80 years after WWII, we honor Timofey Prokofiev—an incredible Roma hero. A sailor turned soldier, he died in 1944 during the Olshansky Landing after resisting 18 Nazi attacks. He’s the only openly Roma Hero of the Soviet Union.

Today's #matriarchymarch is the amazing Hannah Szenes. Hannah was a special ops executive and paratrooper of Mandate Palestine for the British Army during WWII. The group was comprised of Jewish volunteers whose mission was to organize resistance against the German forces, and to aid in the rescue of allied personnel. Hannah was a Hungarian who immigrated to Nahalal and joined a paramilitary group that would later lay the foundation for the Israeli Defense Forces. In 1943 she enlisted in the British Army's Women's Auxiliary Air Force and began her training in Egypt. A year later she and her colleagues parachuted into Yugoslavia to join a partisan group (communist led resistance), to aid in the rescue of Hungarian Jews being deported to Auschwitz. However it was discovered that the Germans now occupied Hungary, and it was deemed too dangerous to continue with the rescue. Despite this, Hannah and her colleagues decided to continue on alone. They were arrested at the Hungarian border, and her British transmitter was discovered. She was taken to a prison, stripped and beaten for three days, loosing several teeth in the process. Her captors wanted the codes for the transmitter in order to find out who these three prisoners were and how they could find and trap others like them. Hannah was resolute, and so was sent to a prison in Budapest where she would continue to be interrogated and beaten for information. She only revealed her name. In October of 1944 she was charged and convicted of treason, and on November 7th she was executed by firing squad. In 1946 her diary was published in Hebrew. In 1950 her remains were brought to Israel and burried in Jerusalem. After the Cold War she was officially exonerated by the Hungarian military court. Hannah is considered to be a national heroine in Israel. #matriarch #matriarchy #herstory #history #shero #heroine #mightygirl #womenempoweringwomen #femalewarrior #servicebeforeself #jewishheroine #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #solider #airman #wwiihero #portrait #womenpaintingwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/Buzu1KVlxeE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ugohg0ekjl3l

🇺🇲Remembering the Men of Easy Company: First Lieutenant Harry Welsh ♠️
Harry Francis Welsh of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was 22 years old when he registered for service on October 16, 1940.
Initially, Harry was assigned to Fort Benning with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. While an enlisted man. His commanding officers saw his potential and recommended him for Officer Candidate School.
Welsh was transferred to the 101st Airborne, and was assigned to Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and quickly became friends with 1st Lieutenant Richard Winters.
Harry Welsh jumped into Normandy on D-Day and did not find Easy until the next morning, shortly before the company was given the task of taking Carentan. When he joined the rest of his company, he was placed in charge of 1st platoon after Richard Winters took charge of the company.
On June 12, 1944, he led his platoon on a direct assault into Carentan. He was pinned down until the rest of Easy Company moved into the town, and after taking the town, the Company moved against a German counterattack south of Omaha Beach. His platoon held the line with Easy Company; during the Battle of Bloody Gulch, Welsh ran into an open field with an enlisted gunner, John McGrath, and knocked out a German armored vehicle, with a bazooka. Elements of the 2nd Armored Division arrived in force and drove off the remaining Germans.
After holding the line for another month, Welsh and the rest of Easy Company were relieved and shipped to England for refitting and replacements. He became Executive Officer of Easy Company.
On September 1944, Welsh dropped into the Netherlands for Operation Market Garden and remained there for the duration of the operation.
On December 16, 1944, German armored divisions broke through the American lines in the Ardennes Forest. At this point, Welsh had been reassigned to HQ Company of 2nd Battalion. His Division was then assigned to the defense of the town of Bastogne. During a battle on Christmas Day, Welsh was severely wounded. Harry was awarded two Bronze Stars for valor during his combat action and two purple hearts for injury during combat. 1st Lt Harry Welsh returned to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and married Catherine Grogan on December 29, 1945. Kitty used Harry's reserved parachute as the fabric for her gown.
Harry retired from the Wilkes-Barre Area School District in 1983. He served both as a teacher and a Director of Pupils. Welsh died of heart failure on January 21, 1995, on his good friend Richard Winters' 77th birthday. Harry was 76 years old. Lest We Forget.
Welsh was portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers by Rick Warden. Pictured below are Winters and Welsh.
♠️We are happy to announce a new live and interactive Band of Brothers cast Zoom event for Band of Brothers fans by the Band of Brothers. Today, on May 9 – Victory Day – we remember a forgotten giant of history.
Alexander Ivanovich Baurov was not only a hero of the Soviet Union, he was a hero of the Roma people — in Russia, in Europe, and around the world.
Born into a Roma family in Saint Petersburg, Baurov defied every expectation the world placed on him. He was a musician. An engineer. A warrior. When the Nazis invaded, Baurov didn’t wait to be called — he volunteered for the front. He served as head of service in the 44th Armored Battalion and was wounded near Krasnoye Selo. He returned to the fight. He rose to command his own division. And he won.
He was decorated with the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Battle Red Banner, and the Order of Alexander Nevsky — among the highest Soviet military honors. Poland awarded him the Cross of Valor. But his fight didn’t end in 1945.
After the war, Alexander Baurov helped design and launch the Soviet Union’s first space rockets — including Sputnik 1, the first satellite in human history.
While much of the world erased the Roma from their history books, Baurov reached the stars.
He is our pride. He is our resistance. He is our hero.
Let the world know his name.
