You're a Joonie girl. Thank you for that last mention by the way. BTS's performance of No More Dream during the MOTS7 ON:E concert, is one of the best examples of why they are at the very top. Watching that performance it's crystal clear that they are the best. I've embbed it here to that point.

Anyway, Joon. Him. Yes, I agree with you. He commands attention. He is so big and he lets you know it. He doesn't hide that energy when he performs, even though he's such a shy bean off-stage. That might be tied to why his voice and sincerity got to you in the last Wlives. Because you knew he was being sincere.

Anyway, I prefer Indigo. It's a more enjoyable listen for me. Paak (the lying whore), brought sass to the record, All Day is SOTY, Change Pt. 2 deserves a Grammy x2, and I think Namjoon deserves cred for designing an album with that caliber of collaborators whose style complement his, people who trust him to make good music and agreed to join the project on merit of his talent. Mono is a reset. It's an experience everyone should have at least once. Also, not sure I've said this anywhere, but I have a pet theory that Namjoon's voice on Mono is what made Soyoon reach out to work with him. Smoke Sprite sounds like the best possible mutation of Mono. Soyoon felt it instantly. That lesbian didn't stand a chance. That's what his voice and mind does.

Anyway I'm starting to sound insane so I'll just stop here. This is why I can't write about my biases lol.

There was an adorable little girl, probably 8 or 9, in a Raven cosplay, set up selling prints of her art alongside her parents and it was the cutest shit ever. $1 each or 3 for $2 😭♥️

WV Pop Con might be small but oh my G O D it's got one of the best atmospheres and some of the best folks ever.

David Clifton Harding

CLARKSBURG — David Clifton Harding, 78, of Bridgeport, WV, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019, at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport. He was born in Maryland on June 21, 1940, a son of the late William Thomas and Exie May Harding. David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra Jean (Harbert) Harding. In addition to his wife, David is survived by one son, David E. Harding and wife Tina of Bridgeport; a very special grandson, that he was the proud “Pop-pop” of, Luke Harding of Bridgeport; one brother, Benjamin Harding of Lake Worth, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews. I have read from the Exponent telegram that David Clifton Harding passed away. David is from Bridgeport WV, he passed away at the age of 78 years old last May 06, 2019 at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport. David is survived by his wife, brother, son, grandson, nephews, and nieces. One thing I know is that there is sunshine at the end of every sorrow. Whenever somebody passed away, I can feel the pain that the family is experiencing, but the family needs to be very strong. They need to trust and believe that whatever is happening around them, it is part of the grand plan.

You can really have time to meditate, talk to Him and ask for HIS guidance. I like preaching, information is all facts. This is the best place for people who are thirsty of the word of God. This is the place where you can get to see people who worship the Lord. It is a lovely church with a great environment. I recommend this church for people who want to find peace.

“Non so dove andrò, quel che vedrò, chi incontrerò, cerco solo di rimanere aperto, come un bambino”: dialogo con William T. Vollmann

William T. Vollmann è un genio, chi non lo sa, ho cominciato a leggerlo vent’anni fa, era il 1999 e Fanucci pubblicava le sue “Butterfly Stories”. Quest’anno WV compie 60 anni, a luglio, e la sua statura epica, come si sa, al netto dei saggi romanzeschi e meravigliosi (“Come un’onda che sale e che scende” e “Zona proibita” sono editi da Mondadori), è sigillata nel ciclo “Seven Dreams”, destinato a raccontare l’epopea – di stelle e macerie – americana. Il ciclo è costituito da sette libri, scritti non consecutivamente. In Italia ne esistono tre. “Venga il tuo regno” fu pubblicato nel 2011 da Alet, “I fucili” è stato stampato da minimum fax lo scorso anno, “La camicia di ghiaccio”, già Alet 2007, è riproposto, ora, da minimum fax. Questo ultimo – che mescola scrittura mitica a pop, le cronache dei re al punk, la solarità epica all’underground – è il primo della serie, pubblicato in origine nel 1990, racconta l’approdo di Erik il Rosso in Groenlandia, nel Nuovo Mondo. Felici che l’opera di Vollmann trovi audace collocazione anche in Italia, festeggiamo proponendo una sua intrigante intervista.

