He was sulking in his bedroom when he began to hear it. The opening bars of that song- and- no, he was most definitely not smiling at it.

He was supposed to be sulking. He’d be ditched by her and her annoying friend Choi once again, and, as it was the only leverage he had against her, Si-Hoo was giving Hyun-Sik the silent treatment. She deserved it- she was his twin sister and closest friend, after all. It was like she didn’t even care about him anymore- too preoccupied with Choi and his... Everything, he guessed.

“Stop being so dramatic,” his mother had muttered when he stormed in earlier.

But she didn’t really understand, did she? 

That’s why Si-Hoo continued biting the inside of his cheek to resist a smile ignoring her the best he could, even when Hyun-Sik started knocking on his door to the rhythm of the song.

He couldn’t, however, ignore her when she slammed the door open, shouting “We will find you,” along with the lead singer (even though neither of them really knew what he meant- they didn’t know English, after all).

Setting her boombox onto the floor, Hyun-Sik practically ran over to Si-Hoo with her signature grin, cupping his face in her hands. “Aaacting on your best behavior-” 

Finally, he caved. “Turn your back on mother nature,” he chirped, jumping to his feet- even at fourteen he towered over her- and grabbing her hands to dance with her.

“Everybody wants to rule the world!” The pair shouted in unison, Si-Hoo immediately breaking into loud laughter. Hyun-Sik smiled fondly at him after a moment, spinning him carefully like they’d practiced in their dance classes.

“I’m sorry,” she mumbled after a moment, catching Si-Hoo’s attention. “I haven’t forgotten about you, y’know. He just... Likes hanging out with me without you there.”

“What an asshole. You should stop being so nice to him..”

“I don’t think I can do that.”

And even if her words annoyed him, her smile couldn’t- and he shoved her shoulder in frustration. “I’ll beat him up if he does anything to you.”

“Funny, he said the same thing.”

“What?”

“Kidding!”

Si-Hoo tried not to glare too hard at Choi when he passed Hyun-Sik’s weakly ringing cell phone (a chiptune-sounding version of Everybody Wants To Rule The World, no less) into his hand. They were sixteen now- he was kind of shocked her phone still worked.

“Is that song special to her? She was always humming it.”

“It was-- Well- ...You wouldn’t get it.”

tbt to last summer when i physically couldn't shut up about blink 182 before blink broke up (actually before that again, before things started to go bad) tom and mark (mostly mark) used to talk a lot about like. being the same person in two bodies which is a pretty common way for people to talk about really close fated-to-be soulmate friendships but it's destructive b/c you can't be the same person in two bodies you can't be the same all the way you can't know everything going inside another person and when he starts another band without you when the ways you're different come to the fore after you've spent years thinking your friendship is about how alike you are you don't think "oh right i guess we're kinda different, you go do your thing i'm sure it'll be great because you're my best friend and i believe in you and i don't have to be a part of it" nah you think "oh god don't leave me please don't leave me" and you hold on so tight you drive him away

(and he's explained and explained and it's driving him crazy because you don't understand and you're supposed to just understand he shouldn't even have to explain)

but post-reunion!! they talk all the time about how different they are and how that's okay that's good that's why the band works because that tension can be a positive energy and that's what makes them grow (if not grow up) -- because it takes a bunch of neighbourhoods to make a city, because you can't be one person in two bodies but that doesn't mean broken things can't be fixed
