4-4.
One of the pressing moments of this set came in the eleventh game, where A. Vukic had to face 2 break points and endure forever deuce situation. The 2 double faults did not help, but M. Berrettini put enormous pressure on his serves, whose slices forced the second deuce of the game. Other than that, he also produced a forehand winner to force the approximately fifth deuce, followed by an intuitive volley finish two points later. Ultimately, A. Vukic held the said service game to 6-5, and so did M. Berrettini with his backhand down-the-line winner that created his game point, thus bringing the first set to the tie-breaker.
Interestingly, after 4 straight points, M. Berrettini generated his mini-break (3-2) thanks to his defense-to-offense mechanism, with his forehand winner finish concluding the rally before he held his serves to 4-2 to consolidate the play. His moment then continued two points later thanks to his forehand return ace to create his set point to 6-2, which was topped by A. Vukic's forehand mishit finish for M. Berrettini to take the first set 7-6(2); technically, setting himself one set ahead from the finals.

The inaugural main draw doubles action in the Phoenix Challenger involved wild cards Fabio Fognini/Thanasi Kokkinakis, who teamed up over the realization that this tournament has a Wednesday start, and Nuno Borges/Aleksandar Vukic, a pair where both shone during their collegiate career for their own institutions (Mississippi State University & the University of Illinois, respectively), both NCAA All-Americans. Knowing both pairs, with the former having Australian Open Men's Doubles title to their name, this match turned out to deliver the goods as it progressed, bar the pressure points.
Kokkinakis started the match with a backhand down-the-line winner after three games to secure his and Fognini's break point, but N. Borges/A. Vukic still managed to hold his serves to 2-1. It was not until the former pair's return in the fifth game that caused the break of serve, where N. Borges' failed volley to Kokkinakis' preceding forehand secured the said break to 3-2, with a consolidation that followed it to 4-2.
Four straight games later, Kokkinakis/Fognini earned his chance to serve for the set, but N. Borges/A. Vukic tried to improve their return games. Although Kokkinakis came up with a finishing lob to A. Vukic's failed smash moments after Fognini's intuitive volley, N. Borges/A. Vukic still had a break point thanks to A. Vukic's working volley, which was foiled until the deciding point, where Kokkinakis/Fognini regained their serve in time to A. Vukic's return that went too long for the first set 6-4.