La costruzione dello studio di William T. Vollman, scrive l’intervistatrice Hannah Jakobsen, indica il tipo di allestimento richiesto per produrre un’opera come la sua. Lo studio è stato ricavato da un vecchio ristorante messicano: locale ombroso, postindustriale, che comprende una camera da letto e una cucina ben tenuta dove Vollmann serve alla giornalista della birra e del whisky – entrambi in tazzone. Questo ambiente mostra anche un amore dello scrittore per le arti visive, fatto sorprendente: dipinti e fotografie, cose sue per la maggior parte, si allineano lungo le pareti; il resto è una raccolta di ritratti femminili in stile espressionista, che Vollmann chiama “le dee”. Questa congerie yankee e messicana fa venire in mente il funambolo Pynchon nascosto in Messico a mangiare tacos nel tentativo di comprendere un solo racconto di Cortazar, traducendolo: anche questo è postmoderno. A proposito di traduzione: è notevole che il Los Angeles Review of Books per il quale scrive la nostra giornalista ed educatrice sia tollerante più di alcuni italici insaponati: la giornalista scrive infatti “razza e sesso”, invece che “etnia e genere”, senza temere che le siano tirate le orecchie vicino alla lavagna. Hai avuto molte esperienze insolite: abbracciato le armi coi mujaheddin in Afghanistan, poi corrispondente di guerra, e hai rubato passaggi a scrocco su treni merce, giusto per dare un’idea al lettore. Come hai scelto di fare queste cose, come hanno fatto nascere la tua scrittura?

Per almeno due ragioni, direi. Uno: uscire e provare qualcosa che ti incuriosisce per tenere aperta la mente e poi decidere cosa fare di quel che hai vissuto, che è quello che Thoreau raccomandava di fare sempre e comunque. Lui diceva che non dobbiamo consentire alla nostra conoscenza di mettersi a posto, questo per lui è ignoranza. Finché ci ricordiamo di essere ignoranti possiamo capire quel che sta là fuori. Quando ho preso i treni che dicevi prima, ho tenuto in mente queste cose. Non so dove andrò, quel che vedrò, chi incontrerò, e cerco solo di rimanere aperto – come un bambino. Così ho effettivamente modo di imparare dalla realtà, da quello che lei è. L’altro modo è questo: ho una situazione in mente di cui voglio scrivere e voglio renderla vivida al massimo e così voglio uscire e raccogliere informazioni, il colore locale, un’esperienza d’insieme della cosa che scriverò. Per dire: conosci la mia serie “Seven dreams”?

Sì. 

Lì c’è I fucili. Nell’Ottocento tutti in Europa cercavano il passaggio a nordovest come in una gara. Oggi non abbiamo questo assillo ma all’epoca nessuno sapeva come arrivare in Asia dall’Europa: diciamo grazie al riscaldamento globale, mentre loro andavano lassù al Polo e stavano a pensare a come navigarlo. Così Sir John Franklin si mise all’opera con tre tentativi ed ebbe sempre difficoltà. Io volevo entrare nella sua testa e vedere che significa essere solo lassù nell’Artico, mi sono fatto portare in aereo al Polo Nord magnetico: anch’io da solo, roba davvero ruvida, peggio di quanto pensassi, però micidiale per il mio libro. Ti ho risposto?

Nel libro Espulso dall’Eden, era il 2004, parlavi dell’empatia che viene fatta grande dalla scrittura. Per esempio quel che dici sugli schiavi del mercato sessuale. Mi domando se volevi provare più empatia per loro, per quell’insieme di persone diversissime. 

Effettivamente presi a interessarmi di prostitute, ero un cliente. La mia fidanzata mi aveva scaricato e provavo come un disperato a rimorchiarne un’altra e alla fine ho chiamato una squillo, fisicamente non è stato nulla di forte – però riuscì a farmi sentire uomo, ancora, un uomo che può stare al fianco di una donna. Così mi sono chiesto: questa esperienza tutto sommato a cosa assomiglia, che vuol dire, è giusta? falsa? queste donne che vedevo ora erano sfruttate? o avevano del potere su di me nella situazione nella quale ero entrato? Così via, molte storie e disegni e fotografie di prostitute, quanto tempo mi ha preso tutto questo per raggiungere una conclusione: lo stesso di prima, i passaggi a bordo di treni merci. Prima cliente poi amico e poi ascoltatore. Provavo a comprendere e poi fui in grado di dire: bene, le cose per me stanno così.

