Wizard101 School of Life

And here we are. Onto the spirit schools with the first entry: Life students.

No matter what battle you're in, you SHOULD ALWAYS have a life wizard with you. They're the support, defense, and offense. Of course with them being about preserving life, their novice spells don't do too much damage in the more serious battles but they make up for it with their support spells.

A head canon: Life students aren't exactly dismissive of Death students. If anything, they find them to be quite fun to be around. They assume that Death students view life as precious just like they do, they just have a difficult time of showing it. Of course, they know not to let their guard down around Death students; with one flick of the wand, a Death student can bring a Life student to an early grave. To a student of life, Death students are friends and foes.

I’m not happy with that brown. I find that it kills the life in my painting. Maybe, I would have a single color light source, instead of having the competing white light of the cauldron and blue light of the stone. Since Cornelian (the wizard) has blue magic, I would add more contrast to liven up the shadows using orange. I would also play around with FOCUS. Look at the room you are in. How much of what you see is in focus? A very small sphere you are looking at directly. Everything else is blurry. The farther away from the focus the blurrier it gets. I would keep the wizard’s face, the owl’s face, and the bit of the cauldron to show that there is a tree embossed upon it in focus. Everything else would be blurry. I would also lose the definition between the background, wizard’s robes and the cauldron (lower left side). While painting this, I forgot the cardinal rule: Show your audience what you wish them to see. As an artist you are in control. Where is the STORY point? What is the story point? The wizard performing magic. Raistlin Majere, the dark mage from the Dragonlance Universe by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. This portrait is a detail of a bigger and more detailed illustration actually work in progress. However, the detail about Raistlin's face needed some re-drawing in bigger scale, and so there it is, a pencil 20x30 cm on paper, that later received some digital coloring by PS. This the first time I've posted any writing in a while, and I'm pretty new to the MTG community, so the positive response means a lot to me. It's a work in progress. I've learned to save my base colors and shade the full thing first before moving to individual shading. I'm trying my best to replicate that storm staff that's basically a staff of lightning bolts (can't remember what it was called) but the brush I'm using is a little picky...

Wizard101: School of Fire

I had this ready yesterday but I wasn't satisfied with it. Obviously I changed the pose, took inspiration from the Cape of Fire gear, and tweaked the symbol to give it more perspective (but looking at it now, it just looks swished).

Since fire is typically bad for the skin, I like to think of School of Fire students as having charred finger tips and palms so I gave the character here just that (but it's barely noticeable). It's just a little concept I like to think about in case I do end up making an entire comic series...
