Vukovar water tower (50 meters high), by Petar Kušan and Sergej Kolobov (1963-1968).It used to have a restaurant on the top, until 1991, where it was hit more than 600 times during the Battle of Vukovar. It is now considered a symbol and a memorial and it was renovated after my visit.

Keeping the memory alive, models of the ruined water tower and the tower itself, Vukovar, Croatia - (Održavanje sjećanja živim, makete srušenog vodotornja, Vukovar, Hrvatska), 2024.
During the war from 1991-1995 which resulted in the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Croatia declared its independence even though it had a large Serbian minority. Like many civil wars, it was bloody conflict leading to vast amounts of property damage, displacement of residents, and death. The water tower of the Croatian town was damaged in the war and afterwards became a memorial to the victims of the conflict. That ruined tower is now used as a symbol of the city.
My first visit to the republics of ex-Yugoslavia made me realize how little I know about the region and its complicated history. The Balkans have a long historical memory, and few of the atrocities of the past are forgotten.