Mi spiazzi un pochino perché poi tutto il resto della tua scrittura si sente che è connesso coi grossi argomenti della nostra epoca, politica, società: e penso a come ritrai i poveri rimasti senza casa in Poor people, ai migranti per lavoro in Imperial e poi di nuovo la tua esplorazione dell’ambiente circostante alle mercenarie sessuali. Notevole sentire che per te parte tutto dalla curiosità. 

Ma la realtà è sempre rilevante! Immagina di uscire e cercare di capire qualcosa del posto e delle sue persone, cose che ignori, e magari devi scriverne con onestà e meraviglia: poi passano 500 anni, magari ci sono ancora persone sulla faccia della terra e desiderano leggere quel che tu avevi da dire, e questo li tocca in un modo o nell’altro. Qual è il fatto più triste della tua vita?

Non lo so, non ne sono sicura. Quando ho grattato il fondo non è stato per qualcosa che è toccato a me e basta. E tu? 

Se la metti così c’è stata la morte di mia sorella, annegò che ero bambino, nove anni e lei sei, dovevo controllarla e non fui all’altezza, una cosa durissima anche per i miei genitori, vorrei non fosse mai successo. D’altro canto, da quando è accaduto, ho lasciato che l’episodio mi desse un contorno, del tipo sì, giusto, da bimbo ho fatto un casino, e allora come posso rimanere senza empatia? E allora qui in questa stanza al posto mio può esserci anche uno stupratore o un terrorista o magari anche altri e penso, okay, questo è mio fratello, questa è mia sorella, abbiamo fatto tutti un gran casino. Queste persone che sono in camera, questo stupratore e questo terrorista, non devono piacermi a forza, magari è giusto metterle a morte. Eppure: devo sentire e ricordare che siamo fratelli e sorelle.

Però non ti sembra che la storia di tua sorella sia altra cosa dallo stupro, dall’attentato? Questi sono mossi da cattiveria. 

Qui sei su una pendenza e scivoli. La gente ha sempre i suoi motivi, che mi dici se avessimo qui un matto? Certo non rende il tutto più giusto, ma devi sentire anche questi altri. O magari tutti i nostri soldati? E ora ogni nordamericano dice “viva i nostri soldati, ci proteggono”. Da quando è cominciata la guerra del Terrore col 2001, abbiamo ammazzato un paio di centinaia di migliaia di persone? per salvare che cosa? Abbiamo avuto i nostri morti l’11 settembre, e altri dopo quel giorno. Ma possiamo dire che la situazione sia giusta? sia sbagliata? 

Notevole questo relativizzare che fai, è lo stesso dei tuoi libri, penso a Europe Central, a come umanizzi tutto. Mai pensato di scrivere su Trump? 

Beh, se non altro se domani ti svegli e sei al posto di Trump puoi dire “Ci sono molte cose che non farò”. Ma se ti svegliassi con la sua vita e tutto il condizionamento di cui Trump soffre? In realtà so poco su di lui, lo trovo un tipo squallido, mi domando se commetta tutto il male che può compiere, dovrei pensarci su, provare a cavarne qualcosa. Sarebbe curioso immaginarlo come un cucciolo di bambino e poi qualcosa che va storto: in che modo? da dove arriva questa sua identità? questi sono i ferri del mestiere se sei scrittore.

Insomma, al mio orecchio suona come se ci fossero le circostanze prima delle persone, lì a determinarle. 

Ora immagina di svegliarti domani nel corpo di un ragazzo tedesco, 18 anni e sei nel 1939, tutto quel che hai imparato a scuola è roba da Gioventù hitleriana e poi improvvisamente scoppia la guerra e la radio dice “Oh, Inglesi Polacchi Ebrei, ci hanno attaccato”. Che farai? è colpa tua? Non sai un grammo in più di quello che ti ho detto ora. Allora. Come diamine è possibile biasimarti? Così impari di che colore è la tua uniforme, lo sai, e ripensi ai piatti che ti piacevano – questo aiuta. Altrettanto vero che alcune persone determinano le proprie circostanze.

Ci sono persone che partono da situazioni simili e alla svolta si diversificano. Prendi la gente bigotta, loro sono plasmati dalle circostanze. 

E allora? Forse fino a un certo punto siamo tutti haters su internet, siamo razzisti misogini, questo lo sai vero? Viviamo abbastanza e le cose brutte succedono e dobbiamo ricordarci che persone maliziose ci feriscono e si rappresentano per se stesse, voglio dire che non importa se la malizia sia maschile o femminile, non me ne importa nemmeno del genere del gruppo razziale o chissà che altro. Pochissime persone sanno fare lo sforzo di creare questo scenario mentale. Soprattutto in questo sistema educativo di merda e questo altro sistema cosiddetto di news, anche questo mi fa andare al cesso, qui ogni veleno è intensificato, è una pozione potentissima – sempre più simile ai nazi. In ogni caso la penso così. Perciò, nel nostro piccolo dobbiamo stare in piedi e sapere che questi sistemi non producono del bene, eppure questo non ci discolpa. Siamo responsabili, che ne pensi?

Difficile dire. Come molti altri, anch’io applico standard diversi quando penso a quel che dice certa gente, ad esempio i più anziani, e non sono sicura di quel che provo. 

Buona! Pensa che una volta ero seduto su un bus Greyhound, di fianco a questo vecchio panettiere, un tipo alla mano, un viaggio in comune di cinque o sei ore e giungemmo a Manzanar [370 km a NE di Los Angeles, campo di prigionia per Giapponesi] e lui sbotta “se solo l’avessero usato anche per gli Ebrei, il campo”. Mi ha stordito, mi sono alzato e ho cambiato posto e non gli ho più parlato. Ora penso: era sbagliato? Forse quel che avrei dovuto fare, probabilmente ora farei così, è dire “Ma davvero, perché lo pensi? vorrei capire perché lo pensi”.

Hai anche scritto, in quel libro del 2004, che come Nordamericani dobbiamo capire la responsabilità della guerra in Vietnam. E come scrittore, come persona, tu porti responsabilità che sono basate su altri fattori come razza e sesso? 

Conosci il detto “a chi è dato molto, molto sarà chiesto”? La responsabilità è tua, a fin di bene. Non sono in credito con nessuno per questo talento di scrittura. Ho lavorato pesantemente ma ho amato farlo perciò non è nemmeno un lavoro, non sono in credito con nessuno neanche per il fatto che i miei genitori potessero darmi dei soldi per viaggiare – e così, sì, possiamo dire che sono un privilegiato e anche tu lo sei visto che mi intervisti – e se ci prendiamo cura dei nostri fratelli e delle sorelle questo ci rende almeno felici. Se domani un tipo entra nella zona dove parcheggio e so già che domani devo andare a raccogliere la sua cacca, uscirò comunque per parlarci e questo mi rende felice perché sto sconfiggendo l’ordinanza statale contro il campeggio che mi impedisce di dargli un posto dove bivaccare per un paio di notti. Se non esistesse questa ordinanza, se ci fosse altro che dovrei fare, lo farei. Non che lo volessi fare quando ho comprato casa, ma dal momento che abito qui non posso fare lo struzzo, è una cosa che sono chiamato a fare. Il tipo sarà fatto sloggiare ma almeno ho provato a fare una cosa buona e se ci fosse poi qualcun altro, magari una donna povera che si mette a dormire qui davanti casa e la lascio in pace, quanto credito credi che io possa accumulare? Non posso, ho soltanto questo spazio qui davanti. Però so che mi vergognerei se dicessi “smamma, non ti permetterò di coricarti su questo mio spazio privato freddo e umido”.

Hai paragonato la prostituzione a molti lavori diversi, perciò vedi una relazione anche con la scrittura? 

Chiaro, siamo tutti mercenari e prostitute.

Dear Friends, I'm back! I'm sorry for such an extended social media hiatus, but it was for a good reason! My husband and I welcomed a baby girl into the world on May 18, and we have been focusing all of our energies on her. Parenting is hard, and it has honestly taken so much more energy than I expected. <3 Don't worry though, B&G orders have still been shipping out! I just took a break from all of the "extra" activities. Consider it my maternity leave. :) At any rate, I am ready to get back into the flow of things here as much as possible. I'll be setting up at WV Pop Con in Morgantown, WV next weekend (Aug 25-26). If you are in the area, come and check it out! Baby tax photo included.
